Optical theorem for Aharonov-Bohm scattering

Quantum-mechanical scattering off a magnetic vortex is considered, and the optical theorem is derived. The vortex core is assumed to be impermeable to scattered particles, and its transverse size is taken into account. We show that the scattering Aharonov-Bohm effect is independent of the choice of boundary conditions from the variety of the Robin ones. The behaviour of the scattering amplitude in the forward direction is analyzed, and the persistence of the Fraunhofer diffraction in the short-wavelength limit is shown to be crucial for maintaining the optical theorem in the quasiclassical limit.

Diffraction and quasiclassical limit of the Aharonov--Bohm effect

Since the Aharonov-Bohm effect is the purely quantum effect that has no analogues in classical physics, its persistence in the quasiclassical limit seems to be hardly possible. Nevertheless, we show that the scattering Aharonov-Bohm effect does persist in the quasiclassical limit owing to the diffraction, i.e. the Fraunhofer diffraction in the case when space outside the enclosed magnetic flux is Euclidean, and the Fresnel diffraction in the case when the outer space is conical. Hence, the enclosed magnetic flux can serve as a gate for the propagation of short-wavelength, almost classical, particles. In the case of conical space, this quasiclassical effect which is in principle detectable depends on the particle spin.

The Aharonov-Bohm effect in conical space

Conical space emerges inevitably as an outer space of any topological defect of the vortex type. Quantum-mechanical scattering of a nonrelativistic particle by a vortex centred in conical space is considered, and effects of the transverse size of the vortex are taken into account. Paradoxical peculiarities of scattering in the short-wavelength limit are discussed.

Polarization of the vacuum of a quantized scalar field by an impenetrable magnetic vortex of finite thickness

We consider the effect of the magnetic field background in the form of a tube of the finite transverse size on the vacuum of the quantized charged massive scalar field which is subject to the Dirichlet boundary condition at the tube. It is shown that, if the Compton wavelength associated with the scalar field exceeds considerably the transverse size of the tube, then the vacuum energy which is finite and periodic in the value of the magnetic flux enclosed in the tube is induced on a plane transverse to the tube. Some consequences for generic features of the vacuum polarization in the cosmic-string background are discussed.

Induced vacuum current and magnetic field in the background of a cosmic string

Vacuum polarization effects in the cosmic string background are considered. We find that a current is induced in the vacuum of the quantized massive scalar field and that the current circulates around the string which is generalized to a $(d-2)$-brane in locally flat $(d+1)$-dimensional space-time. As a consequence of the Maxwell equation, a magnetic field strength is also induced in the vacuum and is directed along the cosmic string. The dependence of the current and the field strength on the string flux and tension is comprehensively analyzed. Both the current and the field strength are holomorphic functions of the space dimension, decreasing exponentially with the distance from the string. In the case of $d=3$ we show that, due to the vacuum polarization, the cosmic string is enclosed in a tube of the magnetic flux lines if the mass of the quantized field is less than the inverse of the transverse size of the string core.

Vacuum polarization in graphene with a topological defect

The influence of a topological defect in graphene on the ground state of electronic quasiparticle excitations is studied in the framework of the long-wavelength continuum model originating in the tight-binding approximation for the nearest neighbour interaction in the graphitic lattice. A topological defect that rolls up a graphitic sheet into a nanocone is represented by a pointlike pseudomagnetic vortex with a flux which is related to the deficit angle of the cone. The method of self-adjoint extensions is employed to define the set of physically acceptable boundary conditions at the apex of the nanocone. The electronic system on a graphitic nanocone is found to acquire the ground state condensate and current of special type, and we determine the dependence of these quantities on the deficit angle of the nanocone, continuous parameter of the boundary condition at the apex, and the distance from the apex.

On the possible induced charge on a graphitic nanocone at finite temperature

Electronic excitations in a graphitic monolayer (graphene) in the long-wavelength approximation are characterized by the linear dispersion law, representing a unique example of the really two-dimensional "ultrarelativistic" fermionic system which in the presence of topological defects possesses rather unusual properties. A disclination that rolls up a graphitic sheet into a nanocone is described by a pointlike pseudomagnetic vortex at the apex of the cone, and the flux of the vortex is related to the deficit angle of the conical surface. A general theory of planar relativistic fermionic systems in the singular vortex background is employed, and we derive the analytical expression for the charge which is induced at finite temperature on some graphitic nanocones.

Electronic properties of graphene with a topological defect

Various types of topological defects in graphene are considered in the framework of the continuum model for long-wavelength electronic excitations, which is based on the Dirac--Weyl equation. The condition for the electronic wave function is specified, and we show that a topological defect can be presented as a pseudomagnetic vortex at the apex of a graphitic nanocone; the flux of the vortex is related to the deficit angle of the cone. The cases of all possible types of pentagonal defects, as well as several types of heptagonal defects (with the numbers of heptagons up to three, and six), are analyzed. The density of states and the ground state charge are determined.

Induced quantum numbers of a magnetic monopole at finite temperature

A Dirac electron field is quantized in the background of a Dirac magnetic monopole, and the phenomenon of induced quantum numbers in this system is analyzed. We show that, in addition to electric charge, also squares of orbital angular momentum, spin, and total angular momentum are induced. The functional dependence of these quantities on the temperature and the CP-violating vacuum angle is determined. Thermal quadratic fluctuations of charge and squared total angular momentum, as well as the correlation between them and their correlations with squared orbital angular momentum and squared spin, are examined. We find the conditions when charge and squared total angular momentum at zero temperature are sharp quantum observables rather than mere quantum averages.

Fractionalization of angular momentum at finite temperature around a magnetic vortex

Ambiguities in the definition of angular momentum of a quantum-mechanical particle in the presence of a magnetic vortex are reviewed. We show that the long-standing problem of the adequate definition is resolved in the framework of the second-quantized theory at nonzero temperature. Planar relativistic Fermi gas in the background of a point-like magnetic vortex with arbitrary flux is considered, and we find thermal averages, quadratic fluctuations, and correlations of all observables, including angular momentum, in this system. The kinetic definition of angular momentum is picked out unambiguously by the requirement of plausible behaviour for the angular momentum fluctuation and its correlation with fermion number.

On effects of non-Euclidean geometry in quantum theory

Theory of scattering of a quantum-mechanical particle on a cosmic string is developed. S-matrix and scattering amplitude are determined as functions of the flux and the tension of the string. We reveal that, in the case of the nonvanishing tension, the high-frequency limit of the differential scattering cross section does not coincide with the differential cross section for scattering of a classical pointlike particle on a string.

On the effective lagrangian in spinor electrodynamics with added violation of Lorentz and CPT symmetries

We consider quantum electrodynamics with additional coupling of spinor fields to the space-time independent axial vector violating both Lorentz and CPT symmetries. The Fock-Schwinger proper time method is used to calculate the one-loop effective action up to the second order in the axial vector and to all orders in the space-time independent electromagnetic field strength. We find that the Chern-Simons term is not radiatively induced and that the effective action is CPT invariant in the given approximation.

One-Loop Effective Action for the Extended Spinor Electrodynamics with Violation of Lorentz and CPT Symmetry

If violation of Lorentz and CPT symmetry is introduced into the fermion sector of conventional quantum electrodynamics, then the Chern-Simons term is radiatively induced with finite nonzero coefficient, as well as the Maxwell term is with logarithmically divergent one. The heat kernel expansion and the proper time methods are used to determine the effective action in the one-loop approximation unambiguously.

Self-adjointness of the two-dimensional massless Dirac Hamiltonian and vacuum energy density in the background of a singular magnetic vortex

A massless spinor field is quantized in the background of a singular static magnetic vortex in 2+1-dimensional space-time. The method of self-adjoint extensions is employed to define the most general set of physically acceptable boundary conditions at the location of the vortex. Under these conditions, the vacuum energy density and effective potential in the vortex background are determined.
