Polarization modes of gravitational waves in general modified gravity: General metric theory and general scalar-tensor theory

In this paper, we establish a unified parameterized framework for analyzing the polarization modes of gravitational waves in the general metric theory (gravity is only described by the metric) and the general scalar-tensor theory (gravity is described by the metric and an additional scalar field). Specifically, we study the polarization modes of gravitational waves in the most general metric theory and general scalar-tensor theory that satisfy the following conditions: (1) Spacetime is four-dimensional; (2) The theory satisfies the principle of least action; (3) The theory is generally covariant; (4) The action describing a free particle is $\int ds$. We find that the polarization modes of gravitational waves in the theory satisfying the above conditions depends on the selection of parameters in the framework, and the theory allows for up to all six polarization modes. Once we have established our framework, the analysis of the polarization modes of gravitational waves in specific theories will depend on determining the corresponding parameters within our framework. In our analysis, we also find that the polarization modes of gravitational waves in the general metric theory and the general scalar-tensor theory that satisfy the conditions also have some interesting universal properties.

Kink solutions in generalized 2D dilaton gravity

We study static kink solutions in a generalized two-dimensional dilaton gravity model, where the kinetic term of the dilaton is generalized to be an arbitrary function of the canonical one $\mathcal X= -\frac12 (\nabla φ)^2$, say $\mathcal F(\mathcal X)$, and the kink is generated by a canonical scalar matter field $ϕ$. It is found that for arbitrary $\mathcal F(\mathcal X)$, the background field equations have a simple first-order formalism, and the linear perturbation equation can always be written as a Schrödinger-like equation with factorizable Hamiltonian operator. After choosing appropriate $\mathcal F(\mathcal X)$ and superpotential, we obtain a sine-Gordon type kink solution with pure AdS$_2$ metric. The linear perturbation issue of this solution becomes an exactly solvable conformal quantum mechanics problem, if one of the model parameter takes a critical value.

First law of black hole thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for Kerr-Newman Taub-NUT black holes

Stimulated by the recent researches of black hole thermodynamics for black hole with Newman-Unti-Tamburino (NUT) parameter, we investigate the thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture for a Kerr-Newman Taub-NUT black hole. By defining the electric charge as a Komar integral over the event horizon, we construct a consistent first law of black hole thermodynamics for a Kerr-Newman Taub-NUT black hole through Euclidean action. Having the first law of black hole thermodynamics, we investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for the black hole with a charged test particle and a complex scalar field. We find that an extremal black hole cannot be destroyed by a charged test particle and a complex scalar field. For a near-extremal black hole with small NUT parameter, it can be destroyed by a charged test particle but cannot be destroyed by a complex scalar field.

Extended black hole thermodynamics from extended Iyer-Wald formalism

In recent years, there has been significant interest in the field of extended black hole thermodynamics, where the cosmological constant and/or other coupling parameters are treated as thermodynamic variables. Drawing inspiration from the Iyer-Wald formalism, which reveals the intrinsic and universal structure of conventional black hole thermodynamics, we illustrate that a proper extension of this formalism also unveils the underlying theoretical structure of extended black hole thermodynamics. As a remarkable consequence, for any gravitational theory described by a diffeomorphism invariant action, it is always possible to construct a consistent extended thermodynamics using this extended formalism.

Static spheres around spherically symmetric black hole spacetime

Unique features of particle orbits produce novel signatures of gravitational observable phenomena, and are quite useful in testing compact astrophysical objects in general relativity or modified theories of gravity. Here we observe a representative example that a static, spherically symmetric black hole solution with nonlinear electrodynamics admits static points at finite radial distance. Each static point thus produces a static sphere, on which a massive test particle can remain at rest at arbitrary latitudes with respect to an asymptotic static observer. As a result, the well-known static Dyson spheres can be implemented by such orbits. More interestingly, employing a topological argument, we disclose that stable and unstable static spheres (if they exist) always come in pairs in an asymptotically flat spacetime. In contrast to this, the counterpart naked singularity has one more stable static sphere than the unstable one. Our results have potential applications in testing black holes in standard Maxwell and nonlinear electrodynamics, as well as in uncovering the underlying astronomical observation effects in other gravitational theories beyond general relativity.

White dwarf binary modulation can help stochastic gravitational wave background search

For the stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds (SGWBs) search centred at the milli-Hz band, the galactic foreground produced by white dwarf binaries (WDBs) within the Milky Way contaminates the extra-galactic signal severely. Because of the anisotropic distribution pattern of the WDBs and the motion of the spaceborne gravitational wave interferometer constellation, the time-domain data stream will show an annual modulation. This property is fundamentally different from those of the SGWBs. In this Letter, we propose a new filtering method for the data vector based on the annual modulation phenomenon. We apply the resulted inverse variance filter to the LISA data challenge. The result shows that for the weaker SGWB signal, such as energy density $Ω_{\rm astro}=1\times10^{-12}$, the filtering method can enhance the posterior distribution peak prominently. For the stronger signal, such as $Ω_{\rm astro}=3\times10^{-12}$, the method can improve the Bayesian evidence from `substantial' to `strong' against null hypotheses. This method is model-independent and self-contained. It does not ask for other types of information besides the gravitational wave data.

Axial gravitational quasinormal modes of a self-dual black hole in loop quantum gravity

We study the axial gravitational quasinormal modes of a self-dual black hole in loop quantum gravity. Considering the axial perturbation of the background spacetime, we obtain the Schrödinger-like master equation. Then we calculate the quasinormal frequencies with the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation and the asymptotic iteration method. We also investigate the numerical evolution of an initial wave packet on the self-dual black hole spacetime. We find the quantum correction parameter $P$ positively affects the absolute values of both the real and imaginary parts of quasinormal frequencies. We derive the relation between the parameters of the circular null geodesics and quasinormal frequencies in the eikonal limit for the self-dual black hole, and numerically verify this relation.

Spinor Walls in Five-Dimensional Warped Spacetime

We study domain wall solutions of a real spinor field coupling with gravitation in five dimensions. We find that the nonlinear spinor field supports a class of soliton configurations which could be viewed as a wall embedded in five dimensions. We begin with an illuminating solution of the spinor field in the absence of gravitation. In a further investigation, we exhibit three sets of solutions of the spinor field with nonconstant curvature bulk spacetimes and three sets of solutions corresponding to three constant curvature bulk spacetimes. We demonstrate that some of these solutions in specific conditions have the energy density distributions of domain walls for the spinor field, where the scalar curvature is regular everywhere. Therefore, the configurations of these walls can be interpreted as spinor walls which are interesting spinor field realizations of domain walls. In order to investigate the stability of these spinor configurations, the linear perturbations are considered. The localization of the zero mode of tensor perturbation is also discussed.

Topology of equatorial timelike circular orbits around stationary black holes

A topological approach has been successfully used to study the properties of the light ring and the null circular orbit, in a generic black hole background. However, for the equatorial timelike circular orbit, quite different from the light ring case, its radius is closely dependent of the energy and angular momentum of a test particle. This fact seems to restrict the extension of the topological treatment to the timelike circular orbit. In this paper, we confirm that the angular momentum does not affect the asymptotic behavior of the constructed vector with its zero points denoting the equatorial timelike circular orbits. As a result, a well-behaved topology to characterize the equatorial timelike circular orbits can be constructed. Our study shows that the total topological number of the timelike circular orbits vanishes for a generic black hole, which is dependent of the energy of the particle. Significantly, it reveals that if there the timelike circular orbits exist, they always come in pairs for fixed angular momentum. Meanwhile, the stable and unstable timelike circular orbits have positive or negative winding number. Of particular interest is that the marginally stable circular orbit corresponds to the bifurcation point of the zero point of the constructed vector. Moreover, we also examine the case when the particle energy acts as the control parameter. It is shown that there will be topological phase transition when the value of the particle energy is one. Below this value, the timelike circular orbits always come in pairs for fixed energy. Otherwise, we will have one more unstable timelike circular orbit. We further apply the treatment to the Kerr black hole. All the results given in a generic black hole background are exactly reproduced. These strongly indicate that our topological approach can be generalized to the equatorial timelike circular orbits.

Effective action of a self-interacting scalar field on brane

In extra dimensional theories, the four-dimensional field theory is reduced from a fundamental field theory in the bulk spacetime by integrating the extra dimensional part. In this paper we investigate the effective action of a self-interacting scalar field on a brane in the five-dimensional thick braneworld scenario. We consider two typical thick brane solutions and obtain the Pöschl-Teller and harmonic potentials of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes, respectively. The analytical mass spectra and wave functions along extra dimension of the KK modes are obtained. Further, the effective coupling constant between different KK particles, cross section, and decay rate for some processes of the KK particles are related to the fundamental coupling in five dimensions and the new physics energy scale. Some interesting properties of these interactions are found with these calculations. The KK particles with higher mode have longer lifetime, and they almost do not interact with ordinary matter on the brane if their mode numbers are large enough. Thus, these KK particles with higher modes might be a candidate of dark matter.

Shortcut in codimension-2 brane cosmology in light of GW170817

In this paper, our universe is regarded as a codimension-2 brane embedded in a noncompact six-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. We derive the gravitational horizon radius on the brane under the low-energy approximation, which reflects how the extra dimensions cause the shortcut effect of gravitational waves (GWs). We also study the time delay between a GW signal and an electromagnetic (EM) wave signal in the low-redshift limit by combining with the joint observations of GW170817/GRB 170817A, which gives an upper limit to the $\text{AdS}_{6}^{~}$ radius as $\ell^{2}_{~} \lesssim 3.84\,\text{Mpc}^{2}_{~}$. For a high-redshift source, the time delay is converted into the discrepancy between the source redshift derived from the GW signal and the one derived from the EM counterpart. It is found that if one expects to detect the EM counterpart of a high-redshift GW event within a reasonable observation time, it requires a stronger constraint on the $\text{AdS}_{6}^{~}$ radius. Our research shows that the $\text{AdS}_{6}^{~}$ radius should satisfy $\ell^{2}_{~}\lesssim0.02\,\text{Mpc}^{2}_{~}$ for the DECIGO and BBO.

Constraining Palatini-Horndeski theory with gravitational waves after GW170817

In this paper, we investigate the possible parameter space of Palatini-Horndeski theory with gravitational waves in a spatially flat Universe. We find that if the theory satisfies the following condition: in any spatially flat cosmological background, the tensor gravitational wave speed is the speed of light $c$, then only $S = \int d^4x \sqrt{-g} \big[K(ϕ,X)-G_{3}(ϕ,X){\tilde{\Box}}ϕ+G_{4}(ϕ)\tilde{R}\big]$ is left as the possible action in Palatini-Horndeski theory.

Evolution of scalar field resonances in a braneworld

In this work, we investigate numerical evolution of massive Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of a scalar field in a thick brane. We derive the Klein-Gordon equation in five dimensional spacetime, and obtain the evolution equation and the Schrödinger-like equation. With the resonances of the scalar KK modes as the initial data, the scalar field is evolved with the maximally dissipative boundary condition. The results show that there are scalar KK resonant particles with long life on the brane, which indicates that these resonances might be viewed as one of the candidates for dark matter.

Chaos and multifold complexity for an inverted harmonic oscillator

We examine the multifold complexity and Loschmidt echo for an inverted harmonic oscillator. We give analytic expressions for any number of precursors, implementing multiple backward and forward time evolutions of the quantum state, at the leading order in the perturbation. We prove that complexity is dominated by the longest permutation of the given time combination in an alternating ``zig-zag'' order, the exact same result obtained with holography. We conjecture that the general structure for multifold complexity should hold true universally for generic quantum systems, in the limit of a large number of precursors.

Black Hole Solutions as Topological Thermodynamic Defects

In this work, employing the generalized off-shell free energy, we treat black hole solutions as defects in the thermodynamic parameter space. The results show that the positive and negative winding numbers corresponding to the defects indicate the local thermodynamical stable and unstable black hole solutions, respectively. The topological number $W$ defined as the sum of the winding numbers for all the black hole branches at an arbitrary given temperature is found to be a universal number independent of the black hole parameters. Moreover, this topological number only depends on the thermodynamic asymptotic behaviors of the black hole temperature at small and large black hole limits. Different black hole systems are characterized by three classes via this topological number. This number could help us well understanding the black hole thermodynamics, and further shed new light on the fundamental nature of quantum gravity.

Gravitational recoil from binary black hole mergers in scalar field clouds

In vacuum, the gravitational recoil of the final black hole from the merger of two black holes depends exclusively on the mass ratio and spins of the coalescing black holes, and on the eccentricity of the binary. If matter is present, accretion by the merging black holes may modify significantly their masses and spins, altering both the dynamics of the binary and the gravitational recoil of the remnant black hole. This paper considers such scenario. We investigate the effects on the kick of the final black hole from immersing the binary in a scalar field cloud. We consider two types of configurations: one with non-spinning and unequal-mass black holes, and a second with equal mass and spinning holes. For both types, we investigate how the gravitational recoil of the final black hole changes as we vary the energy density of the scalar field. We find that the accretion of scalar field by the merging black holes could have a profound effect. For the non-spinning, unequal-mass binary black holes, the kicks are in general larger than in the vacuum case, with speeds of approximately 1,200 km/s for binaries with mass ratio 2:1, one order of magnitude larger than in vacuum. For equal mass, binaries with black holes with spins aligned with the orbital angular momentum, kicks larger than in vacuum are also found. For systems with spins in the super-kick configuration, the scalar field triggers a similar dependence of the kicks with the entrance angle at merger as in the vacuum case but in this case depending on the strength of the scalar field.

Equatorial orbits of spinning test particle in rotating boson star

In this paper, we study the circular orbit of the spinning test particle in the background of a rotating boson star. Using the pole-dipole approximation and neglecting the back-reaction of the spinning test particle on the spacetime, the equation of motion of the spinning test particle is described by the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equation. We solve this equation under the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition and obtain the four-momentum and four-velocity of the spinning test particle. Quite different from the spinless particle, the effective potential of the spinning particle with zero orbital angular momentum goes to infinite at the center of the rotating boson star. This will lead to the fact that the spinning particle can not pass through the center of the boson star. However, when the spin angular momentum and orbital angular momentum satisfy $2\bar{s}+\bar{l}=0$, the effective potential is not divergent anymore and the spinning particle can pass through the center of the rotating boson star. {We still investigate how the spin affects the structure of the circular orbits and we find that the spin will induce the larger or smaller regions of no circular orbits, unstable circular orbits, and stable circular orbits.} Moreover, the radius and energy of the circular orbit will be decreased or increased by the particle spin. These results will have an important application in testing the gravitational waves in the boson star background.

Dynamics of scalar hair with self-interactions around a Schwarzchild black hole

In this paper, we study the dynamics of scalar hair around a Schwarzchild black hole. The scalar hair is sourced by the Gauss-Bonnet invariant with a linear coupling. We work perturbatively in the coupling constant and ignore the back-reaction of the scalar hair and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. We evolve the scalar field in the background of a Schwarzchild black hole and study the dynamical formation of scalar hair with different self-interactions. We integrate the energy and compute the energy flux of the scalar hair in terms of the canonical energy-momentum tensor and give the corresponding dependence on the self-interactions. Our results allow us to estimate the radiation and the condensation of scalar field with different self-interactions, these would improve our understanding for the dynamical scalarization of black holes and the possible configuration of the scalar hair in scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity.
