Decomposition of spaces of distributions induced by Hermite expansions

Decomposition systems with rapidly decaying elements (needlets) based on Hermite functions are introduced and explored. It is proved that the Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces on $\R^d$ induced by Hermite expansions can be characterized in terms of the needlet coefficients. It is also shown that the Hermite Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces are, in general, different from the respective classical spaces.

Maximal function and Multiplier Theorem for Weighted Space on the Unit Sphere

For a family of weight functions invariant under a finite reflection group, the boundedness of a maximal function on the unit sphere is established and used to prove a multiplier theorem for the orthogonal expansions with respect to the weight function on the unit sphere. Similar results are also established for the weighted space on the unit ball and on the standard simplex.

Fast OPED algorithm for reconstruction of images from Radon data

A fast implementation of the OPED algorithm, a reconstruction algorithm for Radon data introduced recently, is proposed and tested. The new implementation uses FFT for discrete sine transform and an interpolation step. The convergence of the fast implementation is proved under the condition that the function is mildly smooth. The numerical test shows that the accuracy of the OPED algorithm changes little when the fast implementation is used.

Decomposition of weighted Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces on the ball

Weighted Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces on the unit ball $B^d$ in $\Rd$ with weights $\W(x)= (1-|x|^2)^{μ-1/2}$, $μ\ge 0$, are introduced and explored. A decomposition scheme is developed in terms of almost exponentially localized polynomial elements (needlets) $\{ϕ_ξ\}$, $\{ψ_ξ\}$ and it is shown that the membership of a distribution to the weighted Triebel-Lizorkin or Besov spaces can be determined by the size of the needlet coefficients $\{\ip{f,ϕ_ξ}\}$ in appropriate sequence spaces.

Sobolev orthogonal polynomials defined via gradient on the unit ball

An explicit family of polynomials on the unit ball $B^d$ of $\RR^d$ is constructed, so that it is an orthonormal family with respect to the inner product $$ < f,g > = ρ\int_{B^d}\nabla f(x)\cdot \nabla g(x) dx + \CL (fg), $$ where $ρ>0$, $\nabla$ is the gradient, and $\CL(fg)$ is either the inner product on the sphere $S^{d-1}$ or $f(0)g(0)$.

Localized polynomial frames on the ball

Almost exponentially localized polynomial kernels are constructed on the unit ball $B^d$ in $\RR^d$ with weights %functions $W_μ(x)= (1-|x|^2)^{μ-1/2}$, $μ\ge 0$, by smoothing out the coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal projectors. These kernels are utilized to the design of cubature formulae on $B^d$ with respect to $W_μ(x)$ and to the construction of polynomial tight frames in $L^2(B^d, W_μ)$ (called needlets) whose elements have nearly exponential localization.

Jacobi decomposition of weighted Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces

The Littlewood-Paley theory is extended to weighted spaces of distributions on $[-1,1]$ with Jacobi weights $ \w(t)=(1-t)^α(1+t)^β. $ Almost exponentially localized polynomial elements (needlets) $\{ϕ_ξ\}$, $\{ψ_ξ\}$ are constructed and, in complete analogy with the classical case on $\RR^n$, it is shown that weighted Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces can be characterized by the size of the needlet coefficients $\{\ip{f,ϕ_ξ}\}$ in respective sequence spaces.

Bivariate Lagrange interpolation at the Padua points: the ideal theory approach

Padua points is a family of points on the square $[-1,1]^2$ given by explicit formulas that admits unique Lagrange interpolation by bivariate polynomials. The interpolation polynomials and cubature formulas based on the Padua points are studied from an ideal theoretic point of view, which leads to the discovery of a compact formula for the interpolation polynomials. The $L^p$ convergence of the interpolation polynomials is also studied.

Approximation and Reconstruction from Attenuated Radon Projections

Attenuated Radon projections with respect to the weight function $W_μ(x,y) = (1-x^2-y^2)^{μ-1/2}$ are shown to be closely related to the orthogonal expansion in two variables with respect to $W_μ$. This leads to an algorithm for reconstructing two dimensional functions (images) from attenuated Radon projections. Similar results are established for reconstructing functions on the sphere from projections described by integrals over circles on the sphere, and for reconstructing functions on the three-dimensional ball and cylinder domains.

A new approach to the reconstruction of images from Radon projections

A new approach is proposed for reconstruction of images from Radon projections. Based on Fourier expansions in orthogonal polynomials of two and three variables, instead of Fourier transforms, the approach provides a new algorithm for the computed tomography. The convergence of the algorithm is established under mild assumptions.

Localized polynomial frames on the interval with Jacobi weights

As is well known the kernel of the orthogonal projector onto the polynomials of degree $n$ in $L^2(w_{\a,\b}, [-1, 1])$ with $w_{\a,\b}(t) = (1-t)^\a(1+t)^\b$ can be written in terms of Jacobi polynomials. It is shown that if the coefficients in this kernel are smoothed out by sampling a $C^\infty$ function then the resulting function has almost exponential (faster than any polynomial) rate of decay away from the main diagonal. This result is used for the construction of tight polynomial frames for $L^2(w_{\a,\b})$ with elements having almost exponential localization.

Convolution operator and maximal function for Dunkl transform

For a family of weight functions, $h_κ$, invariant under a finite reflection group on $\RR^d$, analysis related to the Dunkl transform is carried out for the weighted $L^p$ spaces. Making use of the generalized translation operator and the weighted convolution, we study the summability of the inverse Dunkl transform, including as examples the Poisson integrals and the Bochner-Riesz means. We also define a maximal function and use it to prove the almost everywhere convergence.

The heat kernel transform for the Heisenberg group

The heat kernel transform H_t for the Heisenberg group is studied in detail. The main result shows that the image of H_t is a direct sum of two weighted Bergman spaces whose associated weighted functions are of oscillatory nature, i.e. attain positive and negative values.

Riesz transform and Riesz potentials for Dunkl transform

Analogous of Riesz potentials and Riesz transforms are defined and studied for the Dunkl transform associated with a family of weighted functions that are invariant under a reflection group. The $L^p$ boundedness of these operators is established in certain cases.

Second order difference equations and discrete orthogonal polynomials of two variables

The second order partial difference equation of two variables $ \CD u:= A_{1,1}(x) Δ_1 \nabla_1 u + A_{1,2}(x) Δ_1 \nabla_2 u + A_{2,1}(x) Δ_2 \nabla_1 u + A_{2,2}(x) Δ_2 \nabla_2 u & \qquad \qquad \qquad \qquad + B_1(x) Δ_1 u + B_2(x) Δ_2 u = λu, $ is studied to determine when it has orthogonal polynomials as solutions. We derive conditions on $\CD$ so that a weight function $W$ exists for which $W \CD u$ is self-adjoint and the difference equation has polynomial solutions which are orthogonal with respect to $W$. The solutions are essentially the classical discrete orthogonal polynomials of two variables.
