Characterization of the large-size NDL EQR20 silicon photomultipliers

Unlike most commercially available silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), EQR20 SiPMs produced by the Novel Device Laboratory (NDL) avoid using individual resistors to quench the avalanche multiplication of the microcells. Instead, bulk resistance of the epitaxial silicon layer is used, and the signal is directly collected at a common anode plane. This allows for the fabrication of SiPMs as large as 6.24 x 6.24 mm^2 while keeping the recovery time below τ = 25 ns. These devices can be composed of microcells with 20 micrometer pitch while reaching PDE above 50% and 10^6 gain at 5 V overvoltage. On the other hand, a crosstalk level from 20% to 40% is observed for overvoltages from 3 V to 5 V. Moreover, significant pulse shape distortion is observed for pulses above ~100 pC, corresponding to microcell occupancy of a few percent. This work provides an independent determination of the performance parameters of the EQR20 11-6060D-S SiPMs. Influence of the pulse shape distortion is discussed from the perspective of the applicability of these devices to the scintillator-based forward hadron calorimeter (FoCal-H) of the ALICE apparatus at CERN.

Characteristic properties of Planacon MCP-PMTs

A systematic investigation of Planacon MCP-PMTs was performed using 64 XP85002/FIT-Q photosensors. These devices are equipped with microchannel plates of reduced resistance. Results of a study of their gain stability over time and saturation level in terms of the average anode current are presented. This information allows one to determine the lower limit of the MCP resistance for stable Planacon operation. The spread of the electron multiplication characteristics for the entire production batch is also presented, indicating the remarkably low voltage requirements of these MCP-PMTs. Detection efficiency and noise characteristics, such as dark count rate and afterpulsing level, are also reviewed.

First ground-level laboratory test of the two-phase xenon emission detector RED-100

RED-100 is a two-phase detector for study of coherent elastic scattering of reactor electron antineutrinos off xenon atomic nuclei. The detector contains a total of 200 kg of liquid xenon in a titanium cryostat with 160 kg of xenon in active volume inside a Teflon-made light collection cage associated with electrode system. The active volume is viewed by two arrays of nineteen 3"-diameter Hamamatsu R11410-20 PMTs assembled in two planes on top and bottom. The electrode system is equipped with an electron shutter (a patented device) to reduce a "spontaneous" single-electron noise. The detector was tested in a ground-level laboratory. The obtained results demonstrate that detection of coherent elastic scattering of reactor antineutrinos off xenon nuclei at Kalinin nuclear power plant with the RED-100 detector is feasible with a threshold of 4 ionization electrons.

Anode current saturation of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs

We have measured and compared the characteristics of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs (XP85112/A1-Q-L) with their non-ALD counterparts (XP85012/A1-Q). While the later show excellent performance, the ALD-coated sensors have surprisingly low current saturation levels (~two orders of magnitude lower than expected) and extremely high gain recovery time (more than 7 orders of magnitude higher than expected). We suspect that these problems might be caused by the unexpected side-effects of the ALD process. To make a definite conclusion, more samples need to be tested, preferably from different production runs. If our observation were confirmed, it would mean a serious technological setback for ALD-coated MCP-PMTs.

Observation of light emission from Hamamatsu R11410-20 photomultiplier tubes

We have shown that high voltage biased Hamamatsu R11410-20 photomultipliers with a dark count rate above 10 kHz emit single photons. The effect has been observed in a few units at room temperature and temperatures reduced down to -60 degrees Celsius. The effect should be taken into account in experiments aimed on search for rare events with small energy depositions in massive liquid xenon detectors.

Experimental study of ionization yield of liquid xenon for electron recoils in the energy range 2.8 - 80 keV

We present the results of the first experimental study of ionization yield of electron recoils with energies below 100 keV produced in liquid xenon by the isotopes: 37Ar, 83mKr, 241Am, 129Xe, 131Xe. It is confirmed by a direct measurement with 37Ar isotope (2.82 keV) that the ionization yield is growing up with the energy decrease in the energy range below ~ 10 keV accordingly to the NEST predictions. Decay time of scintillation at 2.82 keV is measured to be 25 +/- 3 ns at the electric field of 3.75 kV/cm.
