Thermostatic Hyperthermia with Non-invasive Temperature Monitoring through Speed of Sound Imaging

Hyperthermia therapy (HT) is used to treat diseases through heating of high temperature usually in conjunction with some other medical therapeutics like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In this study, we propose a promising thermostatic hyperthermia method that uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for clinical tumor treatment combined with diagnostic ultrasound image guidance and non-invasive temperature monitoring through the speed of sound (SOS) imaging. HIFU heating is realized by a ring ultrasound transducer array with 256 elements. The inner structure information of thigh tissue is obtained by B-mode ultrasound imaging. Since the relationship between the temperature and the SOS in the different human tissue is available, the temperature detection is converted to the SOS detection obtained by the full-wave inversion (FWI) method. Simulation results show that our model can achieve expected thermostatic hyperthermia on tumor target with 0.2 degree maximum temperature fluctuation for 5 hours. This study verifies the feasibility of the proposed thermostatic hyperthermia model. Furthermore, the temperature measurement can share the same ultrasound transducer array for HIFU heating and B-mode ultrasound imaging, which provides a guiding significance for clinical application.

Observation of Ising spin-nematic order and its close relationship to the superconductivity in FeSe single crystals

Superconducting FeSe single crystals of (001) orientation are synthesized via a hydrothermal ion-release route. An Ising spin-nematic order is identified by our systematic measurements of in-plane angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) and static magnetization. The turn-on temperature of anisotropic AMR signifies the Ising spin-nematic ordering temperature Tsn, below which a two-fold rotational symmetry is observed in the iron plane. A downward curvature appears below Tsn in the temperature dependence of static magnetization for the weak in-plane magnetic field as reported previously. Remarkably, we find a universal linear relationship between Tc and Tsn among various superconducting samples, indicating that the spin nematicity and the superconductivity in FeSe have a common microscopic origin.

Edge superconducting state in attractive U Kane-Mele-Hubbard model

We theoretically investigate the phase transition from topological insulator (TI) to superconductor in the attractive U Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with self-consistent mean field method. We demonstrate the existence of edge superconducting state (ESS), in which the bulk is still an insulator and the superconductivity only appears near the edges. The ESS results from the special energy dispersion of TI, and is a general property of the superconductivity in TI. The phase transition in this model essentially consists of two steps. When the attractive U becomes nonzero, ESS appears immediately. After the attractive U exceeds a critical value $U_c$, the whole system becomes a superconductor. The effective model of the ESS has also been discussed and we believe that the conception of ESS can be realized in atomic optical lattice system.
