Rayleigh-Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy of air; experiment, predictive model and dimensionless scaling

Spontaneous Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering (RBS) experiments have been performed in air for pressures in the range 0.25 - 3 bar and temperatures in the range 273 - 333 K. The functional behaviour of the RB-spectral profile as a function of experimental parameters, such as the incident wavelength, scattering angle, pressure and temperature is analyzed, as well as the dependence on thermodynamic properties of the gas, as the shear viscosity, the thermal conductivity, the internal heat capacity and the bulk viscosity. Measurements are performed in a scattering geometry detecting at a scattering angle $θ=55.7^\circ$ and an incident wavelength of $λ_i=532.22$ nm, at which the Brillouin features become more pronounced than in a right angles geometry and for ultraviolet light. For pressure conditions of 1 - 3 bar the RB-spectra, measured at high signal-to-noise ratio, are compared to Tenti-S6 model calculations and values for the bulk viscosity of air are extracted. Values of $η_b$ are found to exhibit a linear dependence on temperature over the measurement interval in the range $1.0 - 2.0 \times 10^{-5}$ Pa$\cdot$s. A temperature dependent value is deduced from a collection of experiments to yield: $η_{\rm b} = (0.86 \times 10^{-5}) + 1.29 \times 10^{-7} \cdot (T - 250)$. These results are implemented in model calculations that were verified for the low pressure conditions ($p < 1$ bar) relevant for the Earth's atmosphere. As a result we demonstrate that the RB-scattering spectral profiles for air under sub-atmospheric conditions can be generated via the Tenti-S6 model, for given gas-phase and detection conditions ($p$, $T$, $λ_i$, and $θ$), and for values for the gas transport coefficients.

Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering in binary mixtures of disparate-mass constituents: SF$_6-$He, SF$_6-$D$_2$ and SF$_6-$H$_2$

The spectral distribution of light scattered by microscopic thermal fluctuations in binary mixture gases was investigated experimentally and theoretically. Measurements of Rayleigh-Brillouin spectral profiles were performed at a wavelength of 532 nm and at room temperature, for mixtures of SF$_6-$He, SF$_6-$D$_2$ and SF$_6-$H$_2$. In these measurements, the pressure of the gases with heavy molecular mass (SF$_6$) is set at 1 bar, while the pressure of the lighter collision partner was varied. In view of the large polarizability of SF$_6$ and the very small polarizabilities of He, H$_2$ and D$_2$, under the chosen pressure conditions these low mass species act as spectators and do not contribute to the light scattering spectrum, while they influence the motion and relaxation of the heavy SF$_6$ molecules. A generalized hydrodynamic model was developed that should be applicable for the particular case of molecules with heavy and light disparate masses, as is the case for the heavy SF$_6$ molecule, and the lighter collision partners. Based on the kinetic theory of gases, our model replaces the classical Navier-Stokes-Fourier relations with constitutive equations having an exponential memory kernel. The energy exchange between translational and internal modes of motion is included and quantified with a single parameter $z$ that characterizes the ratio between the mean elastic and inelastic molecular collision frequencies. The model is compared with the experimental Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering data, where the value of the parameter $z$ is determined in a least-squares procedure. Where very good agreement is found between experiment and the generalized hydrodynamic model, the computations in the framework of classical hydrodynamics strongly deviate. Only in the hydrodynamic regime both models are shown to converge.

Graph Nets for Partial Charge Prediction

Atomic partial charges are crucial parameters for Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, molecular mechanics calculations, and virtual screening, as they determine the electrostatic contributions to interaction energies. Current methods for calculating partial charges, however, are either slow and scale poorly with molecular size (quantum chemical methods) or unreliable (empirical methods). Here, we present a new charge derivation method based on Graph Nets---a set of update and aggregate functions that operate on molecular topologies and propagate information thereon---that could approximate charges derived from Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations with high accuracy and an over 500-fold speed up.

Bulk viscosity of CO$_2$ from Rayleigh-Brillouin lightscattering spectroscopy at 532 nm

Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering spectra of CO$_2$ were measured at pressures ranging from 0.5 to 4~bar, and temperatures from 257 to 355~K using green laser light (wavelength 532~nm, scattering angle of 55.7$^\circ$). These spectra were compared to two lineshape models, which take the bulk viscosity as a parameter. One model applies to the kinetic regime, i.e. low pressures, while the second model uses the continuum, hydrodynamic approach and takes the rotational relaxation time as a parameter, which translates into the bulk viscosity. We do not find a significant dependence of the bulk viscosity with pressure or temperature. At pressures where both models apply we find a consistent value of the ratio of bulk viscosity over shear viscosity $η_b/η_s = 0.41 \pm 0.10$. This value is four orders of magnitude smaller than the common value that is based on the damping of ultrasound, and signifies that in light scattering only relaxation of rotational modes matters, while vibrational modes remain 'frozen'.

Design and analysis of a 1-ton prototype of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment

The Jinping Neutrino Experiment will perform an in-depth research on solar neutrinos and geo-neutrinos. Two structural options (i.e., cylindrical and spherical schemes) are proposed for the Jinping detector based on other successful underground neutrino detectors. Several key factors in the design are also discussed in detail. A 1-ton prototype of the Jinping experiment is proposed based on physics requirements. Subsequently, the structural design, installation procedure, and mechanical analysis of the neutrino detector prototype are discussed. The results show that the maximum Mises stresses on the acrylic vessel, stainless steel truss, and the tank are all lower than the design values of the strengths. The stability requirement of the stainless steel truss in the detector prototype is satisfied. Consequently, the structural scheme for the 1-ton prototype is safe and reliable.

Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering in SF$_6$ in the kinetic regime

Rayleigh-Brillouin spectral profiles are measured with a laser-based scatterometry setup for a 90 degrees scattering angle at a high signal-to-noise ratio (r.m.s. noise below 0.15 \% w.r.t. peak intensity) in sulphur-hexafluoride gas for pressures in the range 0.2 -- 5 bar and for a wavelength of $λ=403.0$ nm. The high quality data are compared to a number of light scattering models in order to address the effects of rotational and vibrational relaxation. While the vibrational relaxation rate is so slow that vibration degrees of freedom remain frozen, rotations relax on time scales comparable to those of the density fluctuations. Therefore, the heat capacity, the thermal conductivity and the bulk viscosity are all frequency-dependent transport coefficients. This is relevant for the Tenti model that depends on the values chosen for these transport coefficients. This is not the case for the other two models considered: a kinetic model based on rough-sphere interactions, and a model based on fluctuating hydrodynamics. The deviations with the experiment are similar between the three different models, except for the hydrodynamic model at pressures $p \lesssim 2\;{\rm bar}$. As all models are in line with the ideal gas law, we hypothesize the presence of real gas effects in the measured spectra.

Letter of Intent: Jinping Neutrino Experiment

Jinping Neutrino Experiment (Jinping) is proposed to significantly improve measurements on solar neutrinos and geoneutrinos in China Jinping Laboratory - a lab with a number of unparalleled features, thickest overburden, lowest reactor neutrino background, etc., which identify it as the world-best low-energy neutrino laboratory. The proposed experiment will have target mass of 4 kilotons of liquid scintillator or water-based liquid scintillator, with a fiducial mass of 2 kilotons for neutrino-electron scattering events and 3 kilotons for inverse-beta interaction events. A number of initial sensitivities studies have been carried out, including on the transition phase for the solar neutrinos oscillation from the vacuum to the matter effect, the discovery of solar neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle, the resolution of the high and low metallicity hypotheses, and the unambiguous separation on U and Th cascade decays from the dominant crustal anti-electron neutrinos in China.
