High-Resolution Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory Compact Least-Squares Schemes with Implicit Time Integration for Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations on Curvilinear Grids

This paper presents a family of high-resolution weighted essentially non-oscillatory compact least-squares schemes with implicit time integration for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on curvilinear grids. Compared with the original compact least-squares schemes, the proposed method introduces two main improvements. First, instead of enforcing the accuracy constraints over the entire computational domain, including discontinuous regions, it constructs the reconstruction matrix only along smooth reconstruction lines using an accuracy-preserving weighting strategy. This treatment effectively suppresses the persistent high-frequency oscillations observed in the original compact least-squares schemes and yields sharper profiles near discontinuities. Second, the method simplifies the shock-capturing procedure and improves efficiency by using a single set of polynomials, whereas the original compact least-squares schemes require both unlimited and limited polynomials. Combined with spectral optimization, the proposed method exhibits more favorable spectral properties than conventional weighted essentially non-oscillatory schemes. The smoothness indicators and penalty matrices are constructed through an efficient iterative procedure with modest additional cost. Numerical results for inviscid and viscous one-, two-, and three-dimensional flows demonstrate that the proposed method provides robust shock-capturing capability while maintaining high resolution in smooth regions and across contact discontinuities.

A general positivity-preserving algorithm for implicit high-order finite volume schemes solving the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations

This paper presents a general positivity-preserving algorithm for implicit high-order finite volume schemes solving Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. Previous positivity-preserving algorithms are mainly based on mathematical analyses, being highly dependent on the existence of low-order positivity-preserving numerical schemes for specific governing equations. This dependency poses serious restrictions on extending these algorithms to temporally implicit schemes, since it is difficult to know if a low-order implicit scheme is positivity-preserving. The present positivity-preserving algorithm is based on an asymptotic analysis of the solutions near local vacuum minimum points. The asymptotic analysis shows that the solutions decay exponentially with time to maintain non-negative density and pressure at a local vacuum minimum point. In its neighborhood, the exponential evolution leads to a modification of the linear evolution process, which can be modelled by a direct correction of the linear residual to ensure positivity. This correction however destroys the conservation of the numerical scheme. Therefore, a second correction procedure is proposed to recover conservation. The proposed positivity-preserving algorithm is considerably less restrictive than existing algorithms. It does not rely on the existence of low-order positivity-preserving baseline schemes and the convex decomposition of volume integrals of flow quantities. It does not need to reduce the time step size for maintaining the stability either. Furthermore, it can be implemented iteratively in the implicit dual time-stepping schemes to preserve positivity of the intermediate and converged states of the sub-iterations. It is proved that the present positivity-preserving algorithm is accuracy-preserving. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm preserves the positive density and pressure in all test cases.

Instability and Mixing of Gas Interfaces Driven by Cylindrically Converging Shock Wave

In the present paper, an efficient method to generate "pure" cylindrically converging shock wave without a following contact surface is proposed firstly. Then, the Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities of two interfaces driven by the generated cylindrically converging shock wave and the associated fluids' mixing behaviors are numerically studied. The results show that the instability of the interface is characterized by the growth of perturbation amplitude before re-shock. However, the mixing of fluids is enhanced dramatically after re-shock, which is manifested not only by the evolutions of flow structures but also by the temporal behaviors of mixing parameters. Further investigation shows that, although these two cases are of different initial perturbations, their evolutions of mixing width and other mixing parameters such as molecular mixing fraction, local anisotropy and density-specific volume correlation could achieve the same laws of temporal behavior, especially during the later stage after re-shock. These results to some extent demonstrate that there also exist scaling law and temporal asymptotic behaviors in the mixing zone for cylindrically converging shock wave driven interface. Moreover, the analyses of turbulent kinetic energy spectrums in the azimuthal direction at late stage also witness the $k^{-5/3}$ decaying law of turbulent kinetic energy for the present inhomogeneity flows driven by cylindrically converging shock wave, which further manifests that the fluids' mixing is indeed enhanced at later time after re-shock.
