Drag effect and Cooper electron-hole pair fluctuations in a topological insulator film

Manifestations of fluctuating Cooper pairs formed by electrons and holes populating opposite surfaces of a topological insulator film in the Coulomb drag effect are considered. Fluctuational Aslamazov-Larkin contribution to the transresistance between surfaces of the film is calculated. The contribution is the most singular one in the vicinity of critical temperature $T_\mathrm{d}$ and diverges in the critical manner as $(T-T_\mathrm{d})^{-1}$. In the realistic conditions $γ\sim T_\mathrm{d}$, where $γ$ is average scattering rate of electrons and holes, Aslamazov-Larkin contribution plays important role and can dominate the fluctuation transport. The macroscopic theory based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation is developed for description of the fluctuational drag effect in the system. The results can be easily generalized for other realizations of electron-hole bilayer.

Resonant manifestations of chiral excitons in magnetooptical Faraday and Kerr effects in topological insulator film

Manifestation of chiral excitons on surfaces of topological insulator thin film with magnetically induced energy gap in the surface spectrum in magnetooptical Kerr and Faraday effects is analyzes. Excitonic contribution to a surface optical conductivity tensor is calculated. Chiral excitons contrary to conventional ones resonantly contribute to Hall conductivity due to lack of the symmetry between the states with opposite angular momentum. They can lead to considerable enhancement of Faraday angle and ellipticity of transmitted electromagnetic wave. Chiral excitons cause decrease of Kerr angle and prominent signatures in ellipticity of reflected electromagnetic wave. Conditions for experimental observation of described effects are discussed.

Ultrahigh refractive index sensitivity of TE-polarized electromagnetic waves in graphene at the interface between two dielectric media

The behavior of the TE and TM electromagnetic waves in graphene at the interface between two semi-infinite dielectric media is studied. The dramatic influence on the TE waves propagation even at very small changes in the optical contrast between the two dielectric media is predicted. Frequencies of the TE waves are found to lie only in the window determined by the contrast. We consider this effect in connection with the design of graphene-based optical gas sensor. Near the frequency, where the imaginary part of the conductivity of graphene becomes zero, ultrahigh refractive index sensitivity and very low detection limit are revealed. The considered graphene-based optical gas sensor outperforms characteristics of modern volume refractive index sensors by several orders of magnitude.

Electron-hole pairing in topological insulator thin film

We consider pairing of massless Dirac electrons and holes located on opposite surfaces of thin film of "strong" three-dimensional topological insulator. Such pairing was predicted to give rise to topological exciton condensate with unusual properties. We estimate quantitatively achievable critical temperature of the pairing with taking into account self-consistent screening of the Coulomb interaction, disorder and hybridization of electron and hole states caused by a tunneling through the film. Increase of the gap above the hybridization value when the temperature is lowered can be observable signature of the pairing. System parameters required to observe the electron-hole pairing are discussed.

Turbulence in a Bose-Einstein Condensate of Dipolar Excitons in Coupled Quantum Wells

The nonlinear dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dipolar excitons trapped in an external confining potential in coupled quantum wells is analysed. It is demonstrated that under typical experimental conditions the dipolar excitons BEC can be described by a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation with the local interaction between the excitons, which depends on the exciton distribution function. It is shown that, if the system is pumped at sufficiently high frequencies, a steady turbulent state can be formed.

Cooper pairing of electrons and holes in graphene bilayer: Correlation effects

Cooper pairing of spatially separated electrons and holes in graphene bilayer is studied beyond the mean-field approximation. Suppression of the screening at large distances, caused by appearance of the gap, is considered self-consistently. A mutual positive feedback between appearance of the gap and enlargement of the interaction leads to a sharp transition to correlated state with greatly increased gap above some critical value of the coupling strength. At coupling strength below the critical, this correlation effect increases the gap approximately by a factor of two. The maximal coupling strength achievable in experiments is close to the critical value. This indicated importance of correlation effects in closely-spaced graphene bilayers at weak substrate dielectric screening. Another effect beyond mean-field approximation considered is an influence of vertex corrections on the pairing, which is shown to be very weak.

Influence of Landau level mixing on the properties of elementary excitations in graphene in strong magnetic field

Massless Dirac electrons in graphene fill Landau levels with energies scaled as square roots of their numbers. Coulomb interaction between electrons leads to mixing of different Landau levels. The relative strength of this interaction depends only on dielectric susceptibility of surrounding medium and can be large in suspended graphene. We consider influence of Landau level mixing on the properties of magnetoexcitons and magnetoplasmons - elementary electron-hole excitations in graphene in quantizing magnetic field. We show that, at small enough background dielectric screening, the mixing leads to very essential change of magnetoexciton and magnetoplasmon dispersion laws in comparison with the lowest Landau level approximation.

Phase diagram of Rydberg atoms with repulsive van der Waals interaction

We report a quantum Monte Carlo calculation of the phase diagram of bosons interacting with a repulsive inverse sixth power pair potential, a model for assemblies of Rydberg atoms in the local van der Waals blockade regime. The model can be parametrized in terms of just two parameters, the reduced density and temperature. Solidification happens to the fcc phase. At zero temperature the transition density is found with the diffusion Monte Carlo method at density $ρ= 3.9 (\hbar^2/m C_6)^{3/4} $, where $C_6$ is the strength of the interaction. The solidification curve at non-zero temperature is studied with the path integral Monte Carlo approach and is compared with transitions in corresponding harmonic and classical crystals. Relaxation mechanisms are considered in relation to present experiments, especially pertaining to hopping of the Rydberg excitation.

Collective excitations on a surface of topological insulator

We study collective excitations in a helical electron liquid on a surface of three-dimensional topological insulator. Electron in helical liquid obeys Dirac-like equation for massless particless and direction of its spin is strictly determined by its momentum. Due to this spin-momentum locking, collective excitations in the system manifest themselves as coupled charge- and spin-density waves. We develop quantum field-theoretical description of spin-plasmons in helical liquid and study their properties and internal structure. Value of spin polarization arising in the system with excited spin-plasmons is calculated. We also consider the scattering of spin-plasmons on magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities and external potentials, and show that the scattering occurs mainly into two side lobes. Analogies with Dirac electron gas in graphene are discussed.

Spin-plasmons in topological insulator

Collective plasmon excitations in a helical electron liquid on the surface of strong three-dimensional topological insulator are considered. The properties and internal structure of these excitations are studied. Due to spin-momentum locking in helical liquid on a surface of topological insulator, the collective excitations should manifest themselves as coupled charge- and spin-density waves.

Mesoscopic supersolid of dipoles in a trap

A mesoscopic system of indirect dipolar bosons trapped by a harmonic potential is considered. The system has a number of physical realizations including dipole excitons, atoms with large dipolar moment, polar molecules, Rydberg atoms in inhomogenious electric field. We carry out a diffusion Monte Carlo simulation to define the quantum properties of a two-dimensional system of trapped dipoles at zero temperature. In dimensionless units the system is described by two control parameters, namely the number of particles and the strength of the interparticle interaction. We have shown that when the interparticle interaction is strong enough a mesoscopic crystal is formed. As the strength of interactions is decreased a multi-stage melting takes place. Off-diagonal order in the system is tested using natural orbitals analysis. We have found that the system might be Bose-condensed even in the case of strong interparticle interactions. There is a set of parameters for which a spatially ordered structure is formed while simultaneously the fraction of Bose condensed particles is non zero. This might be considered as a realization of a mesoscopic supersolid.

Phonon-mediated electron pairing in graphene

The possibility of superconducting pairing of electrons in doped graphene due to in-plane and out-of-plane phonons is studied. Quadratic coupling of electrons with out-of-plane phonons is considered in details, taking into account both deformation potential and bond-stretch contributions. The order parameter of electron-electron pairing can have different structures due to four-component spinor character of electrons wave function. We consider s-wave pairing, diagonal on conduction and valence bands, but having arbitrary structure with respect to valley degree of freedom. The sign and magnitude of contribution of each phonon mode to effective electron-electron interaction turns out to depend on both the symmetry of phonon mode and the structure of the order parameter. Unconventional orbital-spin symmetry of the order parameter is found.

Electron-electron and electron-hole pairing in graphene structures

The superconducting pairing of electrons in doped graphene due to in-plane and out-of-plane phonons is considered. It is shown that the structure of the order parameter in the valley space substantially affects conditions of the pairing. Electron-hole pairing in graphene bilayer in the strong coupling regime is also considered. Taking into account retardation of the screened Coulomb pairing potential shows a significant competition between the electron-hole direct attraction and their repulsion due to virtual plasmons and single-particle excitations.

Nanotube-Based NEMS: Control vs. Thermodynamic Fluctuations

Multi-scale simulations of nanotube-based nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) controlled by a nonuniform electric field are performed by an example of a gigahertz oscillator. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we obtain the friction coefficients and characteristics of the thermal noise associated with the relative motion of the nanotube walls. These results are used in a phenomenological one-dimensional oscillator model. The analysis based both on this model and the Fokker-Planck equation for the oscillation energy distribution function shows how thermodynamic fluctuations restrict the possibility of controlling NEMS operation for systems of small sizes. The parameters of the force for which control of the oscillator operation is possible are determined.

Magnetically operated nanorelay based on two single-walled carbon nanotubes filled with endofullerenes Fe@C20

Structural and energy characteristics of the smallest magnetic endofullerene Fe@C20 have been calculated using the density functional theory approach. The ground state of Fe@C20 is found to be a septet state, and the magnetic moment of Fe@C20 is estimated to be 8 Bohr magnetons. Characteristics of an (8,8) carbon nanotube with a single Fe@C20 inside are studied in the framework of the semiempirical approach. The scheme of a magnetic nanorelay based on cantilevered nanotubes filled with magnetic endofullerenes is elaborated. The proposed nanorelay is turned on as a result of bending of nanotubes by a magnetic force. Operational characteristics of such a nanorelay based on (8,8) and (21,21) nanotubes fully filled with Fe@C20 are estimated and compared to the ones of a nanorelay made of a (21,21) nanotube fully filled with experimentally observed (Ho3N)@C80 with the magnetic moment of 21 Bohr magnetons. Room temperature operation of (21,21) nanotube based nanorelays is shown.

Interwall conductance in double-walled armchair carbon nanotubes

The dependence of the interwall conductance on distance between walls and relative positions of walls are calculated at the low voltage by Bardeen method for (n,n)@(2n,2n) double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with n = 5, 6, ..., 10. The calculations show that interwall conductance does not depend on temperature (for T < 500 K) and current-voltage characteristic is linear. The conductance decreases by 6 orders of magnitude when the interwall distance is doubled. Thus, depending on the interwall distance, DWCNTs can be used as temperature stable nanoresistors or nanocapacitors.

Uniaxially deformed (5,5) carbon nanotube: Structural transitions

The Kekule structure of the ground state of (5,5) armchair carbon nanotube is revealed by semiempirical molecular orbital calculations. This structure has bonds with two different bond lengths, differing by 0.003 nm. The ground state has tripled (compared to undistorted case) translational period due to Peierls distortions. Two first order structural phase transitions controlled by the tension are predicted at zero temperature. These transitions correspond to 5% and 13% elongations of a uniaxially deformed (5,5) nanotube. The narrow gap semiconductor to metal transition is predicted at 5% elongation of the nanotube.

Quasiequilibrium supersolid phase of a two-dimensional dipolar crystal

We have studied the possible existence of a supersolid phase of a two-dimensional dipolar crystal using quantum Monte Carlo methods at zero temperature. Our results show that the commensurate solid is not a supersolid in the thermodynamic limit. The presence of vacancies or interstitials turns the solid into a supersolid phase even when a tiny fraction of them are present in a macroscopic system. The effective interaction between vacancies is repulsive making a quasiequilibrium dipolar supersolid possible.
