Joint Segment Activation and Antenna Placement for Uplink SWAN Systems

This article analyzes the achievable sum-rate of multiuser uplink segmented waveguide-enabled pinching-antenna systems (SWANs). To unveil system-design insights, an upper bound on the achievable sum-rate is derived, based on which the existence of an optimal segment activation level is theoretically established. Motivated by this result, hybrid segment selection and aggregation (HSS/A) schemes are proposed to jointly optimize segment activation and pinching-antenna (PA) placement. Correspondingly, low-complexity greedy algorithms are developed for the considered optimization problem. Numerical results validate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate that the proposed HSS/A schemes outperform conventional full-segment aggregation.

Physical-AI: From Channel Awareness to Environmental Intelligence in 6G Wireless Networks

Conventional wireless networks rely on instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and react to channel variations without explicitly modeling the physical environment, limiting their ability to handle blockage, mobility, and interference in dynamic deployments. Paradigms such as Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) add sensing capabilities but lack explicit environment modeling and decision-making. In this article, we propose Physical-AI: a new architecture for environment-aware wireless networking, where radio signals enable sensing, modeling, and interaction with the environment in addition to data transmission. The framework proposes a self-supervised spatiotemporal radio foundation model for transforming distributed radio observations into a shared latent environmental representation. Multiple inference heads operate on this representation to estimate key environmental properties, including blockage, user distribution, mobility dynamics, and interference structure. A task-specific neural decision layer maps this representation to proactive, context-aware control actions. By integrating perception, world modeling, and decision-making in a closed loop, the proposed framework goes beyond ISAC and establishes Physical-AI as a promising architecture for intelligent 6G systems. Simulation results show that the proposed predictive framework reduces outage probability and blockage-response latency, particularly under increasing beam-switching delays.

FluxShard: Motion-Aware Feature Cache Reuse for Collaborative Video Analytics in Mobile Edge Computing

Caching and reusing intermediate features across consecutive frames is a common technique to reduce redundant computation and transmission for edge-cloud video analytics in mobile edge computation. Existing methods manage the cache in a fixed or globally shifted coordinate system, treating it as an indivisible whole. Under the non-uniform motion patterns of mobile scenes, this whole-scene granularity invalidates large portions of the cache even when most content has merely shifted spatially, wasting computation and bandwidth. The root cause is a granularity mismatch: the cache is managed per scene, yet motion varies per region. In this paper, we present FluxShard, a motion-aware edge-cloud video analytics system that uses codec-level block motion vectors (MVs) to manage feature cache reuse and recomputation at the granularity of individual motion regions. By re-indexing cached features along per-block MVs, FluxShard separates spatial displacement from content changes, recovering reusable content that whole-scene methods would otherwise discard. To ensure correct reuse under heterogeneous motion, the Receptive Field Alignment Principle (RFAP) identifies, from the input-level MV field alone, the positions that must be recomputed due to inconsistent spatial composition within receptive fields. To maintain cache coherence across frames, MV-guided cache remapping warps the entire feature cache to the current coordinate system each frame, sustaining a high reuse ratio over time. A profiling-driven dispatcher routes the remaining sparse workload between edge and cloud for lower latency. Evaluation across multiple vision tasks, dynamic video benchmarks, and network conditions shows that FluxShard reduces latency by 32.6-83.8% and energy by 14.9-64.0% over all baselines under the prescribed accuracy budget.

Over-the-Air Computation via Segmented Waveguide-Enabled Pinching-Antenna Systems

A segmented waveguide-enabled pinching-antenna system (SWAN)-assisted over-the-air computation (AirComp) framework is proposed. Three transmission architectures, namely segment selection (SS), phase-shifter-free segment aggregation (SA), and phase-shifter-enabled SA, are developed for uplink signal aggregation. For each architecture, low-complexity algorithms are developed to optimize the pinching-antenna placement and the per-segment phase shifts. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches and the superiority of SWAN over the conventional pinching-antenna system (PASS). It is shown that both SS and SA achieve lower computation mean-squared error than the conventional PASS, while segment-wise phase control further improves the performance of SA.

Bridging Standardized Codebook and Site-Specific Beamforming: A Unified Limited-Feedback Framework

A site-specific Type-II codebook design is proposed for downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) limited-feedback beamforming. The key idea is to embed a learned site-specific propagation prior into the Type-II channel state information (CSI) feedback pipeline. Specifically, the base station (BS) uses a low-overhead reference signal received power (RSRP) fingerprint collected during synchronization signal block (SSB) probing to infer a user equipment (UE)-dependent dominant beam subspace before explicit CSI acquisition. The UE then estimates and feeds back only the low-dimensional effective channel coefficients within this inferred subspace, thereby avoiding full-dimensional online subspace discovery while retaining a rich multi-beam representation capability. To analyze the proposed design and compare it with standardized feedback mechanisms, a unified subspace-projection framework is developed by jointly characterizing CSI acquisition, UE-side compression, BS-side reconstruction, and effective spectral efficiency. Under this framework, Type-I, Type-II, port-selection feedback, and the proposed scheme are interpreted as different ways of inducing a feedback representation subspace. The probing codebook and the BS-side subspace inference network are then formulated as a coupled task-oriented design problem and are optimized end-to-end by maximizing the normalized CSI-capture efficiency. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed feedback scheme achieves Type-II-comparable CSI-capture capability with substantially lower online overhead and UE-side complexity, thereby improving the effective spectral efficiency.

Cramér-Rao Bound Optimization for Near-Field ISAC with Extended Targets

Near-field integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) requires target models beyond the point-target abstraction when the target has a non-negligible spatial extent. In this letter, a geometry-aware transmit design is developed for a parametric extended target (ET) described by its center, orientation, and size under spherical-wave propagation. The CRB for the geometric parameters is formulated around a nominal ET state, an exact ET-aware reduced subspace is identified for the lifted covariance formulation, and a reduced-dimensional semidefinite relaxation (SDR) is developed under signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and power constraints. Simulation results show lower CRB values than point-target and geometry-agnostic baselines together with substantially reduced runtime for large arrays.

Mobile Communications in Intelligent Rail Transit: From LCX to PASS

Wireless communications in intelligent rail transit face harsh propagation conditions, including severe penetration loss, frequent blockages, and amplified large-scale fading. Existing leaky coaxial cables (LCX) provide wired-to-wireless conversion and stable coverage, but can be energy- and spectrum-inefficient, particularly at high carrier frequencies. Motivated by the growing demand for high-capacity and high-reliability rail services, this article introduces pinching-antenna systems (PASS), which are flexible waveguide-based architectures that enable reconfigurable radiation points with low deployment overhead and a natural fit to predominantly straight track geometries. We discuss the key benefits and deployment flexibility of PASS, evaluate their performance relative to LCX via representative simulations, and present a deep learning (DL)-enabled channel-estimation framework to cope with mobility-induced channel dynamics. Finally, we summarize the major open challenges for practical deployment and outline promising research directions.

Spectral and Energy Efficiency Tradeoff for Pinching-Antenna Systems

The joint transmit and pinching beamforming design for spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) tradeoff in pinching-antenna systems (PASS) is proposed, under practical channel and energy consumption models. In the single-user scenario, it is proved that the optimal pinching antenna (PA) positions are independent of the transmit beamforming. Based on this insight, a two-stage joint beamforming design is proposed. Specifically, in the first stage, a general PA placement framework is proposed for multi-waveguide systems. In the second stage, the closed-form solution for the optimal transmit beamformer is derived given the optimized PA positions. In the multi-user scenario, an alternating optimization (AO)-based joint beamforming design is proposed to balance the SE-EE performance while taking the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements into account. It is proved that the proposed AO-based algorithm is guaranteed to converge when no constraints are violated in PA placement subproblem. Numerical results demonstrate that: 1) the proposed algorithms effectively improve joint SE-EE performance; 2) PASS exhibits strong robustness against variations in the service area along the waveguide direction.

Mutual Coupling-Aware Beamforming in Multi-User Continuous Aperture Array Systems

A mutual coupling-aware beamforming design for continuous aperture array (CAPA)-aided multi-user systems is investigated. First, a transmit coupling kernel is characterized to explicitly capture the mutual coupling effects inherent in CAPAs, based on which a mutual coupling-aware sum-rate maximization functional optimization problem is formulated. To address this problem, a kernel approximation (KA)-based weighted minimum mean-squared error (WMMSE) algorithm is developed. The optimal beamforming condition is derived within the WMMSE framework using the calculus of variations, while KA is employed to obtain a closed-form beamforming solution via wavenumber-domain Fourier transforms and Gauss-Legendre quadrature. Furthermore, the proposed framework is extended to CAPA-to-CAPA multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Finally, numerical results demonstrate that: 1) the proposed algorithm achieves improved performance compared to benchmark schemes; 2) the modeled coupling effects are physically rational, where the performance of spatially discrete arrays converges to that of CAPAs; and 3) CAPA-to-CAPA MIMO systems can achieve higher degrees of freedom when the transceivers are placed in close proximity.

Graph-Enhanced LLM for SWAN-ISAC

Segmented pinching antenna assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems enable flexible spatial resource utilization by allowing different waveguide segments to be dynamically configured for transmission and reception. However, the resulting design requires the joint optimization of antenna deployment, segment partitioning, and beamforming under coupled communication and sensing constraints. In this paper, we propose a general learning framework for segmented pinching antenna assisted ISAC systems. Specifically, a channel state information (CSI)-induced self-graph is constructed to capture the scenario-dependent interactions among communication users and sensing targets. Based on the learned graph representation, a large language model (LLM) backbone with low-rank adaptation (LoRA) is employed, followed by two task-specific output heads for antenna deployment and beamforming prediction, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed framework achieves a favorable tradeoff between communication rate and sensing accuracy

LLM-enabled Antenna Partitioning and Beamforming Optimization for Segmented Pinching

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) requires spatial architectures that can flexibly balance data transmission and environment sensing. Segmented pinching antenna-assisted ISAC provides such flexibility by allowing different waveguide segments to be dynamically configured for transmission and reception. However, its design involves the joint optimization of antenna deployment, segment partitioning, and beamforming under coupled communication and sensing constraints, which becomes particularly challenging when the numbers of communication users and sensing targets vary across scenarios. To endow the system with stronger adaptability to changing user and target configurations, we propose a general learning framework for segmented pinching antenna-assisted ISAC systems. Specifically, a channel state information (CSI)-induced self-graph is constructed to produce permutation-invariant representations of user-target interactions, and the resulting features are processed by a large language model (LLM) backbone with two task-specific heads for jointly predicting antenna deployment, segment partitioning, and ISAC beamforming. In addition, a user count transfer mechanism is developed to examine whether the learned deployment policy is site-specific and reusable under changed user configurations. Simulation results show that the proposed framework achieves higher communication rates while maintaining reliable sensing accuracy. Moreover, the learned deployment policy remains highly stable when transferring to other user counts, which reduces the training cost from full model retraining to beamforming head adaption.

Modeling and Analysis for Joint Design of Communication and Control

A unified analytical framework for joint design of communication and control (JDCC) is proposed. Within this framework, communication transmission delay and steady-state control variance are derived as the two fundamental JDCC performance metrics. The Pareto boundary is then established to characterize the optimal communication-control trade-off in JDCC systems. To further obtain closed-form expressions, their performance regions are derived under maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) and zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming. For system reliability evaluation, the communication-only and control-only outage probabilities are first derived. Based on these, the JDCC outage probability is defined to quantify the probability that the communication-delay and control-error requirements cannot be simultaneously satisfied. Its analytical expressions are then derived under both MRT and ZF schemes. Finally, numerical results validate the theoretical results and reveal that: (1) the Pareto boundary characterizes the trade-off frontier and performance limit of JDCC systems and (2) the JDCC reliability is jointly determined by the uplink-downlink closed-loop control and its coupling with communication.

MIMO OFDM-Enabled ISAC for Low-Altitude Non-Cooperative UAV Surveillance: A Survey

The widespread use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in low-altitude airspace has raised significant safety and security concerns, motivating the development of reliable non-cooperative UAV surveillance technologies. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), enabled by multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architectures and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms, has emerged as a promising paradigm for leveraging cellular infrastructure to support large-scale sensing without additional hardware deployment. This paper presents the first comprehensive survey dedicated to MIMO OFDM-enabled ISAC for low-altitude non-cooperative UAV surveillance, where the targeted UAVs do not intentionally assist the monitoring system through dedicated signaling or prior coordinate sharing. We first analyze the unique propagation characteristics of low-altitude UAV sensing, including severe clutter, rapid channel variations, and mixed near/far-field effects, and discuss corresponding waveform design principles. We then systematically review existing MIMO OFDM-enabled UAV surveillance techniques along four key dimensions: ISAC system modeling and network optimization, UAV detection and tracking algorithms under single and networked base station (BS) architectures, UAV identification techniques based on micro-Doppler and learning-based approaches, and experimental validations and practical field trials. Subsequently, we summarize open challenges such as sensing under severe clutter and multipath, data scarcity for identification, cooperative multi-BS fusion, and real-world deployment constraints. Finally, we outline promising future research directions toward 5G-Advanced (5G-A) and 6G-enabled low-altitude surveillance systems.

On the Performance of Physical Layer Security for Continuous-Aperture Array (CAPA) Systems

A continuous-aperture array (CAPA)-based secure transmission framework is proposed to enhance physical layer security. Continuous current distributions, or beamformers, are designed to maximize the secrecy transmission rate under a power constraint and to minimize the required transmission power for achieving a specific target secrecy rate. On this basis, the fundamental secrecy performance limits achieved by CAPAs are analyzed by deriving closed-form expressions for the maximum secrecy rate (MSR) and minimum required power (MRP), along with the corresponding optimal current distributions. To provide further insights, asymptotic analyses are performed for the MSR and MRP, which reveals that i) for the MSR, the optimal current distribution simplifies to maximal ratio transmission (MRT) beamforming in the low-SNR regime and to zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming in the high-SNR regime; ii) for the MRP, the optimal current distribution simplifies to ZF beamforming in the high-SNR regime. The derived results are specialized to the typical array structures, e.g., planar CAPAs and planar spatially discrete arrays (SPDAs). The rate and power scaling laws are further analyzed by assuming an infinitely large CAPA. Numerical results demonstrate that: i) the proposed secure continuous beamforming design outperforms MRT and ZF beamforming in terms of both achievable secrecy rate and power efficiency; ii) CAPAs achieve superior secrecy performance compared to conventional SPDAs.

Wideband Near-Field Sensing in ISAC: Unified Algorithm Design and Decoupled Effect Analysis

To advance integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) in sixth-generation (6G) extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) networks, a low-complexity compressed sensing (CS)-based dictionary design is proposed for wideband near-field (WB-NF) target localization. Currently, the massive signal dimensions in the WB-NF regime impose severe computational burdens and high spatial-frequency coherence on conventional grid-based algorithms. Furthermore, a unified framework exploiting both wideband (WB) and near-field (NF) effects is lacking, and the analytical conditions for simplifying this model into decoupled approximations remain uncharacterized. To address these challenges, the proposed algorithm mathematically decouples the mutual coherence function and introduces a novel angle-distance sampling grid with customized distance adjustments, drastically reducing dictionary dimensions while ensuring low coherence. To isolate the individual WB and NF impacts, two coherence-based metrics are formulated to establish the effective boundaries of the narrowband near-field (NB-NF) and wideband far-field (WB-FF) regions, where respective multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithms are utilized. Simulations demonstrate that the CS-based method achieves robust performance across the entire regime, and the established boundaries provide crucial theoretical guidelines for WB and NF effect decoupling.

Extended-Target Classification and Localization for Near-Field ISAC

Near-field integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) enables object-level sensing from distance-dependent array responses, yet most existing near-field methods still rely on point-target models and realistic extended targets remain largely unexplored. In this paper, joint target classification and range-azimuth localization are studied from channel responses of realistic extended targets. A dual-branch inference framework is proposed. Semantic and geometric branches are used for classification and localization, respectively. Cross-task attention is introduced after task-specific encoding so that complementary cues can be exchanged without forcing full feature sharing from the input stage. To improve localization on the same backbone, uncertainty-aware regression and a physics-guided structured objective are adopted, including planar consistency, peak-response regularization, and geometry-coupling constraints. Training and evaluation data are generated from full-wave electromagnetic scattering simulations of voxelized vehicle targets with randomized heading angles, material contrasts, and placements. The compared variants show that cross-task attention mainly benefits classification, while uncertainty-aware and structured supervision are needed to recover strong localization performance on the same backbone. Under the adopted shared-OFDM benchmark, the proposed framework reaches the best joint operating point with fewer sensing tones for the same target performance region.

Exploiting Self-Sustainable Information-Bearing RIS in Underlay CR-NOMA Networks

Information-bearing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (IB-RIS) provide a promising solution to self-sustainable and green communications by harvesting ambient radio frequency energy while embedding information via passive reflection. This paper investigates a self-sustainable IB-RIS (SIB-RIS)-assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network operating in an underlay cognitive radio (CR) system. Specifically, a multi-antenna primary transmitter (PT) serves a primary user (PU) and concurrently illuminates the secondary nodes, which enables each SIB-RIS to perform simultaneous energy harvesting and backscatter-based information embedding at each RIS. Based on this model, a weighted sum spectral efficiency (WSSE) maximization problem is formulated for the secondary network by jointly optimizing the PT transmit beamforming vector, the SIB-RIS reflection coefficients, and the power-splitting ratios. To tackle the intricately-coupled non-convex problem, an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) optimization framework is developed, which leverages fractional programming via Lagrangian dual and quadratic transforms together with a difference-of-convex programming approach. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed SIB-RIS-assisted NOMA CR system yields substantial WSSE gains over both orthogonal multiple access (OMA)-based and active antenna schemes. Moreover, a 2-bit discrete-phase SIB-RIS implementation achieves competitive to which WSSE performance, confirming the practicality of the low-resolution architecture.
