Experimental Demonstration of Controllable PT and anti-PT Coupling in a non-Hermitian Metamaterial

Non-Hermiticity has recently emerged as a rapidly developing field due to its exotic characteristics related to open systems, where the dissipation plays a critical role. In the presence of balanced energy gain and loss with environment, the system exhibits parity-time (PT) symmetry, meanwhile as the conjugate counterpart, anti-PT symmetry can be achieved with dissipative coupling within the system. Here, we demonstrate the coherence of complex dissipative coupling can control the transition between PT and anti-PT symmetry in an electromagnetic metamaterial. Notably, the achievement of the anti-PT symmetric phase is independent of variations in dissipation. Furthermore, we observe phase transitions as the system crosses exceptional points in both anti-PT and PT symmetric metamaterial configurations, achieved by manipulating the frequency and dissipation of resonators. This work provides a promising metamaterial design for broader exploration of non-Hermitian physics and practical application with controllable Hamiltonian.

Highly degenerate photonic flat bands arising from complete graph configurations

Inspired by complete graph theory, we demonstrate that a metallic claw "meta-atom" structure can carry a high number of nearly degenerate resonant modes. A photonic meta-crystal composing of a lattice of such meta-atoms exhibits a large number of flat bands that are squeezed into a narrow frequency window, and these flat bands can be designed to locate in a wide complete 3D bandgap. The degeneracy dimension (Nf) of the flat bands is determined by the number of branches (Nb) of the metallic claw with Nf=Nb-3, which is geometrically related to the complete graph theory. Different from those flat bands emerging from special lattice arrangements (e.g., Kagome lattice), the isolated flat bands here are insensitive to lattice perturbations. The proposed mechanism offers a new platform for realizing various dispersion-less phenomena and a new paradigm to realize high density of states and spectra compressing.

Controlling the toroidal excitations in metamaterials for high-Q response

The excitation of toroidal multipoles in metamaterials was investigated for high-Q response at a subwavelength scale. In this study, we explored the optimization of toroidal excitations in a planar metamaterial comprised of asymmetric split ring resonators (ASRRs). It was found that the scattering power of toroidal dipole can be remarkably strengthened by adjusting the characteristic parameter of ASRRs: asymmetric factor. Interestingly, the improvement in toroidal excitation accompanies increment on the Q-factor of the toroidal metamaterial; it is shown that both the scattering power of toroidal dipole and the Q-factor were increased more than one order by changing the asymmetric factor of ASRRs. The optimization in excitation of toroidal multipole provide opportunity to further increase the Q-factor of metamaterial and boost light-matter interactions at the subwavelength scale for potential applications in low-power nonlinear processing, and sensitive photonic applications.

A metamaterial modulator based on electrically controllable electromagnetically induced transparency

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is a promising technology for the enhancement of light-matter interactions, and recent demonstrations of the quantum EIT realized in artificial micro-structured medium have remarkably reduced the extreme requirement for experimental observation of EIT spectrum. In this paper, we propose to electrically control the EIT spectrum in a metamaterial for an electromagnetic modulator. A diode acting as a tunable resistor is loaded in the gap of two paired wires to inductively tune the magnetic resonance, which induces remarkable modulation on the EIT spectrum through the metamaterial sample. The experimental measurements confirmed that the prediction of electromagnetic modulation in three narrow bands on the EIT spectrum, and a modulation contrast of up to 31 dB was achieved on the transmission through the metamaterial. Our results may facilitate the study on active/dynamical technology in translational metamaterials, which connect extraordinary manipulations on the flow of light in metamaterials, e.g., the exotic EIT, and practical applications in industry.

Tunable mid-infrared coherent perfect absorption in a graphene meta-surface

We exploited graphene nanoribbons based meta-surface to realize coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in the mid-infrared regime. It was shown that quasi-CPA frequencies, at which CPA can be demonstrated with proper phase modulations, exist for the graphene meta-surface with strong resonant behaviors. The CPA can be tuned substantially by merging the geometric design of the meta-surface and the electrical tunability of graphene. Furthermore, we found that the graphene nanoribbon meta-surface based CPA is realizable with experimental graphene data. The findings of CPA with graphene meta-surface can be generalized for potential applications in optical detections and signal processing with two-dimensional optoelectronic materials.

Dynamically tunable Fano resonance in periodically asymmetric graphene nanodisk pair

We present a dynamically frequency tunable Fano resonance planar device composed of periodically asymmetric graphene nanodisk pair for the mid-infrared region. There are two kinds of modes in this structure, that is, the symmetric mode and the antisymmetric mode. The resonance coupling between the symmetric and antisymmetric modes creates a classical Fano resonance. Both of the Fano resonance amplitude and frequency of the structure can be dynamically controlled by varying the Fermi energy of graphene. Resonance transition in the structure is studied to reveal the physical mechanism behind the dynamically tunable Fano resonance. The features of the Fano resonant graphene nanostructures should have promising applications in tunable THz filters, switches, and modulators.

Tunable terahertz coherent perfect absorption in a monolayer graphene

Coherent perfect absorber (CPA) was proposed as the time-reversed counterpart to laser: a resonator containing lossy medium instead of gain medium can absorb the coherent optical fields completely. Here, we exploit a monolayer graphene to realize the CPA in a non-resonant manner. It is found that quasi-CPA point exists in the terahertz regime for suspending monolayer graphene, and the CPA can be implemented with the assistant of proper phase modulation among two incident beams at the quasi-CPA frequencies. The graphene based CPA is found of broadband angular selectivity: CPA point splits into two frequency bands for the orthogonal $s$ and $p$ polarizations at oblique incidence, and the two bands cover a wide frequency range starting from zero frequency. Furthermore, the coherent absorption can be tuned substantially by varying the gate-controlled Fermi energy. The findings of CPA with non-resonant graphene sheet can be generalized for potential applications in terahertz/infrared detections and signal processing with two-dimensional optoelectronic materials.

Enhancing infrared extinction and absorption in a monolayer graphene sheet by harvesting the electric dipolar mode of split ring resonators

Optical extinction and absorption enhancement in the infrared range of a monolayer graphene sheet by patterning split ring resonators (SRRs) is studied. It is found that the electric mode is stronger in enhancing infrared extinction and absorption compared to the magnetic mode and other higher-order modes. We improve the infrared extinction of the SRR graphene sheet by increasing the graphene area ratio in the SRR unit cell design. With the increase of the graphene area ratio, the radiation ability of the electric dipolar mode and dissipation of graphene compete for a maximum infrared absorption of about 50%. The findings on enhancing infrared extinction and absorption of graphene sheet by harvesting the electric dipolar mode may have potential applications in terahertz and infrared detection and modulation for graphene photonics and optoelectronics.

Photonic band gap of a graphene-embedded quarter-wave stack

Here, we present a mechanism for tailoring the photonic band structure of a quarter-wave stack without changing its physical periods by embedding conductive sheets. Graphene is utilized and studied as a realistic, two-dimensional conductive sheet. In a graphene-embedded quarter-wave stack, the synergic actions of Bragg scattering and graphene conductance contributions open photonic gaps at the center of the reduced Brillouin zone, that nonexistent in conventional quarter-wave stacks. Such photonic gaps show giant, loss-independent density of optical states at the fixed lower-gap-edges, of even-multiple characteristic frequency of the quarter-wave stack. The novel conductive sheets induced photonic gaps provide a new platform for the enhancement of light-matter interactions.

Gaussian Beam Collimation via Transformation Media

Conventional method for Gaussian beam collimation is to expand the beam waist to achieve a smaller divergence angle. Recent transformation optics offers an unconventional path to control the electromagnetic field. In this paper we show that a Gaussian beam can be converted into a plane wave-like beam by transformation media within the scale of several wavelengths. Design details and full-wave simulation results via finite element method are provided.

Planar Metamaterial with Toroidal Moment

We observe toroidal response from a planar metamaterial comprised of asymmetric split ring resonators (ASRRs). It is showed that a toroidal-molecule can be constructed through rational arrangement of planar ASRRs as meta-atoms via manipulating structural symmetry of the meta-atoms. Field maps clearly indicate that the toroidal resonance paves new electromagnetic confinement style in a subwavelength scale. Planar scheme of manipulating the coupling among the ASRRs may stimulate research in optical region involving toroidal multipoles. Toroidal geometry together with the Fano resonance made high-Q response will have enormous potential applications in low-threshold lasing, cavity quantum electrodynamics and nonlinear processing.

Broadband enhanced transmission through the stacked metallic multi-layers perforated with coaxial annular apertures

This paper theoretically and experimentally presents a first report on broadband enhanced transmission through stacked metallic multi-layers perforated with coaxial annular apertures (CAAs). Different from previous studies on extraordinary transmission that occurs at a single frequency, the enhanced transmission of our system with two or three metallic layers can span a wide frequency range with a bandwidth about 60% of the central frequency. The phenomena arise from the excitation and hybridization of guided resonance modes in CAAs among different layers. Measured transmission spectra are in good agreement with calculations semi-analytically resolved by modal expansion method.

Subwavelength electromagnetic diode: one-way response of cascading nonlinear meta-atoms

We propose a scheme for realizing subwavelength electromagnetic diode by employing cascading nonlinear meta-atoms. One-way response is demonstrated on a microwave transmission line comprising of three metallic ring resonators acting as meta-atoms and a varactor as the nonlinear medium inclusion. Experiments show that our implementation can operate simultaneously as forward diode and backward diode at different frequencies. A transmission contrast of up to 14.7dB was achieved between forward and backward transmission. Subwavelength size of our diode should be useful for miniaturization of integrated optical nanocircuits.

An ultra-thin waveguide twist constructed using fish-scale metallic wires

This study theoretically and experimentally investigates the transmission properties of a metamaterial slab comprised of two layers of metallic fish-scale structure arrays and a sandwiched dielectric layer. Calculations show that the asymmetric transmission can be tuned by varying the slab thickness, due to evanescent interlayer coupling. The spatial evolution of the local field inside the structure indicates that the slab functions as a perfect polarization transformer at certain frequencies in the manner of a waveguide twist. Measured transmission spectra are in good agreement with calculated results when material dissipation is considered.

We demonstrate a scheme to utilize the stacked fishnet metamaterial for all-angle negative refraction and subwavelength imaging within a wide frequency range starting from zero frequency. The theoretical predictions are verified by the finite-difference-in-time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulations. The phenomena come from the negative evanescent coupling between the adjacent slab waveguides through the breathing air holes perforated on metal layers.
