Long-lived Andreev states as evidence for protected hinge modes in a bismuth nanoring Josephson junction

Second-order topological insulators are characterized by helical, non-spin-degenerate, one-dimensional states running along opposite crystal hinges, with no backscattering. Injecting superconducting pairs therefore entails splitting Cooper pairs into two families of helical Andreev states of opposite helicity, one at each hinge. Here we provide evidence for such separation via the measurement and analysis of switching supercurrent statistics of a crystalline nanoring of bismuth. Using a phenomenological model of two helical Andreev hinge modes, we find that pairs relax at a rate comparable to individual quasiparticles, in contrast with the much faster pair relaxation of non-topological systems. This constitutes a unique tell-tale sign of the spatial separation of topological helical hinges.

Ballistic edge states in Bismuth nanowires revealed by SQUID interferometry

Spin-orbit interactions are known to have drastic effects on the band structure of heavy-element-based materials. Celebrated examples are the recently identified 3D and 2D topological insulators. In those systems transport takes place at surfaces or along edges, and spin-momentum locking provides protection against (non-magnetic) impurity scattering, favoring spin-polarized ballistic transport. We have used the measurement of the current phase relation of a micrometer-long single crystal bismuth nanowire connected to superconducting electrodes, to demonstrate that transport occurs ballistically along two edges of this high-spin-orbit material. In addition, we show that a magnetic field can induce to 0-pi transitions and phi0-junction behavior, thanks to the extraordinarily high g-factor and spin orbit coupling in this system, providing a way to manipulate the phase of the supercurrent-carrying edge states.

Proximity Effect in a Superconductor-Metallofullerene-Superconductor Molecular Junction

We report low-temperature transport measurements through molecules of Gd metallofullerenes between superconducting suspended electrodes. The presence and number of molecules in the 2 nm-wide gap between electrodes was determined by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. We find that a junction containing a single metallofullerene dimer between superconducting electrodes displays signs of proximity-induced superconductivity. In contrast, no proximity effects develops in junctions containing larger cluster of metallofulerenes. These results can be understood by taking into account multiple Andreev reflections, and the spin states of the Gd atoms.
