Generation and Measurement of High-order Optical Vortex via Cross-Phase

The generation and measurement of optical vortex (OV) are the basis for a variety of related applications. However, the special case of high-order OVs has not been sufficient addressed yet. Herein, a generation and measurement method of high-order OV via utilizing the CP is investigated. In the experiment, we generate OVs with l=60, p=20 and successfully measure OVs with l=200,p=0, where experimental results agree well with simulation outcome. On this basis, the intensity distributions of LG and HG beams (corresponding to the generation and measurement) versus waist radius of initial light beams is discussed. This work provides an alternative method to generate or measure high-order OV, which will facilitate applications in optical micro-manipulation, quantum entanglement and rotation speed detection.

Economical Caching for Scalable Videos in Cache-enabled Heterogeneous Networks

We develop the optimal economical caching schemes in cache-enabled heterogeneous networks, while delivering multimedia video services with personalized viewing qualities to mobile users. By applying scalable video coding (SVC), each video file to be requested is divided into one base layer (BL) and several enhancement layers (ELs). In order to assign different transmission tasks, the serving small-cell base stations (SBSs) are grouped into K clusters. The SBSs are able to cache and cooperatively transmit BL and EL contents to the user. We analytically derive the expressions for successful transmission probability and ergodic service rate, and then the closed form of EConomical Efficiency (ECE) is obtained. In order to enhance the ECE performance, we formulate the ECE optimization problems for two cases. In the first case, with equal cache size equipped at each SBS, the layer caching indicator is determined. Since this problem is NP-hard, after the l0-norm approximation, the discrete optimization variables are relaxed to be continuous, and this relaxed problem is convex. Next, based on the optimal solution derived from the relaxed problem, we devise a greedystrategy based heuristic algorithm to achieve the near-optimal layer caching indicators. In the second case, the cache size for each SBS, the layer size and the layer caching indicator are jointly optimized. This problem is a mixed integer programming problem, which is more challenging. To effectively solve this problem, the original ECE maximization problem is divided into two subproblems. These two subproblems are iteratively solved until the original optimization problem is convergent. Numerical results verify the correctness of theoretical derivations. Additionally, compared to the most popular layer placement strategy, the performance superiority of the proposed SVC-based caching schemes is testified.

On the torsion subgroups of the modular Jacobians

For any positive integer $N$, we prove that the rational torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$ agrees with its rational cuspidal subgroups up to a factor of $6N\prod_{p\mid N}(p^2-1)$. Moreover, for modular Jacobians of the form $J_0(DC)$ with $D$ a positive square-free integer and $C$ any positive divisor of $D$, we prove that the $ψ$-part of the torsion subgroup of $J_0(DC)$ agrees with the $ψ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup up to a factor of $6D\prod_{p\mid D}(p^2-1)$, where $ψ$ is any quadratic character of conductor dividing $C$.

Excitation of exciton-polariton vortices in pillar microcavities by a Gaussian beam

With coupled Gross-Piteavskii equations we study excitation of exciton-polariton vortices and antivortices in a pillar microcavity by a Gaussian pump beam. The structure of vortices and antivortices shows a strong dependence on the microcavity radius, pump geometry, and nonlinear exciton-exciton interaction. Due to the nonlinear interaction the strong Gaussian beam cannot excite more polariton vortices or antivortices with respect to the weak one. The calculation demonstrates that the weak Gaussian beam can excite vortex-antivortex pairs, vortices with high angular momentum, and superposition states of vortex and antivortex with high opposite angular momentum. The pump geometry for the Gaussian beam to excite these vortex structures are analyzed in detail, which holds a potential application for Sagnac interferometry and generating the optical beams with high angular momentum.

A charging method for electric vehicle using multi battery series mode

A charging method for electric vehicle using multi battery series mode which consisted of the following steps was introduced: the battery series is firstly charged at a constant power with a charging current of I1. When the terminal voltage over the battery series has reached the 1st threshold voltage, the charging current will reduce to I2 and the power remains constant. When the terminal voltage over the battery series has reached the 2nd threshold voltage, the charging current will reduce to I3 and the power remains constant (the 2nd threshold voltage is larger than 1st threshold voltage). When the terminal voltage over the battery series has reached the 3rd threshold voltage, which is the rated voltage of the battery series, the charging process is completed (3rd threshold voltage is larger than 2nd threshold voltage). Contents in this paper provide a charging method for electric vehicles using multi battery series mode with high charging efficiency and security level.

Defect Line Terahertz Quantum Cascade Laser

We present terahertz quantum cascade lasers operating at a defect mode of a photonic crystal bandgap. This class of devices exhibits single mode emission and low threshold current compared to standard metal-metal lasers. The mode selectivity is an intrinsic property of the chosen fabrication design. The lower lasing threshold effect, already reported in photonic crystal quantum cascade lasers, is further enhanced in the ultra-flat-dispersion defect line. The presented results pave the way for integrated circuitry operating in the terahertz regime and have important applications in the field of quantum cascade lasers, spectroscopy and microcavity lasers.

Low-energy Structural Dynamics of Ferroelectric Domain Walls in Hexagonal Rare-earth Manganites

Domain walls (DWs) in ferroic materials, across which the order parameter abruptly changes its orientation, can host emergent properties that are absent in the bulk domains. Using a broadband ($10^6-10^{10}$ Hz) scanning impedance microscope, we show that the electrical response of the interlocked antiphase boundaries and ferroelectric domain walls in hexagonal rare-earth manganites ($h-RMnO_3$) is dominated by the bound-charge oscillation rather than free-carrier conduction at the DWs. As a measure of the rate of energy dissipation, the effective conductivity of DWs on the (001) surfaces of $h-RMnO_3$ at GHz frequencies is drastically higher than that at dc, while the effect is absent on surfaces with in-plane polarized domains. First-principles and model calculations indicate that the frequency range and selection rules are consistent with the periodic sliding of the DW around its equilibrium position. This acoustic-wave-like mode, which is associated with the synchronized oscillation of local polarization and apical oxygen atoms, is localized perpendicular to the DW but free to propagate along the DW plane. Our results break the ground to understand structural DW dynamics and exploit new interfacial phenomena for novel devices.

Arithmetic of Eisenstein quotients

In this paper, we will study the arithmetic of the Eisenstein part of the modular Jacobians. In the first section, we introduce some general preliminaries of the arithmetic theory of modular curves that we will need later. In the second section, we give an example of modular abelian varieties due to Gross and study its properties in some details. In the third section, we define Eisenstein quotients of the modular Jacobians in general and give a criterion of the non-triviality of Heegner points on such Eisenstein quotients. The last two sections return to the concrete examples when the level of the modular Jacobian ia a prime or a square of a prime.

Thickness-dependent Dielectric Constant of Few-layer In2Se3 Nano-flakes

The dielectric constant or relative permittivity of a dielectric material, which describes how the net electric field in the medium is reduced with respect to the external field, is a parameter of critical importance for charging and screening in electronic devices. Such a fundamental material property is intimately related to not only the polarizability of individual atoms, but also the specific atomic arrangement in the crystal lattice. In this letter, we present both experimental and theoretical investigations on the dielectric constant of few-layer In2Se3 nano-flakes grown on mica substrates by van der Waals epitaxy. A nondestructive microwave impedance microscope is employed to simultaneously quantify the number of layers and local electrical properties. The measured dielectric constant increases monotonically as a function of the thickness and saturates to the bulk value at around 6 ~ 8 quintuple layers. The same trend of layer-dependent dielectric constant is also revealed by first-principle calculations. Our results of the dielectric response, being ubiquitously applicable to layered 2D semiconductors, are expected to be significant for this vibrant research field.

Distributed User Scheduling for MIMO-Y Channel

In this paper, distributed user scheduling schemes are proposed for the multi-user MIMO-Y channel, where three $N_{T}$-antenna users ($N_{T}=2N,\,3N$) are selected from three clusters to exchange information via an $N_{R}$-antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay ($N_{R}=3N$), and $N\geq1$ represents the number of data stream(s) of each unicast transmission within the MIMO-Y channel. The proposed schemes effectively harvest multi-user diversity (MuD) without the need of global channel state information (CSI) or centralized computations. In particular, a novel reference signal space (RSS) is proposed to enable the distributed scheduling for both cluster-wise (CS) and group-wise (GS) patterns. The minimum user-antenna (Min-UA) transmission with $N_{T}=2N$ is first considered. Next, we consider an equal number of relay and user antenna (ER-UA) transmission with ${N_{T}=3N}$, with the aim of reducing CSI overhead as compared to Min-UA. For ER-UA transmission, the achievable MuD orders of the proposed distributed scheduling schemes are analytically derived, which proves the superiority and optimality of the proposed RSS-based distributed scheduling. These results reveal some fundamental behaviors of MuD and the performance-complexity tradeoff of user scheduling schemes in the MIMO-Y channel.

Direct Imaging of Nanoscale Conductance Evolution in Ion-Gel-Gated Oxide Transistors

Electrostatic modification of functional materials by electrolytic gating has demonstrated a remarkably wide range of density modulation, a condition crucial for developing novel electronic phases in systems ranging from complex oxides to layered chalcogenides. Yet little is known microscopically when carriers are modulated in electrolyte-gated electric double-layer transistors (EDLTs) due to the technical challenge of imaging the buried electrolyte-semiconductor interface. Here, we demonstrate the real-space mapping of the channel conductance in ZnO EDLTs using a cryogenic microwave impedance microscope. A spin-coated ionic gel layer with typical thicknesses below 50 nm allows us to perform high resolution (on the order of 100 nm) sub-surface imaging, while maintaining the capability of inducing the metal-insulator transition under a gate bias. The microwave images vividly show the spatial evolution of channel conductance and its local fluctuations through the transition, as well as the uneven conductance distribution established by a large source-drain bias. The unique combination of ultra-thin ion-gel gating and microwave imaging offers a new opportunity to study the local transport and mesoscopic electronic properties in EDLTs.

Hot electron bolometer heterodyne receiver with a 4.7-THz quantum cascade laser as a local oscillator

We report on a heterodyne receiver designed to observe the astrophysically important neutral atomic oxygen [OI] line at 4.7448 THz. The local oscillator is a third-order distributed feedback Quantum Cascade Laser operating in continuous wave mode at 4.741 THz. A quasi-optical, superconducting NbN hot electron bolometer is used as the mixer. We recorded a double sideband receiver noise temperature (T^DSB_rec) of 815 K, which is ~7 times the quantum noise limit (hν/2k_B) and an Allan variance time of 15 s at an effective noise fluctuation bandwidth of 18 MHz. Heterodyne performance was confirmed by measuring a methanol line spectrum.
