Topological classification of Higher-order topological phases with nested band inversion surfaces

Higher-order topological phases (HOTPs) hold gapped bulk bands and topological boundary states localized in boundaries with codimension higher than one. In this paper, we provide a unified construction and topological characterization of HOTPs for the full Altland-Zirnbauer tenfold symmetry classes, based on a method known as nested band inversion surfaces (BISs). Specifically, HOTPs built on this method are decomposed into a series of subsystems, and higher-order topological boundary states emerges from the interplay of their first-order topology. Our analysis begins with a general discussion of HOTPs in continuous Hamiltonians for each symmetry class, then moves on to several lattice examples illustrating the topological characterization based on the nested-BIS method. Despite the example minimal models possessing several spatial symmetries, our method does not rely on any spatial symmetry, and can be easily extended into arbitrary orders of topology in dimensions. Furthermore, we extend our discussion to systems with asymmetric boundary states induced by two different mechanisms, namely, crossed BISs that break a $\mathcal{C}_4$ rotation symmetry, and non-Clifford operators that break certain chiral-mirror symmetries of the minimal models.

Nonclassical correlated optical multistability at low photon level for cavity electromagnetically induced transparency

We study the nonequilibrium dynamic behaviors in a driven-dissipative single-atom cavity electromagnetically induced transparency. The optical bistability and multistability beyond a Kerr nonlinearity are observed utilizing the optical Stark shift induced strong nonlinearity. We show that the nonequilibrium dynamical phase transition between bistability and multistability is highly tunable by the system parameters in a large parameter region. The first-order dissipative optical bistability (multistability) always corresponds to the photon-bunching quantum statistics, which indicates that the quantum fluctuations and correlations play important roles in nonequilibrium dynamics.Interestingly, bistability and multistability with photon-bunching quantum statistics occurring at extremely low steady-state cavity photon number are observed, even under a very strong cavity driven field. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the unique cavity steady-state solution of the full quantum calculation is excellently consistent with the lowest solution based on the semiclassical mean-field approach in bistability and multistability regimes when the cavity photon number is much less than unity, albeit these nonclassical quantum states should possess strong quantum fluctuations in this parameter regime. Our results pave the way to exploring nonclassical correlated optical multistability in quantum regime, which may bring exciting opportunities for potential applications from quantum information processing to quantum metrology.

Tunable symmetry-protected higher-order topological states with fermionic atoms in bilayer optical lattices

Higher-order topological states that possess gapped bulk energy bands and exotic topologically protected boundary states with at least two dimension lower than the bulk have significantly opened a new perspective for understanding of topological quantum matters. Here, we propose to generate two-dimensional topological boundary states for implementing synthetic magnetic flux of ultracold atoms trapped in bilayer optical lattices, which includes Chern insulator, Dirac semimetals, and second-order topological phase (SOTP) by the interplay of the two-photon detuning and effective Zeeman shift. These observed topological phases can be well characterized by the energy gap of bulk, Wilson loop spectra, and the spin textures at the higher symmetric points of system. We show that the SOTP exhibits a pair of $0$D boundary states. While the phases of Dirac semimetals and Chern insulator support the conventional $1$D boundary states due to the principle of bulk-boundary correspondence. Strikingly, the emerged boundary states for Dirac semimetals and SOTP are topologically protected by $\cal P T$-symmetry and chiral-mirror symmetry ($\mathcal{\widetilde{M}}_α$), respectively. In particular, the location of $0$D corner states for SOTP which are associated with existing $\mathcal{\widetilde{M}}_α$-symmetry can be highly manipulated by tuning magnetic flux. Our scheme herein provides a platform for emerging exotic topological boundary states, which may facilitate the study of higher-order topological phases in ultracold atomic gases.

Strong single-photon to two-photon bundles emission in spin-1 Jaynes-Cummings model

The realization of high-quality special nonclassical states beyond strong single atom-cavity coupling regime is a fundamental element in quantum information science. Here, we study the nonclassical photon emission in a single spin-1 atom coupled to an optical cavity with constructing a spin-1 Jaynes-Cummings model. By tuning quadratic Zeeman shift, the energy-spectrum anharmonicity can be significantly enhanced with respect to the dressed-state splitting of well-resolved n-photon resonance largely increased. The photon emission exhibit high-quality single photon and two-photon bundles properties with large photon numbers in the cavity and atom driven cases, respectively. More interestingly, nonclassical optical switching from strong single-photon blockade to two-photon bundles and super-Poissonian photon emission is achieved and highly controllable by light-cavity detuning in the presence of both atom and cavity driven fields. Our proposal not only open up a new avenue for generating high-quality n-photon sources but also provide versatile applications in quantum networks and quantum metrology.

Unpaired topological triply degenerate point for spin-tensor-momentum-coupled ultracold atoms

The realization of triply degenerate points (TDPs) with exotic fermionic excitations has opened a new perspective for the understanding of our nature. Here we explore the coexistence of single unpaired TDP and multiple twofold Weyl points (WPs) and propose an experimental scheme with ultracold pseudospin-1 atomic gases trapped in optical lattices. We show that the predicted single unpaired TDP emerged by the interplay of quadratic spin-vector- and spin-tensor-momentum-coupling could possess a topological nontrivial middle band. This exotic TDP with mirror symmetry breaking is essential different from the recently observed TDPs that must appear in pairs due to the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem and host the topological trivial middle band. Strikingly, the topologically protected Fermi-arc states directly connect the unpaired TDP with additional WPs, in contrast to the conventional Fermi-arc states that connect the same degeneracies of band degenerate points with opposite chirality. Furthermore, the different types of TDPs with unique linking structure of Fermi arcs can be readily distinguished by measuring spin texture along high-symmetry lines of the system. Our scheme provides a platform for emerging new fermions with exotic physical phenomena and versatile device applications.

Nonclassical correlated deterministic single-photon pairs for a trapped atom in bimodal cavities

Single photons and single-photon pairs, inherently nonclassical in their nature, are fundamental elements of quantum sciences and technologies. Here, we propose to realize the nonclassical correlated deterministic photon pairs at the single-photon level for a single atom trapped in bimodal cavities. It is shown that the photon emissions for bimodal cavities exhibit a high single photon purity and relatively large intracavity photon numbers, which are ascribed to the combination of optical Stark shift enhanced energy-spectrum anharmonicity and quantum interference suppressed two-photon excitation. Our scheme generates photon-photon pairs with strong photon blockade for cavity modes via constructing a highly tunable cavity-enhanced deterministic parametric down-conversion process. Furthermore, we show that the cross-correlation function between the two cavity modes vastly violates the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality of the classical boundary, which unambiguously demonstrates the nonclassicality of the single-photon pairs. Our result reveals a prominent strategy to generate the high-quality two-mode single-photon sources with strong nonclassical correlation, which could provide versatile applications in distribution of quantum networks, long distance quantum communication, and fundamental tests of quantum physics.

Tunable Photon blockade with single atom in a cavity under electromagnetically induced transparency

We present an experimental proposal to achieve a strong photon blockade by employing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with single alkaline-earth-metal atom trapped in an optical cavity. In the presence of optical Stark shift, both second-order correlation function and cavity transmission exhibit asymmetric structures between the red and blue sidebands of the cavity. For a weak control field, the photon quantum statistics for the coherent transparency window (i.e. atomic quasi-dark state resonance) are insensitive to the Stark shift, which should also be immune to the spontaneous emission of the excited state by taking advantage of the intrinsic dark-state polariton of EIT. Interestingly, by exploiting the interplay between Stark shift and control field, the strong photon blockade at atomic quasi-dark state resonance has an optimal second-order correlation function $g^{(2)}(0)\sim10^{-4}$ and a high cavity transmission simultaneously. The underlying physical mechanism is ascribed to the Stark shift enhanced spectrum anharmonicity and the EIT hosted strong nonlinearity with loss-insensitive atomic quasi-dark state resonance, which is essentially different from the conventional proposal with emerging Kerr nonlinearity in cavity-EIT. Our results reveal a new strategy to realize high-quality single photon sources, which could open up a new avenue for engineering nonclassical quantum states in cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Motional $N$-phonon Bundle States of A Trapped Atom with Clock Transitions

Quantum manipulation of individual phonons could offer new resources for studying fundamental physics and creating an innovative platform in quantum information science. Here, we propose to generate quantum states of strongly correlated phonon bundles associated with the motion of a trapped atom. Our scheme operates in the atom-phonon resonance regime where the energy spectrum exhibits strong anharmonicity such that energy eigenstates with different phonon numbers can be well-resolved in the parameter space. Compared to earlier schemes operating in the far dispersive regime, the bundle states generated here contain a large steady-state phonon number. Therefore, the proposed system can be used as a high quality multiphonon source. Our results open up the possibility of using long-lived motional phonons as quantum resources, which could provide a broad physics community for applications in quantum metrology.

Symmetry-Protected Topological Phase for Spin-Tensor-Momentum-Coupled Ultracold Atoms

We propose a realizable experiment scheme to construct a one-dimensional synthetic magnetic flux lattice with spin-tensor-momentum coupled spin-1 atoms and explore its exotic topological states. Different from the Altland-Zirnbauer classification, we show that our system hosts a symmetryprotected phase protected by a magnetic group symmetry (M) and characterized by a Z2 topological invariant. In single-particle spectra, we show that the topological nontrivial phase supports two kinds of edge states, which include two (four) zero-energy edge modes in the absence (presence) of two-photon detuning. We further study the bulk-edge correspondence in a non-Hermitian model by taking into account the particle dissipation. It is shown that the non-Hermitian system preserves the bulk-edge correspondence under the M symmetry but exhibits the non-Hermitian skin effect with breaking the M symmetry at nonzero magnetic flux. This work provides insights in understanding the exotic topological quantum states of high-spin systems and facilitating their experimental explorations.

Strong Photon Blockade Mediated by Optical Stark Shift in a Single-Atom-Cavity System

We propose a theoretical scheme to achieve strong photon blockade via a single atom in cavity. By utilizing optical Stark shift, the dressed-state splitting between higher and lower branches is enhanced, which results in significant increasing for lower (higher) branch and decreasing for higher (lower) branch at the negative (positive) Stark shift, and dominates the time-evolution of photon number oscillations as well. Furthermore, the two-photon excitation is suppressed via quantum interference under optimal phase and Rabi frequency of an external microwave field. It is shown that the interplay between the quantum interference and the enhanced vacuum-Rabi splitting gives rise to a strong photon blockade for realizing high-quality single photon source beyond strong atom-cavity coupling regime. In particular, by tuning the optical Stark shift, the second-order correlation function for our scheme has three orders of magnitude smaller than Jaynes-Cummings model and correspondingly there appears a large cavity photon number as well. Our proposal may implicate exciting opportunities for potential applications on quantum network and quantum information processing.

Dispersion Suppressed Topological Thouless Pumping

In Thouless pumping, although non-flat band has no effects on the quantization of particle transport, it induces wave-packet dispersion which hinders the practical applications of Thouless pumping. Indeed, we find that the dispersion mainly arises from the dynamical phase difference between individual Bloch states. Here we propose two efficient schemes to suppress the dispersion in Thouless pumping: a re-localization echo protocol and a high-order tunneling suppression protocol. In the re-localization echo protocol, we reverse the Hamiltonian in the second pumping cycle to cancel the dynamical phase difference arising from non-flat band, so that the dispersed wave-packet becomes re-localized. In the high-order tunneling suppression protocol, we modulate the nearest-neighbor tunneling to make the Bloch band more flat and suppress the high-order tunneling which causes wave-packet dispersion. Our study paves a way toward the dispersionless Thouless pumping for practical applications in matter transport, state transfer and quantum communication.

Quantum statistics of the collective excitations of an atomic ensemble inside a cavity

We study the quantum statistical properties of the collective excitations of an atomic ensemble inside a high-finesse cavity. In the large-detuning regime, it is found that the virtual photon exchange can induce a long-range interaction between atoms, which results in correlated excitations. In particular, the atomic blockade phenomenon occurs when the induced long-range interaction effectively suppresses the double atomic excitation, when the average photon number takes certain values, which makes the two nearest energy levels degenerate. We also show that quantum phase transitions occur in the indirectly-interacting atomic ensemble when the average photon number reaches several critical points. In this sense, the quantum statistical properties of the collective excitations are very sensitive to the change of the average photon number. Our model exhibits quantum phase transitions similar to the ones in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. Our proposal could be implemented in a variety of systems including cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), Bose-Einstein condensates, and circuit QED.

Quantum Control of Light through an Atom-Molecule Dark State

We propose to use a quantized version of coherent two-color photoassociation to realize a hybrid device for quantum control of light. The dynamical features of this system are exhibited, including the slowing down or storage of light and the molecular matter-wave solitons. This may indicate a hybrid atom-molecule quantum device for storage and retrieve of optical information.
