FSS-Net: Frequency-Spatial Synergy Network with Wavelet Attention for Carotid Artery Ultrasound Segmentation

Accurate segmentation of carotid arteries in ultrasound imaging is critical for stroke risk assessment. However, speckle noise, low contrast, and blurred boundaries remain major challenges. In this paper, we propose a Frequency-Spatial Synergy Network (FSS-Net) to achieve noise-robust and high-precision carotid artery segmentation. The network integrates wavelet transform, multi-domain attention, and edge enhancement into a unified encoder-decoder architecture. Specifically, a Channel-Spatial-Wavelet Attention (CSWA) module is designed to suppress noise and purify semantic features in the frequency domain. A Wavelet-Enhanced Bottleneck (WEB) module is introduced to capture long-range global dependencies efficiently. Furthermore, a Laplacian-Guided Adaptive Edge Fusion (LAEF) module compensates high-frequency details and maintains boundary continuity. Extensive experiments on carotid ultrasound datasets show that FSS-Net achieves a Dice score (DSC) of 96.46% and strong robustness under low SNR conditions, outperforming several state-of-the-art methods. This method realizes accurate segmentation of carotid artery in ultrasonic imaging, effectively identifies carotid atherosclerotic plaque, and is verified by other task (such as segmentation of breast cancer), suggesting that it has good clinical application potential in identifying abnormal tissue masses in ultrasonic images.

Context-Aware Deep Learning for Defect Classification in Atomic-Resolution STEM

Artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing materials characterization, yet most applications in electron microscopy rely solely on image contrast, overlooking the chemical and experimental context that shapes image formation. This limitation makes defect classification inherently ambiguous, as similar contrasts can arise from different materials or imaging conditions. Here we develop a context-aware learning framework that integrates image-derived contrast with metadata describing composition, beam energy, and detector geometry. Using a systematically constructed dataset of ~55 million simulated patches spanning 576 cases across 96 doped monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides, we show that conditioning on contextual variables transforms defect classification from an ill-posed image-only task into a well-posed, physically grounded problem. The framework achieves over 98% accuracy on simulations and near-human agreement on experimental data, with a 94% reduction in posterior entropy. By emphasizing contextual grounding over architectural complexity, this approach links experimental image contrast to the underlying chemical and imaging conditions, supporting physically grounded defect assignments and a general pathway toward multimodal AI models for autonomous materials characterization.

Robust Secure Beamforming for Movable Antenna Enhanced Integrated Sensing and Communications

In this letter, we investigate robust beamforming design for a movable antenna (MA)-enhanced secure integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system with imperfect eaves?dropping channel state information (CSI). To improve radar sensing performance, we formulate a radar signal-to-interference?plus-noise ratio (SINR) maximization problem by jointly opti?mizing the transmit beamforming and antenna placement while ensuring communication data security. However, the resulting op?timization problem is inherently intractable due to the nonlinea mapping from antenna positions to channel coefficients, as well as the eavesdropper (Eve) channel uncertainty. To handle these challenges, we propose a block coordinate descent (BCD)-based algorithm incorporating successive convex approximation (SCA) and fractional programming (FP) techniques. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm exhibits fast convergence and achieves a significant improvement in the radar SINR while guaranteeing communication security.

Ferroelectric brightening of spin forbidden dark excitons in a WSe2/hybrid perovskite heterostructure

Long-lived dark excitons in monolayer WSe2 present promising candidates for carrying spin and valley information, but their optical access and spin manipulation have conventionally required the use of strong external magnetic fields. Here, using a ferroelectric hybrid perovskite heterostructure, we leverage the ferroelectric proximity effect to break the WSe2's in-plane rotational symmetry and brighten the spin-forbidden dark excitons under zero magnetic field conditions. Furthermore, we show that the twist angle between the WSe2 and perovskite crystals controls the ferroelectric coupling strength and valley-contrasting polarization. Our proposed mechanism, supported by a four-band tight-binding model, suggests that the ferroelectric proximity effect induces an asymmetric intersublattice interaction, generating an effective in-plane spin-orbit coupling (SOC) field that rotates spin/valley polarization and brightens dark excitons. Our work establishes ferroelectric proximity coupling as an electrically reconfigurable, magnetic-field-free strategy for spin exciton control in two-dimensional semiconductors.

An Immersed $C^0$ Interior Penalty Method for Biharmonic Interface Problems

In this paper, we introduce an immersed $C^0$ interior penalty method for solving two-dimensional biharmonic interface problems on unfitted meshes. To accommodate the biharmonic interface conditions, high-order immersed finite element (IFE) spaces are constructed in the least-squares sense. We establish key properties of these spaces including unisolvency and partition of unity are, and verify their optimal approximation capability. These spaces are further incorporated into a modified $C^0$ interior penalty scheme with additional penalty terms on interface segments. The well-posedness of the discrete solution is proved. Numerical experiments with various interface geometries confirm optimal convergence of the proposed method in $L^2$, $H^1$ and $H^2$ norms.

Lagged sea-surface-temperature precursors of the leading PM2.5 mode in China

Fine particulate matter(PM2.5) pollution in China is strongly modulated bymeteorological variability, yet its seasonal predictability from oceanic signals remains unclear. Here we identify the leading PM2.5 variability mode over China and show that it is preceded by coherent sea-surface-temperature anomaly clusters by more than one season. These oceanic precursors influence summer PM2.5 mainly by altering precipitation and lowlevel ventilation, and winter PM2.5 by modulating boundary-layer height and near-surface stagnation. Using the four largest precursor regions, a simple regression model achieves significant independent prediction skill for both summer and winter PM2.5 variability. Our results reveal a physical pathway linking sea-surface-temperature memory to regional aerosol pollution and provide a basis for seasonal air-quality risk assessment.

Exploring the AI Obedience: Why is Generating a Pure Color Image Harder than CyberPunk?

Recent advances in generative AI have shown human-level performance in complex content creation. However, we identify a "Paradox of Simplicity": models that can render complex scenes often fail at trivial, low-entropy tasks, such as generating a uniform pure color image. We argue this is a systemic failure related to uncontrollable emergent abilities. As models scale, strong priors for aesthetics and complexity override deterministic simplicity, creating an "aesthetic bias" that hinders the model's transition from data simulation to true intellectual abstraction. To better investigate this problem, we formalize the concept of AI Obedience, a hierarchical framework that grades a model's ability to transition from probabilistic approximation to pixel-level determinism (Levels 1 to 5). We introduce Violin, the first systematic benchmark designed to evaluate Level 4 Obedience through three deterministic tasks: color purity, image masking, and geometric shape generation. Using Violin, we evaluate several state-of-the-art models and reveal that closed-source models generally outperform open-source ones in deterministic precision. Interestingly, performance on our benchmark correlates with the benchmark in natural image generation. Our work provides a foundational framework and tools for achieving better alignment between human instructions and model outputs.

Breaking mechanical dark mode via the Coulomb interaction

We propose a method to break the dark mode of two degenerate mechanical resonators (MRs) in optomechanical systems via the Coulomb interaction. Two degenerate MRs can be cooled to their ground-state simultaneously beyond the resolved sideband regime using the Coulomb interaction and an optical parametric amplifier (OPA). We show that strong and robust mechanical squeezing beyond 3 dB can be generated using the OPA and mechanical parametric amplification (MPA) introduced by the Coulomb interaction. Our results manifests that robust bipartite and genuine tripartite entanglement can be produced in a degenerate optomechanical system.

Spreadsheet Modeling Experiments Using GPTs on Small Problem Statements and the Wall Task

This paper investigates how GPT-based tools can assist in building reusable analytical spreadsheet models. After a screening, we evaluate five GPT extensions and select Excel AI by pulsrai.com for detailed testing. Through structured experiments on simple problem statements, we assess Excel AI's performance against the ERFR criteria (each input in a cell; cell formulas; no hardwired numbers; labels; accurate). Results show that while Excel AI can produce well-structured models, it is inconsistent and often non-reproducible. We identify two central challenges - "the problem of confidence" and "the problem of workflow" - which highlight the need for skilled users to verify and adapt GPT-generated spreadsheets. Though GPTs show promise for generating draft models that may reduce development time or lower skill requirements, current tools remain unreliable for professional use. We conclude with recommendations for future research into prompt engineering, reproducibility, and larger-scale modeling tasks.

JOYS: Launching and destruction of dust in protostellar jets. The case of BHR71-IRS1 with JWST/MIRI

Protostellar winds can theoretically lift solids from the planet-forming disks, but direct evidence for launched dust has been scarce so far. Numerous atomic lines that are unique to mid-infrared (IR) wavelengths reveal refractories eroded from dust grains and provide information on wind properties in the earliest stages of the star formation process. We present JWST/MIRI-MRS spectral imaging of the inner 2000 au of the BHR71-IRS1 blueshifted side of the outflow. Atomic line intensities are compared to shock models to constrain the physical conditions and elemental abundances of the outflowing gas. Dust continuum maps are constructed from PSF-subtracted cubes, and the dust spectral energy distribution is analyzed. The ionized central jet of BHR71-IRS1 is spatially resolved and imaged for the first time, revealing a unique inventory of refractory, volatile, and noble-gas fine-structure lines (Fe, Ni, Co, Cl, S, Ne, Ar). The emission is concentrated along four bright knots that wiggle along the jet axis. PSF-subtracted continuum maps reveal extended mid-IR continuum emission co-spatial with the jet bullets and within the H$_2$-traced outflow cone. Spectral energy distributions along the jet are fit together with the extinction, revealing a warm (200-400 K) and a cold (70-90 K) dust component. Shock modeling constrained by the mid-IR lines indicates a decline in shock velocity from 70 to 35 km s$^{-1}$ and pre-shock density from $>$10$^5$ to $ 4\times 10^4$ cm$^{-3}$ with distance from the protostar. Gas-phase Fe and Ni are measurably depleted relative to Solar abundances, consistent with a substantial fraction of refractories remaining locked in grains in spite of the shocks. These JWST observations provide direct evidence that dust is launched in a Class 0 jet and at least partly survives shock processing.

High-speed hyperspectral 3D ghost imaging LiDAR

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is widely used in autonomous systems and industrial metrology; however, the simultaneous acquisition of three-dimensional (3D) structure and broadband spectral information remains challenging, as conventional hyperspectral LiDAR relies on wavelength-scanning or spectrometer-based detection that limits speed. Here, we demonstrate a hyperspectral 3D ghost imaging LiDAR that eliminates these bottlenecks. By combining a stochastic broadband laser with single-pixel detection, and integrating spatiotemporal encoding with spectral ghost imaging in a time-of-flight framework, the system enables pulse-resolved recovery of spatial and spectral information. Consequently, we achieve a line-scanning rate of 60.5 MHz (point rate 1.8 GHz) and a ranging precision of 0.02 mm within a 10 μs integration time. Each voxel contains a 1.4 nm resolution spectrum over 1100-1250 nm, enabling simultaneous 3D imaging and chemical identification. This approach provides a route to high-speed hyperspectral LiDAR for environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, and industrial inspection.

Spin State versus Potential of Zero Charge as Predictors of Density-Dependent Oxygen Reduction in M-N-C Electrocatalysts

Metal-site density strongly influences oxygen reduction activity and selectivity in M-N-C electrocatalysts, but the descriptors that predict these trends remain under debate. Here, we compare spin state and the potential of zero charge as predictors of density-dependent oxygen reduction behavior in Fe-N-C and Co-N-C catalysts. Using constrained-magnetization calculations combined with Landau analysis, we find that the ground-state magnetic moments vary only weakly across a broad range of metal-site densities, suggesting that magnetic descriptors alone cannot account for the pronounced performance changes. In contrast, explicit-solvent simulations reveal systematic density-dependent shifts in PZC, which alter the interfacial electric field and thereby modulate field-sensitive adsorption energetics of ORR intermediates. Incorporating these PZC shifts into a pH-field-coupled microkinetic model captures the density-dependent activity trends and reproduces the experimentally observed increase in two-electron selectivity at lower site densities under acidic conditions. Experimental PZC measurements further support the predicted trend. Together, these results show that PZC is a more effective predictor than spin state for density-dependent oxygen reduction activity and selectivity in M-N-C electrocatalysts.

Zero-Freeness of the Hard-Core Model with Bounded Connective Constant

We study the zero-free regions of the partition function of the hard-core model on finite graphs and their implications for the analyticity of the free energy on infinite lattices. Classically, zero-freeness results have been established up to the tree uniqueness threshold $λ_c(Δ-1)$ determined by the maximum degree $Δ$. However, for many graph classes, such as regular lattices, the connective constant $σ$ provides a more precise measure of structural complexity than the maximum degree. While recent approximation algorithms based on correlation decay and Markov chain Monte Carlo have successfully exploited the connective constant to improve the threshold to $λ_c(σ)$, analogous results for complex zero-freeness have been lacking. In this paper, we bridge this gap by introducing a proper definition of the connective constant for finite graphs based on a lower bound on the number of $k$-depth self-avoiding walks. We prove that for any graph family with a lower connective constant $μ$, the partition function is zero-free in a complex neighborhood of the interval $[0, λ]$ for all $λ< λ_c(μ)$. As a direct consequence, we establish the uniqueness and analyticity of the free energy density for infinite lattices up to the connective constant threshold, extending the known regions derived from maximum degree bounds. Our proof utilizes a block contraction technique that lifts the correlation decay property from a real interval to a strip-like complex neighborhood.

Disentangling to Re-couple: Resolving the Similarity-Controllability Paradox in Subject-Driven Text-to-Image Generation

Subject-Driven Text-to-Image (T2I) Generation aims to preserve a subject's identity while editing its context based on a text prompt. A core challenge in this task is the "similarity-controllability paradox", where enhancing textual control often degrades the subject's fidelity, and vice-versa. We argue this paradox stems from the ambiguous role of text prompts, which are often tasked with describing both the subject and the desired modifications, leading to conflicting signals for the model. To resolve this, we propose DisCo, a novel framework that first Disntangles and then re-Couples visual and textual information. First, our textual-visual decoupling module isolates the sources of information: subject identity is extracted exclusively from the reference image with the entity word of the subject, while the text prompt is simplified to contain only the modification command, where the subject refers to general pronouns, eliminating descriptive ambiguity. However, this strict separation can lead to unnatural compositions between the subject and its contexts. We address this by designing a dedicated reward signal and using reinforcement learning to seamlessly recouple the visually-defined subject and the textually-generated context. Our approach effectively resolves the paradox, enabling simultaneous high-fidelity subject preservation and precise textual control. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance, producing highly realistic and coherent images.

Locally Interpretable Individualized Treatment Rules for Black-Box Decision Models

Individualized treatment rules (ITRs) aim to optimize healthcare by tailoring treatment decisions to patient-specific characteristics. Existing methods typically rely on either interpretable but inflexible models or highly flexible black-box approaches that sacrifice interpretability; moreover, most impose a single global decision rule across patients. We introduce the Locally Interpretable Individualized Treatment Rule (LI-ITR) method, which combines flexible machine learning models to accurately learn complex treatment outcomes with locally interpretable approximations to construct subject-specific treatment rules. LI-ITR employs variational autoencoders to generate realistic local synthetic samples and learns individualized decision rules through a mixture of interpretable experts. Simulation studies show that LI-ITR accurately recovers true subject-specific local coefficients and optimal treatment strategies. An application to precision side-effect management in breast cancer illustrates the necessity of flexible predictive modeling and highlights the practical utility of LI-ITR in estimating optimal treatment rules while providing transparent, clinically interpretable explanations.

Broadband terahertz comb with sub-Hz comb linewidth

Terahertz (THz) frequency combs are increasingly essential for spectroscopy, metrology, and quantum science. However, generating a dense array of evenly spaced ultra-narrow THz comb lines is challenging. Here, we demonstrate broadband THz comb generation using a photoconductive antenna that transfers a noise-suppressed near-infrared electro-optical (EO) comb into the THz domain. Our noise-suppression strategy, leveraging soliton self-frequency shift and spectral filtering, effectively suppresses EO comb phase noise without requiring active stabilization. The resulting THz comb exhibits broad spectral coverage (0.05-4 THz), narrow comb linewidths (0.3 Hz at the Fourier-transform limit), and excellent frequency stability (8.6*10^-14 at 1-second integration). We further demonstrate asynchronous THz time-domain spectroscopy, resolving ~36,000 comb lines with 50 MHz spacing. Crucially, the inherent frequency agility of the EO comb enables rapid and wide-range tuning of the THz comb line spacing. These attributes position our THz comb as a versatile tool for high-resolution molecular spectroscopy and precision THz metrology.

A scalable near-visible integrated photon-pair source for satellite quantum science

Quantum state distribution over vast distances is essential for global-scale quantum networks and fundamental test of quantum physics at space scale. While satellite platforms have demonstrated thousand-kilometer entanglement distribution, quantum key distribution and quantum teleportation with ground, future constellations and deep-space missions demand photon sources that are robust, compact, and power-efficient. Integrated photonics offers a scalable solution, yet a critical spectral gap persists. Although telecom-band integrated photon-pair sources are well established, near-visible photons offer distinct advantages for satellite-to-ground links by mitigating diffraction loss and maximizing the collection efficiency of optical telescopes. Scalable integrated sources in this regime have remained elusive due to the fundamental challenge of achieving anomalous dispersion in materials transparent at visible wavelengths. Here we bridge this gap by demonstrating an integrated near-visible photon-pair source based on a wide-bandgap, ultralow-loss, silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) microresonator. By engineering the dispersion of higher-order waveguide modes, we overcome the intrinsic normal dispersion limit to achieve efficient phase matching. The device exhibits a spectral brightness of 4.87$\times$10$^7$ pairs/s/mW$^2$/GHz and a narrow photon linewidth of 357 MHz. We report high-purity heralded single-photon generation with a heralding rate up to 2.3 MHz and a second-order correlation function as low as 0.0041. Furthermore, we observe energy-time entanglement with 98.4% interference visibility, violating the CHSH limit even at flux exceeding 40.6 million pairs/s. Combined with the proven radiation hardness of Si$_3$N$_4$, this source constitutes a flight-ready hardware foundation for daylight quantum communications and protocols requiring on-orbit multiphoton interference.

IPCV: Information-Preserving Compression for MLLM Visual Encoders

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) deliver strong vision-language performance but at high computational cost, driven by numerous visual tokens processed by the Vision Transformer (ViT) encoder. Existing token pruning strategies are inadequate: LLM-stage token pruning overlooks the ViT's overhead, while conventional ViT token pruning, without language guidance, risks discarding textually critical visual cues and introduces feature distortions amplified by the ViT's bidirectional attention. To meet these challenges, we propose IPCV, a training-free, information-preserving compression framework for MLLM visual encoders. IPCV enables aggressive token pruning inside the ViT via Neighbor-Guided Reconstruction (NGR) that temporarily reconstructs pruned tokens to participate in attention with minimal overhead, then fully restores them before passing to the LLM. Besides, we introduce Attention Stabilization (AS) to further alleviate the negative influence from token pruning by approximating the K/V of pruned tokens. It can be directly applied to previous LLM-side token pruning methods to enhance their performance. Extensive experiments show that IPCV substantially reduces end-to-end computation and outperforms state-of-the-art training-free token compression methods across diverse image and video benchmarks. Our code is available at https://github.com/Perkzi/IPCV.
