Magnetic interference patterns in superconducting junctions: Effects of anharmonic current-phase relations

A microscopic theory of the magnetic-field modulation of critical currents is developed for plane Josephson junctions with anharmonic current-phase relations. The results obtained allow examining temperature-dependent deviations of the modulation from the conventional interference pattern. For tunneling through localized states in symmetric short junctions with a pronounced anharmonic behavior, the deviations are obtained and shown to depend on distribution of channel transparencies. For constant transparency the deviations vanish not only near Tc, but also at T=0. If Dorokhov bimodal distribution for transparency eigenvalues holds, the averaged deviation increases with decreasing temperature and takes its maximum at T=0.

Sublattice model of atomic scale pairing inhomogeneity in a superconductor

We study a toy model for a superconductor on a bipartite lattice, where intrinsic pairing inhomogeneity is produced by two different coupling constants on the sublattices. The simplicity of the model allows for analytic solutions and tests of the consequences of atomic-scale variations in pairing interactions which have been considered recently in the cuprates. We present results for the transition temperature, density of states, and thermodynamics of the system over a phase diagram in the plane of two pairing coupling constants. For coupling constants of alternating sign, a gapless superconducting state is stable. Inhomogeneity is generally found to enhance the critical temperature, and at the same time the superfluid density is remarkably robust: at T=0, it is suppressed only in the gapless phase.

Low-energy subgap states and the magnetic flux periodicity in d-wave superconducting rings

Wave functions of low-energy quasiparticle subgap states in d-wave superconducting rings, threaded by Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux, are found analytically. The respective energies are closest to the midgap position at small magnetic fluxes and deviate from the Fermi surface due to the Doppler shift, produced by the supercurrent. The Doppler-shifted zero-energy states result in a paramagnetic response of the ring at small fluxes. The states exist only for even angular momenta of the center of mass of Cooper pairs, in agreement with recent numerical studies of the problem. This macroscopic quantum effect in d-wave rings results in broken h/2e periodicity, retaining only the h/e periodic behavior of the supercurrent with varying magnetic flux.

h/e-Periodicity in Superconducting Loops

The magnetic flux periodicity of superconducting loops as well as flux quantization itself are a manifestation of macroscopic quantum phenomena with far reaching implications. They provide the key to the understanding of many fundamental properties of superconductors and are the basis for most bulk and device applications of these materials. In superconducting rings the electrical current has been known to periodically respond to a magnetic flux with a periodicity of $\bm{h/2e}$. Here, the ratio of Planck's constant and the elementary charge defines the magnetic flux quantum $\bm{h/e}$. The well-known $\bm{h/2e}$ periodicity is viewed to be a hallmark for electronic pairing in superconductors and is considered evidence for the existence of Cooper pairs. Here we show that in contrast to this long-term belief, rings of many superconductor bear an $\bm{h/e}$ periodicity. These superconductors include the high-$\bm{T_c}$ cuprates, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, the heavy-fermion superconductors, as well as all other unconventional superconductors with nodes in the energy gap functions, and s-wave superconductors with small gaps or states in the gap. As we show, the 50-year-old Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer theory of superconductivity implies that for multiply connected paths of such superconductors the ground-state energies and consequently also the supercurrents are generically $\bm{h/e}$ periodic. The origin of this periodicity is a magnetic-field driven reconstruction of the condensate and a concomitant Doppler-shifted energy spectrum. The robust, flux induced reconstruction of the condensate will be an important aspect to understand the magnetic properties of mesoscopic unconventional superconductors.

Novel Josephson Effects in d-wave Superconductor Junctions with Antiferromagnetic Interlayers

We calculate the dc supercurrent through a Josephson tunnel junction consisting of an antiferromagnetic (AF) interlayer sandwiched between two d-wave superconductors (d). Such d/AF/d junctions exhibit a rich dependence of the Josephson current on the interlayer parameters, including the possibility of 0-pi transitions with varying temperature or interlayer thickness. Furthermore, we study d/I/d junctions when the dSC leads include subdominant magnetic correlations. In this case induced magnetism near the interface can strongly diminish the critical current for 110 oriented junctions whereas no suppression is obtained for the 100 orientation. This may help resolve a long-standing puzzle of the critical current versus grain boundary angle in high-T_c superconductors.

0-pi transitions in Josephson junctions with antiferromagnetic interlayers

We show that the dc Josephson current through superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor (S/AF/S) junctions manifests a remarkable atomic scale dependence on the interlayer thickness. At low temperatures the junction is either a 0- or pi-junction depending on whether the AF interlayer consists of an even or odd number of atomic layers. This is associated with different symmetries of the AF interlayers in the two cases. In the junction with odd AF interlayers an additional pi-0 transition can take place as a function of temperature. This originates from the interplay of spin-split Andreev bound states. Experimental implications of these theoretical findings are discussed.

Bound states at the interface between antiferromagnets and superconductors

We present a detailed theoretical investigation of interfaces and junctions involving itinerant antiferromagnets. By solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with a tight-binding model on a square lattice, we study both the self-consistent order parameter fields proximate to interfaces between antiferromagnets (AF) and s-wave (sSC) or d-wave (dSC) superconductors, the dispersion of quasiparticle subgap states at interfaces and interlayers, and the local density of states (LDOS) as a function of distance from the interface. In addition, we present the quasiclassical approach to interfaces and junctions involving itinerant antiferromagnets developed in an earlier paper. Analytical results are in excellent agreement with what we obtain numerically. Strong effects of pair breaking in the presence of low-energy interface Andreev states are found in particular for AF/sSC interfaces when interface potentials are not too high. Potential barriers induce additional extrema in the dispersive quasiparticle spectra with corresponding peaks in the LDOS. Discrete quasiparticle dispersive levels in AF - normal metal (N) - AF systems are found to strongly depend on the misorientation angle of the magnetizations in the two antiferromagnets.

Electronic structure of d-wave superconducting quantum wires

We present analytical and numerical results for the electronic spectra of wires of a d-wave superconductor on a square lattice. The spectra of Andreev and other quasiparticle states, as well as the spatial and particle-hole structures of their wave functions, depend on interference effects caused by the presence of the surfaces and are qualitatively different for half-filled wires with even or odd number of chains. For half-filled wires with an odd number of chains N at (110) orientation, spectra consist of N doubly degenerate branches. By contrast, for even N wires, these levels are split, and all quasiparticle states, even the ones lying above the maximal gap, have the characteristic properties of Andreev bound states. These Andreev states above the gap can be interpreted as a consequence of an infinite sequence of Andreev reflections experienced by quasiparticles along their trajectories bounded by the surfaces of the wire. Our microscopic results for the local density of states display atomic-scale Friedel oscillations due to the presence of the surfaces, which should be observable by scanning tunneling microscopy. For narrow wires the self-consistent treatment of the order parameter is found to play a crucial role. In particular, we find that for small wire widths the finite geometry may drive strong fluctuations or even stablilize exotic quasi-1D pair states with spin triplet character.

Low-energy quasiparticle states at superconductor-CDW interfaces

Quasiparticle bound states are found theoretically on transparent interfaces of d-wave superconductors (dSC) with charge density wave solids (CDW), as well as s-wave superconductors (sSC) with d-density waves (DDW). These bound states represent a combined effect of Andreev reflection from the superconducting side and an unconventional quasiparticle Q-reflection from the density wave solid. If the order parameter for a density wave state is much less than the Fermi energy, bound states with almost zero energy take place for an arbitrary orientation of symmetric interfaces. For larger values of the order parameter, dispersionless zero-energy states are found only on (110) interfaces. Two dispersive energy branches of subgap quasiparticle states are obtained for (100) symmetric interfaces. Andreev low-energy bound states, taking place in junctions with CDW or DDW interlayers, result in anomalous junction properties, in particular, the low-temperature behavior of the Josephson critical current.

Effects of spin-orbit interaction on superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures: spontaneous electric and spin surface currents

We find proximity-induced spontaneous spin and electric surface currents, at all temperatures below the superconducting T_c, in an isotropic s-wave superconductor deposited with a thin ferromagnetic metal layer with spin-orbit interaction. The currents are carried by Andreev surface states and generated as a joint effect of the spin-orbit interaction and the exchange field. The background spin current arises in the thin layer due to different local spin polarizations of electrons and holes, which have almost opposite velocities in each of the surface states. The spontaneous surface electric current in the superconductor originates in asymmetry of Andreev states with respect to sign reversal of the momentum component parallel to the surface. Conditions for electric and spin currents to show up in the system, significantly differ from each other.

Spin-dependent quasiparticle reflection and bound states at interfaces with itinerant antiferromagnets

We present a formulation of the quasiclassical theory of junctions between itinerant antiferromagnets (AF) and s-wave (sSC) and d-wave superconductors (dSC). For the simplest two-sublattice antiferromagnet on a bipartite lattice, we derive Andreev-type equations and show that their solutions lead to a novel channel of quasiparticle reflection. In particular, quasiparticles in a normal metal with energies less than or comparable to the antiferromagnetic gap experience spin-dependent retroreflection at antiferromagnet-normal metal (AF/N) transparent (100) and (110) interfaces. A relative phase difference of pi between up spin and down spin quasiparticle reflection amplitudes is shown to lead to zero-energy interface bound states on AF/sSC interfaces. For an sSC/AF/sSC junction, these bound states are found to be split, due to a finite width of the AF interlayer, and carry the supercurrent. At AF/dSC interfaces we find no zero-energy bound states for both interface orientations we considered, in contrast with the case of (110) impenetrable surface of a dSC.

Two regimes for effects of surface disorder on the zero-bias conductance peak of tunnel junctions involving d-wave superconductors

Impurity-induced quasiparticle bound states on a pair-breaking surface of a d-wave superconductor are theoretically described, taking into account hybridization of impurity- and surface-induced Andreev states. Further a theory for effects of surface disorder (of thin impurity surface layer) on the low-bias conductance of tunnel junctions is developed. We find a threshold $n_c$ for surface impurity concentration $n_S$, which separates the two regimes for surface impurity effects on the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP). Below the threshold, surface impurities do not broaden the ZBCP, but effectively reduce its weight and generate impurity bands. For low $n_S$ impurity bands can be, in principle, resolved experimentally, being centered at energies of bound states induced by an isolated impurity on the surface. For larger $n_S$ impurity bands are distorted, move to lower energies and, beginning with the threshold concentration $n_S=n_c$, become centered at zero energy. With increasing $n_S$ above the threshold, the ZBCP is quickly destroyed in the case of strong scatterers, while it is gradually suppressed and broaden in the presence of weak impurity potentials. More realistic cases, taking into account additional broadening, not related to the surface disorder, are also considered.

Josephson Current in S-FIF-S Junctions: Nonmonotonic Dependence on Misorientation Angle

Spectra and spin structures of Andreev interface states in S-FIF-S junctions are investigated with emphasis on finite transparency and misorientation angle between in-plane magnetizations of ferromagnetic layers in a three-layer interface. It is demonstrated that the Josephson current in S-FIF-S quantum point contacts can exhibit a nonmonotonic dependence on the misorientation angle. The characteristic behavior takes place, if the pi-state is the equilibrium state of the junction in the particular case of parallel magnetizations.

Interplay of spin-discriminated Andreev bound states forming the 0-$π$ transition in Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor Junctions

The Josephson current in S-F-S junctions is described by taking into account different reflection (transmission) amplitudes for quasiparticles with spin up and down. We show that the 0-$π$ transition in the junctions can take place at some temperature only for sufficiently strong spin-activity of the interface. In particular, Andreev interface bound state energies in one spin channel have to be all negative, while in the other one positive. Only one spin channel contributes then to the zero-temperature Josephson current. At the temperature of the 0-$π$ transition two spin channels substantially compensate each other and can result in a pronounced minimum in the critical current in tunnel junctions. The minimal critical current is quadratic in small transparency and contains first and second harmonics of one and the same order.

Josephson current between chiral superconductors

We study chiral interface Andreev bound states and their influence on the Josephson current between clean superconductors. Possible examples are superconducting Sr2RuO4 and the B-phase of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt3. We show that, under certain conditions, the low-energy chiral surface states enhance the critical current of symmetric tunnel junctions at low temperatures. The enhancement is substantially more pronounced in quantum point contacts. In classical junctions dispersive chiral states result in a logarithmic dependence of the critical current. This logarithmic behavior contains the temperature, the barrier transparency and the broadening of the bound states, and depends on the detailed relation between these parameters. The Josephson current through the domain wall doesn't acquire this logarithmic enhancement, although the contribution from the bound states is important in this case as well.

Low-Temperature Magnetic Penetration Depth in d-Wave Superconductors: Zero-Energy Bound State and Impurity Effects

We report a theoretical study on the deviations of the Meissner penetration depth $λ(T)$ from its London value in d-wave superconductors at low temperatures. The difference arises from low-energy surface Andreev bound states. The temperature dependent penetration depth is shown to go through a minimum at the temperature $T_{m0}\sim \sqrt{ξ_0/λ_0}T_c$ if the broadening of the bound states is small. The minimum will straighten out when the broadening reaches $T_{m0}$. The impurity scattering sets up the low-temperature anomalies of the penetration depth and destroys them when the mean free path is not sufficiently large. A phase transition to a state with spontaneous surface supercurrent is investigated and its critical temperature determined in the absence of a subdominant channel activated at low temperatures near the surface. Nonlinear corrections from Andreev low-energy bound states to the penetration length are obtained and shown, on account of their broadening, to be small in the Meissner state of strong type II superconductors.

Quasiparticle Interface States in Junctions Involving d-Wave Superconductors

Influence of surface pair breaking, barrier transmission and phase difference on quasiparticle bound states in junctions with d-wave superconductors is examined. Based on the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity, an approach is developed to handle interface bound states. It is shown in SIS' junctions that low energy bound states get their energies reduced by surface pair breaking, which can be taken into account by introducing an effective order parameter for each superconductor at the junction barrier. More interestingly, for the interface bound states near the continuous spectrum the effect of surface pair breaking may result in a splitting of the bound states. In the tunneling limit this can lead to a square root dependence of a nonequilibrium Josephson current on the barrier transmision, which means an enhancement as compared to the conventional critical current linear in the transmission. Reduced broadening of bound states in NIS junctions due to surface pair breaking is found.

Comment on ``Electrical Transport in Junctions between Unconventional Superconductors: Application of the Green Function Formalism''

Effect of surface pair breaking, entirely neglected by M. Samanta and S. Datta [Phys. Rev. B v. 57, 10972 (1998)], is quite important in considering surface (or interface) quasiparticle bound states and associated characteristics of junctions involving unconventional superconductors. The whole class of bound states with nonzero energy is simply omitted within the framework of the approach, using uniform spatial profile of the order parameter up to the interface. The contribution of these bound states (as well as midgap states) to current-voltage characteristics of the SIS' tunnel junctions were studied for the first time in our earlier article. Dependence of midgap state contribution to the Josephson critical current upon crystal to interface orientations is shown as well to be fairly sensitive to the effect of surface pair breaking.
