Optical coherence storage in dark exciton states using spin-dependent three-pulse photon echo

Extension of coherent response time is a desired goal in the field of all-optical information processing implemented in classical and quantum ways. Here we demonstrate how spin-dependent stimulated photon echo can be used to extend decay time of coherent signal from exciton ensemble. We experimentally studied photon echoes from excitons in a model single InGaAs/GaAs quantum well subject to transverse magnetic field. Field-induced quantum beats lead to oscillation of exciton population between bright and long-lived dark excitons. As a result, photon echo decays much longer with decay time attaining dark exciton lifetime in case of non-oscillatory regime.

Spin noise of a halide perovskite

We report on first observation of spin noise in a strongly birefringent semiconductor -- halide perovskite single crystal MAPbI$_3$. The observed spin noise resonance is ascribed to free holes with a record spin dephasing time of 4 ns. The spin dynamics is found to be affected by the residual light absorption of the crystal providing renormalization of the Larmor frequency. Extended spin noise spectroscopy with rotating magnetic field allowed us not only to evaluate the $g$-factor anisotropy, but also to distinguish two different spin subsystems tentatively associated to twinning of the crystal.

Long-living dark coherence brought to light by magnetic-field controlled photon echo

Larmor precession of the quasiparticle spin about a transverse magnetic field leads to the oscillations in the spontaneous photon echo signal due to the shuffling of the optical coherence between optically accessible (bright) and inaccessible (dark) states. Here we report on a new non-oscillating photon echo regime observed in the presence of non-equal dephasing rates of bright and dark states. This regime enables the observation of the long-living dark optical coherence. As a simple mechanical analogy, we suggest a charged particle moving in the magnetic field through the medium with anisotropic viscous friction. We demonstrate the dark coherence retrieval in the spontaneous photon echo from excitons in the InGaAs/GaAs quantum well.

Defect-related states in MAPbI$_3$ halide perovskite single crystals revealed by the photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy

The MAPbI$_3$ halide perovskite single crystals are studied at 5 K temperature using the photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. Two non-interacting types of states are determined: bound excitons and defect-related states. Excitation of the crystal with light energy below the bound exciton resonance reveals the complex low-density defects emission, otherwise hidden by the emission of bound excitons. A way to separate these defect-related luminescence spectra is proposed, and the thorough study of this emission regime is carried out. The results of this study opens an area of low-density defects and dopants exploration in halide perovskite semiconductors.

Amplified Spontaneous Emission and Random Lasing in MAPbBr$_3$ Halide Perovskite Single Crystals

Halide perovskites are a promising optical gain media with high tunability and simple solution synthesis. In this study, two gain regimes, namely amplified spontaneous emission and random lasing, are demonstrated in same MAPbBr$_3$ halide perovskite single crystal. For this, photoluminescence is measured at a temperature of 4 K with pulsed femtosecond pumping by UV light with a 80 MHz repetition rate. Random lasing is observed in areas of the sample where a random resonator was formed due to cracks and crystal imperfections. In more homogeneous regions of the sample, the dominant regime is amplified spontaneous emission. These two regimes are reliably distinguished by the line width, the mode structure, the growth of the intensity after the threshold, and the degree of polarization of the radiation. The spectral localization of the stimulated emission well below the bound exciton resonance raises a question concerning the origin of the emission in halide perovskite lasers.

Modelling and optimization of the excitonic diffraction grating

Periodical spatial modulation of the excitonic resonance in a quantum well could lead to the formation of a new highly directional and resonant coherent optical response -- resonant diffraction. Such excitonic diffraction gratings were demonstrated in epitaxially grown quantum wells patterned by the low-dose ion beam irradiation before or after the growth. In this paper we present a theoretical model of the resonant diffraction formation based on the step-by-step approximation of the Maxwell equation solution. The resulting theory allows us to reliably describe experimental data, as well as to predict the way to increase the diffraction efficiency.

Coherent dynamics of localized excitons and trions in ZnO/(Zn,Mg)O quantum wells studied by photon echoes

We study optically the coherent evolution of trions and excitons in a $δ$-doped 3.5 nm-thick ZnO/Zn$_{0.91}$Mg$_{0.09}$O multiple quantum well by means of time-resolved four-wave mixing at temperature of 1.5~K. Employing spectrally narrow picosecond laser pulses in the $χ^{(3)}$ regime allows us to address differently localized trion and exciton states, thereby avoiding many-body interactions and excitation-induced dephasing. The signal in the form of photon echoes from the negatively charged A excitons (T$_\text{A}$, trions) decays with coherence times varying from 8 up to 60~ps, depending on the trion energy: more strongly localized trions reveal longer coherence dynamics. The localized neutral excitons decay on the picosecond timescale with coherence times up to $T_2=4.5$~ps. The coherent dynamics of the X$_\text{B}$ exciton and T$_\text{B}$ trion are very short ($T_2<1$~ps), which is attributed to the fast energy relaxation from the trion and exciton B states to the respective A states. The trion population dynamics is characterized by the decay time $T_1$, rising from 30~ps to 100~ps with decreasing trion energy.

Microstructural analysis and optical properties of Cs2BiAgBr6 halide double perovskite single crystals

Single crystals of Cs2BiAgBr6 lead-free perovskite were grown by crystallization from supersaturated solution. According to characterization by XRD and EBSD methods the double perovskite single crystal are of the cubic Fm-3m symmetry with the lattice constant a = 11.20 Å. DFT predictions based on the single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveal that the material is an indirect band gap semiconductor. Low temperature (1.4 K) photoluminescence spectra demonstrate three broadened bands that correspond to two lowest computed indirect and one direct band-to-band transitions.

Low inhomogeneous broadening of excitonic resonance in MAPbBr3 single crystals

We present optical study of MAPbBr3 single crystals grown from solution by inverse temperature crystallization method. Photoluminescence temperature dependence of narrow and isolated exciton resonance showed encouragingly low inhomogeneous broadening Γ ~ 0.5 meV, which is comparable to those of MBE-grown III-V heterostructures, indicating high quality of the solution-grown perovskite. Excitonic origin of the resonance was proved by its superlinear pump intensity dependence in contrast to the linear behavior of the defect-assisted recombination bands. In addition, for the first time phonon replicas were resolved in MAPbBr3 photoluminescence spectra and attributed to the known lattice vibrational modes by comparison with Raman scattering spectra.

Photon echoes from (In,Ga)As quantum dots embedded in a Tamm-plasmon microcavity

We report on the coherent optical response from an ensemble of (In,Ga)As quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a planar Tamm-plasmon microcavity with a quality factor of approx. 100. Significant enhancement of the light-matter interaction is demonstrated under selective laser excitation of those quantum dots which are in resonance with the cavity mode. The enhancement is manifested through Rabi oscillations of the photon echo, demonstrating coherent control of excitons with picosecond pulses at intensity levels more than an order of magnitude smaller as compared with bare quantum dots. The decay of the photon echo transients is weakly changed by the resonator indicating a small decrease of the coherence time $T_2$ which we attribute to the interaction with the electron plasma in the metal layer located close (40nm) to the QD layer. Simultaneously we see a reduction of the population lifetime $T_1$, inferred from the stimulated photon echo, due to an enhancement of the spontaneous emission by a factor of 2, which is attributed to the Purcell effect, while non-radiative processes are negligible as confirmed from time-resolved photoluminescence.

Photon echo transients from an inhomogeneous ensemble of semiconductor quantum dots

An ensemble of quantum dot excitons may be used for coherent information manipulation. Due to the ensemble inhomogeneity any optical information retrieval occurs in form of a photon echo. We show that the inhomogeneity can lead to a significant deviation from the conventional echo timing sequence. Variation of the area of the initial rotation pulse, which generates excitons in a dot sub-ensemble only, reveals this complex picture of photon echo formation. We observe a retarded echo for π/2 pulses, while for 3π/2 the echo is advanced in time as evidenced through monitoring the Rabi oscillations in the time-resolved photon echo amplitude from (In,Ga)As/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot structures and confirmed by detailed calculations.

Effect of irradiation by He+ and Ga+ ions on 2D-exciton susceptibility of the InGaAs/GaAs quantum-well structures

The effect of irradiation by 30-keV Ga+ and 35-keV He+ ions (in relatively small doses) on the excitonic reflectivity spectra of single InGaAs/GaAs quantum-well structures is studied. It is found that the irradiation results in decreasing intensity and broadening of the excitonic resonances in the reflectivity spectra for all the doses. It is shown that these changes are not related to a decrease of the exciton transition oscillator strength and, therefore, to the irradiation-induced destruction of the excitonic states, but can be rather ascribed to a common cause, namely, to inhomogeneous broadening of the excitonic resonances proportional to the exposure dose.A tentative model of the irradiation-induced broadening is considered, with the mechanism of the process being a consequence of scat-tering of the 2D excitons by structural defects associated with Ga(In) and As vacancies arising upon collisions of the high-energy ions with regular atoms of the crystal structure. The model is used to compare experimental dependence of efficiency of the Ga+-ion-induced broad-ening on distance of the quantum well from the irradiated surface with a similar dependence calculated using the Monte-Carlo technique. A discrepancy between the results of simulation and experimental data is discussed.

Anti-mirror reflection of a bounded plane optical waveguide: string model

The effect of anti-mirror reflection from a bounded plane optical waveguide used earlier for observation of slow light in a Bragg waveguide is considered. A theory of the effect is proposed that allowed us to interpret the observed spectral (Gaussian lineshape) and angular (Lorentzian angular profile) properties of the light scattered by the bounded waveguide in the anti-specular direction.

Bragg Reflection Waveguide: Anti-Mirror Reflection and Light Slowdown

The effect of the light group velocity reduction in dielectric Bragg reflection waveguide structures (SiO$_2$/TiO$_2$) in the vicinity of the cutoff frequency is studied experimentally. The effect of anti-mirror reflection, specific for the Bragg reflection waveguides, is described and employed for detection of "slow light". The experiments were performed with the use of the Ti:sapphire laser pulses ~ 100 fs in length. The group index $n_g \sim$ 30 with a fractional pulse delay (normalized to the pulse width) of $\sim$ 10 is demonstrated. The problems and prospects of implementation of the slow-light devices based on the Bragg reflection waveguide structures are discussed.
