Equivalence of Two Approaches for Quantum-Classical Hybrid Systems

We discuss two approaches that are used frequently to describe quantum-classical hybrid system. One is the well-known mean-field theory and the other adopts a set of hybrid brackets which is a mixture of quantum commutators and classical Poisson brackets. We prove that these two approaches are equivalent.

Electrothermal flow in Dielectrophoresis of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

We theoretically investigate the impact of the electrothermal flow on the dielectrophoretic separation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT). The electrothermal flow is observed to control the motions of semiconducting SWNTs in a sizeable domain near the electrodes under typical experimental conditions, therefore helping the dielectrophoretic force to attract semiconducting SWNTs in a broader range. Moreover, with the increase of the surfactant concentration, the electrothermal flow is enhanced, and with the change of frequency, the pattern of the electrothermal flow changes. It is shown that under some typical experimental conditions of dielectrophoresis separation of SWNTs, the electrothermal flow is a dominating factor in determining the motion of SWNTs.

Ground states of hard-core bosons in one dimensional periodic potentials

With Girardeau's Fermi-Bose mapping, we find the exact ground states of hard-core bosons residing in a one dimensional periodic potential. The analysis of these ground states shows that when the number of bosons $N$ is commensurate with the number of wells $M$ in the periodic potential, the boson system is a Mott insulator whose energy gap, however, is given by the single-particle band gap of the periodic potential; when $N$ is not commensurate with $M$, the system is a metal (not a superfluid). In fact, we argue that there may be no superfluid phase for any one-dimensional boson system in terms of Landau's criterion of superfluidity. The Kronig-Penney potential is used to illustrate our results.
