The Black Hole Mass and Magnetic Field Correlation in AGN: Testing by Optical Polarimetry

We consider the integral light polarization from optically thick accretion disks. Basic mechanism is the multiple light scattering on free electrons (Milne's problem) in magnetized atmosphere. The Faraday rotation of the polarization plane changes both the value of integral polarization degree $p$ and the position angle $χ$. Besides, the characteristic spectra of these values appear. We are testing the known relation between magnetic field of black hole at the horizon $B_{BH}$ and its mass $M_{BH}$, and the usual power-law distribution inside the accretion disk. The formulae for $p(λ)$ and $χ(λ)$ depend on a number of parameters describing the particular dependence of magnetic field in accretion disk (the index of power-law distribution, the spin of the black hole, etc.). Comparison of our theoretical values of $p$ and $χ$ with observed polarization can help us to choice more realistic values of parameters if the accretion disk mechanism gives the main contribution to the observed integral polarization. The main content is connected with estimation of validity of the relation between $B_{BH}$ and $M_{BH}$. We found for the AGN NGC 4258 that such procedure does not confirm the mentioned correlation between magnetic field and mass of black hole.

Magnetic Fields of Nearby Active Galactic Nuclei and Correlation of the Highest-Energy Cosmic Rays with their Positions

The correlation between the pointing direction of ultra high energy cosmic rays and AGN observed by the Pierre Auger Collaboration is explained in the framework of acceleration process in AGN. This acceleration process is produced by a rotating accretion disk around a black hole that is frozen-in magnetic field. In a result the accretion disk is acting as a induction accelerator of cosmic rays. We estimate the resulting magnetic field in the framework of the magnetic coupling process. The results of our calculations allow to make the conclusion that the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars appear the effective cosmic accelerators. We estimate also the attenuation of highest-energy cosmic rays in a result of their interaction with ambient radiation field.

Photon-Axion-Like Particle Coupling Constant and Cosmological Observations

We estimated the photon-pseudoscalar particle mixing constant from the effect of cosmological alignment and cosmological rotation of polarization plane of distant QSOs. This effect is explained in terms of birefringent phenomenon due to photon-pseudoscalar (axion-like) particle mixing in a cosmic magnetic field. On the contrary, one can estimate the strength of the cosmic magnetic field using the constraints on the photon-axion-like particle coupling constant from the CAST experiment and from SNe Ia dimming effect. In a result, the lower limit on the intergalactic ($z\approx 1÷2$) magnetic field appears at the level of about $4\times 10^{-10}÷10^{-11}$ G.

Synchrotron Self-Absorption Process in GRBs and the Isotropic Energy - Peak Energy Fundamental Relation

The existence of strong correlation between the peak luminosity (and/or bolometric energetics) of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) is one of the most intrigue problem of GRB physics. This correlation is not yet understood. Here we demonstrate that this correlation can be explained in framework of synchrotron self-absorption (SSA) mechanism of GRB prompt emission. We estimate the magnetic field strength of the central engine at the level $B\sim 10^{14} (10^3/Γ)^3 (1+z)^2$, where $Γ$ is the Lorentz factor of fireball.

Observational Constraints on the Angular and Spectral Distributions of Photons in Gamma-Ray Burst Sources

The typical spectra of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are discussed in the context of the compactness problem for GRB sources and how it is resolved in the popular fireball model. In particular, observational (model-independent) constraints on the collimation of the gamma-rays and the dependence of the collimation angle on the photon energy are considered. The fact that the threshold for the creation of $e^{-}e^{+}$ pairs depends on the angle between the momenta of the annihilating photons in the GRB source provides an alternative solution to the compactness problem. A new approach to explaining GRBs, taking into account the angular dependence for pair creation, is proposed, and the main features of a scenario describing a GRB source with a total (photon) energy smaller or of the order of $10^{49}$ erg are laid out. Thus, we are dealing with an alternative to an ultra-relativistic fireball, if it turns out (as follows from observations) that all "long" GRBs are associated with normal (not peculiar) core-collapse supernovae. The effects of radiation pressure and the formation of jets as a consequence of even a small amount of anisotropy in the total radiation field in a (compact) GRB source are examined in this alternative model. Possible energy release mechanisms acting in regions smaller or of the order of $10^{8}$ cm in size (a compact model for a GRB) are discussed. New observational evidence for such compact energy release in the burst source is considered.

PVLAS Experiment: Some Astrophysical Consequences

The birefringent effects of photon-pseudoscalar boson (Goldstone) particle mixing in intergalactic magnetic field are calculated for cosmological objects. We use the recent results of PVLAS collaboration that reported recently the observation of a rotation of the polarization plane of light propagating through a transverse static magnetic field. Such results which were interpretated as arising due to conversion of photon into pseudoscalar with coupling strength $g_{aγ}\sim 4\times 10^{-6} GeV^{-1}$ allows us to estimate the intergalactic magnetic field magnitude as $\sim 10^{-16} G$ based on Hatsemekers et al. observations of extreme-scale alignments of quasar polarization vectors. We have analyzed some additional results of astronomical observations that could be explained by axion interpretation of the PVLAS data: a sharp steepening of the QSO continuum short ward of $\simeq 1100$Å, observed circular polarization of AGNs and QSOs, discrepancy between observed intrinsic polarization of stars in the Local Bubble and stellar spectral classification. The observed polarization of stars in the Local Bubble can't be explained by interstellar origin.

Collimated high-energy photons and others possible observational effects of the photon angular and spectral distribution in gamma-ray bursts sources

Typical observational gamma-ray burst (GRB) spectra are discussed and, in this connection, what is the origin of the compactness problem and how it was solved at first. If the threshold for $e^{-}e^{+}$ pair production depends on an angle between photon momenta, then another solution of the compactness problem is possible. We discuss a possibility of the $γ$-rays collimation and the dependence of photon beaming on photon energies. The list of basic assumptions of the scenario describing the GRB source with energy $< 10^{49}$ ergs are adduced: the matter is about an alternative to the ultrarelativistic fireball if {\it all} long-duration GRBs are related or physically connected with {\it normal/unpeculiar} core-collapse supernovae (SNe). Namely, we consider the questions about radiation pressure and how the jet arises on account of even small asymmetry of the radiation field in a compact GRB source. The possibility of a new approach to explanation of GRB phenomenon is shown. Possible mechanisms of their generation in regions of size $< 10^8$cm are discussed (a compact model of GRBs). Observational consequences of the compact GRB energy release are considered.

On solar neutrino fluxes in radiochemical experiments

We analyze fluctuations of the solar neutrino flux using data from the Homestake, GALLEX, GNO, SAGE and Super Kamiokande experiments. Spectral analysis and direct quantitative estimations show that the most stable variation of the solar neutrino flux is a quasi-five-year periodicity. The revised values of the mean solar neutrino flux are presented in Table 4. They were used to estimate the observed pp-flux of the solar electron neutrinos near the Earth. We consider two alternative explanations for the origin of a variable component of the solar neutrino deficit.

Magnetic fields of active galaxy nuclei and cosmological models

We present the review of various methods of detection of magnetic field strengths in the nearest regions of the active galaxy nuclei (AGN) which are the high energetic machines. Original spectropolarimetric method developed in the Pulkovo Observatory allows us to determine the magnitude and geometry of the magnetic field in the region of the optical and more hard electromagnetic radiation. The results of theoretical calculations are compared to the results of spectropolarimetric observations of AGN. We used the method of determining magnetic fields through the spectrum synchrotron radiation in the region of synchrotron self-absorption. As the magnitude of magnetic field of the extragalactic source depends very strongly on the angular size of extragalactic source and therefore on the photometric distance the calculated magnetic field magnitudes depends very strongly on the definite cosmological model. This result allows us to present the new method for determination of the most important cosmological parameters including dark matter and dark energy parameters.

INTEGRAL observations of SS433: Results of coordinated campaign

Results of simultaneous INTEGRAL and optical observations of galactic microquasar SS433 in May 2003 and INTEGRAL/RXTE observations in March 2004 are presented. Persistent precessional variability with a maximum to minimum uneclipsed hard X-ray flux ratio of \sim 4 is discovered. The 18-60 keV X-ray eclipse is found to be in phase with optical and near infrared eclipses. The orbital eclipse observed by INTEGRAL in May 2003 is at least two times deeper and apparently wider than in soft X-ray band. The broadband X-ray spectrum 2-100 keV simultaneously detected by RXTE/INTEGRAL in March 2004 can be described by bremsstrahlung emission from optically thin thermal plasma with kT\sim 30 keV. The optical spectroscopy with the 6-m SAO BTA telescope confirmed the optical companion to be an A5-A7 supergiant. For the first time, spectorscopic indications of a strong heating effect in the optical star atmosphere are found. The measurements of absorption lines which are presumably formed in the non-illuminated side of the supergiant yield its radial velocity semi-amplitude K_v=132\pm 9 km/s. The analysis of the observed hard X-ray light curve and the eclipse duration, combined with spectroscopically found optical star radial velocity corrected for the strong heating effect, allows us to model SS433 as a massive X-ray binary. Assuming that the hard X-ray source in SS433 is eclipsed by the donor star that exactly fills its Roche lobe, the masses of the optical and compact components in SS433 are suggested to be M_v\approx 30 M_\odot and M_x\approx 9M_\odot, respectively. This provides further evidence that SS433 is a massive binary system with supercritical accretion onto a black hole.

Polarization from a Strongly Magnetized Accretion Disks: Asymptotic Wavelength Behaviour

We calculate the polarization of radiation from thick accretion disks with vertically averaged global magnetic field. The polarization arises as a result of the radiation scattering by free electrons in magnetized plasma of a disk. We consider as a basic effect the Faraday rotation of polarization plane along the photon propagation in a magnetized disk. The various models of optically thick accretion disk with a vertically averaged magnetic field are considered. The main goal of this paper is to obtain simple asymptotic formulae for the polarization of radiation when the Faraday rotation angle >> 1 at the Thomson optical length ~1. The results of our calculation allows us to estimate the magnetic field magnitude near the marginally stable orbit region of a black hole via the data of polarimetric observations including the expected future X-ray polarimetric observations. The wavelength dependence of polarization is strongly dependent on various models of an accretion disks and thus allows to choose a real model from the polarization data.

Spectropolarimetry and Infrared Photometry of Magnetic White Dwarfs: Vacuum Polarization Effect or Magnetic CIA?

We present brief review of two probable physical mechanisms that can explain the results of photometric and spectropolarimetric observations of magnetic white dwarfs: vacuum polarization effect into a strong magnetic field and, so-called, magnetic collision induced absorption (magnetic CIA). Both mechanisms provide observed rotation of polarization ellipse and suppression of spectral energy distributions. The results of spectropolarimetric observations of magnetic white dwarfs made at Russian BTA-6m and the results of the near infrared photometric observations with Russian-Italian AZT-24 telescope located at Campo Imperatore are also presented.

The Solution of the Milne Problem for Magnetized Atmosphere

The numerical solution of the Milne problem for semi-infinite plane-parallel magnetized electron atmosphere is obtained. It is assumed that magnetic field is directed along the normal to the atmosphere. The angular dependence, the polarization degree and positional angle of outgoing radiation are presented in the tables for various values of the Faraday rotation parameter and the degree of absorption q=0, 0.2 and 0.4. We assume that magnetic field B~1000000G when one can neglect the effects of circular dichroism and take into account only the Faraday rotation effect.

The polarization effects of radiation from magnetized envelopes and extended accretion structures

The results of numerical calculations of linear polarization from magnetized spherical optically thick and optically thin envelopes are presented. We give the methods how to distinguish magnetized optically thin envelopes from optically thick ones using observed spectral distributions of the polarization degree and the positional angle. The results of numerical calculations are used for analysis of polarimetric observations of OB and WR stars, X-ray binaries with black hole candidates (Cyg X-1, SS 433) and supernovae. The developed method allows to estimate magnetic field strength for the objects mentioned above.

Coordinated INTEGRAL and optical observations of SS433

Results of simultaneous {\it INTEGRAL} and optical observations of galactic microquasar SS433 in May 2003 are presented. The analysis of the X-ray and optical eclipse duration and hard X-ray spectra obtained by {\it INTEGRAL} together with optical spectroscopy obtained on the 6-m telescope allows us to construct a model of SS433 as a massive X-ray binary. X-ray eclipse in hard X-rays has a depth of $\sim 80%$ and extended wings. The optical spectroscopy allows us to identify the optical companion as a A5-A7 supergiant and to measure its radial velocity semi-amplitude $K_v=132$ km/s. A strong heating effect in the optical star atmosphere is discovered spectroscopically. The observed broadband X-ray spectrum 2-100 keV can be described by emission from optically thin thermal plasma with $kT\sim 15-20 keV$

Magnetic and Electric Fields around the Black Hole in Cyg X-1

Analysis of polarimetric observations of X-ray binary Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 including the data obtained by BTA-6m allows to estimate the magnetic field magnitude near the inner radius of the accretion disk. The magnetic field magnitude occurred to be $\sim 10^{8}$ G. For power law of radial dependence of magnetic field into an accretion disk we estimates the value of an index of power law. For the Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 system the value of this index appears non less then two. If one accepts as a characteristic scale of a magnetic field generation region the dyadosphere radius, one can estimate the charge magnitude of a black hole. For Cyg X-1 this magnitude appears to be $\sim 0.01M\sqrt{G}$, where M is a black hole mass.

Sco X-1 and Cyg X-1: Determination of Strength and Structure of Magnetic Field in the Nearest Environment of Accreting Compact Stars

We estimated the magnetic field strength of compact stars in X-ray binaries Sco X-1 and Cyg X-1, via various methods of determination of magnetic fields. For Sco X-1 we used three independent methods. One of them is based on the correct account of the Faraday rotation of polarization plane in the process of electron scattering of X-rays from accreting neutron stars. Numerical calculations are made with use of first X-rays polarimetric data presented by Long et al. (1979). Other original method of determing the magnetic field developed by Titarchuk at al. (2001) is based on observed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) frequencies in X-ray binaries that can be considered as magnetoacoustic oscillations of boundary layer near a neutron star. The optical polarimetric data obtained in 70-th have been also used for estimation of magnetic field of the neutron star in Sco X-1 and of nearest environment around the black hole in Cyg X-1.

Astrophysical Polarimetric Signature Against TeV Fundamental Planck Scale

I present the analysis of data of astrophysical polarimetric observations that gives the signature of the fundamental extra dimension Planck scale magnitude essentially higher than $~1TeV$. Magnetic conversion of photons into the fundamental particles (scalars, gravitons) is the probable mechanism that can produce noticeable amount of polarization of optical radiation of astrophysical objects, especially, of distant extragalactic sources. The results of magnetic conversion process of optical light of extragalactic sources are presented for a number of situations including: (a) intergalactic magnetic field, (b) galaxy cluster magnetic field, (c) magnetic conversion in the typical galaxy magnetic field, (d) magnetic conversion of CMB radiation.
