The evolution of positively curved invariant Riemannian metrics on the Wallach spaces under the Ricci flow

This paper is devoted to the study of the evolution of positively curved metrics on the Wallach spaces $SU(3)/T_{\max}$, $Sp(3)/Sp(1)\times Sp(1)\times Sp(1)$, and $F_4/Spin(8)$. We prove that for all Wallach spaces, the normalized Ricci flow evolves all generic invariant Riemannian metrics with positive sectional curvature into metrics with mixed sectional curvature. Moreover, we prove that for the spaces $Sp(3)/Sp(1)\times Sp(1)\times Sp(1)$ and $F_4/Spin(8)$, the normalized Ricci flow evolves all generic invariant Riemannian metrics with positive Ricci curvature into metrics with mixed Ricci curvature. We also get similar results for some more general homogeneous spaces.

The infimum of the volumes of convex polytopes of any given facet areas is 0

We prove the theorem mentioned in the title, for ${\mathbb{R}}^n$, where $n \ge 3$. The case of the simplex was known previously. Also, the case $n=2$ was settled, but there the infimum was some well-defined function of the side lengths. We also consider the cases of spherical and hyperbolic $n$-spaces. There we give some necessary conditions for the existence of a convex polytope with given facet areas, and some partial results about sufficient conditions for the existence of (convex) tetrahedra.

Solvable Lie groups of negative Ricci curvature

We consider the question of whether a given solvable Lie group admits a left-invariant metric of strictly negative Ricci curvature. We give necessary and sufficient conditions of the existence of such a metric for the Lie groups the nilradical of whose Lie algebra is either abelian or Heisenberg or standard filiform, and discuss some open questions.

Negative eigenvalues of the Ricci operator of solvable metric Lie algebras

In this paper we get a necessary and sufficient condition for the Ricci operator of a solvable metric Lie algebra to have at least two negative eigenvalues. In particular, this condition implies that the Ricci operator of every non-unimodular solvable metric Lie algebra or every non-abelian nilpotent metric Lie algebra has this property.

The Ricci flow on generalized Wallach spaces

We consider the asymptotic behavior of the normalized Ricci flow on generalized Wallach spaces that could be considered as special planar dynamical systems. All non symmetric generalized Wallach spaces can be naturally parametrized by three positive numbers $a_1, a_2, a_3$. Our interest is to determine the type of singularity of all singular points of the normalized Ricci flow on all such spaces. Our main result gives a qualitative answer for almost all points $(a_1,a_2,a_3)$ in the cube $(0,1/2]\times (0,1/2]\times (0,1/2]$.

Generalized normal homogeneous Riemannian metrics on spheres and projective spaces

In this paper we develop new methods of study of generalized normal homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we obtain a complete classification of generalized normal homogeneous Riemannian metrics on spheres. We prove that for any connected (almost effective) transitive on $S^n$ compact Lie group $G$, the family of $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics on $S^n$ contains generalized normal homogeneous but not normal homogeneous metrics if and only if this family depends on more than one parameters. Any such family (that exists only for $n=2k+1$) contains a metric $g_{\can}$ of constant sectional curvature 1 on $S^n$. We also prove that $(S^{2k+1}, g_{\can})$ is Clifford-Wolf homogeneous, and therefore generalized normal homogeneous, with respect to $G$ (excepting the groups $G=SU(k+1)$ with odd $k+1$). The space of unit Killing vector fields on $(S^{2k+1}, g_{\can})$ from Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of Lie group $G$ is described as some symmetric space (excepting the case $G=U(k+1)$ when one obtains the union of all complex Grassmannians in $\mathbb{C}^{k+1}$).

Asymptotic behavior of support points for planar curves

In this paper we prove a universal inequality describing the asymptotic behavior of support points for planar continuous curves. As corollaries we get an analogous result for tangent points of differentiable planar curves and some (partially known) assertions on the asymptotic of the mean value points for various classical analytic theorems. Some open questions are formulated.

Geodesic orbit manifolds and Killing fields of constant length

The goal of this paper is to clarify connections between Killing fields of constant length on a Rimannian geodesic orbit manifold $(M,g)$ and the structure of its full isometry group. The Lie algebra of the full isometry group of $(M,g)$ is identified with the Lie algebra of Killing fields $\mathfrak{g}$ on $(M,g)$. We prove the following result: If $\mathfrak{a}$ is an abelian ideal of $\mathfrak{g}$, then every Killing field $X\in \mathfrak{a}$ has constant length. On the ground of this assertion we give a new proof of one result of C. Gordon: Every Riemannian geodesic orbit manifold of nonpositive Ricci curvature is a symmetric space.

Compact Riemannian Manifolds with Homogeneous Geodesics

A homogeneous Riemannian space $(M= G/H,g)$ is called a geodesic orbit space (shortly, GO-space) if any geodesic is an orbit of one-parameter subgroup of the isometry group $G$. We study the structure of compact GO-spaces and give some sufficient conditions for existence and non-existence of an invariant metric $g$ with homogeneous geodesics on a homogeneous space of a compact Lie group $G$. We give a classification of compact simply connected GO-spaces $(M = G/H,g)$ of positive Euler characteristic. If the group $G$ is simple and the metric $g$ does not come from a bi-invariant metric of $G$, then $M$ is one of the flag manifolds $M_1=SO(2n+1)/U(n)$ or $M_2= Sp(n)/U(1)\cdot Sp(n-1)$ and $g$ is any invariant metric on $M$ which depends on two real parameters. In both cases, there exists unique (up to a scaling) symmetric metric $g_0$ such that $(M,g_0)$ is the symmetric space $M = SO(2n+2)/U(n+1)$ or, respectively, $\mathbb{C}P^{2n-1}$. The manifolds $M_1$, $M_2$ are weakly symmetric spaces.

The classification of $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian manifolds with positive Euler characteristic

The authors give a short survey of previous results on $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian manifolds, forming a new proper subclass of geodesic orbit spaces with non-negative sectional curvature, which properly includes the class of all normal homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. As a continuation and an application of these results, they prove that the family of all compact simply connected indecomposable $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian manifolds with positive Euler characteristic, which are not normal homogeneous, consists exactly of all generalized flag manifolds $Sp(l)/U(1)\cdot Sp(l-1)=\mathbb{C}P^{2l-1}$, $l\geq 2$, supplied with invariant Riemannian metrics of positive sectional curvature with the pinching constants (the ratio of the minimal sectional curvature to the maximal one) in the open interval $(1/16, 1/4)$. This implies very unusual geometric properties of the adjoint representation of $Sp(l)$, $l\geq 2$. Some unsolved questions are suggested.

Clifford-Wolf homogeneous Riemannian manifolds

In this paper, using connections between Clifford-Wolf isometries and Killing vector fields of constant length on a given Riemannian manifold, we classify simply connected Clifford-Wolf homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. We also get the classification of complete simply connected Riemannian manifolds with the Killing property defined and studied previously by J.E. D'Atri and H.K. Nickerson. In the last part of the paper we study properties of Clifford-Killing spaces, that is, real vector spaces of Killing vector fields of constant length, on odd-dimensional round spheres, and discuss numerous connections between these spaces and various classical objects.

On $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian manifolds

We study in this paper previously defined by V.N. Berestovskii and C.P. Plaut $δ$-homogeneous spaces in the case of Riemannian manifolds. Every such manifold has non-negative sectional curvature. The universal covering of any $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian manifolds is itself $δ$-homogeneous. In turn, every simply connected Riemannian $δ$-homogeneous manifold is a direct metric product of an Euclidean space and compact simply connected indecomposable homogeneous manifolds; all factors in this product are itself $δ$-homogeneous. We find different characterizations of $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian spaces, which imply that any such space is geodesic orbit (g.o.) and every normal homogeneous Riemannian manifold is $δ$-homogeneous. The g.o. property and the $δ$-homogeneity property are inherited by closed totally geodesic submanifolds. Then we find all possible candidates for compact simply connected indecomposable Riemannian $δ$-homogeneous non-normal manifolds of positive Euler characteristic and a priori inequalities for parameters of the corresponding family of Riemannian $δ$-homogeneous metrics on them (necessarily two-parametric). We prove that there are only two families of possible candidates: non-normal (generalized) flag manifolds $SO(2l+1)/U(l)$ and $Sp(l)/U(1)\cdot Sp(l-1)$, $l\geq 2$, investigated earlier by W. Ziller, H. Tamaru, D.V. Alekseevsky and A. Arvanitoyeorgos. At the end we prove that the corresponding two-parametric family of Riemannian metrics on $SO(5)/U(2)=Sp(2)/U(1)\cdot Sp(1)$ satisfying the above mentioned (strict!) inequalities, really generates $δ$-homogeneous spaces, which are not normal and are not naturally reductive with respect to any isometry group.

Killing vector fields of constant length on Riemannian manifolds

In this paper nontrivial Killing vector fields of constant length and corresponding flows on smooth complete Riemannian manifolds are investigated. It is proved that such a flow on symmetric space is free or induced by a free isometric action of the circle $S^1$. The properties of the set of all points with finite (infinite) period for general isometric flow on Riemannian manifolds are described. It is shown that this flow is generated by an effective almost free isometric action of the group $S^1$ if there are no points of infinite or zero period. In the last case the set of periods is at most countable and naturally generates an invariant stratification with closed totally geodesic strata; the union of all regular orbits is open connected everywhere dense subset of complete measure. Examples of unit Killing vector fields generated by almost free but not free actions of $S^1$ on Riemannian manifolds close in some sense to symmetric spaces are constructed; among them are "almost round" odd-dimensional spheres, homogeneous (non simply connected) Riemannian manifolds of constant positive sectional curvature, locally Euclidean spaces, and unit vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds. Some curvature restrictions on Riemannian manifolds admitting nontrivial Killing vector fields of constant length are obtained. Some unsolved questions are formulated.
