Hyperbolic phonon-plasmon polaritons in a hBN-graphene van der Waals structure

In this paper a thorough theoretical study of a new class of collective excitations, dubbed hyperbolic surface phonon plasmon polaritons, is performed. This new type of light-matter excitations are shown to have unique properties that allows to explore them both as the basis of ultra-sensitive devices to the dielectric nature of its surroundings. The system is a van der Waals heterostructure -- a layered metamaterial, composed of different 2D materials in direct contact one with another, namely graphene ribbons and hexagonal boron nitride slabs of nanometric size. In the paper we discuss the spectrum of these new class of excitations, the associated electromagnetic fields, the sensitivity to the dielectric function of its surroundings, and the absorption spectrum. All this is accomplished using an analytical model that considerably diminishes the computational burden, as well as elucidates the underling physical mechanism of the excitations supported by the device.

Scattering of graphene plasmons at abrupt interfaces: an analytic and numeric study

We discuss the scattering of graphene surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) at an interface between two semi-infinite graphene sheets with different doping levels and/or different underlying dielectric substrates. We take into account retardation effects and the emission of free radiation in the scattering process. We derive approximate analytic expressions for the reflection and the transmission coefficients of the SPPs as well as the same quantities for the emitted free radiation. We show that the scattering problem can be recast as a Fredholm equation of the second kind. Such equation can then be solved by a series expansion, with the first term of the series correspond to our approximated analytical solution for the reflection and transmission amplitudes. We have found that almost no free radiation is emitted in the scattering process and that under typical experimental conditions the back-scattered SPP transports very little energy. This work provides a theoretical description of graphene plasmon scattering at an interface between distinct Fermi levels which could be relevant for the realization of plasmonic circuitry elements such as plasmonic lenses or reflectors, and for controlling plasmon propagation by modulating the potential landscape of graphene.

Magnetic-field-assisted transmission of THz waves through a graphene layer combined with a periodically perforated metallic film

We consider a graphene sheet encapsulated in a two-dimensional metallic grating and a substrate ($\mathrm{Al_{2}O_{3}}$) and subjected to an external magnetic field (in Faraday configuration). The grating consists of a thin perfectly conducting metal film perforated with a 2D periodic array of square holes. According to our calculations, significant changes in the spectra of the Faraday rotation angle of the transmitted wave and of the magnetic circular dichroism should be expected in this situation compared to bare graphene. We explain this enhancement by the excitation of graphene magnetoplasmons that accompanies the transmission of the electromagnetic wave through the structure. The results can be interesting for applications in THz photonics, such as switchable rotating polarizer and optical isolator.

An escape of vector matter-wave soliton from a parabolic trap

We show that a vector matter-wave soliton in Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into an optical lattice can escape from a trap formed by a parabolic potential, resembling a Hawking emission. The particle-antiparticle pair is emulated by a low-amplitude bright-bright soliton in two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with effective masses of opposite signs. It is shown that the parabolic potential leads to a spatial separation of BEC components. One component with chemical potential in a semi-infinite gap exerts periodical oscillations, while the other BEC component, with negative effective mass, escapes from the trap. The mechanism of atoms transfer from one BEC component to another by spatially periodic linear coupling term is discussed.

Modeling the Excitation of Graphene Plasmons in Periodic Grids of Graphene Ribbons: An Analytical Approach

We study electromagnetic scattering and subsequent plasmonic excitations in periodic grids of graphene ribbons. To address this problem, we develop an analytical method to describe the plasmon-assisted absorption of electromagnetic radiation by a periodic structure of graphene ribbons forming a diffraction grating for THz and mid-IR light. The major advantage of this method lies in its ability to accurately describe the excitation of graphene surface plasmons (GSPs) in one-dimensional (1D) graphene gratings without the use of both time-consuming, and computationally-demanding full-wave numerical simulations. We thus provide analytical expressions for the reflectance, transmittance and plasmon-enhanced absorbance spectra, which can be readily evaluated in any personal laptop with little-to-none programming. We also introduce a semi-analytical method to benchmark our previous results and further compare the theoretical data with spectra taken from experiments, to which we observe a very good agreement. These theoretical tools may therefore be applied to design new experiments and cutting-edge nanophotonic devices based on graphene plasmonics.

Scattering of surface plasmon-polaritons in a graphene multilayer photonic crystal with inhomogeneous doping

The propagation of a surface plasmon-polariton along a stack of doped graphene sheets is considered. This auxiliary problem is used to discuss: (i) the scattering of such a mode at an interface between the stack and the vacuum; (ii) the scattering at an interface where there is a sudden change of the electronic doping. The formalism is then extended to the {\it barrier problem}. In this system rich physics is found for the plasmonic mode, showing: total reflection, total transmission, Fabry-Pérot oscillations, and coupling to photonic modes.

Renormalization of nanoparticle polarizability in the vicinity of a graphene-covered interface

We study the electromagnetic properties of a metamaterial consisting of polarizable (nano)particles and a single graphene sheet placed at the interface between two dielectrics. We show that the particle's polarizability is renormalized because of the electromagnetic coupling to surface plasmons supported by graphene, which results in a dispersive behavior, different for the polarizability components corresponding to the induced dipole moment, parallel and perpendicular to the graphene sheet. In particular, this effect is predicted to take place for a metallic particle whose bare polarizability in the terahertz (THz) region is practically equal to the cube of its radius (times $4π\varepsilon_0$). This opens the possibility to excite surface plasmons in graphene and enhance its absorption in the THz range by simply using a monolayer of metallic particles randomly deposited on top of it, as we show by explicit calculations.

Optical bistability of graphene in the terahertz range

We use an exact solution of the relaxation-time Boltzmann equation in a uniform AC electric field to describe the nonlinear optical response of graphene in the terahertz (THz). The cases of monolayer, bilayer and ABA-stacked trilayer graphene are considered, and the monolayer species is shown to be the most appropriate one to exploit the nonlinear free electron response. We find that a single layer of monolayer graphene shows an optical bistability in the THz range, within the electromagnetic power range attainable in practice. The current associated with the third harmonic generation is also computed.

Instabilities, solitons, and rogue waves in PT-coupled nonlinear waveguides

We considered the modulational instability of continuous-wave backgrounds, and the related generation and evolution of deterministic rogue waves in the recently introduced parity-time (PT)-symmetric system of linearly-coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which describes a Kerr-nonlinear optical coupler with mutually balanced gain and loss in its cores. Besides the linear coupling, the overlapping cores are coupled through cross-phase-modulation term too. While the rogue waves, built according to the pattern of the Peregrine soliton, are (quite naturally) unstable, we demonstrate that the focusing cross-phase-modulation interaction results in their partial stabilization. For PT-symmetric and antisymmetric bright solitons, the stability region is found too, in an exact analytical form, and verified by means of direct simulations.

Superfluidity breakdown of periodic matter waves in quasi one-dimensional annular traps via resonant scattering with moving defects

We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the quasi-superfluidity properties of periodic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) ring with optical lattices (OL) of different kinds (linear and nonlinear) and with a moving defect of an infinite mass inside. To study the dynamics of the condensate we used a mean-field approximation describing the condensate by use of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the order parameter. We show that the resonant scattering of sound Bloch waves with the defect profoundly affect BEC superfluidity. In particular, a moving defect always leads to the breakdown of superfluidity independently of the value of its velocity. For weak periodic potentials the superfluidity breakdown may occur on a very long time scale (quasisuperfluidity) but the breakdown process can be accelerated by increasing the strength of the OL. Quite remarkably, we find that when the length of the ring is small enough to imply the discreteness of the reciprocal space, it becomes possible to avoid the resonant scattering and to restore quasi-superfluidity.

A Primer on Surface Plasmon-Polaritons in Graphene

We discuss the properties of surface plasmons-polaritons in graphene and describe three possible ways of coupling electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz (THz) spectral range to this type of surface waves. (i) the attenuated total reflection (ATR) method using a prism in the Otto configuration, (ii) graphene micro-ribbon arrays or monolayers with modulated conductivity, (iii) a metal stripe on top of the graphene layer, and (iv) graphene-based gratings. The text provides a number of original results along with their detailed derivation and discussion.

Light scattering by a medium with a spatially modulated optical conductivity: the case of graphene

We describe light scattering from a graphene sheet having a modulated optical conductivity. We show that such modulation enables the excitation of surface plasmon-polaritons by an electromagnetic wave impinging at normal incidence. The resulting surface plasmon-polaritons are responsible for a substantial increase of electromagnetic radiation absorption by the graphene sheet. The origin of the modulation can be due either to a periodic strain field or to adatoms (or absorbed molecules) with a modulated adsorption profile.

Faraday effect in graphene enclosed in an optical cavity and the equation of motion method for the study of magneto-optical transport in solids

We show that by enclosing graphene in an optical cavity, giant Faraday rotations in the infrared regime are generated and measurable Faraday rotation angles in the visible range become possible. Explicit expressions for the Hall steps of the Faraday rotation angle are given for relevant regimes. In the context of this problem we develop an equation of motion (EOM) method for calculation of the magneto-optical properties of metals and semiconductors. It is shown that properly regularized EOM solutions are fully equivalent to the Kubo formula.

Superfluidity of Bose-Einstein condensates in toroidal traps with nonlinear lattices

Superfluid properties of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in toroidal quasi-one-dimensional traps are investigated in the presence of periodic scattering length modulations along the ring. The existence of several types of stable periodic waves, ranging from almost uniform to very fragmented chains of weakly interacting and equally spaced solitons, is demonstrated. We show that these waves may support persistent atomic currents and sound waves with spectra of Bogoliubov type. Fragmented condensates can be viewed as arrays of Josephson junctions and the current as a BEC manifestation of the dc-Josephson effect. The influence of linear defects on BEC superfluidity has been also investigated. We found that for subcritical velocities, linear defects that are static with respect to the lattice (while the condensate moves in respect to both the optical lattice and the defect) preserve the BEC superfluidity.

ATR excitation of surface polaritons at the interface between a metal and a layer of nanocrystal quantum dots

Surface plasmon-polaritons in a multilayer structure consisting of a metallic film and one or more layers of nanocrystal (NC) quantum dots (QDs) are studied. It is shown that there is resonance coupling between the plasmon-polaritons propagating along the metal/NC-layer interface and excitons confined in the dots, which makes a considerable effect on the optical properties of the structure unless the dispersion of the QD size is too large. This coupling can be explored in order to selectively excite QDs of different size by using an attenuated total reflection (ATR) structure. It opens the possibility of control of the relative intensity of light of different color, emitted by the QDs of different size.

Mechanism for graphene-based optoelectronic switches by tuning surface plasmon-polaritons in monolayer graphene

It is shown that one can explore the optical conductivity of graphene, together with the ability of controlling its electronic density by an applied gate voltage, in order to achieve resonant coupling between an external electromagnetic radiation and surface plasmon-polaritons in the graphene layer. This opens the possibility of electrical control of the intensity of light reflected inside a prism placed on top of the graphene layer, by switching between the regimes of total reflection and total absorption. The predicted effect can be used to build graphene-based opto-electronic switches.

Rabi oscillations of matter wave solitons in optical lattices

Inter-band Rabi oscillations of gap soliton matter waves induced by time dependent periodic forces in combined linear and nonlinear optical lattices are for the first time demonstrated. It is shown that under suitable conditions these oscillations can become long-lived. By switching off the external force at proper time it is possible to create either pure (stationary macroscopically populated) gap soliton states or linear combination of two gap solitons with appreciably long life-time.

Nonlinear patterns in Bose-Einstein condensates in dissipative optical lattices

It is shown that the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a dissipative periodic potential, nonlinear losses and linear pump allow for the existence of stable nonlinear Bloch states which are attractors. The model describes a Bose-Einstein condensate with inelastic two- and three-body interactions loaded in an optical lattice with losses due to inelastic interactions of the atoms with photons.
