FedCoin: A Peer-to-Peer Payment System for Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) is an emerging collaborative machine learning method to train models on distributed datasets with privacy concerns. To properly incentivize data owners to contribute their efforts, Shapley Value (SV) is often adopted to fairly assess their contribution. However, the calculation of SV is time-consuming and computationally costly. In this paper, we propose FedCoin, a blockchain-based peer-to-peer payment system for FL to enable a feasible SV based profit distribution. In FedCoin, blockchain consensus entities calculate SVs and a new block is created based on the proof of Shapley (PoSap) protocol. It is in contrast to the popular BitCoin network where consensus entities "mine" new blocks by solving meaningless puzzles. Based on the computed SVs, a scheme for dividing the incentive payoffs among FL clients with nonrepudiation and tamper-resistance properties is proposed. Experimental results based on real-world data show that FedCoin can promote high-quality data from FL clients through accurately computing SVs with an upper bound on the computational resources required for reaching consensus. It opens opportunities for non-data owners to play a role in FL.

Hybrid EMT-TS Simulation Strategies to Study High Bandwidth MMC-Based HVdc Systems

Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are widely used in the design of modern high-voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission system. High-fidelity dynamic models of MMCs-based HVdc system require small simulation time step and can be accurately modeled in electro-magnetic transient (EMT) simulation programs. The EMT program exhibits slow simulation speed and limitation on the size of the model and brings certain challenges to test the high-fidelity HVdc model in system-level simulations. This paper presents the design and implementation of a hybrid simulation framework, which enables the co-simulation of the EMT model of Atlanta-Orlando HVdc line and the transient stability (TS) model of the entire Eastern Interconnection system. This paper also introduces the implementation of two high-fidelity HVdc line models simulated at different time steps and discusses a dedicated method for sizing the buffer areas on both sides of the HVdc line. The simulation results of the two HVdc models with different sizes of buffer areas are presented and compared.

In-orbit Calibration to the Point-Spread Function of Insight-HXMT

We make the in-orbit calibration to the point-spread functions (PSFs) of the collimators of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope with the scanning observation of the Crab. We construct the empirical adjustments to the theoretically calculated geometrical PSFs. The adjustments contain two parts: a rotating matrix to adjust the directional deviation of the collimators and a paraboloidal function to correct the inhomogeneity of the real PSFs. The parameters of the adjusting matrices and paraboloidal functions are determined by fitting the scanning data with lower scanning speed and smaller intervals during the calibration observations. After the PSF calibration, the systematic errors in source localization in the Galactic plane scanning survey are 0.010 deg, 0.015 deg, 0.113 deg for the Low-Energy Telescope (LE), the Medium-Energy telescope (ME) and the High-Energy telescope (HE), respectively; meanwhile, the systematic errors in source flux estimation are 1.8%, 1.6%, 2.7% for LE, ME and HE, respectively.

Ultrafast two-photon emission in a doped semiconductor thin film

As a high-order quantum transition, two-photon emission has an extremely low occurrence rate compared to one-photon emission, thus having been considered a forbidden process. Here, we propose a scheme that allows ultrafast two-photon emission, leveraging highly confined surface plasmon polariton modes in a degenerately-doped, light-emitting semiconductor thin film. The surface plasmon polariton modes are tailored to have simultaneous spectral and spatial overlap with the two-photon emission in the semiconductor. Using degenerately-doped InSb as the prototype material, we show that the two-photon emission can be accelerated by 10 orders of magnitude: from tens of milliseconds to picoseconds, surpassing the one-photon emission rate. Our result provides a semiconductor platform for ultrafast single and entangled photon generation, with a tunable emission wavelength in the mid-infrared.

NOMA-Aided Mobile Edge Computing via User Cooperation

Exploiting the idle computation resources of mobile devices in mobile edge computing (MEC) system can achieve both channel diversity and computing diversity as mobile devices can offload their computation tasks to nearby mobile devices in addition to MEC server embedded access point (AP). In this paper, we propose a non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA)-aided cooperative computing scheme in a basic three-node MEC system consisting of a user, a helper, and an AP. In particular, we assume that the user can simultaneously offload data to the helper and the AP using NOMA, while the helper can locally compute data and offload data to the AP at the same time. We study two optimization problems, energy consumption minimization and offloading data maximization, by joint communication and computation resource allocation of the user and helper. We find the optimal solutions for the two non-convex problems by some proper mathematical methods. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. Some useful insights are provided for practical designs.

A Nonlinear Regression Method for Composite Protection Modeling of Induction Motor Loads

Protection equipment is used to prevent damage to induction motor loads by isolating them from power systems in the event of severe faults. Modeling the response of induction motor loads and their protection is vital for power system planning and operation, especially in understanding system's dynamic performance and stability after a fault occurs. Induction motors are usually equipped with several types of protection with different operation mechanisms, making it challenging to develop adequate yet not overly complex protection models and determine their parameters for aggregate induction motor models. This paper proposes an optimization-based nonlinear regression framework to determine protection model parameters for aggregate induction motor loads in commercial buildings. Using a mathematical abstraction, the task of determining a suitable set of parameters for the protection model in composite load models is formulated as a nonlinear regression problem. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the application of the framework. Sensitivity studies are presented to demonstrate the impact of lack of available motor load information on the accuracy of the protection models.

The Poincaré inequality and quadratic transportation-variance inequalities

It is known that the Poincaré inequality is equivalent to the quadratic transportation-variance inequality (namely $W_2^2(fμ,μ) \leqslant C_V \mathrm{Var}_μ(f)$), see Jourdain \cite{Jourdain} and most recently Ledoux \cite{Ledoux18}. We give two alternative proofs to this fact. In particular, we achieve a smaller $C_V$ than before, which equals the double of Poincaré constant. Applying the same argument leads to more characterizations of the Poincaré inequality. Our method also yields a by-product as the equivalence between the logarithmic Sobolev inequality and strict contraction of heat flow in Wasserstein space provided that the Bakry-Émery curvature has a lower bound (here the control constants may depend on the curvature bound). Next, we present a comparison inequality between $W_2^2(fμ,μ)$ and its centralization $W_2^2(f_cμ,μ)$ for $f_c = \frac{|\sqrt{f} - μ(\sqrt{f})|^2}{\mathrm{Var}_μ(\sqrt{f})}$, which may be viewed as some special counterpart of the Rothaus' lemma for relative entropy. Then it yields some new bound of $W_2^2(fμ,μ)$ associated to the variance of $\sqrt{f}$ rather than $f$. As a by-product, we have another proof to derive the quadratic transportation-information inequality from Lyapunov condition, avoiding the Bobkov-Götze's characterization of the Talagrand's inequality.

The free group on n generators modulo n+u random relations as n goes to infinity

We show that, as n goes to infinity, the free group on n generators, modulo n+u random relations, converges to a random group that we give explicitly. This random group is a non-abelian version of the random abelian groups that feature in the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics. For each n, these random groups belong to the few relator model in the Gromov model of random groups.

DermGAN: Synthetic Generation of Clinical Skin Images with Pathology

Despite the recent success in applying supervised deep learning to medical imaging tasks, the problem of obtaining large and diverse expert-annotated datasets required for the development of high performant models remains particularly challenging. In this work, we explore the possibility of using Generative Adverserial Networks (GAN) to synthesize clinical images with skin condition. We propose DermGAN, an adaptation of the popular Pix2Pix architecture, to create synthetic images for a pre-specified skin condition while being able to vary its size, location and the underlying skin color. We demonstrate that the generated images are of high fidelity using objective GAN evaluation metrics. In a Human Turing test, we note that the synthetic images are not only visually similar to real images, but also embody the respective skin condition in dermatologists' eyes. Finally, when using the synthetic images as a data augmentation technique for training a skin condition classifier, we observe that the model performs comparably to the baseline model overall while improving on rare but malignant conditions.

GIFT: Learning Transformation-Invariant Dense Visual Descriptors via Group CNNs

Finding local correspondences between images with different viewpoints requires local descriptors that are robust against geometric transformations. An approach for transformation invariance is to integrate out the transformations by pooling the features extracted from transformed versions of an image. However, the feature pooling may sacrifice the distinctiveness of the resulting descriptors. In this paper, we introduce a novel visual descriptor named Group Invariant Feature Transform (GIFT), which is both discriminative and robust to geometric transformations. The key idea is that the features extracted from the transformed versions of an image can be viewed as a function defined on the group of the transformations. Instead of feature pooling, we use group convolutions to exploit underlying structures of the extracted features on the group, resulting in descriptors that are both discriminative and provably invariant to the group of transformations. Extensive experiments show that GIFT outperforms state-of-the-art methods on several benchmark datasets and practically improves the performance of relative pose estimation.

Overview to the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) Satellite

As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT), which was dubbed as Insight-HXMT after the launch on June 15, 2017, is a wide-band (1-250 keV) slat-collimator-based X-ray astronomy satellite with the capability of all-sky monitoring in 0.2-3 MeV. It was designed to perform pointing, scanning and gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations and, based on the Direct Demodulation Method (DDM), the image of the scanned sky region can be reconstructed. Here we give an overview of the mission and its progresses, including payload, core sciences, ground calibration/facility, ground segment, data archive, software, in-orbit performance, calibration, background model, observations and some preliminary results.

WaveletAE: A Wavelet-enhanced Autoencoder for Wind Turbine Blade Icing Detection

Wind power, as an alternative to burning fossil fuels, is abundant and inexhaustible. To fully utilize wind power, wind farms are usually located in areas of high altitude and facing serious ice conditions, which can lead to serious consequences. Quick detection of blade ice accretion is crucial for the maintenance of wind farms. Unlike traditional methods of installing expensive physical detectors on wind blades, data-driven approaches are increasingly popular for inspecting the wind turbine failures. In this work, we propose a wavelet enhanced autoencoder model (WaveletAE) to identify wind turbine dysfunction by analyzing the multivariate time series monitored by the SCADA system. WaveletAE is enhanced with wavelet detail coefficients to enforce the autoencoder to capture information from multiple scales, and the CNN-LSTM architecture is applied to learn channel-wise and temporal-wise relations. The empirical study shows that the proposed model outperforms other state-of-the-art time series anomaly detection methods for real-world blade icing detection.

On the level of modular curves that give rise to isolated $j$-invariants

We say a closed point $x$ on a curve $C$ is sporadic if $C$ has only finitely many closed points of degree at most $\operatorname{deg}(x)$ and that $x$ is isolated if it is not in a family of effective degree $d$ divisors parametrized by $\mathbb{P}^1$ or a positive rank abelian variety (see Section 4 for more precise definitions and a proof that sporadic points are isolated). Motivated by well-known classification problems concerning rational torsion of elliptic curves, we study sporadic and isolated points on the modular curves $X_1(N)$. In particular, we show that any non-cuspidal non-CM sporadic, respectively isolated, point $x \in X_1(N)$ maps down to a sporadic, respectively isolated, point on a modular curve $X_1(d)$, where $d$ is bounded by a constant depending only on $j(x)$. Conditionally, we show that $d$ is bounded by a constant depending only on the degree of $\mathbb{Q}(j(x))$, so in particular there are only finitely many $j$-invariants of bounded degree that give rise to sporadic or isolated points.

A deep learning system for differential diagnosis of skin diseases

Skin conditions affect an estimated 1.9 billion people worldwide. A shortage of dermatologists causes long wait times and leads patients to seek dermatologic care from general practitioners. However, the diagnostic accuracy of general practitioners has been reported to be only 0.24-0.70 (compared to 0.77-0.96 for dermatologists), resulting in referral errors, delays in care, and errors in diagnosis and treatment. In this paper, we developed a deep learning system (DLS) to provide a differential diagnosis of skin conditions for clinical cases (skin photographs and associated medical histories). The DLS distinguishes between 26 skin conditions that represent roughly 80% of the volume of skin conditions seen in primary care. The DLS was developed and validated using de-identified cases from a teledermatology practice serving 17 clinical sites via a temporal split: the first 14,021 cases for development and the last 3,756 cases for validation. On the validation set, where a panel of three board-certified dermatologists defined the reference standard for every case, the DLS achieved 0.71 and 0.93 top-1 and top-3 accuracies respectively. For a random subset of the validation set (n=963 cases), 18 clinicians reviewed the cases for comparison. On this subset, the DLS achieved a 0.67 top-1 accuracy, non-inferior to board-certified dermatologists (0.63, p<0.001), and higher than primary care physicians (PCPs, 0.45) and nurse practitioners (NPs, 0.41). The top-3 accuracy showed a similar trend: 0.90 DLS, 0.75 dermatologists, 0.60 PCPs, and 0.55 NPs. These results highlight the potential of the DLS to augment general practitioners to accurately diagnose skin conditions by suggesting differential diagnoses that may not have been considered. Future work will be needed to prospectively assess the clinical impact of using this tool in actual clinical workflows.

Saving rainforests is a key to halting adverse climate changes. In this paper, we introduce an innovative solution built on acoustic surveillance and machine learning technologies to help rainforest conservation. In particular, We propose new convolutional neural network (CNN) models for environmental sound classification and achieved promising preliminary results on two datasets, including a public audio dataset and our real rainforest sound dataset. The proposed audio classification models can be easily extended in an automated machine learning paradigm and integrated in cloud-based services for real world deployment.

Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.

Joint Uplink and Downlink Transmissions in User-Centric OFDMA Cloud-RAN

This paper studies joint uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) resource allocation in user-centric orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) cloud radio access network (CRAN), where the users select the distributed remote radio heads (RRHs) to cooperatively serve their UL and DL transmissions over different subcarriers (SCs). The goal of this paper is to maximize the system throughput through jointly optimizing UL/DL scheduling, SC assignment, RRH grouping/clustering and power allocation under the maximum power and fronthaul capacity constraints. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming problem which is non-convex and NP-hard. We propose an efficient algorithm based on the Lagrange duality method to obtain an asymptotically optimal solution for this problem. A heuristic algorithm is further proposed to reduce the complexity. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed heuristic algorithm also has a close-to-optimal performance, and the proposed algorithms can considerably improve the system throughput compared to other benchmark schemes.

Photometric investigations on two totally eclipsing contact binaries: V342 UMa and V509 Cam

By analyzing two sets of complete $BVR_cI_c$ light curves of V342 UMa and three sets of complete $BVR_cI_c$ light curves of V509 Cam, we determined that the two systems are both W-subtype contact binaries and that V342 UMa shows a shallow contact configuration, while V509 Cam exhibits a medium contact configuration. Since both of them are totally eclipsing binaries, the physical parameters derived only by the photometric light curves are reliable.Meanwhile, the period changes of the two targets were analyzed based on all available eclipsing times. We discovered that V342 UMa shows long-term period decrease with a rate of $-1.02(\pm0.54)\times10^{-7}$ days/year and that V509 Cam exhibits long-term period increase with a rate of $3.96(\pm0.90)\times10^{-8}$ days/year. Both the conservative mass transfer and AML via magnetic stellar winds can interpret the long-term period decrease of V342 UMa. The long-term period increase of V509 Cam can be explained by mass transfer from the less massive star to the more massive one. The absolute parameters of the two binaries were estimated according to the Gaia distances and our derived photometric solution results. This method can be extended to other contact binaries without radial velocities but with reliable photometric solutions. The evolutionary states of them were discussed, we found that they reveal identical properties of other W-subtype contact systems.
