Spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates in a toroidal trap: even-petal-number necklacelike state and persistent flow

Spin-orbit coupling has novel spin-flip symmetries, a spin-1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate owns meaningful interactions, and a toroidal trap is topologically nontrivial. We incorporate the three together and study the ground-state phase diagram in a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with a toroidal trap. The spin-flip symmetries give rise to two different interesting phases: persistent flows with a unit phase winding difference between three components, and necklace states with even petal-number. The existing parameter regimes and properties of these phases are characterized by two-dimension numerical calculations and an azimuthal analytical one-dimension model.

Creating moving gap solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

A simple and efficient method to create gap solitons is proposed in a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. We find that a free expansion along the spin-orbit coupling dimension can generate two moving gap solitons, which are identified from a generalized massive Thirring model. The dynamics of gap solitons can be controlled by adjusting spin-orbit coupling parameters.

GTG-Shapley: Efficient and Accurate Participant Contribution Evaluation in Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) bridges the gap between collaborative machine learning and preserving data privacy. To sustain the long-term operation of an FL ecosystem, it is important to attract high quality data owners with appropriate incentive schemes. As an important building block of such incentive schemes, it is essential to fairly evaluate participants' contribution to the performance of the final FL model without exposing their private data. Shapley Value (SV)-based techniques have been widely adopted to provide fair evaluation of FL participant contributions. However, existing approaches incur significant computation costs, making them difficult to apply in practice. In this paper, we propose the Guided Truncation Gradient Shapley (GTG-Shapley) approach to address this challenge. It reconstructs FL models from gradient updates for SV calculation instead of repeatedly training with different combinations of FL participants. In addition, we design a guided Monte Carlo sampling approach combined with within-round and between-round truncation to further reduce the number of model reconstructions and evaluations required, through extensive experiments under diverse realistic data distribution settings. The results demonstrate that GTG-Shapley can closely approximate actual Shapley values, while significantly increasing computational efficiency compared to the state of the art, especially under non-i.i.d. settings.

FocusNetv2: Imbalanced Large and Small Organ Segmentation with Adversarial Shape Constraint for Head and Neck CT Images

Radiotherapy is a treatment where radiation is used to eliminate cancer cells. The delineation of organs-at-risk (OARs) is a vital step in radiotherapy treatment planning to avoid damage to healthy organs. For nasopharyngeal cancer, more than 20 OARs are needed to be precisely segmented in advance. The challenge of this task lies in complex anatomical structure, low-contrast organ contours, and the extremely imbalanced size between large and small organs. Common segmentation methods that treat them equally would generally lead to inaccurate small-organ labeling. We propose a novel two-stage deep neural network, FocusNetv2, to solve this challenging problem by automatically locating, ROI-pooling, and segmenting small organs with specifically designed small-organ localization and segmentation sub-networks while maintaining the accuracy of large organ segmentation. In addition to our original FocusNet, we employ a novel adversarial shape constraint on small organs to ensure the consistency between estimated small-organ shapes and organ shape prior knowledge. Our proposed framework is extensively tested on both self-collected dataset of 1,164 CT scans and the MICCAI Head and Neck Auto Segmentation Challenge 2015 dataset, which shows superior performance compared with state-of-the-art head and neck OAR segmentation methods.

Effective Algorithms for Optimal Portfolio Deleveraging Problem with Cross Impact

We investigate the optimal portfolio deleveraging (OPD) problem with permanent and temporary price impacts, where the objective is to maximize equity while meeting a prescribed debt/equity requirement. We take the real situation with cross impact among different assets into consideration. The resulting problem is, however, a non-convex quadratic program with a quadratic constraint and a box constraint, which is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we first develop a successive convex optimization (SCO) approach for solving the OPD problem and show that the SCO algorithm converges to a KKT point of its transformed problem. Second, we propose an effective global algorithm for the OPD problem, which integrates the SCO method, simple convex relaxation and a branch-and-bound framework, to identify a global optimal solution to the OPD problem within a pre-specified $ε$-tolerance. We establish the global convergence of our algorithm and estimate its complexity. We also conduct numerical experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms with both the real data and the randomly generated medium- and large-scale OPD problem instances.

Temporal distinguishability in Hong-Ou-Mandel interference: Generation and characterization of high-dimensional frequency entanglement

High-dimensional quantum entanglement is currently one of the most prolific fields in quantum information processing due to its high information capacity and error resilience. A versatile method for harnessing high-dimensional entanglement has long been hailed as an absolute necessity in the exploration of quantum science and technologies. Here we exploit Hong-Ou-Mandel interference to manipulate discrete frequency entanglement in arbitrary-dimensional Hilbert space. The generation and characterization of two-, four- and six-dimensional frequency entangled qudits are theoretically and experimentally investigated, allowing for the estimation of entanglement dimensionality in the whole state space. Additionally, our strategy can be generalized to engineer higher-dimensional entanglement in other photonic degrees of freedom. Our results may provide a more comprehensive understanding of frequency shaping and interference phenomena, and pave the way to more complex high-dimensional quantum information processing protocols.

Coherent generation of the complete high-dimensional Bell basis by adaptive pump modulation

The Bell basis, a set of maximally entangled biphoton state, is a critical prerequisite towards quantum information processing, and many quantum applications have highlighted the requirement for the manipulation of high-dimensional Bell basis. While the Bell states can be created by using ingenious single-photon quantum gates, its implementation complexity in higher dimensions is significantly increased. Here we present an elaborate approach to show that the adaptive pump modulation enable the efficient preparation of Bell basis in arbitrary-dimensional Hilbert space. A complete set of four-dimensional orbital angular momentum Bell states are experimentally created, yielding high fidelities for certifying the entanglement dimensionality. Our strategy can be simply generalized to prepare more complex forms of quantum states even exploiting other physical degrees of freedom. Also, it can facilitate the use of high-dimensional entanglement in a variety of quantum protocols, in particular those requiring quantum dense coding.

Verification of high-dimensional entanglement generated in quantum interference

Entanglement and quantum interference are key ingredients in a variety of quantum information processing tasks. Harnessing the generation and characterization of entanglement in high-dimensional state spaces is a necessary prerequisite towards practical quantum protocols. Here, we use quantum interference on a beam splitter to engineer hyperentanglement in polarization and discrete frequency degrees of freedom (DOF). We show how independent measurements of polarization and frequency DOF allow for the verification of high-dimensional entanglement in the combined state space. These results may indicate new paths towards practical exploitation of entanglement stored in multiple degrees of freedom, in particular in the context of high-dimensional quantum information processing protocols.

RPN: A Residual Pooling Network for Efficient Federated Learning

Federated learning is a distributed machine learning framework which enables different parties to collaboratively train a model while protecting data privacy and security. Due to model complexity, network unreliability and connection in-stability, communication cost has became a major bottleneck for applying federated learning to real-world applications. Current existing strategies are either need to manual setting for hyperparameters, or break up the original process into multiple steps, which make it hard to realize end-to-end implementation. In this paper, we propose a novel compression strategy called Residual Pooling Network (RPN). Our experiments show that RPN not only reduce data transmission effectively, but also achieve almost the same performance as compared to standard federated learning. Our new approach performs as an end-to-end procedure, which should be readily applied to all CNN-based model training scenarios for improvement of communication efficiency, and hence make it easy to deploy in real-world application without much human intervention.

Bright solitons in a spin-tensor-momentum-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Synthetic spin-tensor-momentum coupling has recently been proposed to realize in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Here we study bright solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-tensor-momentum coupling and spin-orbit coupling. The properties and dynamics of spin-tensor-momentum-coupled and spin-orbit-coupled bright solitons are identified to be different. We contribute the difference to the different symmetries.

FedVision: An Online Visual Object Detection Platform Powered by Federated Learning

Visual object detection is a computer vision-based artificial intelligence (AI) technique which has many practical applications (e.g., fire hazard monitoring). However, due to privacy concerns and the high cost of transmitting video data, it is highly challenging to build object detection models on centrally stored large training datasets following the current approach. Federated learning (FL) is a promising approach to resolve this challenge. Nevertheless, there currently lacks an easy to use tool to enable computer vision application developers who are not experts in federated learning to conveniently leverage this technology and apply it in their systems. In this paper, we report FedVision - a machine learning engineering platform to support the development of federated learning powered computer vision applications. The platform has been deployed through a collaboration between WeBank and Extreme Vision to help customers develop computer vision-based safety monitoring solutions in smart city applications. Over four months of usage, it has achieved significant efficiency improvement and cost reduction while removing the need to transmit sensitive data for three major corporate customers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first real application of FL in computer vision-based tasks.

Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry on a biphoton beat note

Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, the fact that identical photons that arrive simultaneously on different input ports of a beam splitter bunch into a common output port, can be used to measure optical delays between different paths. It is generally assumed that great precision in the measurement requires that photons contain many frequencies, i.e., a large bandwidth. Here we challenge this well-known assumption and show that the use of two well-separated frequencies embedded in a quantum entangled state (discrete color entanglement) suffices to achieve great precision. We determine optimum working points using a Fisher Information analysis and demonstrate the experimental feasibility of this approach by detecting thermally-induced delays in an optical fiber. These results may significantly facilitate the use of quantum interference for quantum sensing, by avoiding some stringent conditions such as the requirement for large bandwidth signals.

Polarization entanglement by time-reversed Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

Sources of entanglement are an enabling resource in quantum technology, and pushing the limits of generation rate and quality of entanglement is a necessary pre-requisite towards practical applications. Here, we present an ultra-bright source of polarization-entangled photon pairs based on time-reversed Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. By superimposing four pair-creation possibilities on a polarization beam splitter, pairs of identical photons are separated into two spatial modes without the usual requirement for wavelength distinguishability or non-collinear emission angles. Our source yields high-fidelity polarization entanglement and high pair-generation rates without any requirement for active interferometric stabilization, which makes it an ideal candidate for a variety of applications, in particular those requiring indistinguishable photons.

FocusNet: Imbalanced Large and Small Organ Segmentation with an End-to-End Deep Neural Network for Head and Neck CT Images

In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep neural network for solving the problem of imbalanced large and small organ segmentation in head and neck (HaN) CT images. To conduct radiotherapy planning for nasopharyngeal cancer, more than 10 organs-at-risk (normal organs) need to be precisely segmented in advance. However, the size ratio between large and small organs in the head could reach hundreds. Directly using such imbalanced organ annotations to train deep neural networks generally leads to inaccurate small-organ label maps. We propose a novel end-to-end deep neural network to solve this challenging problem by automatically locating, ROI-pooling, and segmenting small organs with specifically designed small-organ sub-networks while maintaining the accuracy of large organ segmentation. A strong main network with densely connected atrous spatial pyramid pooling and squeeze-and-excitation modules is used for segmenting large organs, where large organs' label maps are directly output. For small organs, their probabilistic locations instead of label maps are estimated by the main network. High-resolution and multi-scale feature volumes for each small organ are ROI-pooled according to their locations and are fed into small-organ networks for accurate segmenting small organs. Our proposed network is extensively tested on both collected real data and the \emph{MICCAI Head and Neck Auto Segmentation Challenge 2015} dataset, and shows superior performance compared with state-of-the-art segmentation methods.

mu-Forcing: Training Variational Recurrent Autoencoders for Text Generation

It has been previously observed that training Variational Recurrent Autoencoders (VRAE) for text generation suffers from serious uninformative latent variables problem. The model would collapse into a plain language model that totally ignore the latent variables and can only generate repeating and dull samples. In this paper, we explore the reason behind this issue and propose an effective regularizer based approach to address it. The proposed method directly injects extra constraints on the posteriors of latent variables into the learning process of VRAE, which can flexibly and stably control the trade-off between the KL term and the reconstruction term, making the model learn dense and meaningful latent representations. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms several strong baselines and can make the model learn interpretable latent variables and generate diverse meaningful sentences. Furthermore, the proposed method can perform well without using other strategies, such as KL annealing.

Nonlinear dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Single-particle dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate has recently been investigated in experiments that explore the physics of Landau-Zener tunneling and of the Zitterbewegung. In this paper, we study the influence of a nonlinearity due to interactions on these dynamics and show that the dispersion relation develops interesting loop strucures. The atoms can move along the nonlinear dispersion curve in the presence of a weak acceleration force and we show that the loops lead to straightforward nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling. However, we find that for the Zitterbewegung, induced by a sudden quench in the spin-orbit coupling parameters, the nonlinear dispersion is irrelevant.

The $A_α$-spectral radius of graphs with given degree sequence

Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$, and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For any real $α\in[0,1]$, write $A_α(G)$ for the matrix $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$$ This paper presents some extremal results about the spectral radius $ρ(A_α(G))$ of $A_α(G)$ that generalize previous results about $ρ(A_0(G))$ and $ρ(A_{\frac{1}{2}}(G))$. In this paper, we give some results on graph perturbation for $A_α$-matrix with $α\in [0,1)$. As applications, we characterize all extremal trees with the maximum $A_α$-spectral radius in the set of all trees with prescribed degree sequence firstly. Furthermore, we characterize the unicyclic graphs that have the largest $A_α$-spectral radius for a given unicycilc degree sequence.
