Stacked Intelligent Metasurface for End-to-End OFDM System

Stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM) and dual-polarized SIM (DPSIM) enabled wave-domain signal processing have emerged as promising research directions for offloading baseband digital processing tasks and efficiently simplifying transceiver design. However, existing architectures are limited to employing SIM (DPSIM) for a single communication function, such as precoding or combining. To further enhance the overall performance of SIM (DPSIM)-assisted systems and achieve end-to-end (E2E) joint optimization from the transmitted bitstream to the received bitstream, we propose an SIM (DPSIM)-assisted E2E orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, in which traditional communication tasks such as channel coding, modulation, precoding, combining, demodulation, and channel decoding are performed synchronously within the electromagnetic (EM) forward propagation. Furthermore, inspired by the idea of abstracting real metasurfaces as hidden layers of a neural network, we propose the EM neural network (EMNN) to enable the control of the E2E OFDM communication system. In addition, transfer learning is introduced into the model training, and a training and deployment framework for the EMNN is designed. Simulation results demonstrate that both SIM-assisted E2E OFDM systems and DPSIM-assisted E2E OFDM systems can achieve robust bitstream transmission under complex channel conditions. Our study highlights the application potential of EMNN and SIM (DPSIM)-assisted E2E OFDM systems in the design of next-generation transceivers.

Towards Secure ISAC Beamforming: How Many Dedicated Sensing Beams Are Required?

In this paper, sensing-assisted secure communication in a multi-user multi-eavesdropper integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system is investigated. Confidential communication signals and dedicated sensing signals are jointly transmitted by a base station (BS) to simultaneously serve users and sense aerial eavesdroppers (AEs). A sum rate maximization problem is formulated under AEs' Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) and sensing Signal-to-Clutter-plus-Noise Ratio (SCNR) constraints. A fractional-programming-based alternating optimization algorithm is developed to solve this problem for fully digital arrays, where successive convex approximation (SCA) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) are leveraged to handle non-convex constraints. Furthermore, the minimum number of dedicated sensing beams is analyzed via a worst-case rank bound, upon which the proposed beamforming design is further extended to the hybrid analog-digital (HAD) array architecture, where the unit-modulus constraint is addressed by manifold optimization. Simulation results demonstrate that only a small number of sensing beams are sufficient for both sensing and jamming AEs, and the proposed designs consistently outperform strong baselines while also revealing the communication-sensing trade-off.

Joint DOA and Attitude Sensing Based on Tri-Polarized Continuous Aperture Array

This paper investigates joint direction-of-arrival (DOA) and attitude sensing using tri-polarized continuous aperture arrays (CAPAs). By employing electromagnetic (EM) information theory, the spatially continuous received signals in tri-polarized CAPA are modeled, thereby enabling accurate DOA and attitude estimation. To facilitate subspace decomposition for continuous operators, an equivalent continuous-discrete transformation technique is developed. Moreover, both self- and cross-covariances of tri-polarized signals are exploited to construct a tri-polarized spectrum, significantly enhancing DOA estimation performance. Theoretical analyses reveal that the identifiability of attitude information fundamentally depends on the availability of prior target snapshots. Accordingly, two attitude estimation algorithms are proposed: one capable of estimating partial attitude information without prior knowledge, and the other achieving full attitude estimation when such knowledge is available. Numerical results demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of the proposed framework.

Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS)-Enabled UAV Delivery

A pinching-antenna systems (PASS)-enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) delivery framework is proposed, which exploits the capability of PASS to establish a strong line-of-sight link and reduce free-space pathloss.Aiming at minimizing the communication energy consumption in one cycle, a double-layer optimization (DLO) algorithm is developed by jointly optimizing the UAV delivery sequence and the pinching antenna (PA) activation vector. More specifically, at the outer layer, a hierarchical alternating optimization (HAO) scheme is proposed to tackle the NP-hard problem of delivery sequence planning, where a genetic algorithm performs global exploration to generate candidate solutions at the top-level, while a dynamic programming performs local refinement to obtain elite solutions at the lower-level. With determined UAV trajectory, at the inner layer, focus is placed on addressing the highly coupled mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem of PA activation vector optimization, where a pair of algorithms are proposed: 1) Branch-and-Bound (BnB) algorithm for finding global optimum; 2) incremental search and local refinement (ISLR) algorithm for reducing computational complexity. Simulation results indicate that: i) The proposed HAO-based delivery sequence planning scheme can effectively reduce the total flight distance, thereby decreasing flight time and communication energy consumption; ii) Both the proposed BnB and ISLR algorithms can achieve energy-efficient PA activation, with the former exhibiting better performance and the latter having lower complexity; iii) PASS outperforms the conventional multi-antenna systems, especially with higher communication rate requirements.

Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS): Power Radiation Model and Optimal Beamforming Design

Pinching-antenna systems (PASS) improve wireless links by configuring the locations of activated pinching antennas along dielectric waveguides, namely pinching beamforming. In this paper, a novel adjustable power radiation model is proposed for PASS, where power radiation ratios of pinching antennas can be flexibly controlled by tuning the spacing between pinching antennas and waveguides. A closed-form pinching antenna spacing arrangement strategy is derived to achieve the commonly assumed equal-power radiation. Based on this, a practical PASS framework relying on discrete activation is considered, where pinching antennas can only be activated among a set of predefined locations. A transmit power minimization problem is formulated, which jointly optimizes the transmit beamforming, pinching beamforming, and the numbers of activated pinching antennas, subject to each user's minimum rate requirement. (1) To solve the resulting highly coupled mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, branch-and-bound (BnB)-based algorithms are proposed for both single-user and multi-user scenarios, which is guaranteed to converge to globally optimal solutions. (2) A low-complexity many-to-many matching algorithm is further developed. Combined with the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) theory, locally optimal and pairwise-stable solutions are obtained within polynomial-time complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that: (i) PASS significantly outperforms conventional multi-antenna architectures, particularly when the number of users and the spatial range increase; and (ii) The proposed matching-based algorithm achieves near-optimal performance, resulting in only a slight performance loss while significantly reducing computational overheads. CRB minimization for PASS Assisted ISAC

A multiple waveguide PASS assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system is proposed, where the base station (BS) is equipped with transmitting pinching antennas (PAs) and receiving uniform linear array (ULA) antennas. The PASS-transmitting-ULA-receiving (PTUR) BS transmits the communication and sensing signals through the stretched PAs on waveguides and collects the echo sensing signals with the mounted ULA. Based on this configuration, a target sensing Cramer Rao Bound (CRB) minimization problem is formulated under communication quality-of-service (QoS) constraints, power budget constraints, and PA deployment constraints. An alternating optimization (AO) method is employed to address the formulated non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PASS assisted ISAC framework achieves superior performance over benchmark schemes.

Near-Field Integrated Sensing and Communications

A near-field integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) framework is proposed, which introduces an additional distance dimension for both sensing and communications compared to the conventional far-field system. In particular, the Cramer-Rao bound for the near-field joint distance and angle sensing is derived, which is minimized subject to the minimum communication rate requirement of each user. Both fully digital antennas and hybrid digital and analog antennas are investigated. For fully digital antennas, a globally optimal solution of the ISAC waveform is obtained via semidefinite relaxation. For hybrid antennas, a high-quality solution is obtained through two-stage optimization. Numerical results demonstrate the performance gain introduced by the additional distance dimension of the near-field ISAC over the far-field ISAC.

Secure Multicast Communications with Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS)

This article investigates secure multicast communications in pinching-antenna systems (PASS), where pinching beamforming is enabled by adaptively adjusting pinching antenna (PAs) positions along waveguides to improve multicast security. Specifically, a PASS-based secure multicast framework is proposed, in which joint optimization of transmit and pinching beamforming is conducted to maximize the secrecy multicast rate. i) For the single-group multicast scenario, an alternating optimization (AO) framework is employed, where the pinching beamformer is updated via an element-wise sequential optimization method. The transmit beamformer is designed via a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) formulation for an upper-bound solution, while a Dinkelbach-alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) offers a low-complexity alternative. ii) For the multi-group multicast scenario, transmit and pinching beamformers are alternately optimized under a majorization-minimization (MM) framework. The transmit beamformer is obtained via SDR or an efficient second-order cone programming (SOCP) method, while the pinching beamformer is updated through MM-based element-wise sequential update strategy. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate that: (i) PASS consistently outperform conventional fixed-location antenna architectures in terms of secrecy performance across various configurations; and (ii) the performance advantage of PASS over fixed-location architectures becomes more significant with increased service region, larger antenna arrays, and higher user and eavesdropper densities.

Sum Capacity Characterization of Pinching Antennas-assisted Multiple Access Channels

Pinching antenna system (PASS) has recently shown its promising ability to flexibly reconfigure wireless channels via dynamically adjusting the positions of pinching antennas over a dielectric waveguide, termed as pinching beamforming. This paper studies the fundamental limit of the sum rate for a PASS-assisted multiple access channel, where multiple users transmit individual messages to a base station under the average power constraint. To this end, a dynamic pinching beamforming setup is conceived, where multiple pinching beamforming vectors are employed in a transmission period and the capacity-achieving non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based scheme is considered. For the ideal case with an asymptotically large number of pinching beamforming vectors, the optimal transmission scheme is unveiled to carry out alternating transmission among each user whose channel power gain is maximized with the tailored pinching beamforming. This implies that NOMA is not needed for achieving the sum capacity and the required optimal number of pinching beamforming vectors is equal to the number of users. With this insight, the corresponding sum rate is derived in closed-form expression, which serves as the upper bound of the sum rate. Inspired by this result, a lower bound of the sum rate under an arbitrarily finite number of pinching beamforming vectors is obtained. Numerical results validate our theoretical findings and also illustrate the practical significance of using dynamic pinching beamforming to improve the sum rate.

Uplink and Downlink Communications in Segmented Waveguide-Enabled Pinching-Antenna Systems (SWANs)

A segmented waveguide-enabled pinching-antenna system (SWAN) is proposed, in which a segmented waveguide composed of multiple short dielectric waveguide segments is employed to radiate or receive signals through the pinching antennas (PAs) deployed on each segment. Based on this architecture, three practical operating protocols are proposed: segment selection (SS), segment aggregation (SA), and segment multiplexing (SM). For uplink SWAN communications, where one PA is activated per segment, the segmented structure eliminates the inter-antenna radiation effect, i.e., signals captured by one PA may re-radiate through other PAs along the same waveguide. This yields a tractable and physically consistent uplink signal model for a multi-PA pinching-antenna system (PASS), which has not been established for conventional PASS using a single long waveguide. Building on this model, PA placement algorithms are proposed to maximize the uplink signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Closed-form expressions for the received SNR under the three protocols are derived, and the corresponding scaling laws with respect to the number of segments are analyzed. It is proven that the segmented architecture reduces both the average PA-to-user distance and the PA-to-feed distance, thereby mitigating both large-scale path loss and in-waveguide propagation loss. These results are extended to downlink SWAN communications, where multiple PAs are activated per segment, and PA placement methods are proposed to maximize the downlink received SNR under the three protocols. Numerical results demonstrate that: \romannumeral1) among the three protocols, SM achieves the best performance, followed by SA and then SS; and \romannumeral2) for all protocols, the proposed SWAN achieves a higher SNR than conventional PASS with a single long waveguide in both uplink and downlink scenarios.

Generative Artificial Intelligence for Beamforming in Low-Altitude Economy

The growth of low-altitude economy (LAE) has driven a rising demand for efficient and secure communication. However, conventional beamforming optimization techniques struggle in the complex LAE environments. In this context, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) methods provide a promising solution. In this article, we first introduce the core concepts of LAE and the roles of beamforming in advanced communication technologies for LAE. We then examine their interrelation, followed by an analysis of the limitations of conventional beamforming methods. Next, we provide an overview of how GenAI methods enhance the process of beamforming, with a focus on its applications in LAE. Furthermore, we present a case study using a generative diffusion model (GDM)-based algorithm to enhance the performance of aerial collaborative beamforming-enabled remote secure communications in LAE and simulation results verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Finally, promising research opportunities are identified.

Pinching Antenna System (PASS) Enhanced Covert Communications: Against Warden via Sensing

A sensing-aided covert communication network empowered by pinching antenna systems (PASS) is proposed in this work. Unlike conventional fixed-position MIMO arrays, PASS dynamically reconfigures its pinching antennas (PAs) closer to the legitimate user, substantially enhancing covertness. To further secure the adversary's channel state information (CSI), a sensing function is leveraged to track the malicious warden's movements. In particular, this paper first proposes an extended Kalman filter (EKF) based approach to fulfilling the tracking function. Building on this, a covert communication problem is formulated with a joint design of beamforming, artificial noise (AN) signals, and the position of PAs. Then, the beamforming and AN design subproblems are resolved jointly with a subspace approach, while the PA position optimization subproblem is handled by a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach by treating the evolution of the warden's mobility status as a temporally corrected process. Numerical results are presented and demonstrate that: i) the EKF approach can accurately track the warden's CSI with low complexity, ii) the effectiveness of the proposed solution is verified by its outperformance over the greedy and searching-based benchmarks, and iii) with new design degrees of freedom (DoFs), the performance of PASS is superior to the conventional fully-digital MIMO systems.

Multiport Network Modeling and Optimization for Reconfigurable Pinching-Antenna Systems

A reconfigurable pinching-antenna system (PASS) is presented, endowing pinching antennas (PAs) with both amplitude- and phase-controllable radiation beyond conventional implementations. To characterize this feature, a general and physically consistent model is established for PASS via multiport network theory. Within this model, the fundamental constraint of ideal reconfigurability of PAs is identified, allowing the full control of signal amplitudes and phases. A practical directional-coupler (DC)-based PA model is then proposed, enabling both amplitude-only control and amplitude-constrained phase control. Beamforming optimization is investigated for both ideal and practical cases: an optimal solution is obtained for ideal PAs, whereas a high-quality iterative algorithm is developed for DC-based PAs. Numerical results suggest that in single-user scenarios: (i) with optimized PA positions, performance gains arise primarily from amplitude reconfigurability and DC-based PAs approach ideal performance, and (ii) with fixed PA positions, both amplitude and phase reconfigurability are critical and DC-based PAs incur non-negligible loss.

Near-Field Integrated Sensing and Communications for Secure UAV Networks

A novel near-field integrated sensing and communications framework for secure unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks with high time efficiency is proposed. A ground base station (GBS) with large aperture size communicates with one communication UAV (C-UAV) under the existence of one eavesdropping UAV (E-UAV), where the artificial noise (AN) is employed for both jamming and sensing purpose. Given that the E-UAV's motion model is unknown at the GBS, we first propose a near-field localization and trajectory tracking scheme. Specifically, exploiting the variant Doppler shift observations over the spatial domain in the near field, the E-UAV's three-dimensional (3D) velocities are estimated from echo signals. To provide the timely correction of location prediction errors, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is adopted to fuse the predicted states and the measured ones. Subsequently, based on the real-time predicated location of the E-UAV, we further propose a joint GBS beamforming and C-UAV trajectory design scheme for maximizing the instantaneous secrecy rate, while guaranteeing the sensing accuracy constraint. To solve the resultant non-convex problem, an alternating optimization approach is developed, where the near-field GBS beamforming and the C-UAV trajectory design subproblems are iteratively solved by exploiting the successive convex approximation method. Finally, our numerical results unveil that: 1) the E-UAV's 3D velocities and location can be accurately estimated in real time with our proposed framework by exploiting the near-field spherical wave propagation; and 2) the proposed framework achieves superior secrecy rate compared to benchmark schemes and closely approaches the performance when the E-UAV trajectory is perfectly known.

Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS)-based Indoor Positioning

Pinching antenna (PA), a flexible waveguide integrated with dielectric particles, intelligently reconstructs line-of-sight channels. Utilizing its geometric deterministic model and meter-level reconstruction, PA systems (PASS) are applied to uplink indoor positioning. In this paper, the uplink positioning system model for PASS is firstly proposed. A PASS-based received signal strength indication (RSSI) method is proposed to measure the distance from the users to each PA, which is efficient and suitable for PASS. PASS-based weighted least squares (WLS) algorithm is designed to calculate the two-dimensional coordinates of the users. Several critical observations can be drawn from our results: i) More PAs on the waveguide improves the positioning accuracy and robustness. ii) When the number of PAs exceeds a certain threshold, the performance gain becomes marginal. iii) User locations between and near PAs yield superior positioning accuracy.

Subspace Fitting Approach for Wideband Near-Field Localization

Two subspace fitting approaches are proposed for wideband near-field localization. Unlike in conventional far-field systems, where distance and angle can be estimated separately, spherical wave propagation in near-field systems couples these parameters. We therefore derive a frequency-domain near-field signal model for multi-target wideband systems and develop a subspace fitting-based MUSIC method that jointly estimates distance and angle. To reduce complexity, a Fresnel approximation MUSIC algorithm is further introduced to decouple the distance and angle parameters. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of both proposed approaches.

Cramér-Rao Bound for Direct Position Estimation in OFDM Based Cellular Systems

Although direct position estimation (DPE) has been demonstrated to offer enhanced robustness in GNSS receivers, its theoretical limits and performance in OFDM based positioning systems remain largely unexplored. In this paper, the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) for DPE using OFDM based cellular signals is derived and benchmarked against the conventional two-step positioning method to assess their relative performance in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) dominated multipath environments. Numerical results reveal that 1) the DPE method consistently outperforms the two-step approach in OFDM systems under all evaluated conditions; 2) a large bandwidth is crucial in both methods, and increasing subcarrier spacing is more beneficial for a fixed bandwidth; 3) utilizing multiple OFDM symbols for positioning leads to substantial improvements in localization accuracy compared to relying on a single symbol. However, further increasing the number of symbols yields marginal improvements while significantly increasing computational complexity.

DOA Estimation via Continuous Aperture Arrays: MUSIC and CRLB

Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using continuous aperture array (CAPA) is studied. Compared to the conventional spatially discrete array (SPDA), CAPA significantly enhances the spatial degrees-of-freedoms (DoFs) for DOA estimation, but its infinite-dimensional continuous signals render the conventional estimation algorithm non-applicable. To address this challenge, a new multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm is proposed for CAPAs. In particular, an equivalent continuous-discrete transformation is proposed to facilitate the eigendecomposition of continuous operators. Subsequently, the MUSIC spectrum is accurately approximated using the Gauss-Legendre quadrature, effectively reducing the computational complexity. Furthermore, the Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) for DOA estimation using CAPAs are analyzed for both cases with and without priori knowledge of snapshot signals. It is theoretically proved that CAPAs significantly improve the DOA estimation accuracy compared to traditional SPDAs. Numerical results further validate this insight and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed MUSIC algorithm for CAPA. The proposed method achieves near-optimal estimation performance while maintaining a low computational complexity.
