Public transport networks: empirical analysis and modeling

We use complex network concepts to analyze statistical properties of urban public transport networks (PTN). To this end, we present a comprehensive survey of the statistical properties of PTNs based on the data of fourteen cities of so far unexplored network size. Especially helpful in our analysis are different network representations. Within a comprehensive approach we calculate PTN characteristics in all of these representations and perform a comparative analysis. The standard network characteristics obtained in this way often correspond to features that are of practical importance to a passenger using public traffic in a given city. Specific features are addressed that are unique to PTNs and networks with similar transport functions (such as networks of neurons, cables, pipes, vessels embedded in 2D or 3D space). Based on the empirical survey, we propose a model that albeit being simple enough is capable of reproducing many of the identified PTN properties. A central ingredient of this model is a growth dynamics in terms of routes represented by self-avoiding walks.

How does the scaling for the polymer chain in the dissipative particle dynamics hold?

We performed a series of simulations for a linear polymer chain in a solvent using dissipative particle dynamics to check the scaling relations for the end-to-end distance, radius of gyration and hydrodynamic radius in three dimensions. The polymer chains of up to 80 beads in explicit solvent of various quality are studied. To extract the scaling exponent ν, the data are analyzed using linear fits, correction-to-scaling forms and analytical fits to the histograms of radius of gyration distribution. For certain combinations of the polymer characteristics and solvent quality, the correction-to-scaling terms are found to be essential while for the others these are negligibly small. In each particular case the final value for the exponent νwas chosen according to the best least-squares fit. The values of νobtained in this way are found within the interval ν=0.55-0.61 but are concentrated mostly around 0.59, which is very close to the best known theoretical result ν=0.588. The existence of this interval is attributed both to the peculiarities of the method and to the moderate chain lengths being simulated. Within this shortcoming, the polymer chain in this kind of modeling is found to satisfy the scaling relations for all three radii being considered

Star polymers in correlated disorder

We analyze the impact of a porous medium (structural disorder) on the scaling of the partition function of a star polymer immersed in a good solvent. We show that corresponding scaling exponents change if the disorder is long-range-correlated and calculate the exponents in the new universality class. A notable finding is that star and chain polymers react in qualitatively different manner on the presence of disorder: the corresponding scaling exponents increase for chains and decrease for stars. We discuss the physical consequences of this difference.

Modeling Metropolis Public Transport

We present results of a survey of public transport networks (PTNs) of selected 14 major cities of the world with PTN sizes ranging between 2000 and 46000 stations and develop an evolutionary model of these networks. The structure of these PTNs is revealed in terms of a set of neighbourhood relations both for the routes and the stations. The networks defined in this way display distinguishing properties due to the constraints of the embedding 2D geographical space and the structure of the cities. In addition to the standard characteristics of complex networks like the number of nearest neighbours, mean path length, and clustering we observe features specific to PTNs. While other networks with real-world links like cables or neurons embedded in two or three dimensions often show similar behavior, these can be studied in detail in our present case. Geographical data for the routes reveal surprising self-avoiding walk properties that we relate to the optimization of surface coverage. We propose and simulate an evolutionary growth model based on effectively interacting self-avoiding walks that reproduces the key features of PTN.

Attack Vulnerability of Public Transport Networks

The behavior of complex networks under attack depends strongly on the specific attack scenario. Of special interest are scale-free networks, which are usually seen as robust under random failure or attack but appear to be especially vulnerable to targeted attacks. In a recent study of public transport networks of 14 major cities of the world we have shown that these networks may exhibit scale-free behaviour [Physica A 380, 585 (2007)]. Our further analysis, subject of this report, focuses on the effects that defunct or removed nodes have on the properties of public transport networks. Simulating different attack strategies we elaborate vulnerability criteria that allow to find minimal strategies with high impact on these systems.

Towards journalometrical analysis of a scientific periodical: a case study

In this paper we use several approaches to analyse a scientific journal as a complex system and to make a possibly more complete description of its current state and evolution. Methods of complex networks theory, statistics, and queueing theory are used in this study. As a subject of the analysis we have chosen the journal ``Condensed Matter Physics'' (http://www.icmp.lviv.ua/journal/). In particular, based on the statistical data regarding the papers published in this journal since its foundation in 1993 up to now we have composed the co-authorship network and extracted its main quantitative characteristics. Further, we analyse the priorities of scientific trends reflected in the journal and its impact on the publications in other editions (the citation ratings). Moreover, to characterize an efficiency of the paper processing, we study the time dynamics of editorial processing in terms of queueing theory and human activity analysis.

Mykyta the Fox and networks of language

The results of quantitative analysis of word distribution in two fables in Ukrainian by Ivan Franko: "Mykyta the Fox" and "Abu-Kasym's slippers" are reported. Our study consists of two parts: the analysis of frequency-rank distributions and the application of complex networks theory. The analysis of frequency-rank distributions shows that the text sizes are enough to observe statistical properties. The power-law character of these distributions (Zipf's law) holds in the region of rank variable r=20 - 3000 with an exponent $α\simeq 1$. This substantiates the choice of the above texts to analyse typical properties of the language complex network on their basis. Besides, an applicability of the Simon model to describe non-asymptotic properties of word distributions is evaluated. In describing language as a complex network, usually the words are associated with nodes, whereas one may give different meanings to the network links. This results in different network representations. In the second part of the paper, we give different representations of the language network and perform comparative analysis of their characteristics. Our results demonstrate that the language network of Ukrainian is a strongly correlated scale-free small world. Empirical data obtained may be useful for theoretical description of language evolution.

Model C critical dynamics of random anisotropy magnets

We study the relaxational critical dynamics of the three-dimensional random anisotropy magnets with the non-conserved n-component order parameter coupled to a conserved scalar density. In the random anisotropy magnets the structural disorder is present in a form of local quenched anisotropy axes of random orientation. When the anisotropy axes are randomly distributed along the edges of the n-dimensional hypercube, asymptotical dynamical critical properties coincide with those of the random-site Ising model. However structural disorder gives rise to considerable effects for non-asymptotic critical dynamics. We investigate this phenomenon by a field-theoretical renormalization group analysis in the two-loop order. We study critical slowing down and obtain quantitative estimates for the effective and asymptotic critical exponents of the order parameter and scalar density. The results predict complex scenarios for the effective critical exponent approaching an asymptotic regime.

Finite size induced phenomena in 2D classical spin models

We make a short overview of the recent analytic and numerical studies of the classical two-dimensional XY and Heisenberg models at low temperatures. Special attention is being paid to an influence of finite system size L on the peculiarities of the low-temperature phase. In accordance with the Mermin-Wagner-Hohenberg theorem, spontaneous magnetisation does not appear in the above models at infinite L. However it emerges for the finite system sizes and leads to new features of the low-temperature behaviour.

Impurity-impurity pair correlation function and paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition in the random Ising model

In this Monte Carlo study we concentrated on the influence of non-magnetic impurities arranged as the lines with random orientation on paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition in the 3D Ising model. Special emphasize is given to the long-distance decay of the impurity-impurity pair correlation function. It is shown that for the lattice sizes considered (L=10-96) and for the two different impurity distributions (purely random and mutually avoiding lines) the function is governed by the power law of 1/r^a with an universal exponent a \simeq 2. This result supports our findings about the numerical values of the critical exponents governing magnetic phase transition in the 3D Ising model with long-range-correlated disorder.

Reply to: ``Comment on `Spurious fixed points in frustrated magnets,' cond-mat/0609285"

The Comment of A. Pelissetto and E. Vicari (cond-mat/0610113) on our article (cond-mat/0609285) is based on misunderstandings of this article as well as on unfounded implicit assumptions. We clarify here the controversial points and show that, contrary to what is asserted by these authors, our paper is free of any contradiction and agrees with all well-established theoretical and experimental results. Also, we maintain that our work reveals pathologies in the (treatment of) perturbative approaches performed at fixed dimensions. In particular, we emphasize that the perturbative approaches to frustrated magnets performed either within the minimal substraction scheme without epsilon-expansion or in the massive scheme at zero momentum exhibit spurious fixed points and, thus, do not describe correctly the behaviour of these systems in three dimensions.

Spurious fixed points in frustrated magnets

We analyze the validity of perturbative estimations obtained at fixed dimensions in the study of frustrated magnets. To this end we consider the five-loop beta-functions obtained within the minimal subtraction scheme and exploited without epsilon-expansion both for frustrated magnets and for the well-controlled ferromagnetic systems with a cubic anisotropy. Comparing the two cases it appears that the fixed point supposed to control the second order phase transition of frustrated magnets is very likely an unphysical one. This is supported by the non-Gaussian character of this fixed point at the upper critical dimension d=4. Our work confirms the weak first order nature of the phase transition and constitutes a step towards a unified picture of existing theoretical approaches to frustrated magnets.

Introduction to renormalization

In these lectures I discuss peculiarities of the critical behaviour of ``non-ideal'' systems as it is explained by the renormalization group approach. Examples considered here include account of the single-ion anisotropy, structural disorder, frustrations. I introduce main ideas of renormalization and show how it serves the explanation of typical features of criticality in the above systems: softening of the phase transition, changes in the universality class, complicated effective critical behaviour.

Entropy-induced separation of star polymers in porous media

We present a quantitative picture of the separation of star polymers in a solution where part of the volume is influenced by a porous medium. To this end, we study the impact of long-range-correlated quenched disorder on the entropy and scaling properties of $f$-arm star polymers in a good solvent. We assume that the disorder is correlated on the polymer length scale with a power-law decay of the pair correlation function $g(r) \sim r^{-a}$. Applying the field-theoretical renormalization group approach we show in a double expansion in $ε=4-d$ and $δ=4-a$ that there is a range of correlation strengths $δ$ for which the disorder changes the scaling behavior of star polymers. In a second approach we calculate for fixed space dimension $d=3$ and different values of the correlation parameter $a$ the corresponding scaling exponents $γ_f$ that govern entropic effects. We find that $γ_f-1$, the deviation of $γ_f$ from its mean field value is amplified by the disorder once we increase $δ$ beyond a threshold. The consequences for a solution of diluted chain and star polymers of equal molecular weight inside a porous medium are: star polymers exert a higher osmotic pressure than chain polymers and in general higher branched star polymers are expelled more strongly from the correlated porous medium. Surprisingly, polymer chains will prefer a stronger correlated medium to a less or uncorrelated medium of the same density while the opposite is the case for star polymers.

Local and cluster critical dynamics of the 3d random-site Ising model

We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations for the critical dynamics of the three-dimensional site-diluted quenched Ising model. Three different dynamics are considered, these correspond to the local update Metropolis scheme as well as to the Swendsen-Wang and Wolff cluster algorithms. The lattice sizes of L=10-96 are analysed by a finite-size-scaling technique. The site dilution concentration p=0.85 was chosen to minimize the correction-to-scaling effects. We calculate numerical values of the dynamical critical exponents for the integrated and exponential autocorrelation times for energy and magnetization. As expected, cluster algorithms are characterized by lower values of dynamical critical exponent than the local one: also in the case of dilution critical slowing down is more pronounced for the Metropolis algorithm. However, the striking feature of our estimates is that they suggest that dilution leads to decrease of the dynamical critical exponent for the cluster algorithms. This phenomenon is quite opposite to the local dynamics, where dilution enhances critical slowing down.

Model C critical dynamics of disordered magnets

The critical dynamics of model C in the presence of disorder is considered. It is known that in the asymptotics a conserved secondary density decouples from the nonconserved order parameter for disordered systems. However couplings between order parameter and secondary density cause considerable effects on non-asymptotic critical properties. Here, a general procedure for a renormalization group treatment is proposed. Already the one-loop approximation gives a qualitatively correct picture of the diluted model C dynamical criticality. A more quantitative description is achieved using two-loop approximation. In order to get reliable results resummation technique has to be applied.

Static and dynamic critical behaviour of 3d random site Ising model: different Monte Carlo algorithms

We perform numerical simulations to study static and dynamic critical behaviour of the 3d random-site Ising model. A distinct feature of our approach is a combination of the Metropolis, Swendsen-Wang, and Wolff Monte Carlo algorithms. For the static critical behaviour, these approaches are the complementary ones, whereas in dynamics they correspond to three different types of relaxation, being a particular subject of our study.

Enhancement of the critical slowing down influenced by extended defects

We study an influence of the quenched extended defects on the critical dynamics of the d=3-dimensional systems with m-component non-conserved order parameter (model A dynamics). Considering defects to be correlated in ε_d dimensions and randomly distributed in d-ε_d dimensions we obtain reliable numerical values for the critical exponents governing divergence of the relaxation time as function of m and ε_d.
