Deep unfolding Network for Hyperspectral Image Super-Resolution with Automatic Exposure Correction

In recent years, the fusion of high spatial resolution multispectral image (HR-MSI) and low spatial resolution hyperspectral image (LR-HSI) has been recognized as an effective method for HSI super-resolution (HSI-SR). However, both HSI and MSI may be acquired under extreme conditions such as night or poorly illuminating scenarios, which may cause different exposure levels, thereby seriously downgrading the yielded HSISR. In contrast to most existing methods based on respective low-light enhancements (LLIE) of MSI and HSI followed by their fusion, a deep Unfolding HSI Super-Resolution with Automatic Exposure Correction (UHSR-AEC) is proposed, that can effectively generate a high-quality fused HSI-SR (in texture and features) even under very imbalanced exposures, thanks to the correlation between LLIE and HSI-SR taken into account. Extensive experiments are provided to demonstrate the state-of-the-art overall performance of the proposed UHSR-AEC, including comparison with some benchmark peer methods.

Variational quantum eigensolver with linear depth problem-inspired ansatz for solving portfolio optimization in finance

Great efforts have been dedicated in recent years to explore practical applications for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers, which is a fundamental and challenging problem in quantum computing. As one of the most promising methods, the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) has been extensively studied. In this paper, VQE is applied to solve portfolio optimization problems in finance by designing two hardware-efficient Dicke state ansatze that reach a maximum of 2n two-qubit gate depth and n^2/4 parameters, with n being the number of qubits used. Both ansatze are partitioning-friendly, allowing for the proposal of a highly scalable quantum/classical hybrid distributed computing (HDC) scheme. Combining simultaneous sampling, problem-specific measurement error mitigation, and fragment reuse techniques, we successfully implement the HDC experiments on the superconducting quantum computer Wu Kong with up to 55 qubits. The simulation and experimental results illustrate that the restricted expressibility of the ansatze, induced by the small number of parameters and limited entanglement, is advantageous for solving classical optimization problems with the cost function of the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) for the NISQ era and beyond. Furthermore, the HDC scheme shows great potential for achieving quantum advantage in the NISQ era. We hope that the heuristic idea presented in this paper can motivate fruitful investigations in current and future quantum computing paradigms.

On the Feasibility of Simple Transformer for Dynamic Graph Modeling

Dynamic graph modeling is crucial for understanding complex structures in web graphs, spanning applications in social networks, recommender systems, and more. Most existing methods primarily emphasize structural dependencies and their temporal changes. However, these approaches often overlook detailed temporal aspects or struggle with long-term dependencies. Furthermore, many solutions overly complicate the process by emphasizing intricate module designs to capture dynamic evolutions. In this work, we harness the strength of the Transformer's self-attention mechanism, known for adeptly handling long-range dependencies in sequence modeling. Our approach offers a simple Transformer model, called SimpleDyG, tailored for dynamic graph modeling without complex modifications. We re-conceptualize dynamic graphs as a sequence modeling challenge and introduce a novel temporal alignment technique. This technique not only captures the inherent temporal evolution patterns within dynamic graphs but also streamlines the modeling process of their evolution. To evaluate the efficacy of SimpleDyG, we conduct extensive experiments on four real-world datasets from various domains. The results demonstrate the competitive performance of SimpleDyG in comparison to a series of state-of-the-art approaches despite its simple design.

Multi-IRS-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communications

This paper studies a multi-intelligent-reflecting-surface-(IRS)-enabled integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, in which multiple IRSs are installed to help the base station (BS) provide ISAC services at separate line-of-sight (LoS) blocked areas. We focus on the scenario with semi-passive uniform linear array (ULA) IRSs for sensing, in which each IRS is integrated with dedicated sensors for processing echo signals, and each IRS simultaneously serves one sensing target and multiple communication users (CUs) in its coverage area. In particular, we suppose that the BS sends combined information and dedicated sensing signals for ISAC. Two cases with point and extended targets are considered, in which each IRS aims to estimate the direction-of-arrival (DoA) of the corresponding target and the complete target response matrix, respectively. Under this setup, we first derive the closed-form Cram{é}r-Rao bounds (CRBs) for parameters estimation under the two target models. For the point target case, the CRB for DoA estimation is shown to be inversely proportional to the cubic of the number of sensors at each IRS, while for the extended target case, the CRB for target response matrix estimation is proportional to the number of IRS sensors. Next, we consider two different types of CU receivers that can and cannot cancel the interference from dedicated sensing signals prior to information decoding. To achieve fair and optimized sensing performance, we minimize the maximum CRB at all IRSs for the two target cases, via jointly optimizing the transmit beamformers at the BS and the reflective beamformers at the multiple IRSs, subject to the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at individual CUs, the maximum transmit power constraint at the BS, and the unit-modulus constraints at the multiple IRSs.

Encoding Enhanced Complex CNN for Accurate and Highly Accelerated MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using hyperpolarized noble gases provides a way to visualize the structure and function of human lung, but the long imaging time limits its broad research and clinical applications. Deep learning has demonstrated great potential for accelerating MRI by reconstructing images from undersampled data. However, most existing deep conventional neural networks (CNN) directly apply square convolution to k-space data without considering the inherent properties of k-space sampling, limiting k-space learning efficiency and image reconstruction quality. In this work, we propose an encoding enhanced (EN2) complex CNN for highly undersampled pulmonary MRI reconstruction. EN2 employs convolution along either the frequency or phase-encoding direction, resembling the mechanisms of k-space sampling, to maximize the utilization of the encoding correlation and integrity within a row or column of k-space. We also employ complex convolution to learn rich representations from the complex k-space data. In addition, we develop a feature-strengthened modularized unit to further boost the reconstruction performance. Experiments demonstrate that our approach can accurately reconstruct hyperpolarized 129Xe and 1H lung MRI from 6-fold undersampled k-space data and provide lung function measurements with minimal biases compared with fully-sampled image. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithmic components and indicate that the proposed approach could be used for accelerated pulmonary MRI in research and clinical lung disease patient care.

Estimating Propensity for Causality-based Recommendation without Exposure Data

Causality-based recommendation systems focus on the causal effects of user-item interactions resulting from item exposure (i.e., which items are recommended or exposed to the user), as opposed to conventional correlation-based recommendation. They are gaining popularity due to their multi-sided benefits to users, sellers and platforms alike. However, existing causality-based recommendation methods require additional input in the form of exposure data and/or propensity scores (i.e., the probability of exposure) for training. Such data, crucial for modeling causality in recommendation, are often not available in real-world situations due to technical or privacy constraints. In this paper, we bridge the gap by proposing a new framework, called Propensity Estimation for Causality-based Recommendation (PropCare). It can estimate the propensity and exposure from a more practical setup, where only interaction data are available without any ground truth on exposure or propensity in training and inference. We demonstrate that, by relating the pairwise characteristics between propensity and item popularity, PropCare enables competitive causality-based recommendation given only the conventional interaction data. We further present a theoretical analysis on the bias of the causal effect under our model estimation. Finally, we empirically evaluate PropCare through both quantitative and qualitative experiments.

Quantum geometry induced nonlinear transport in altermagnets

Quantum geometry plays a pivotal role in the second-order response of $\cal PT$-symmetric antiferromagnets. Here we study the nonlinear response of 2D altermagnets protected by $C_n\cal T$ symmetry and show that their leading nonlinear response is third-order. Furthermore, we show that the contributions from the quantum metric and Berry curvature enter separately: the longitudinal response for all planar altermagnets \emph{only} has a contribution from the quantum metric quadrupole (QMQ), while transverse responses in general have contributions from both the Berry curvature quadrupole (BCQ) and QMQ. We show that for the well-known example of $d$-wave altermagnets the Hall response is dominated by the BCQ. Both longitudinal and transverse responses are strongly dependent on the crystalline anisotropy. While altermagnets are strictly defined in the limit of vanishing SOC, real altermagnets exhibit weak SOC, which is essential to observe this response. Specifically, SOC gaps the spin-group protected nodal line, generating a response peak that is sharpest when SOC is weak. Two Dirac nodes also contribute a divergence to the nonlinear response, whose scaling changes as a function of SOC. Finally, we apply our results to thin films of the 3D altermagnet RuO$_2$. Our work uncovers distinct features of altermagnets in nonlinear transport, providing experimental signatures as well as a guide to disentangling the different components of their quantum geometry.

A 12.4 day periodicity in a close binary system after a supernova

Neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes are the remnants of massive star explosions. Most massive stars reside in close binary systems, and the interplay between the companion star and the newly formed compact object has been theoretically explored, but signatures for binarity or evidence for the formation of a compact object during a supernova explosion are still lacking. Here we report a stripped-envelope supernova, SN 2022jli, which shows 12.4-day periodic undulations during the declining light curve. Narrow H$α$ emission is detected in late-time spectra with concordant periodic velocity shifts, likely arising from hydrogen gas stripped from a companion and accreted onto the compact remnant. A new Fermi/LAT $γ$-ray source is temporally and positionally consistent with SN 2022jli. The observed properties of SN 2022jli, including periodic undulations in the optical light curve, coherent H$α$ emission shifting, and evidence for association with a $γ$-ray source, point to the explosion of a massive star in a binary system leaving behind a bound compact remnant. Mass accretion from the companion star onto the compact object powers the light curve of the supernova and generates the $γ$-ray emission.

Multi-unit Auction over a Social Network

Diffusion auction is an emerging business model where a seller aims to incentivise buyers in a social network to diffuse the auction information thereby attracting potential buyers. We focus on designing mechanisms for multi-unit diffusion auctions. Despite numerous attempts at this problem, existing mechanisms either fail to be incentive compatible (IC) or achieve only an unsatisfactory level of social welfare (SW). Here, we propose a novel graph exploration technique to realise multi-item diffusion auction. This technique ensures that potential competition among buyers stay ``localised'' so as to facilitate truthful bidding. Using this technique, we design multi-unit diffusion auction mechanisms MUDAN and MUDAN-$m$. Both mechanisms satisfy, among other properties, IC and $1/m$-weak efficiency. We also show that they achieve optimal social welfare for the class of rewardless diffusion auctions. While MUDAN addresses the bottleneck case when each buyer demands only a single item, MUDAN-$m$ handles the more general, multi-demand setting. We further demonstrate that these mechanisms achieve near-optimal social welfare through experiments.

Classification of Classical Spin Liquids: Topological Quantum Chemistry and Crystalline Symmetry

Frustrated magnetic systems can host highly interesting phases known as classical spin liquids (CSLs), which feature {extensive} ground state degeneracy and lack long-range magnetic order. Recently, Yan and Benton et al. proposed a classification scheme of CSLs in the large-$\mathcal{N}$ (soft spin) limit [arXiv.2305.00155], [arXiv:2305.19189]. This scheme classifies CSLs into two categories: the algebraic CSLs and the fragile topological CSLs, each with their own correlation properties, low energy effective description, and finer classification frameworks. In this work, we further develop the classification scheme by considering the role of crystalline symmetry. We present a mathematical framework for computing the band representation of the flat bands in the spectrum of these CSLs, which extends beyond the conventional representation analysis. It allows one to determine whether the algebraic CSLs, which features gapless points on their bottom flat bands, are protected by symmetry or not. It also provides more information on the finer classifications of algebraic and fragile topological CSLs. We demonstrate this framework via concrete examples and showcase its power by constructing a pinch-line algebraic CSL protected by symmetry.

Voucher Abuse Detection with Prompt-based Fine-tuning on Graph Neural Networks

Voucher abuse detection is an important anomaly detection problem in E-commerce. While many GNN-based solutions have emerged, the supervised paradigm depends on a large quantity of labeled data. A popular alternative is to adopt self-supervised pre-training using label-free data, and further fine-tune on a downstream task with limited labels. Nevertheless, the "pre-train, fine-tune" paradigm is often plagued by the objective gap between pre-training and downstream tasks. Hence, we propose VPGNN, a prompt-based fine-tuning framework on GNNs for voucher abuse detection. We design a novel graph prompting function to reformulate the downstream task into a similar template as the pretext task in pre-training, thereby narrowing the objective gap. Extensive experiments on both proprietary and public datasets demonstrate the strength of VPGNN in both few-shot and semi-supervised scenarios. Moreover, an online deployment of VPGNN in a production environment shows a 23.4% improvement over two existing deployed models.

Robust Long-Tailed Learning via Label-Aware Bounded CVaR

Data in the real-world classification problems are always imbalanced or long-tailed, wherein the majority classes have the most of the samples that dominate the model training. In such setting, the naive model tends to have poor performance on the minority classes. Previously, a variety of loss modifications have been proposed to address the long-tailed leaning problem, while these methods either treat the samples in the same class indiscriminatingly or lack a theoretical guarantee. In this paper, we propose two novel approaches based on CVaR (Conditional Value at Risk) to improve the performance of long-tailed learning with a solid theoretical ground. Specifically, we firstly introduce a Label-Aware Bounded CVaR (LAB-CVaR) loss to overcome the pessimistic result of the original CVaR, and further design the optimal weight bounds for LAB-CVaR theoretically. Based on LAB-CVaR, we additionally propose a LAB-CVaR with logit adjustment (LAB-CVaR-logit) loss to stabilize the optimization process, where we also offer the theoretical support. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets with long-tailed label distributions verify the superiority of our proposed methods.

Training-Free Energy Beamforming Assisted by Wireless Sensing

This paper studies the transmit energy beamforming in a multi-antenna wireless power transfer (WPT) system, in which an access point (AP) equipped with a uniform linear array (ULA) sends radio signals to wirelessly charge multiple single-antenna energy receivers (ERs). Different from conventional energy beamforming designs that require the AP to acquire the channel state information (CSI) via training and feedback, we propose a new training-free energy beamforming approach assisted by wireless radar sensing, which is implemented based on the following two-stage protocol. In the first stage, the AP performs wireless radar sensing to estimate the path gain and angle parameters of the ERs for constructing the corresponding CSI. In the second stage, the AP implements the transmit energy beamforming based on the constructed CSI to efficiently charge these ERs in a fair manner. Under this setup, first, we jointly optimize the sensing beamformers and duration in the first stage to minimize the sensing duration, while ensuring a given accuracy threshold for parameters estimation subject to the maximum transmit power constraint at the AP. Next, we optimize the energy beamformers in the second stage to maximize the minimum harvested energy by all ERs. In this approach, the estimation accuracy threshold for the first stage is properly designed to balance the resource allocation between the two stages for optimizing the ultimate energy harvesting performance. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed training-free energy beamforming design performs close to the performance upper bound with perfect CSI, and outperforms the benchmark schemes without such joint optimization and that with isotropic transmission.

Fundamental CRB-Rate Tradeoff in Multi-Antenna ISAC Systems with Information Multicasting and Multi-Target Sensing

This paper investigates the performance tradeoff for a multi-antenna integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system with simultaneous information multicasting and multi-target sensing, in which a multi-antenna base station (BS) sends the common information messages to a set of single-antenna communication users (CUs) and estimates the parameters of multiple sensing targets based on the echo signals concurrently. We consider two target sensing scenarios without and with prior target knowledge at the BS, in which the BS is interested in estimating the complete multi-target response matrix and the target reflection coefficients/angles, respectively. First, we consider the capacity-achieving transmission and characterize the fundamental tradeoff between the achievable rate and the multi-target estimation Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) accordingly.

Optimal Coordinated Transmit Beamforming for Networked Integrated Sensing and Communications

This paper studies a multi-antenna networked integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, in which a set of multi-antenna base stations (BSs) employ the coordinated transmit beamforming to serve multiple single-antenna communication users (CUs) and perform joint target detection by exploiting the reflected signals simultaneously. To facilitate target sensing, the BSs transmit dedicated sensing signals combined with their information signals. Accordingly, we consider two types of CU receivers with and without the capability of canceling the interference from the dedicated sensing signals, respectively. In addition, we investigate two scenarios with and without time synchronization among the BSs. For the scenario with synchronization, the BSs can exploit the target-reflected signals over both the direct links (BS-to-target-to-originated BS links) and the cross-links (BS-to-target-to-other BSs links) for joint detection, while in the unsynchronized scenario, the BSs can only utilize the target-reflected signals over the direct links. For each scenario under different types of CU receivers, we optimize the coordinated transmit beamforming at the BSs to maximize the minimum detection probability over a particular targeted area, while guaranteeing the required minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at the CUs. These SINR-constrained detection probability maximization problems are recast as non-convex quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs), which are then optimally solved via the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) technique.

Motif Graph Neural Network

Graphs can model complicated interactions between entities, which naturally emerge in many important applications. These applications can often be cast into standard graph learning tasks, in which a crucial step is to learn low-dimensional graph representations. Graph neural networks (GNNs) are currently the most popular model in graph embedding approaches. However, standard GNNs in the neighborhood aggregation paradigm suffer from limited discriminative power in distinguishing \emph{high-order} graph structures as opposed to \emph{low-order} structures. To capture high-order structures, researchers have resorted to motifs and developed motif-based GNNs. However, existing motif-based GNNs still often suffer from less discriminative power on high-order structures. To overcome the above limitations, we propose Motif Graph Neural Network (MGNN), a novel framework to better capture high-order structures, hinging on our proposed motif redundancy minimization operator and injective motif combination. First, MGNN produces a set of node representations w.r.t. each motif. The next phase is our proposed redundancy minimization among motifs which compares the motifs with each other and distills the features unique to each motif. Finally, MGNN performs the updating of node representations by combining multiple representations from different motifs. In particular, to enhance the discriminative power, MGNN utilizes an injective function to combine the representations w.r.t. different motifs. We further show that our proposed architecture increases the expressive power of GNNs with a theoretical analysis. We demonstrate that MGNN outperforms state-of-the-art methods on seven public benchmarks on both node classification and graph classification tasks.

SDRCNN: A single-scale dense residual connected convolutional neural network for pansharpening

Pansharpening is a process of fusing a high spatial resolution panchromatic image and a low spatial resolution multispectral image to create a high-resolution multispectral image. A novel single-branch, single-scale lightweight convolutional neural network, named SDRCNN, is developed in this study. By using a novel dense residual connected structure and convolution block, SDRCNN achieved a better trade-off between accuracy and efficiency. The performance of SDRCNN was tested using four datasets from the WorldView-3, WorldView-2 and QuickBird satellites. The compared methods include eight traditional methods (i.e., GS, GSA, PRACS, BDSD, SFIM, GLP-CBD, CDIF and LRTCFPan) and five lightweight deep learning methods (i.e., PNN, PanNet, BayesianNet, DMDNet and FusionNet). Based on a visual inspection of the pansharpened images created and the associated absolute residual maps, SDRCNN exhibited least spatial detail blurring and spectral distortion, amongst all the methods considered. The values of the quantitative evaluation metrics were closest to their ideal values when SDRCNN was used. The processing time of SDRCNN was also the shortest among all methods tested. Finally, the effectiveness of each component in the SDRCNN was demonstrated in ablation experiments. All of these confirmed the superiority of SDRCNN.
