Microsaccade-inspired Event Camera for Robotics

Neuromorphic vision sensors or event cameras have made the visual perception of extremely low reaction time possible, opening new avenues for high-dynamic robotics applications. These event cameras' output is dependent on both motion and texture. However, the event camera fails to capture object edges that are parallel to the camera motion. This is a problem intrinsic to the sensor and therefore challenging to solve algorithmically. Human vision deals with perceptual fading using the active mechanism of small involuntary eye movements, the most prominent ones called microsaccades. By moving the eyes constantly and slightly during fixation, microsaccades can substantially maintain texture stability and persistence. Inspired by microsaccades, we designed an event-based perception system capable of simultaneously maintaining low reaction time and stable texture. In this design, a rotating wedge prism was mounted in front of the aperture of an event camera to redirect light and trigger events. The geometrical optics of the rotating wedge prism allows for algorithmic compensation of the additional rotational motion, resulting in a stable texture appearance and high informational output independent of external motion. The hardware device and software solution are integrated into a system, which we call Artificial MIcrosaccade-enhanced EVent camera (AMI-EV). Benchmark comparisons validate the superior data quality of AMI-EV recordings in scenarios where both standard cameras and event cameras fail to deliver. Various real-world experiments demonstrate the potential of the system to facilitate robotics perception both for low-level and high-level vision tasks.

Mapping Differential Protein-Protein Interaction Networks using Affinity Purification Mass Spectrometry

Proteins congregate into complexes to perform fundamental cellular functions. Phenotypic outcomes, in health and disease, are often mechanistically driven by the remodeling of protein complexes by protein coding mutations or cellular signaling changes in response to molecular cues. Here, we present an affinity purification mass spectrometry (APMS) proteomics protocol to quantify and visualize global changes in protein protein interaction (PPI) networks between pairwise conditions. We describe steps for expressing affinity tagged bait proteins in mammalian cells, identifying purified protein complexes, quantifying differential PPIs, and visualizing differential PPI networks. Specifically, this protocol details steps for designing affinity tagged bait gene constructs, transfection, affinity purification, mass spectrometry sample preparation, data acquisition, database search, data quality control, PPI confidence scoring, cross run normalization, statistical data analysis, and differential PPI visualization. Our protocol discusses caveats and limitations with applicability across cell types and biological areas.

JNI Global References Are Still Vulnerable: Attacks and Defenses

System services and resources in Android are accessed through IPC based mechanisms. Previous research has demonstrated that they are vulnerable to the denial-of-service attack (DoS attack). For instance, the JNI global reference (JGR), which is widely used by system services, can be exhausted to cause the system reboot (hence the name JGRE attack). Even though the Android team tries to fix the problem by enforcing security checks, we find that it is still possible to construct a JGR exhaustion DoS attack in the latest Android system. In this paper, we propose a new JGR exhaustion DoS attack, which is effective in different Android versions, including the latest one (i.e., Android 10). Specifically, we developed JGREAnalyzer, a tool that can systematically detect JGR vulnerable services APIs via a call graph analysis and a forwarding reachability analysis. We applied this tool to different Android versions and found multiple vulnerabilities. In particular, among 148 system services in Android 10, 12 of them have 21 vulnerabilities. Among them, 9 can be successfully exploited without any permissions. We further analyze the root cause of the vulnerabilities and propose a new defense to mitigate the JGRE attack by restricting resource consumption via global reference counting.

Backdoor Attacks and Defenses on Semantic-Symbol Reconstruction in Semantic Communications

Semantic communication is of crucial importance for the next-generation wireless communication networks. The existing works have developed semantic communication frameworks based on deep learning. However, systems powered by deep learning are vulnerable to threats such as backdoor attacks and adversarial attacks. This paper delves into backdoor attacks targeting deep learning-enabled semantic communication systems. Since current works on backdoor attacks are not tailored for semantic communication scenarios, a new backdoor attack paradigm on semantic symbols (BASS) is introduced, based on which the corresponding defense measures are designed. Specifically, a training framework is proposed to prevent BASS. Additionally, reverse engineering-based and pruning-based defense strategies are designed to protect against backdoor attacks in semantic communication. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of both the proposed attack paradigm and the defense strategies.

Sparse-Graph-Enabled Formation Planning for Large-Scale Aerial Swarms

The formation trajectory planning using complete graphs to model collaborative constraints becomes computationally intractable as the number of drones increases due to the curse of dimensionality. To tackle this issue, this paper presents a sparse graph construction method for formation planning to realize better efficiency-performance trade-off. Firstly, a sparsification mechanism for complete graphs is designed to ensure the global rigidity of sparsified graphs, which is a necessary condition for uniquely corresponding to a geometric shape. Secondly, a good sparse graph is constructed to preserve the main structural feature of complete graphs sufficiently. Since the graph-based formation constraint is described by Laplacian matrix, the sparse graph construction problem is equivalent to submatrix selection, which has combinatorial time complexity and needs a scoring metric. Via comparative simulations, the Max-Trace matrix-revealing metric shows the promising performance. The sparse graph is integrated into the formation planning. Simulation results with 72 drones in complex environments demonstrate that when preserving 30\% connection edges, our method has comparative formation error and recovery performance w.r.t. complete graphs. Meanwhile, the planning efficiency is improved by approximate an order of magnitude. Benchmark comparisons and ablation studies are conducted to fully validate the merits of our method.

Exploring Communication Technologies, Standards, and Challenges in Electrified Vehicle Charging

As public awareness of environmental protection continues to grow, the trend of integrating more electric vehicles (EVs) into the transportation sector is rising. Unlike conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, EVs can minimize carbon emissions and potentially achieve autonomous driving. However, several obstacles hinder the widespread adoption of EVs, such as their constrained driving range and the extended time required for charging. One alternative solution to address these challenges is implementing dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT), charging EVs in motion on the road. Moreover, charging stations with static wireless power transfer (SWPT) infrastructure can replace existing gas stations, enabling users to charge EVs in parking lots or at home. This paper surveys the communication infrastructure for static and dynamic wireless charging in electric vehicles. It encompasses all communication aspects involved in the wireless charging process. The architecture and communication requirements for static and dynamic wireless charging are presented separately. Additionally, a comprehensive comparison of existing communication standards is provided. The communication with the grid is also explored in detail. The survey gives attention to security and privacy issues arising during communications. In summary, the paper addresses the challenges and outlines upcoming trends in communication for EV wireless charging.

Controllable Relation Disentanglement for Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning

In this paper, we propose to tackle Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning (FSCIL) from a new perspective, i.e., relation disentanglement, which means enhancing FSCIL via disentangling spurious relation between categories. The challenge of disentangling spurious correlations lies in the poor controllability of FSCIL. On one hand, an FSCIL model is required to be trained in an incremental manner and thus it is very hard to directly control relationships between categories of different sessions. On the other hand, training samples per novel category are only in the few-shot setting, which increases the difficulty of alleviating spurious relation issues as well. To overcome this challenge, in this paper, we propose a new simple-yet-effective method, called ConTrollable Relation-disentangLed Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning (CTRL-FSCIL). Specifically, during the base session, we propose to anchor base category embeddings in feature space and construct disentanglement proxies to bridge gaps between the learning for category representations in different sessions, thereby making category relation controllable. During incremental learning, the parameters of the backbone network are frozen in order to relieve the negative impact of data scarcity. Moreover, a disentanglement loss is designed to effectively guide a relation disentanglement controller to disentangle spurious correlations between the embeddings encoded by the backbone. In this way, the spurious correlation issue in FSCIL can be suppressed. Extensive experiments on CIFAR-100, mini-ImageNet, and CUB-200 datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our CTRL-FSCIL method.

A quantitative second order Sobolev regularity for (inhmogeneous) normalized $p(\cdot)$-Laplace equations

Let $Ω$ be a domain of $\mathbb R^n$ with $n\ge 2$ and $p(\cdot)$ be a local Lipschitz funcion in $Ω$ with $1 1$ and $\sup_Up(x)<3+\frac2{n-2}$, one has $D^2u\in L^{2+δ}(U)$ locally with a quantitative upper bound, and also with a pointwise upper bound $$|D^2u|^2\le -C\sum_{1\leq i 0$ and $C\geq 1$ are independent of $u$. These extend the related results obtaind by Adamowicz-Hästö \cite{AH2010} when $n=2$ and $β=0$.

SmartCooper: Vehicular Collaborative Perception with Adaptive Fusion and Judger Mechanism

In recent years, autonomous driving has garnered significant attention due to its potential for improving road safety through collaborative perception among connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). However, time-varying channel variations in vehicular transmission environments demand dynamic allocation of communication resources. Moreover, in the context of collaborative perception, it is important to recognize that not all CAVs contribute valuable data, and some CAV data even have detrimental effects on collaborative perception. In this paper, we introduce SmartCooper, an adaptive collaborative perception framework that incorporates communication optimization and a judger mechanism to facilitate CAV data fusion. Our approach begins with optimizing the connectivity of vehicles while considering communication constraints. We then train a learnable encoder to dynamically adjust the compression ratio based on the channel state information (CSI). Subsequently, we devise a judger mechanism to filter the detrimental image data reconstructed by adaptive decoders. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm on the OpenCOOD platform. Our results demonstrate a substantial reduction in communication costs by 23.10\% compared to the non-judger scheme. Additionally, we achieve a significant improvement on the average precision of Intersection over Union (AP@IoU) by 7.15\% compared with state-of-the-art schemes.

Regularity from $p$-harmonic potentials to $\infty$-harmonic potentials in convex rings

The exploration of shape metamorphism, surface reconstruction, and image interpolation raises fundamental inquiries concerning the $C^1$ and higher-order regularity of $\infty$-harmonic potentials -- a specialized category of $\infty$-harmonic functions. Additionally, it prompts questions regarding their corresponding approximations using $p$-harmonic potentials. It is worth noting that establishing $C^1$ and higher-order regularity for $\infty$-harmonic functions remains a central concern within the realm of $\infty$-Laplace equations and $L^\infty$-variational problems. In this study, we investigate the regularity properties from $p$-harmonic potentials to $\infty$-harmonic potentials within arbitrary convex ring domains $Ω=Ω_0\backslash \overline Ω_1$ in $\mathbb R^n$. Here $Ω_0$ is a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb R^n$ and $\overlineΩ_1\subset Ω_0$ is a compact convex set. We prove the interior $C^1$ and some Sobolev regularity for $\infty$-harmonic potentials.

Integrated electro-optically tunable narrow-linewidth III-V laser

We demonstrate an integrated electro-optically tunable narrow-linewidth III-V laser with an output power of 738.8 μW and an intrinsic linewidth of 45.55 kHz at the C band. The laser cavity is constructed using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a tunable Sagnac loop reflector (TSLR) fabricated on thin film lithium niobate (TFLN). The combination of the FBG and the electro-optically tunable TSLR offers the advantages of single spatial mode, single-frequency, narrow-linewidth, and wide wavelength tunability for the electrically pumped hybrid integrated laser, which features a frequency tuning range of 20 GHz and a tuning efficiency of 0.8 GHz/V.

Prompt Pool based Class-Incremental Continual Learning for Dialog State Tracking

Continual learning is crucial for dialog state tracking (DST) in dialog systems, since requirements from users for new functionalities are often encountered. However, most of existing continual learning methods for DST require task identities during testing, which is a severe limit in real-world applications. In this paper, we aim to address continual learning of DST in the class-incremental scenario (namely the task identity is unknown in testing). Inspired by the recently emerging prompt tuning method that performs well on dialog systems, we propose to use the prompt pool method, where we maintain a pool of key-value paired prompts and select prompts from the pool according to the distance between the dialog history and the prompt keys. The proposed method can automatically identify tasks and select appropriate prompts during testing. We conduct experiments on Schema-Guided Dialog dataset (SGD) and another dataset collected from a real-world dialog application. Experiment results show that the prompt pool method achieves much higher joint goal accuracy than the baseline. After combining with a rehearsal buffer, the model performance can be further improved.

End-to-end Hyperspectral Image Change Detection Network Based on Band Selection

For hyperspectral image change detection (HSI-CD), one key challenge is to reduce band redundancy, as only a few bands are crucial for change detection while other bands may be adverse to it. However, most existing HSI-CD methods directly extract change feature from full-dimensional HSIs, suffering from a degradation of feature discrimination. To address this issue, we propose an end-to-end hyperspectral image change detection network with band selection (ECDBS), which effectively retains the critical bands to promote change detection. The main ingredients of the network are a deep learning based band selection module and cascading band-specific spatial attention (BSA) blocks. The band selection module can be seamlessly integrated with subsequent CD models for joint optimization and end-to-end reasoning, rather than as a step separate from change detection. The BSA block extracts features from each band using a tailored strategy. Unlike the typically used feature extraction strategy that uniformly processes all bands, the BSA blocks considers the differences in feature distributions among widely spaced bands, thereupon extracting more sufficient change feature. Experimental evaluations conducted on three widely used HSI-CD datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed method over other state-of-the-art techniques.

High-Fidelity and Freely Controllable Talking Head Video Generation

Talking head generation is to generate video based on a given source identity and target motion. However, current methods face several challenges that limit the quality and controllability of the generated videos. First, the generated face often has unexpected deformation and severe distortions. Second, the driving image does not explicitly disentangle movement-relevant information, such as poses and expressions, which restricts the manipulation of different attributes during generation. Third, the generated videos tend to have flickering artifacts due to the inconsistency of the extracted landmarks between adjacent frames. In this paper, we propose a novel model that produces high-fidelity talking head videos with free control over head pose and expression. Our method leverages both self-supervised learned landmarks and 3D face model-based landmarks to model the motion. We also introduce a novel motion-aware multi-scale feature alignment module to effectively transfer the motion without face distortion. Furthermore, we enhance the smoothness of the synthesized talking head videos with a feature context adaptation and propagation module. We evaluate our model on challenging datasets and demonstrate its state-of-the-art performance.

Hybrid Reinforcement Learning for Optimizing Pump Sustainability in Real-World Water Distribution Networks

This article addresses the pump-scheduling optimization problem to enhance real-time control of real-world water distribution networks (WDNs). Our primary objectives are to adhere to physical operational constraints while reducing energy consumption and operational costs. Traditional optimization techniques, such as evolution-based and genetic algorithms, often fall short due to their lack of convergence guarantees. Conversely, reinforcement learning (RL) stands out for its adaptability to uncertainties and reduced inference time, enabling real-time responsiveness. However, the effective implementation of RL is contingent on building accurate simulation models for WDNs, and prior applications have been limited by errors in simulation training data. These errors can potentially cause the RL agent to learn misleading patterns and actions and recommend suboptimal operational strategies. To overcome these challenges, we present an improved "hybrid RL" methodology. This method integrates the benefits of RL while anchoring it in historical data, which serves as a baseline to incrementally introduce optimal control recommendations. By leveraging operational data as a foundation for the agent's actions, we enhance the explainability of the agent's actions, foster more robust recommendations, and minimize error. Our findings demonstrate that the hybrid RL agent can significantly improve sustainability, operational efficiency, and dynamically adapt to emerging scenarios in real-world WDNs.

Dual Feature Augmentation Network for Generalized Zero-shot Learning

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) aims to infer novel classes without training samples by transferring knowledge from seen classes. Existing embedding-based approaches for ZSL typically employ attention mechanisms to locate attributes on an image. However, these methods often ignore the complex entanglement among different attributes' visual features in the embedding space. Additionally, these methods employ a direct attribute prediction scheme for classification, which does not account for the diversity of attributes in images of the same category. To address these issues, we propose a novel Dual Feature Augmentation Network (DFAN), which comprises two feature augmentation modules, one for visual features and the other for semantic features. The visual feature augmentation module explicitly learns attribute features and employs cosine distance to separate them, thus enhancing attribute representation. In the semantic feature augmentation module, we propose a bias learner to capture the offset that bridges the gap between actual and predicted attribute values from a dataset's perspective. Furthermore, we introduce two predictors to reconcile the conflicts between local and global features. Experimental results on three benchmarks demonstrate the marked advancement of our method compared to state-of-the-art approaches. Our code is available at https://github.com/Sion1/DFAN.

Singlet-triplet-state readout in silicon-metal-oxide-semiconductor double quantum dots

High-fidelity singlet-triplet state readout is essential for large-scale quantum computing. However, the widely used threshold method of comparing a mean value with the fixed threshold will limit the judgment accuracy, especially for the relaxed triplet state, under the restriction of relaxation time and signal-to-noise ratio. Here, we achieve an enhanced latching readout based on Pauli spin blockade in a Si-MOS double quantum dot device and demonstrate an average singlet-triplet state readout fidelity of 97.59% by the threshold method. We reveal the inherent deficiency of the threshold method for the relaxed triplet state classification and introduce machine learning as a relaxation-independent readout method to reduce the misjudgment. The readout fidelity for classifying the simulated single-shot traces can be improved to 99.67% by machine learning method, better than the threshold method of 97.54% which is consistent with the experimental result. This work indicates that machine learning method can be a strong potential candidate for alleviating the restrictions of stably achieving high-fidelity and high-accuracy singlet-triplet state readout in large-scale quantum computing.
