Coherent control of a single electron spin with electric fields

Manipulation of single spins is essential for spin-based quantum information processing. Electrical control instead of magnetic control is particularly appealing for this purpose, since electric fields are easy to generate locally on-chip. We experimentally realize coherent control of a single electron spin in a quantum dot using an oscillating electric field generated by a local gate. The electric field induces coherent transitions (Rabi oscillations) between spin-up and spin-down with pi/2 rotations as fast as ~55ns. Our analysis indicates that the electrically-induced spin transitions are mediated by the spin-orbit interaction. Taken together with the recently demonstrated coherent exchange of two neighboring spins, our results demonstrate the feasibility of fully electrical manipulation of spin qubits.

Fully developed triplet proximity effect

We present a model for fully developed triplet proximity effect in superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures. Within the circuit-theory approximation, we evaluate the Green's functions, the density of states, and the Josephson current that depend essentially on the magnetization configuration.

Overscreening Diamagnetism in Cylindrical Superconductor-Normal Metal-Heterostructures

We study the linear diamagnetic response of a superconducting cylinder coated by a normal-metal layer due to the proximity effect using the clean limit quasiclassical Eilenberger equations. We compare the results for the susceptibility with those for a planar geometry. Interestingly, for $R\sim d$ the cylinder exhibits a stronger overscreening of the magnetic field, i.e., at the interface to the superconductor it can be less than (-1/2) of the applied field. Even for $R\gg d$, the diamagnetism can be increased as compared to the planar case, viz. the magnetic susceptibility $4πχ$ becomes smaller than -3/4. This behaviour can be explained by an intriguing spatial oscillation of the magnetic field in the normal layer.

Nuclear spin effect in metallic spin valve

We study electronic transport through a ferromagnet normal-metal ferromagnet system and we investigate the effect of hyperfine interaction between electrons and nuclei in the normal-metal part. A switching of the magnetization directions of the ferromagnets causes nuclear spins to precess. We show that the effect of this precession on the current through the system is large enough to be observed in experiment.

$G_Q$-corrections in Circuit Theory of Quantum Transport

We develop a finite-element technique that allows one to evaluate correction of the order of $G_Q$ to various transport characteristics of arbitrary nanostructures. Common examples of such corrections are weak localization effect on conductance and universal conductance fluctuations. Our approach, however, is not restricted to conductance only. It allows in the same manner to evaluate corrections to noise characteristics, superconducting properties, strongly non-equilibrium transport and transmission distribution. To enable such functionality, we consider Green functions of arbitrary matrix structure. We derive a finite-element technique from Cooperon and Diffuson ladders for these Green's functions. The derivation is supplemented with application examples. Those include transitions between ensembles and Aharonov-Bohm effect.

Strong feedback and current noise in nanoelectromechanical systems

We demonstrate the feasibility of a strong feedback regime for a single-electron tunneling device weakly coupled to an underdamped single-mode oscillator. In this regime, mechanical oscillations are generated and the current is strongly modified whereas the current noise is parametrically big with respect to the Poisson value. This regime requires energy dependence of the tunnel amplitudes. For sufficiently fast tunnel rates the mechanical contribution to current noise can exceed the Poisson value even beyond the strong feedback regime.

Quantum phase slip junctions

In this paper we demonstrate that, if it exists, coherent quantum phase slip is the exact dual to Josephson tunneling. We use the duality to predict kinetic capacitance and a sharp resonance in narrow wires. Biased resistively and driven at high frequency, quantum phase slip junctions should exhibit current plateaus of interest for a fundamental standard.

Inelastic Interaction Corrections and Universal Relations for Full Counting Statistics

We analyze in detail the interaction correction to Full Counting Statistics (FCS) of electron transfer in a quantum contact originating from the electromagnetic environment surrounding the contact. The correction can be presented as a sum of two terms, corresponding to elastic/inelastic electron transfer. Here we primarily focus on the inelastic correction. For our analysis, it is important to understand more general -- universal -- relations imposed on FCS only by quantum mechanics and statistics with no regard for a concrete realization of a contact. So we derive and analyze these relations. We reveal that for FCS the universal relations can be presented in a form of detailed balance. We also present several useful formulas for the cumulants. To facilitate the experimental observation of the effect, we evaluate cumulants of FCS at finite voltage and temperature. Several analytical results obtained are supplemented by numerical calculations for the first three cumulants at various transmission eigenvalues.

Quantum Tunneling Detection of Two-photon and Two-electron Processes

We analyze the operation of a quantum tunneling detector coupled to a coherent conductor. We demonstrate that in a certain energy range the output of the detector is determined by two-photon processes, two-electron processes and the interference of the two. We show how the individual contributions of these processes can be resolved in experiments.

Proximity effect gaps in S/N/FI structures

We study the proximity effect in hybrid structures consisting of superconductor and ferromagnetic insulator separated by a normal diffusive metal (S/N/FI structures). These stuctures were proposed to realize the absolute spin-valve effect. We pay special attention to the gaps in the density of states of the normal part. We show that the effect of the ferromagnet is twofold: It not only shifts the density of states but also provides suppression of the gap. The mechanism of this suppression is remarkably similar to that due to magnetic impurities. Our results are obtained from the solution of one-dimensional Usadel equation supplemented with boundary conditions for matrix current at both interfaces.

Single-electron Tunneling with Strong Mechanical Feedback

We show that there is a regime of strong feedback for a nanomechanical oscillatory mode weakly coupled to a single-electron tunneling device. In this regime, the current is strongly modified whereas the current noise is parametrically big exceeding the Schottky limit by orders of magnitude. This regime requires a high quality factor of nanomechanical oscillations.

Josephson junctions as threshold detectors for full counting statistics

We discuss how threshold detectors can be used for a direct measurement of the full counting statistics (FCS) of current fluctuations and how to implement Jose phson junctions in this respect. We propose a scheme to characterize the full co unting statistics from the current dependence of the escape rate measured. We il lustrate the scheme with explicit results for tunnel, diffusive and quasi-ballis tic mesoscopic conductors.

Theory of charge transport in diffusive normal metal / unconventional singlet superconductor contacts

We analyze the transport properties of contacts between unconventional superconductor and normal diffusive metal in the framework of the extended circuit theory. We obtain a general boundary condition for the Keldysh-Nambu Green's functions at the interface that is valid for arbitrary transparencies of the interface. This allows us to investigate the voltage-dependent conductance (conductance spectrum) of a diffusive normal metal (DN)/ unconventional singlet superconductor junction in both ballistic and diffusive cases. For d-wave superconductor, we calculate conductance spectra numerically for different orientations of the junctions, resistances, Thouless energies in DN, and transparencies of the interface. We demonstrate that conductance spectra exhibit a variety of features including a $V$-shaped gap-like structure, zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and zero bias conductance dip (ZBCD). We show that two distinct mechanisms: (i) coherent Andreev reflection (CAR) in DN and (ii) formation of midgap Andreev bound state (MABS) at the interface of d-wave superconductors, are responsible for ZBCP, their relative importance being dependent on the angle $α$ between the interface normal and the crystal axis of d-wave superconductors. For $α=0$, the ZBCP is due to CAR in the junctions of low transparency with small Thouless energies, this is similar to the case of diffusive normal metal / insulator /s-wave superconductor junctions. With increase of $α$ from zero to $π/4$, the MABS contribution to ZBCP becomes more prominent and the effect of CAR is gradually suppressed. Such complex spectral features shall be observable in conductance spectra of realistic high-$T_c$ junctions at very low temperature.

Statistics of Transmission Eigenvalues for a Disordered Quantum Point Contact

We study the distribution of transmission eigenvalues of a quantum point contact with nearby impurities. In the semi-classical case (the chemical potential lies at the conductance plateau) we find that the transmission properties of this system are obtained from the ensemble of Gaussian random reflection matrices. The distribution only depends on the number of open transport channels and the average reflection eigenvalue and crosses over from the Poissonian for one open channel to the form predicted by the circuit theory in the limit of large number of open channels.

Andreev reflection eigenvalue density in mesoscopic conductors

The energy-dependent Andreev reflection eigenvalues determine the transport properties of normal-superconducting systems. We evaluate the eigenvalue density to get an insight into formation of resonant electron-hole transport channels. The circuit-theory-like method developed can be applied to any generic mesoscopic conductor or combinations thereof. We present the results for experimentally relevant cases of a diffusive wire and a double tunnel junction.

Feedback of the electromagnetic environment on current and voltage fluctuations out of equilibrium

A theory is presented for low-frequency current and voltage correlators of a mesoscopic conductor embedded in a macroscopic electromagnetic environment. This Keldysh field theory evaluated at its saddle-point provides the microscopic justification for our earlier phenomenological calculation (using the cascaded Langevin approach). The nonlinear feedback from the environment mixes correlators of different orders, which explains the unexpected temperature dependence of the third moment of tunneling noise observed in a recent experiment. At non-zero temperature, current and voltage correlators of order three and higher are no longer linearly related. We show that a Hall bar measures voltage correlators in the longitudinal voltage and current correlators in the Hall voltage. We go beyond the saddle-point approximation to consider the environmental Coulomb blockade. We derive that the leading order Coulomb blockade correction to the n-th cumulant of current fluctuations is proportional to the voltage derivative of the (n+1)-th cumulant, generalizing to any n the earlier results for n=1,2.

Full Current Statistics in the Regime of Weak Coulomb Interaction

We evaluate the full statistics of the current via a Coulomb island that is strongly coupled to the leads. This strong coupling weakens Coulomb interaction. We show that in this case the effects of the interaction can be incorporated into the renormalization of transmission eigenvalues of the scatterers that connect the island and the leads. We evaluate the Coulomb blockade gap in the current-voltage characteristics, the value of the gap being exponentially suppressed as compared to the classical charging energy of the island.
