Resolving continua of fractional excitations by spinon echo in THz 2D coherent spectroscopy

We show that the new technique of terahertz 2D coherent spectroscopy is capable of giving qualitatively new information about fractionalized spin systems. For the prototypical example of the transverse field Ising chain, we demonstrate theoretically that, despite the broad continuum of excitations in linear response, the 2D spectrum contains sharp features that are a coherent signature of a `spinon echo', which gives previously inaccessible information such as the lifetime of the two-spinon excited state. The effects of disorder and finite lifetime, which are practically indistinguishable in the linear optical or neutron response, manifest in dramatically different fashion in the 2D spectra. Our results may be directly applicable to model quasi-1D transverse field Ising chain systems such as CoNb$_2$O$_6$, but the concept can be applied to fractionalized spin systems in general.

Nonequilibrium selection of magnetic order in driven triangular XY antiferromagnet

We show that a weak periodic drive removes the accidental degeneracy in the ground state of the XY antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice in a uniform static magnetic field. The underlying mechanism involves adding a small periodically modulated component to the magnetic field, which influences finite-frequency modes to generate an effective potential for the accidental pseudo-Goldstone mode. This selection can be arranged to compete with the degeneracy lifting via the thermal order by disorder mechanism. This yields a non-equilibrium phase transition as the relative strength of the two mechanisms is tuned by varying temperature. This proposal may be amenable to experimental realization, in particular as applying the field is noninvasive, and no complex bath engineering is required.

Dynamics of Topological Excitations in a Model Quantum Spin Ice

We study the quantum spin dynamics of a frustrated XXZ model on a pyrochlore lattice by using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation and stochastic analytic continuation. In the low-temperature quantum spin ice regime, we observe signatures of coherent photon and spinon excitations in the dynamic spin structure factor. As the temperature rises to the classical spin ice regime, the photon disappears from the dynamic spin structure factor, whereas the dynamics of the spinon remain coherent in a broad temperature window. Our results provide experimentally relevant, quantitative information for the ongoing pursuit of quantum spin ice materials.

Control of effective free energy landscape in a frustrated magnet by a field pulse

Thermal fluctuations can lift the degeneracy of a ground state manifold, producing a free energy landscape without accidentally degenerate minima. In a process known as order by disorder, a subset of states incorporating symmetry-breaking may be selected. Here, we show that such a free energy landscape can be controlled in a non-equilibrium setting as the slow motion within the ground state manifold is governed by the fast modes out of it. For the paradigmatic case of the classical pyrochlore XY antiferromagnet, we show that a uniform magnetic field pulse can excite these fast modes to generate a tunable effective free energy landscape with minima at thermodynamically unstable portions of the ground state manifold.

Quantum spin liquid with 7 elementary particles

We present an exactly solvable model of a quantum spin liquid with Abelian anyons in d=2 spatial dimensions. With spins 1/2 on a triangular lattice and six-body interactions, our model has zero spin correlation length and localized elementary excitations like the toric codes of Kitaev and Wen. In contrast to those earlier models, it has more elementary particles---4 bosons and 3 fermions---and higher topological degeneracy of 64 on a torus. Elementary excitations are boson-fermion pairs that come in 12 distinct flavors. We use string operators to expose the topological nature of the model.

Color ice states, weathervane modes, and order by disorder in the bilinear-biquadratic pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We study the pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet with additional positive biquadratic interaction in the semiclassical limit. The classical ground state manifold of the model contains an extensively large family of non-coplanar spin states known as "color ice states". Starting from a color ice state, a subset of spins may rotate collectively at no energy cost. Such excitation may be viewed in this three-dimensional system as a "membrane-like" analog of the well-known weathervane modes in the classical kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We investigate the weathervane modes in detail and elucidate their physical properties. Furthermore, we study the order by disorder phenomenon in this model, focusing on the role of harmonic fluctuations. Our computationally-limited phase space search suggests that quantum fluctuations select three different states as the magnitude of the biquadratic interaction increases relative to the bilinear interaction, implying a sequence of phase transitions solely driven by fluctuations.

Phenomenological approach to hyperkagome spin liquid: gauge fields and spinons without slave particles

A number of experiments on the hyperkagome iridate, Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$, suggest existence of a gapless quantum spin liquid state at low temperature. Circumventing the slave particle approach commonly used in theoretical analyses of frustrated magnets, we provide a more intuitive, albeit more phenomenological, construction of a quantum spin liquid state for the hyperkagome Heisenberg model. An effective monomer-dimer model on the hyperkagome lattice is proposed a la Hao and Tchernyshyov's approach cultivated from the Husimi cactus model. Employing an arrow representation for the monomer-dimer model, we obtain a compact $U(1)$ gauge theory with a finite density of Fermionic spinons on the hyperoctagon lattice. The resulting theory and its mean field treatments lead to remarkable agreement with previous slave-particle construction of a quantum spin liquid state on the hyperkagome lattice. Our results offer novel insights on theoretical understanding of the emergence of spinon Fermi surfaces and useful predictions for future experiments.

Spinon walk in quantum spin ice

We study a minimal model for the dynamics of spinons in quantum spin ice. The model captures the essential strong coupling between the spinon and the disordered background spins. We demonstrate that the spinon motion can be mapped to a random walk with an entropy-induced memory in imaginary time. Our numerical simulation of the spinon walk indicates that the spinon propagates as a massive quasiparticle at low energy despite its strong coupling to the spin background at the microscopic energy scale. We discuss the experimental implications of our findings.

Quantum dimer model for the spin-1/2 kagome Z2 spin liquid

We revisit the description of the low-energy singlet sector of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on kagome in terms of an effective quantum dimer model. With the help of exact diagonalizations of appropriate finite-size clusters, we show that the embedding of a given process in its kagome environment leads to dramatic modifications of the amplitudes of the elementary loop processes, an effect not accessible to the standard approach based on the truncation of the Hamiltonian to the nearest-neighbour valence-bond basis. The resulting parameters are consistent with a Z$_2$ spin liquid rather than with a valence-bond crystal, in agreement with the last density matrix renormalization group results.

High-field spectroscopy of singlet-triplet transitions in the spin-dimer systems Sr3Cr2O8 and Ba3Cr2O8

Magnetic excitations in the isostructural spin-dimer systems Sr3Cr2O8 and Ba3Cr2O8 are probed by means of high-field electron spin resonance at sub-terahertz frequencies. Three types of magnetic modes were observed. One mode is gapless and corresponds to transitions within excited states, while two other sets of modes are gapped and correspond to transitions from the ground to the first excited states. The selection rules of the gapped modes are analyzed in terms of a dynamical Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, suggesting the presence of phonon-assisted effects in the low-temperature spin dynamics of Sr3Cr2O8 and Ba3Cr2O8

Phenomenological Z_2 lattice gauge theory of the spin-liquid state of the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We construct a phenomenological Z_2 lattice gauge theory to describe the spin-liquid state of the S=1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the sector with zero total spin. The model is a natural generalization of the Misguich-Serban-Pasquier Hamiltonian with added interactions that are strongly constrained by lattice symmetries. We are able to reproduce qualitatively many of the characteristic features observed in recent numerical studies. We also make connections to the previous works along similar lines.

Infrared phonons and specific heat in Ba3Cr2O8

We report on the phonon spectrum of Ba3Cr2O8 determined by infrared spectroscopy, and on specific heat measurements across the Jahn-Teller transition in magnetic fields up to 9 T. Phonon modes split below the Jahn-Teller transition, which occurs at T_{JT} = 70 K as detected by specific heat measurements. The field-dependent specific heat data is analyzed in terms of the contributions from lattice, magnetic and orbital degrees of freedom. In contrast to the isostructural compound Sr3Cr2O8 our analysis does not indicate the existence of orbital fluctuations below the Jahn-Teller transition in Ba3Cr2O8.

Quantum strings in quantum spin ice

We study quantum spin ice in an external magnetic field applied along a $<100>$ direction. When quantum spin fluctuations are weak, elementary excitations are quantum strings with monopoles at their ends manifested as multiple spin-wave branches in the dynamical structure factor. Strong quantum fluctuations make the string tension negative and give rise to the deconfinement of monopoles. We discuss our results in the light of recent neutron scattering experiments in $\mathrm{Yb_2Ti_2O_7}$

Destruction of valence-bond order in a $S=1/2$ sawtooth chain with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term

A small value of the spin gap in quantum antiferromagnets with strong frustration makes them susceptible to nominally small deviations from the ideal Heisenberg model. One of such perturbations, the anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, is an important perturbation for the $S=1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet, one of the current candidates for a quantum-disordered ground state. We study the influence of the DM term in a related one-dimensional system, the sawtooth chain that has valence-bond order in its ground state. Through a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we show that a relatively weak DM coupling, $0.115J$, is sufficient to destroy the valence-bond order, close the spin gap, and turn the system into a Luttinger liquid with algebraic spin correlations. A similar mechanism may be at work in the kagome antiferromagnet.

Theory of tunnelling into a multi-band superconductor: decoherence and interference

By an exact formulation of tunnelling into a multi-band superconductor in terms of Green's functions, we demonstrate that the multi-band feature of the iron-based superconductors can lead to novel interference between Andreev reflections and decoherence effect of quasi-particles to Andreev reflections in a tunnelling junction. These effects depend on the relative sign of the gaps for s-wave pairing, and the sign of the Fermi velocities also matters for tunnelling along the nodal direction of d-wave gaps. Experimental probe of such effects could determine both the pairing symmetry and the relative sign of the gaps on different bands.

Pairing symmetry and properties of iron-based high temperature superconductors

Pairing symmetry is important to indentify the pairing mechanism. The analysis becomes particularly timely and important for the newly discovered iron-based multi-orbital superconductors. From group theory point of view we classified all pairing matrices (in the orbital space) that carry irreducible representations of the system. The quasiparticle gap falls into three categories: full, nodal and gapless. The nodal-gap states show conventional Volovik effect even for on-site pairing. The gapless states are odd in orbital space, have a negative superfluid density and are therefore unstable. In connection to experiments we proposed possible pairing states and implications for the pairing mechanism.

Impurity resonance states in electron-doped high T_c superconductors

Two scenarios, i.e., the anisotropic s-wave pairing (the s-wave scenario) and the d-wave pairing coexisting with antiferromagnetism (the coexisting scenario) have been introduced to understand some of seemingly s-wave like behaviors in electron doped cuprates. We considered the electronic structure in the presence of a nonmagnetic impurity in the coexistence scenario. We found that even if the AF order opens a full gap in quasi-particle excitation spectra, the mid-gap resonant peaks in local density of states (LDoS) around an impurity can still be observed in the presence of a d-wave pairing gap. The features of the impurity states in the coexisting phase are markedly different from the pure AF or pure d-wave pairing phases, showing the unique role of the coexisting AF and d-wave pairing orders. On the other hand, it is known that in the pure s-wave case no mid-gap states can be induced by a nonmagnetic impurity. Therefore we proposed that the response to a nonmagnetic impurity can be used to differentiate the two scenarios.

Theory of high energy features in angle-resolved photo-emission spectra of hole-doped cuprates

The recent angle-resolved photoemission measurements performed up to binding energies of the order of 1eV reveals a very robust feature: the nodal quasi-particle dispersion breaks up around 0.3-0.4eV and reappears around 0.6-0.8eV. The intensity map in the energy-momentum space shows a waterfall like feature between these two energy scales. We argue and numerically demonstrate that these experimental features follow naturally from the strong correlation effects built in the familiar t-J model, and reflect the connection between the fermi level and the lower Hubbard band. The results were obtained by a mean field theory that effectively projects electrons by quantum interference between two bands of fermions instead of binding slave particles.
