Machine Learning Empowered Trajectory and Passive Beamforming Design in UAV-RIS Wireless Networks

A novel framework is proposed for integrating reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled wireless networks, where an RIS is deployed for enhancing the service quality of the UAV. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique is invoked to further improve the spectrum efficiency of the network, while mobile users (MUs) are considered as roaming continuously. The energy consumption minimizing problem is formulated by jointly designing the movement of the UAV, phase shifts of the RIS, power allocation policy from the UAV to MUs, as well as determining the dynamic decoding order. A decaying deep Q-network (D-DQN) based algorithm is proposed for tackling this pertinent problem. In the proposed D-DQN based algorithm, the central controller is selected as an agent for periodically observing the state of UAV-enabled wireless network and for carrying out actions to adapt to the dynamic environment. In contrast to the conventional DQN algorithm, the decaying learning rate is leveraged in the proposed D-DQN based algorithm for attaining a tradeoff between accelerating training speed and converging to the local optimal. Numerical results demonstrate that: 1) In contrast to the conventional Q-learning algorithm, which cannot converge when being adopted for solving the formulated problem, the proposed D-DQN based algorithm is capable of converging with minor constraints; 2) The energy dissipation of the UAV can be significantly reduced by integrating RISs in UAV-enabled wireless networks; 3) By designing the dynamic decoding order and power allocation policy, the RIS-NOMA case consumes 11.7% less energy than the RIS-OMA case.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Multiple Access Over Fading Channels

This paper considers a two-user downlink transmission in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided network over fading channels. Particularly, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and two orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes, namely, time division multiple access (TDMA) and frequency division multiple access (FDMA), are studied. The objective is to maximize the system average sum rate for the delay-tolerant transmission. We propose two adjustment schemes, namely, dynamic phase adjustment and one-time phase adjustment. The power budget, minimum average data rate, and discrete unit modulus reflection coefficient are considered as constrains. To solve the problem, two phase shifters adjustment algorithms with low complexity are proposed to obtain near optimal solutions. With given phase shifters and satisfaction of time-sharing condition, the optimal resource allocations are obtained using the Lagrangian dual decomposition. The numerical results reveal that: i) the average sum rate of proposed NOMA network aided by IRS outperforms the conventional NOMA network over fading channels; ii) with continuous IRS adjustment in the fading block, the proposed TDMA scheme performs better than the FDMA scheme; iii) increasing the minimum average user rate requirement has less impact on the proposed IRS-NOMA system than on the IRS-OMA system.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Enhanced Indoor Robot Path Planning Using Radio Maps

An indoor robot navigation system is investigated, where an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is employed to enhance the connectivity between the access point (AP) and a mobile robotic user. The considered system is optimized for minimization of the travelling time/distance of the mobile robotic user from a given starting point to a predefined final location, while satisfying constraints on the communication quality. To tackle this problem, a radio map based approach is proposed to exploit location-dependent channel propagation knowledge. Specifically, a channel power gain map is constructed, which characterizes the spatial distribution of the maximum expected effective channel power gain of the mobile robotic user for the optimal IRS phase shifts. Based on the obtained channel power gain map, the communication-aware robot path planing problem is solved as a shortest path problem by exploiting graph theory. Numerical results show that: 1) Deploying an IRS can significantly extend the coverage of the AP and reduce the travelling distance of the mobile robotic user; 2) 2- or 3-bit IRS phase shifters can achieve nearly the same performance as continuous IRS phase shifters.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Aided Multi-Cell NOMA Networks: A Stochastic Geometry Model

By activating blocked users and altering successive interference cancellation (SIC) sequences, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) become promising for enhancing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. The downlink RIS-aided NOMA networks are investigated via stochastic geometry. We first introduce the unique path loss model for RIS reflecting channels. Then, we evaluate the angle distributions based on a Poisson cluster process (PCP) model, which theoretically demonstrates that the angles of incidence and reflection are uniformly distributed. Additionally, we derive closed-form analytical and asymptotic expressions for coverage probabilities of the paired NOMA users. Lastly, we derive the analytical expressions of the ergodic rate for both of the paired NOMA users and calculate the asymptotic expressions for the typical user. The analytical results indicate that 1) the achievable rates reach an upper limit when the length of RIS increases; 2) exploiting RISs can enhance the path loss intercept to improve the performance without influencing the bandwidth. Our results show that 1) RIS-aided NOMA networks have superior performance than the conventional NOMA networks, and 2) the SIC order in NOMA systems can be altered since RISs are able to change the channel quality of NOMA users.

Caching Placement and Resource Allocation for Cache-Enabling UAV NOMA Networks

This article investigates the cache-enabling unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) cellular networks with massive access capability supported by non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The delivery of a large volume of multimedia contents for ground users is assisted by a mobile UAV base station, which caches some popular contents for wireless backhaul link traffic offloading. In cache-enabling UAV NOMA networks, the caching placement of content caching phase and radio resource allocation of content delivery phase are crucial for network performance. To cope with the dynamic UAV locations and content requests in practical scenarios, we formulate the long-term caching placement and resource allocation optimization problem for content delivery delay minimization as a Markov decision process (MDP). The UAV acts as an agent to take actions for caching placement and resource allocation, which includes the user scheduling of content requests and the power allocation of NOMA users. In order to tackle the MDP, we propose a Q-learning based caching placement and resource allocation algorithm, where the UAV learns and selects action with \emph{soft ${\varepsilon}$-greedy} strategy to search for the optimal match between actions and states. Since the action-state table size of Q-learning grows with the number of states in the dynamic networks, we propose a function approximation based algorithm with combination of stochastic gradient descent and deep neural networks, which is suitable for large-scale networks. Finally, the numerical results show that the proposed algorithms provide considerable performance compared to benchmark algorithms, and obtain a trade-off between network performance and calculation complexity.

A Novel Physics-based Channel Model for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-assisted Multi-user Communication Systems

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is one of the promising technologies contributing to the next generation smart radio environment. A novel physics-based RIS channel model is proposed. Particularly, we consider the RIS and the scattering environment as a whole by studying the signal's multipath propagation, as well as the radiation pattern of the RIS. The model suggests that the RIS-assisted wireless channel can be approximated by a Rician distribution. Analytical expressions are derived for the shape factor and the scale factor of the distribution. For the case of continuous phase shifts, the distribution depends on the number of elements of the RIS and the observing direction of the receiver. For the case of continuous phase shifts, the distribution further depends on the quantization level of the RIS phase error. The scaling law of the average received power is obtained from the scale factor of the distribution. For the application scenarios where RIS functions as an anomalous reflector, we investigate the performance of single RIS-assisted multiple access networks for time-division multiple access (TDMA), frequency-division multiple access (FDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Closed-form expressions for the outage probability of the proposed channel model are derived. It is proved that a constant diversity order exists, which is independent of the number of RIS elements. Simulation results are presented to confirm that the proposed model applies effectively to the phased-array implemented RISs.

Cache-enabled HetNets with Limited Backhaul: A Stochastic Geometry Model

With the rapid explosion of data volume from mobile networks, edge caching has received significant attentions as an efficient approach to boost content delivery efficiency by bringing contents near users. In this article, cache-enabled heterogeneous networks (HetNets) considering the limited backhaul is analyzed with the aid of the stochastic geometry approach. A hybrid caching policy, in which the most popular contents are cached in the macro BSs tier with the deterministic caching strategy and the less popular contents are cached in the helpers tier with the probabilistic caching strategy, is proposed. Correspondingly, the content-centric association strategy is designed based on the comprehensive state of the access link, the cache and the backhaul link. Under the hybrid caching policy, new analytical results for successful content delivery probability, average successful delivery rate and energy efficiency are derived in the general scenario, the interference-limited scenario and the mean load scenario. The simulation results show that the proposed caching policy outperforms the most popular caching policy in HetNets with the limited backhaul. The performance gain is dramatically improved when the content popularity is less skewed, the cache capacity is sufficient and the helper density is relatively large. Furthermore, it is confirmed that there exists an optimal helper density to maximize the energy efficiency of the cache-enabled HetNets.

Cache-enabling UAV Communications: Network Deployment and Resource Allocation

In this article, we investigate the content distribution in the hotspot area, whose traffic is offloaded by the combination of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication and edge caching. In cache-enabling UAV-assisted cellular networks, the network deployment and resource allocation are vital for quality of experience (QoE) of users with content distribution applications. We formulate a joint optimization problem of UAV deployment, caching placement and user association for maximizing QoE of users, which is evaluated by mean opinion score (MOS). To solve this challenging problem, we decompose the optimization problem into three sub-problems. Specifically, we propose a swap matching based UAV deployment algorithm, then obtain the near-optimal caching placement and user association by greedy algorithm and Lagrange dual, respectively. Finally, we propose a low complexity iterative algorithm for the joint UAV deployment, caching placement and user association optimization, which achieves good computational complexity-optimality tradeoff. Simulation results reveal that: i) the MOS of the proposed algorithm approaches that of the exhaustive search method and converges within several iterations; and ii) compared with the benchmark algorithms, the proposed algorithm achieves better performance in terms of MOS, content access delay and backhaul traffic offloading.

Exploiting Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces in NOMA Networks: Joint Beamforming Optimization

This paper investigates a downlink multiple-input single-output intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, where a base station (BS) serves multiple users with the aid of IRSs. Our goal is to maximize the sum rate of all users by jointly optimizing the active beamforming at the BS and the passive beamforming at the IRS, subject to successive interference cancellation decoding rate conditions and IRS reflecting elements constraints. In term of the characteristics of reflection amplitudes and phase shifts, we consider ideal and non-ideal IRS assumptions. To tackle the formulated non-convex problems, we propose efficient algorithms by invoking alternating optimization, which design the active beamforming and passive beamforming alternately. For the ideal IRS scenario, the two subproblems are solved by invoking the successive convex approximation technique. For the non-ideal IRS scenario, constant modulus IRS elements are further divided into continuous phase shifts and discrete phase shifts. To tackle the passive beamforming problem with continuous phase shifts, a novel algorithm is developed by utilizing the sequential rank-one constraint relaxation approach, which is guaranteed to find a locally optimal rank-one solution. Then, a quantization-based scheme is proposed for discrete phase shifts. Finally, numerical results illustrate that: i) the system sum rate can be significantly improved by deploying the IRS with the proposed algorithms; ii) 3-bit phase shifters are capable of achieving almost the same performance as the ideal IRS; iii) the proposed IRS-aided NOMA systems achieve higher system sum rate than the IRS-aided orthogonal multiple access system.

Semi-Grant-Free NOMA: A Stochastic Geometry Model

Grant-free (GF) transmission holds promise in terms of low latency communication by directly transmitting messages without waiting for any permissions. However, collision situations may frequently happen when limited spectrum is occupied by numerous GF users. The non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique can be a promising solution to achieve massive connectivity and fewer collisions for GF transmission by multiplexing users in power domain. We utilize a semi-grant-free (semi-GF) NOMA scheme for enhancing network connectivity and spectral efficiency by enabling grant-based (GB) and GF users to share the same spectrum resources. With the aid of semi-GF protocols, uplink NOMA networks are investigated by invoking stochastic geometry techniques. We propose a novel \textit{dynamic protocol} to interpret which part of the GF users are paired in NOMA transmissions via transmitting various channel quality thresholds by an added handshake. We utilize open-loop protocol with a fixed average threshold as the benchmark to investigate performance improvement. It is observed that dynamic protocol provides more accurate channel quality thresholds than open-loop protocol, thereby the interference from the GF users is reduced to a large extent. We analyze the outage performance and diversity gains under two protocols. Numerical results demonstrate that dynamic protocol is capable of enhancing the outage performance than open-loop protocol.

I/Q Imbalance Aware Nonlinear Wireless-Powered Relaying of B5G Networks: Security and Reliability Analysis

Physical layer security is known as a promising paradigm to ensure security for the beyond 5G (B5G) networks in the presence of eavesdroppers. In this paper, we elaborate on a tractable analysis framework to evaluate the reliability and security of wireless-powered decode-and-forward (DF) multi-relay networks. The nonlinear energy harvesters, in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance (IQI) and channel estimation errors (CEEs) are taken into account in the considered system. To further improve the secure performance, two relay selection strategies are presented: 1) suboptimal relay selection (SRS); 2) optimal relay selection (ORS). Specifically, exact analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the intercept probability (IP) are derived in closed-form. For the IP, we consider that the eavesdropper can wiretap the signal from the source or the relay. In order to obtain more useful insights, we carry out the asymptotic analysis and diversity orders for the OP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime under non-ideal and ideal conditions. Numerical results show that: 1) Although the mismatches of amplitude/phase of transmitter (TX)/receiver (RX) limit the OP performance, it can enhance IP performance; 2) Large number of relays yields better OP performance; 3) There are error floors for the OP because of the CEEs; 4) There is a trade-off for the OP and IO to obtain the balance between reliability and security.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for Air-to-Ground Communication

This paper investigates ground-aerial uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) cellular networks. A rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) user and multiple ground users (GUEs) are served by ground base stations (GBSs) by utilizing the uplink NOMA protocol. The UAV is dispatched to upload specific information bits to each target GBSs. Specifically, our goal is to minimize the UAV mission completion time by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory and UAV-GBS association order while taking into account the UAV's interference to non-associated GBSs. The formulated problem is a mixed integer non-convex problem and involves infinite variables. To tackle this problem, we efficiently check the feasibility of the formulated problem by utilizing graph theory and topology theory. Next, we prove that the optimal UAV trajectory needs to satisfy the \emph{fly-hover-fly} structure. With this insight, we first design an efficient solution with predefined hovering locations by leveraging graph theory techniques. Furthermore, we propose an iterative UAV trajectory design by applying successive convex approximation (SCA) technique, which is guaranteed to coverage to a locally optimal solution. We demonstrate that the two proposed designs exhibit polynomial time complexity. Finally, numerical results show that: 1) the SCA based design outperforms the fly-hover-fly based design; 2) the UAV mission completion time is significantly minimized with proposed NOMA schemes compared with the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme; 3) the increase of GUEs' quality of service (QoS) requirements will increase the UAV mission completion time.

UAV-Aided Multi-Way NOMA Networks with Residual Hardware Impairments

In this paper, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) multi-way relaying networks (MWRNs). Multiple terrestrial users aim to exchange their mutual information via an amplify-and-forward (AF) UAV relay. Specifically, the realistic assumption of the residual hardware impairments (RHIs) at the transceivers is taken into account. To evaluate the performance of the considered networks, we derive the analytical expressions for the achievable sum-rate (ASR). In addition, we carry out the asymptotic analysis by invoking the affine expansion of the ASR in terms of \emph{high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) slope} and \emph{high SNR power offset}. Numerical results show that: 1) Compared with orthogonal multiple access (OMA), the proposed networks can significantly improve the ASR since it can reduce the time slots from $\left[ {\left( {M - 1} \right)/2} \right] + 1$ to 2; and 2) RHIs of both transmitter and receiver have the same effects on the ASR of the considered networks.

Secrecy Analysis of Ambient Backscatter NOMA Systems under I/Q Imbalance

We investigate the reliability and security of the ambient backscatter (AmBC) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, where the source aims to communication with two NOMA users in the presence of an eavesdropper. We consider a more practical case that nodes and backscatter device (BD) suffer from in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance (IQI). More specifically, exact analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the intercept probability (IP) are derived in closedform. Moreover, the asymptotic behaviors and corresponding diversity orders for the OP are discussed. Numerical results show that: 1) Although IQI reduces the reliability, it can enhance the security. 2) Compared with the traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system, the AmBC-NOMA system can obtain better reliability when the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio is low; 3) There are error floors for the OP because of the reflection coefficient \b{eta} .

Outage Behaviors of NOMA-based Satellite Network over Shadowed-Rician Fading Channels

This paper investigates the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to satellite communication network over Shadowed-Rician fading channels. The impact of imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) on NOMA-based satellite network is taken into consideration from the perspective of practical scenarios. We first derive new exact expressions of outage probability for the p-th terrestrial user and provide the corresponding asymptotic analysis results. The diversity order of zero and p are achieved by the p-th terrestrial user with ipSIC and perfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC), respectively. Finally, the presented simulation results show that: 1) On the condition of pSIC, the outage behaviors of NOMA-based satellite network are superior to that of orthogonal multiple access; 2) With the value of residual interference increasing, the outage performance of terrestrial users with ipSIC is becoming worse seriously; and 3) Infrequent light shadowing of Shadowed-Rician fading brings the better outage probability compared to frequent heavy and average shadowing.
