Shadow cast by a rotating and nonlinear magnetic-charged black hole in perfect fluid dark matter

We derived an exact solution of the spherically symmetric Hayward black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). By applying the Newman-Janis algorithm, we generalized it to the corresponding rotating black hole. Then, we studied the shadows of rotating Hayward black hole in PFDM. The apparent shape of the shadow depends upon the black hole spin $a$, the magnetic charge $Q$ and the PFDM intensity parameter $k$ ($k<0$). The shadow is a perfect circle in the non-rotating case ($a=0$) and a deformed one in the rotating case ($a\neq{0}$). For a fixed value of $a$, the size of the shadow increases with the increasing $\vert{k}\vert$, but decreases with the increasing $Q$. We further investigated the black hole emission rate. We found that the emission rate decreases with the increasing $\vert{k}\vert$ (or $Q$) and the peak of the emission shifts to lower frequency. Finally, we discussed the observational prospects corresponding to the supermassive black hole $\mathrm{Sgr\ A^{*}}$ at the center of the Milky Way.

Isochronous Data Link Across a Superconducting Nb Flex Cable with 5 femtojoules per Bit

Interconnect properties position superconducting digital circuits to build large, high performance, power efficient digital systems. We report a board-to-board communication data link, which is a critical technological component that has not yet been addressed. Synchronous communication on chip and between chips mounted on a common board is enabled by the superconducting resonant clock/power network for RQL circuits. The data link is extended to board-to-board communication using isochronous communication, where there is a common frequency between boards but the relative phase is unknown. Our link uses over-sampling and configurable delay at the receiver to synchronize to the local clock phase. A single-bit isochronous data link has been demonstrated on-chip through a transmission line, and on a multi-chip module (MCM) through a superconducting tape between driver and receiver with variable phase offset. Measured results demonstrated correct functionality with a clock margin of 3 dB at 3.6 GHz, and with 5 fJ/bit at 4.2 K.

Dynamic Median Consensus Over Random Networks

This paper studies the problem of finding the median of N distinct numbers distributed across networked agents. Each agent updates its estimate for the median from noisy local observations of one of the N numbers and information from neighbors. We consider an undirected random network that is connected on average, and a noisy observation sequence that has finite variance and almost surely decaying bias. We present a consensus+innovations algorithm with clipped innovations. Under some regularity assumptions on the network and observation model, we show that each agent's local estimate converges to the set of median(s) almost surely at an asymptotic sublinear rate. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented algorithm.

Multi-frame Joint Enhancement for Early Interlaced Videos

Early interlaced videos usually contain multiple and interlacing and complex compression artifacts, which significantly reduce the visual quality. Although the high-definition reconstruction technology for early videos has made great progress in recent years, related research on deinterlacing is still lacking. Traditional methods mainly focus on simple interlacing mechanism, and cannot deal with the complex artifacts in real-world early videos. Recent interlaced video reconstruction deep deinterlacing models only focus on single frame, while neglecting important temporal information. Therefore, this paper proposes a multiframe deinterlacing network joint enhancement network for early interlaced videos that consists of three modules, i.e., spatial vertical interpolation module, temporal alignment and fusion module, and final refinement module. The proposed method can effectively remove the complex artifacts in early videos by using temporal redundancy of multi-fields. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can recover high quality results for both synthetic dataset and real-world early interlaced videos.

X-Ray Scattering from Light-Driven Spin Fluctuations in a Doped Mott Insulator

Manipulating spin fluctuations with ultrafast laser pulses is a promising route to dynamically control collective phenomena in strongly correlated materials. However, understanding how photoexcited spin degrees of freedom evolve at a microscopic level requires a momentum- and energy-resolved characterization of their nonequilibrium dynamics. Here, we study the photoinduced dynamics of finite-momentum spin excitations in two-dimensional Mott insulators on a square lattice. By calculating the time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering cross-section, we show that an ultrafast pump above the Mott gap induces a prompt softening of the spin excitation energy, compatible with a transient renormalization of the exchange interaction. While spin fluctuations in a hole-doped system (paramagnons) are well described by Floquet theory, magnons at half filling are found to deviate from this picture. Furthermore, we show that the paramagnon softening is accompanied by an ultrafast suppression of $d$-wave pairing correlations, indicating a link between the transient spin excitation dynamics and superconducting pairing far from equilibrium.

Which molecule traces what: chemical diagnostics of protostellar sources

The physical and chemical conditions in Class 0/I protostars are fundamental in unlocking the protostellar accretion process and its impact on planet formation. The aim is to determine which physical components are traced by different molecules at sub-arcsecond scales (100 - 400 au). We use a suite of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) datasets in Band 6 (1 mm), Band 5 (1.8 mm) and Band 3 (3 mm) at spatial resolutions 0.5 - 3" for 16 protostellar sources. The protostellar envelope is well traced by C$^{18}$O, DCO$^+$ and N$_2$D$^+$, with the freeze-out of CO governing the chemistry at envelope scales. Molecular outflows are seen in classical shock tracers like SiO and SO, but ice-mantle products such as CH$_3$OH and HNCO released with the shock are also observed. The molecular jet is prominent not only in SiO and SO but also occasionally in H$_2$CO. The cavity walls show tracers of UV-irradiation such as C$_2$H c-C$_3$H$_2$ and CN. The hot inner envelope, apart from showing emission from complex organic molecules (COMs), also presents compact emission from small molecules like H$_2$S, SO, OCS and H$^{13}$CN, most likely related to ice sublimation and high-temperature chemistry. Sub-arcsecond millimeter-wave observations allow to identify those (simple) molecules that best trace each of the physical components of a protostellar system. COMs are found both in the hot inner envelope (high excitation lines) and in the outflows (lower-excitation lines) with comparable abundances. COMs can coexist with hydrocarbons in the same protostellar sources, but they trace different components. In the near future, mid-IR observations with JWST-MIRI will provide complementary information about the hottest gas and the ice mantle content, at unprecedented sensitivity and at resolutions comparable to ALMA for the same sources.

Learning Syntactic Dense Embedding with Correlation Graph for Automatic Readability Assessment

Deep learning models for automatic readability assessment generally discard linguistic features traditionally used in machine learning models for the task. We propose to incorporate linguistic features into neural network models by learning syntactic dense embeddings based on linguistic features. To cope with the relationships between the features, we form a correlation graph among features and use it to learn their embeddings so that similar features will be represented by similar embeddings. Experiments with six data sets of two proficiency levels demonstrate that our proposed methodology can complement BERT-only model to achieve significantly better performances for automatic readability assessment.

Unraveling the Angular Symmetry of Optical Force in a Solid Dielectric

The textbook-accepted formulation of electromagnetic force was proposed by Lorentz in the 19th century, but its validity has been challenged due to incompatibility with the special relativity and momentum conservation. The Einstein-Laub formulation, which can reconcile those conflicts, was suggested as an alternative to the Lorentz formulation. However, intense debates on the exact force are still going on due to lack of experimental evidence. Here, we report the first experimental investigation of angular symmetry of optical force inside a solid dielectric, aiming to distinguish the two formulations. The experiments surprisingly show that the optical force exerted by a Gaussian beam has components with the angular mode number of both 2 and 0, which cannot be explained solely by the Lorentz or the Einstein-Laub formulation. Instead, we found a modified Helmholtz theory by combining the Lorentz force with additional electrostrictive force could explain our experimental results. Our results represent a fundamental leap forward in determining the correct force formulation, and will update the working principles of many applications involving electromagnetic forces.

App's Auto-Login Function Security Testing via Android OS-Level Virtualization

Limited by the small keyboard, most mobile apps support the automatic login feature for better user experience. Therefore, users avoid the inconvenience of retyping their ID and password when an app runs in the foreground again. However, this auto-login function can be exploited to launch the so-called "data-clone attack": once the locally-stored, auto-login depended data are cloned by attackers and placed into their own smartphones, attackers can break through the login-device number limit and log in to the victim's account stealthily. A natural countermeasure is to check the consistency of devicespecific attributes. As long as the new device shows different device fingerprints with the previous one, the app will disable the auto-login function and thus prevent data-clone attacks. In this paper, we develop VPDroid, a transparent Android OS-level virtualization platform tailored for security testing. With VPDroid, security analysts can customize different device artifacts, such as CPU model, Android ID, and phone number, in a virtual phone without user-level API hooking. VPDroid's isolation mechanism ensures that user-mode apps in the virtual phone cannot detect device-specific discrepancies. To assess Android apps' susceptibility to the data-clone attack, we use VPDroid to simulate data-clone attacks with 234 most-downloaded apps. Our experiments on five different virtual phone environments show that VPDroid's device attribute customization can deceive all tested apps that perform device-consistency checks, such as Twitter, WeChat, and PayPal. 19 vendors have confirmed our report as a zero-day vulnerability. Our findings paint a cautionary tale: only enforcing a device-consistency check at client side is still vulnerable to an advanced data-clone attack.

Shadow of topologically charged rotating braneworld black hole

In this paper, we discuss optical properties of the topologically charged rotating black hole. We study the horizon, the photon region, the shadow of the black hole and other observables. The results show that in addition to the black hole spin parameter $a$, the other two parameters, tidal charge $β$ and electric charge $q$, are also found to affect the horizon, the photon region and the black hole shadow. In a certain range, with the increase of the three parameters, the horizon distance, shape of the photon region and the black hole shadow will all shrink. Moreover, with the increase of these three parameters, the distortion parameter $δ_{s}$ gradually increases, while the peak of the black hole energy emission rate decreases.

Study on $Z_{cs}$ and excited $B_s^0$ states in the chiral quark model

Stimulated by the newly observed charged hidden-charm state $Z_{cs}(3985)^-$ by BESIII Collaboration, $Z_{cs}(4000)^+$, $Z_{cs}(4220)^+$ and the excited $B_s^0$ states by LHCb Collaboration, a full calculation including masses and decay widths is emerged in the chiral quark model. For $Z_{cs}$ states, we assign quantum numbers $I(J^P)=\frac{1}{2}(1^+)$ and quark composition $c\bar{c}s\bar{u}$ according to the experiment. For $B_s^0$ states, systematically investigations are performed with $I(J^P)=0(0^+), 0(1^+), 0(2^+)$ both in 2-body $b\bar{s}$ and 4-body $b\bar{s}q\bar{q}~(q=u~\rm{or}~d)$ systems. Each tetraquark calculation takes all structures including meson-meson, diquark-antidiquark and all possible color configurations into account. Among the numerical techniques to solve the 2-body and 4-body Schr{ö}dinger equation, the spatial wave functions are expanded in series of Gaussian basis functions for high precision, which is the way Gaussian expansion method so called. Our results indicate that the low-lying states of 4-quark system are all higher than the corresponding thresholds either for $c\bar{c}s\bar{u}$ or for $b\bar{s}q\bar{q}$ systems. With the help of the real scaling method, we found two resonance states with masses of 4023 MeV and 4042 MeV for $c\bar{c}s\bar{u}$ system. The state $c\bar{c}s\bar{u}(4042)$ has a consistent mass and decay width with the recent observed state $Z_{cs}(3985)^-$. For $b\bar{s}q\bar{q}$ system with $J=0$, some resonance states are also found. The newly observed excited $B_s^0$ states can be accommodated in the chiral quark model as $2S$ or $1D$ states, and the mixing with four-quark states are also needed to be considered.

Global stability of some totally geodesic wave maps

We prove that wave maps that factor as $\mathbb{R}^{1+d} \overset{φ_{\text{S}}}{\to} \mathbb{R} \overset{φ_{\text{I}}}{\to} M$, subject to a sign condition, are globally nonlinear stable under small compactly supported perturbations when $M$ is a space-form. The main innovation is our assumption on $φ_{\text{S}}$, namely that it be a semi-Riemannian submersion. This implies that the background solution has infinite total energy, making this, to the best of our knowledge, the first stability result for factored wave maps with infinite energy backgrounds. We prove that the equations of motion for the perturbation decouple into a nonlinear wave--Klein-Gordon system. We prove global existence for this system and improve on the known regularity assumptions for equations of this type.

Flow Regime Transition in Countercurrent Packed Column Monitored by ECT

Vertical packed columns are widely used in absorption, stripping and distillation processes. Flooding will occur in the vertical packed columns as a result of excessive liquid accumulation, which reduces mass transfer efficiency and causes a large pressure drop. Pressure drop measurements are typically used as the hydrodynamic parameter for predicting flooding. They are, however, only indicative of the occurrence of transition of the flow regime across the packed column. They offer limited spatial information to mass transfer packed column operators and designers. In this work, a new method using Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) is implemented for the first time so that real-time flow regime monitoring at different vertical positions is achieved in a countercurrent packed bed column using ECT. Two normalisation methods are implemented to monitor the transition from pre-loading to flooding in a column of 200 mm diameter, 1200 mm height filled with plastic structured packing. Liquid distribution in the column can be qualitatively visualised via reconstructed ECT images. A flooding index is implemented to quantitatively indicate the progression of local flooding. In experiments, the degree of local flooding is quantified at various gas flow rates and locations of ECT sensor. ECT images were compared with pressure drop and visual observation. The experimental results demonstrate that ECT is capable of monitoring liquid distribution, identifying flow regime transitions and predicting local flooding.

Bardeen black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter

We derive an exact solution of the spherically symmetric Bardeen black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). By treating the magnetic charge $g$ and dark matter parameter $α$ as thermodynamic variables, we find that the thermodynamic first law and the corresponding Smarr formula are satisfied. The thermodynamic stability of the black hole is also studied. The result show that, there exists a critical radius $r_{+}^{C}$, where the heat capacity diverges, suggesting that the black hole is thermodynamically stable in the range $0<r_{+}<r_{+}^{C}$. In addition, the critical radius $r_{+}^{C}$ increases with the magnetic charge $g$ and decreases with the dark matter parameter $α$. Applying the Newman-Janis algorithm, we generalize the spherically symmetric solution to the corresponding rotating black hole. With the metric at hand, the horizons and ergospheres are studied. It turns out that for a fixed dark matter parameter $α$, in a certain range, with the increase of the rotation parameter $a$ and magnetic charge $g$, the Cauchy horizon radius increases while the event horizon radius decreases. Finally, we investigate the energy extraction by the Penrose process in rotating Bardeen black hole surrounded by PFDM.

Representation Learning for Integrating Multi-domain Outcomes to Optimize Individualized Treatments

For mental disorders, patients' underlying mental states are non-observed latent constructs which have to be inferred from observed multi-domain measurements such as diagnostic symptoms and patient functioning scores. Additionally, substantial heterogeneity in the disease diagnosis between patients needs to be addressed for optimizing individualized treatment policy in order to achieve precision medicine. To address these challenges, we propose an integrated learning framework that can simultaneously learn patients' underlying mental states and recommend optimal treatments for each individual. This learning framework is based on the measurement theory in psychiatry for modeling multiple disease diagnostic measures as arising from the underlying causes (true mental states). It allows incorporation of the multivariate pre- and post-treatment outcomes as well as biological measures while preserving the invariant structure for representing patients' latent mental states. A multi-layer neural network is used to allow complex treatment effect heterogeneity. Optimal treatment policy can be inferred for future patients by comparing their potential mental states under different treatments given the observed multi-domain pre-treatment measurements. Experiments on simulated data and a real-world clinical trial data show that the learned treatment polices compare favorably to alternative methods on heterogeneous treatment effects, and have broad utilities which lead to better patient outcomes on multiple domains.

Towards Efficiently Establishing Mutual Distrust Between Host Application and Enclave for SGX

Since its debut, SGX has been used in many applications, e.g., secure data processing. However, previous systems usually assume a trusted enclave and ignore the security issues caused by an untrusted enclave. For instance, a vulnerable (or even malicious) third-party enclave can be exploited to attack the host application and the rest of the system. In this paper, we propose an efficient mechanism to confine an untrusted enclave's behaviors. The threats of an untrusted enclave come from the enclave-host asymmetries. They can be abused to access arbitrary memory regions of its host application, jump to any code location after leaving the enclave and forge the stack register to manipulate the saved context. Our solution breaks such asymmetries and establishes mutual distrust between the host application and the enclave. It leverages Intel MPK for efficient memory isolation and the x86 single-step debugging mechanism to capture the event when an enclave is existing. It then performs the integrity check for the jump target and the stack pointer. We have solved two practical challenges and implemented a prototype system. The evaluation with multiple micro-benchmarks and representative real-world applications demonstrated the efficiency of our system, with less than 4% performance overhead.

UNIFUZZ: A Holistic and Pragmatic Metrics-Driven Platform for Evaluating Fuzzers

A flurry of fuzzing tools (fuzzers) have been proposed in the literature, aiming at detecting software vulnerabilities effectively and efficiently. To date, it is however still challenging to compare fuzzers due to the inconsistency of the benchmarks, performance metrics, and/or environments for evaluation, which buries the useful insights and thus impedes the discovery of promising fuzzing primitives. In this paper, we design and develop UNIFUZZ, an open-source and metrics-driven platform for assessing fuzzers in a comprehensive and quantitative manner. Specifically, UNIFUZZ to date has incorporated 35 usable fuzzers, a benchmark of 20 real-world programs, and six categories of performance metrics. We first systematically study the usability of existing fuzzers, find and fix a number of flaws, and integrate them into UNIFUZZ. Based on the study, we propose a collection of pragmatic performance metrics to evaluate fuzzers from six complementary perspectives. Using UNIFUZZ, we conduct in-depth evaluations of several prominent fuzzers including AFL [1], AFLFast [2], Angora [3], Honggfuzz [4], MOPT [5], QSYM [6], T-Fuzz [7] and VUzzer64 [8]. We find that none of them outperforms the others across all the target programs, and that using a single metric to assess the performance of a fuzzer may lead to unilateral conclusions, which demonstrates the significance of comprehensive metrics. Moreover, we identify and investigate previously overlooked factors that may significantly affect a fuzzer's performance, including instrumentation methods and crash analysis tools. Our empirical results show that they are critical to the evaluation of a fuzzer. We hope that our findings can shed light on reliable fuzzing evaluation, so that we can discover promising fuzzing primitives to effectively facilitate fuzzer designs in the future.

Observing photo-induced chiral edge states of graphene nanoribbons in pump-probe spectroscopies

Photo-induced edge states in low dimensional materials have attracted considerable attention due to the tunability of topological properties and dispersion. Specifically, graphene nanoribbons have been predicted to host chiral edge modes upon irradiation with circularly polarized light. Here, we present numerical calculations of time-resolved angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) and time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (trRIXS) of a graphene nanoribbon. We characterize pump-probe spectroscopic signatures of photo-induced edge states, illustrate the origin of distinct spectral features that arise from Floquet topological edge modes, and investigate the roles of incoming photon energies and finite core-hole lifetime in RIXS. With momentum, energy, and time resolution, pump-probe spectroscopies can play an important role in understanding the behavior of photo-induced topological states of matter.
