Assisted Inflation in Randall-Sundrum Scenario

We extend the Randall-Sundrum(RS) model by adding a fundamental scalar field in the bulk, then study the multi-field assisted inflationary solution on brane. We will show that this model satisfies not only the observation, but also provides a solution to hierarchy problem. Furthermore in comparison with the chaotic inflation model with a single field in four space-time dimension, the parameters in our model required for a successful inflation are natural.

Holography and Brane Cosmology in Domain Wall Backgrounds

We consider a class of domain-wall black hole solutions in the dilaton gravity with a Liouville-type dilaton potential. Using the surface counterterm approach we calculate the stress-energy tensor of quantum field theory (QFT) corresponding to the domain-wall black hole in the domain-wall/QFT correspondence. A brane universe is investigated in the domain-wall black hole background. When the tension term of the brane is equal to the surface counterterm, we find that the equation of motion of the brane can be mapped to the standard form of FRW equations, but with a varying gravitational constant on the brane. A Cardy-Verlinde-like formula is found, which relates the entropy density of the QFT to its energy density. At the moment when the brane crosses the black hole horizon of the background, the Cardy-Verlinde-like formula coincides with the Friedmann equation of the brane universe, and the Hubble entropy bound is saturated by the entropy of domain-wall black holes.

Gravitational Effects of Rotating Bodies

We study two type effects of gravitational field on mechanical gyroscopes (i.e. rotating extended bodies). The first depends on special relativity and equivalence principle. The second is related to the coupling (i.e. a new force) between the spins of mechanical gyroscopes, which would violate the equivalent principle. In order to give a theoretical prediction to the second we suggest a spin-spin coupling model for two mechanical gyroscopes. An upper limit on the coupling strength is then determined by using the observed perihelion precession of the planet's orbits in solar system. We also give predictions violating the equivalence principle for free-fall gyroscopes .

On Stability Of The Crystal Universe Models

We generalize the Goldberger-Wise mechanism and study the stability of the Crystal Universe models. We show that the model can be stabilized, however for configurations of Crystal Universe in the absence of fine-tuning, brane crystals are not equidistant, i.e. a $"-+"$ pair is far away from adjacent $"-+"$ pair, except for the fixed points of the orbifold, which differs from the assumptions taken in the literature.

Poynting vector, energy density and energy velocity in anomalous dispersion medium

The Poynting vector, energy density and energy velocity of light pulses propagating in anomalous dispersion medium (used in WKD-like experiments) are calculated. Results show that a negative energy density in the medium propagates along opposite of incident direction with such a velocity similar to the negative group velocity while the direction of the Poynting vector is positive. In other words, one might say that a positive energy density in the medium would propagate along the positive direction with a speed having approximately the absolute valueof the group velocity. We further point out that neither energy velocity nor group velocity is a good concept to describe the propagation process of light pulse inside the medium in WKD experiment owing to the strong accumulation and dissipation effects.

Faint field galaxies: an explanation of the faint blue excess using number evolution models

Pure luminosity evolution models for galaxies provide an unacceptable fit to the redshifts and colors of faint galaxies. In this paper we demonstrate, using HST morphological number counts derived both from the $I_{814}$-band of WFPC2 in the Medium Deep Survey (MDS) and the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) and from the $H_{1.6}$-band of NICMOS, and ground-based spectroscopic data of the Hawaii Deep Field and the Canada-France Redshift Survey, that number evolution is necessary for galaxies, regardless of whether the cosmic geometry is flat, open, or $Λ$-dominated. Furthermore, we show that the number evolution is small at redshifts of z<1, but large at z>1, and that this conclusion is valid for all the three cosmological models under consideration. If the universe is open or $Λ$-dominated, the models, which are subject to the constraint of the conservation of the comoving mass density of galaxies, naturally predict a population of star-forming galaxies with the redshift distribution peaking at $z=2\sim3$, which seems to be consistent with the recent findings from Lyman-break photometric selection techniques. If the cosmological model is flat, however, the conservation of the comoving mass density is invalid. Hence, in order to account for the steep slope of B-band number counts at faint magnitudes in the flat universe, such a star-forming galaxy population has to be introduced ad hoc into the modelling alongside the merger assumption.

Has superluminal light propagation been observed?

It says in the report$^1$ by Wang et al. that a negative group velocity $u=-c/310$ is obtained and that a pulse advancement shift 62-ns is measured. The authors claim that the negative group velocity is associated with superluminal light propagation and that the pulse advancement is not at odds with causality or special relativity. However, it is shown here that their conclusions above are not true. Furthermore, I give some suggestion concerning a re-definition of group-velocity and a new explanation in special relativity of causality.

Gravitational Lensing Effects of Fermion-Fermion Stars: I. Strong Field Case

We investigate a two-component model for gravitational lenses, i.e., the fermion-fermion star as a dark matter self-gravitating system made from two kinds of fermions with different masses. We calculate the deflection angles varying from arcseconds to even degrees. There is one Einstein ring. In particular, we find three radial critical curves for radial magnifications and four or five images of a point source. These are different from the case of the one-component model such as the fermion stars and boson stars. This is due to the fermion-fermion star being a two-component concentric sphere. Our results suggest that any possible observations of the number of images more than 3 could imply a polytropic distribution of the mass inside the lens in the universe.

Questions on pure luminosity evolution for ellipticals

The explanation for the existence of an excess population of faint blue galaxies (FBGs) has been a mystery for nearly two decades, and remains one of the grand astronomical issues to date. Existing models cannot explain all of the observational data such as galaxy number counts in the optical and infrared passbands and the redshift distributions of galaxies. Here, by modelling the morphological number counts derived from the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as the number counts in optical and infrared passbands, and the redshift and color distributions of galaxies obtained from ground-based observations, we show that the `FBG problem' cannot be resolved if elliptical galaxies are assumed to have formed in an instantaneous burst of star formation at high redshift with no subsequent star formation events, which is just the conventional scenario for formation and evolution of ellipticals. There exist great discrepancies between the observed $B-K$ color distribution and the predicted distribution for ellipticals by such a pure luminosity evolution (PLE) model in the context of the conventional scenario. Neither can the mild evolution (i.e., the star formation events have lasted for a longer time than those of the instantaneous burst and passive evolution since the formation of galaxies) for ellipticals be accepted in the context of PLE assumption. The introduction of dust extinction also cannot save the PLE models. This conclusion holds for each of the three cosmological models under consideration: flat, open and $Λ$-dominated. Hence, our investigation suggests that PLE assumption for elliptical galaxies is questionable, and number evolution may be essential for ellipticals.

Modelling the number counts of early-type galaxies by pure luminosity evolution

In this paper, we explore the plausible luminosity evolution of early-type galaxies in different cosmological models by constructing a set of pure luminosity evolution (PLE) models via the choices of the star formation rate (SFR) parameters and formation redshift $z_f$ of galaxies, with the observational constraints derived from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) morphological number counts for elliptical and S0 galaxies of the Medium Deep Survey (MDS) and the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). We find that the number counts of early-type galaxies can be explained by the pure luminosity evolution models, without invoking exotic scenarios such as merging or introducing an additional population. But the evolution should be nearly passive, with a high $z_f$ assumed. The conclusion is valid in all of the three cosmological models we adopted in this paper. We also present the redshift distributions for three bins of observed magnitudes in F814w pass-band, to show at which redshift are the objects that dominate the counts at a given magnitude. The predictions of the redshift distribution of $22.5<b_j<24.0$ are also presented for comparison with future data.

Critical behavior in 2+1 dimensional black holes

The critical behavior and phase transition in the 2+1 dimensional Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ) black holes are discussed. By calculating the equilibrium thermodynamic fluctuations in the microcanonical ensemble, canonical ensemble, and grand canonical ensemble, respectively, we find that the extremal spinning BTZ black hole is a critical point, some critical exponents satisfy the scaling laws of the ``first kind'', and the scaling laws related to the correlation length suggest that the effective spatial dimension of extremal black holes is one, which is in agreement with the argument that the extremal black holes are the Bogomol'nyi saturated string states. In addition, we find that the massless BTZ black hole is a critical point of spinless BTZ black holes.

Black plane solutions in four dimensional spacetimes

The static, plane symmetric solutions and cylindrically symmetric solutions of Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant are investigated. These black configurations are asymptotically anti-de Sitter not only in the transverse directions, but also in the membrane or string directions. Their causal structure is similar to that of Reissner-Nordström black holes, but their Hawking temperature goes with $M^{1/3}$, where $M$ is the ADM mass density. We also discuss the static plane solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with a Liouville-type dilaton potential. The presence of the dilaton field changes drastically the structure of solutions. They are asymptotically ``anti-de Sitter'' or ``de Sitter'' depending on the parameters in the theory.
