Spectral approximation on the unit ball

Spectral approximation by polynomials on the unit ball is studied in the frame of the Sobolev spaces $W^{s}_p(\ball)$, $1<p<\infty$. The main results give sharp estimates on the order of approximation by polynomials in the Sobolev spaces and explicit construction of approximating polynomials. One major effort lies in understanding the structure of orthogonal polynomials with respect to an inner product of the Sobolev space $W_2^s(\ball)$. As an application, a direct and efficient spectral-Galerkin method based on our orthogonal polynomials is proposed for the second and the fourth order elliptic equations on the unit ball, its optimal error estimates are explicitly derived for both procedures in the Sobolev spaces and, finally, numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretic results.

Hahn, Jacobi, and Krawtchouck polynomials of several variables

Hahn polynomials of several variables can be defined by using the Jacobi polynomials on the simplex as a generating function. Starting from this connection, a number of properties for these two families of orthogonal polynomials are derived. It is shown that the Hahn polynomials appear as connecting coefficients between several families of orthogonal polynomials on the simplex. Closed-form formulas are derived for the reproducing kernels of the Hahn polynomials and Krawtchouck polynomials. As an application, the Poisson kernels for the Hahn polynomials and the Krawtchouck polynomials are shown to be nonnegative.

Complex versus real orthogonal polynomials of two variables

Orthogonal polynomials of two real variables can often be represented in complex variables. We explore the connection between the two types of representations and study the structural relations of complex orthogonal polynomials. The complex Hermite orthogonal polynomials and the disk polynomials are used as illustrating examples.

Minimal cubature rules on an unbounded domain

A family of minimal cubature rules is established on an unbounded domain, which is the first such family known on unbounded domains. The nodes of such cubature rules are common zeros of certain orthogonal polynomials on the unbounded domain, which are also constructed.

Weighted Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball

For the weight function $W_μ(x) = (1-|x|^2)^μ$, $μ> -1$, $λ> 0$ and $b_μ$ a normalizing constant, a family of mutually orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball with respect to the inner product $$ \la f,g \ra = {b_μ[\int_{\BB^d} f(x) g(x) W_μ(x) dx + λ\int_{\BB^d} \nabla f(x) \cdot \nabla g(x) W_μ(x) dx]} $$ are constructed in terms of spherical harmonics and a sequence of Sobolev orthog onal polynomials of one variable. The latter ones, hence, the orthogonal polynomials with respect to $\la \cdot,\cdot\ra$, can be generated through a recursive formula.

Discrete Fourier Analysis and Chebyshev Polynomials with $G_2$ Group

The discrete Fourier analysis on the $30^{\degree}$-$60^{\degree}$-$90^{\degree}$ triangle is deduced from the corresponding results on the regular hexagon by considering functions invariant under the group $G_2$, which leads to the definition of four families generalized Chebyshev polynomials. The study of these polynomials leads to a Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem that contains two parameters, whose solutions are analogues of the Jacobi polynomials. Under a concept of $m$-degree and by introducing a new ordering among monomials, these polynomials are shown to share properties of the ordinary orthogonal polynomials. In particular, their common zeros generate cubature rules of Gauss type.

Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on a simplex

The Jacobi polynomials on the simplex are orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $W_\bg(x) = x_1^{\g_1} ... x_d^{\g_d} (1- |x|)^{\g_{d+1}}$ when all $\g_i > -1$ and they are eigenfunctions of a second order partial differential operator $L_\bg$. The singular cases that some, or all, $\g_1,...,\g_{d+1}$ are -1 are studied in this paper. Firstly a complete basis of polynomials that are eigenfunctions of $L_\bg$ in each singular case is found. Secondly, these polynomials are shown to be orthogonal with respect to an inner product which is explicitly determined. This inner product involves derivatives of the functions, hence the name Sobolev orthogonal polynomials.

On positive cubature rules on the simplex and isometric embeddings

Positive cubature rules of degree 4 and 5 on the $d$-dimensional simplex are constructed and used to construct cubature rules of index 8 or degree 9 on the unit sphere. The latter ones lead to explicit isometric embedding among the classical Banach spaces. Among other things, our results include several explicit representations of $(x_1^2+...+ x_d^2)^t$ in terms of linear forms of degree $2t$ with rational coefficients for t=4 and 5.

Orthogonal polynomials and expansions for a family of weight functions in two variables

Orthogonal polynomials for a family of weight functions on $[-1,1]^2$, $$ \CW_{\a,\b,\g}(x,y) = |x+y|^{2\a+1} |x-y|^{2\b+1} (1-x^2)^\g(1-y^2)^{\g}, $$ are studied and shown to be related to the Koornwinder polynomials defined on the region bounded by two lines and a parabola. In the case of $\g = \pm 1/2$, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is given in terms of Jacobi polynomials and a closed formula for the reproducing kernel is obtained. The latter is used to study the convergence of orthogonal expansions for these weight functions.

Minimal Cubature rules and polynomial interpolation in two variables

Minimal cubature rules of degree $4n-1$ for the weight functions $$ W_{\a,\b,\pm \frac12}(x,y) = |x+y|^{2\a+1} |x-y|^{2\b+1} ((1-x^2)(1-y^2))^{\pm \frac12} $$ on $[-1,1]^2$ are constructed explicitly and are shown to be closed related to the Gaussian cubature rules in a domain bounded by two lines and a parabola. Lagrange interpolation polynomials on the nodes of these cubature rules are constructed and their Lebesgue constants are determined.

On Gauss-Lobatto integration on the triangle

A recent result in [2] on the non-existence of Gauss-Lobatto cubature rules on the triangle is strengthened by establishing a lower bound for the number of nodes of such rules. A method of constructing Lobatto type cubature rules on the triangle is given and used to construct several examples.

Polynomial Approximation in Sobolev Spaces on the Unit Sphere and the Unit Ball

This work is a continuation of the recent study by the authors on approximation theory over the sphere and the ball. The main results define new Sobolev spaces on these domains and study polynomial approximations for functions in these spaces, including simultaneous approximation by polynomials and relation between best approximation to a function and to its derivatives.

A Solvable Mixed Charge Ensemble on the Line: Global Results

We consider an ensemble of interacting charged particles on the line consisting of two species of particles with charge ratio 2 : 1 in the presence of the harmonic oscillator potential. The system is assumed to be at temperature corresponding to β= 1 and the sum of the charges is fixed. We investigate the distribution of the number as well as the spatial density of each species of particle in the limit as the total charge increases to \infty. These results will follow from the fact that the system of particles forms a Pfaffian point process. We produce the skew-orthogonal polynomials necessary to simplify the related matrix kernels.

Moduli of Smoothness and Approximation on the Unit Sphere and the Unit Ball

A new modulus of smoothness based on the Euler angles is introduced on the unit sphere and is shown to satisfy all the usual characteristic properties of moduli of smoothness, including direct and inverse theorem for the best approximation by polynomials and its equivalence to a $K$-functional, defined via partial derivatives in Euler angles. The set of results on the moduli on the sphere serves as a basis for defining new moduli of smoothness and their corresponding $K$-functionals on the unit ball, which are used to characterize the best approximation by polynomials on the ball.

Discrete Fourier analysis with lattices on planar domains

A discrete Fourier analysis associated with translation lattices is developed recently by the authors. It permits two lattices, one determining the integral domain and the other determining the family of exponential functions. Possible choices of lattices are discussed in the case of lattices that tile $\RR^2$ and several new results on cubature and interpolation by trigonometric, as well as algebraic, polynomials are obtained.

Decomposition of spaces of distributions induced by tensor product bases

Rapidly decaying kernels and frames (needlets) in the context of tensor product Jacobi polynomials are developed based on several constructions of multivariate $C^\infty$ cutoff functions. These tools are further employed to the development of the theory of weighted Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces on $[-1, 1]^d$. It is also shown how kernels induced by cross product bases can be constructed and utilized for the development of weighted spaces of distributions on products of multidimensional ball, cube, sphere or other domains.

OPED reconstruction algorithm for limited angle problem

The structure of the reconstruction algorithm OPED permits a natural way to generate additional data, while still preserving the essential feature of the algorithm. This provides a method for image reconstruction for limited angel problems. In stead of completing the set of data, the set of discrete sine transforms of the data is completed. This is achieved by solving systems of linear equations that have, upon choosing appropriate parameters, positive definite coefficient matrices. Numerical examples are presented.
