BranPO: Scalable Contrastive Branch Sampling for Long-Horizon Agentic Reinforcement Learning

Agentic reinforcement learning enables large language models to perform multi-turn planning and tool use, but long-horizon training remains challenging under sparse trajectory-level rewards, where a single outcome is uniformly assigned to all decisions. Prior methods introduce finer-grained supervision via tree-based exploration or process-level evaluation, but often incur high cost or produce noisy credit signals. In agentic trajectories, early mistakes may still be corrected by later actions, while seemingly promising intermediate states can fail due to poor subsequent decisions. We call this property non-monotonic correctness, which makes outcome rewards or state values insufficient for guiding what actions should be taken from each state. To address this, we propose Branching Relative Policy Optimization (\textbf{BranPO}), a value-free method that constructs localized contrastive supervision without dense rewards. BranPO truncates trajectories at intermediate prefixes and resamples continuations to form contrastive branches that share the same prefix but diverge in final outcomes, thereby isolating decisions that drive success or failure. We further introduce difficulty-aware branch sampling and Redundant Step Masking to improve sampling efficiency and suppress redundant updates. Experiments show that BranPO consistently outperforms diverse baseline categories across multiple multi-hop QA benchmarks without additional training cost, and generalizes to broader long-horizon agentic tasks with consistent improvements. ECG-Chat: A Large ECG-Language Model for Cardiac Disease Diagnosis

The success of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) in the medical auxiliary field shows great potential, allowing patients to engage in conversations using physiological signal data. However, general MLLMs perform poorly in cardiac disease diagnosis, particularly in the integration of ECG data analysis and medical report generation, mainly due to the complexity of ECG data analysis and the gap between text and ECG signal modalities. To address these issues, we propose ECG-Chat, a multitask MLLMs focused on ECG medical report generation, providing multimodal conversational capabilities based on cardiology knowledge. We propose a contrastive learning approach that integrates ECG waveform data with text reports, aligning ECG features with reports in a fine-grained manner. This method also results in an ECG encoder that excels in zero-shot report retrieval tasks. Additionally, expanding existing datasets, we constructed a 19k ECG diagnosis dataset and a 25k multi-turn dialogue dataset for training and fine-tuning ECG-Chat, which provides professional diagnostic and conversational capabilities. Furthermore, ECG-Chat can generate comprehensive ECG analysis reports through an automated LaTeX generation pipeline. We established a benchmark for the ECG report generation task and tested our model on multiple baselines. ECG-Chat achieved the best performance in classification, retrieval, and medical report generation tasks. Our code is available at https://github.com/YubaoZhao/ECG-Chat.

ECG-Expert-QA: A Benchmark for Evaluating Medical Large Language Models in Heart Disease Diagnosis

We present ECG-Expert-QA, a comprehensive multimodal dataset for evaluating diagnostic capabilities in electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation. It combines real-world clinical ECG data with systematically generated synthetic cases, covering 12 essential diagnostic tasks and totaling 47,211 expert-validated QA pairs. These encompass diverse clinical scenarios, from basic rhythm recognition to complex diagnoses involving rare conditions and temporal changes. A key innovation is the support for multi-turn dialogues, enabling the development of conversational medical AI systems that emulate clinician-patient or interprofessional interactions. This allows for more realistic assessment of AI models' clinical reasoning, diagnostic accuracy, and knowledge integration. Constructed through a knowledge-guided framework with strict quality control, ECG-Expert-QA ensures linguistic and clinical consistency, making it a high-quality resource for advancing AI-assisted ECG interpretation. It challenges models with tasks like identifying subtle ischemic changes and interpreting complex arrhythmias in context-rich scenarios. To promote research transparency and collaboration, the dataset, accompanying code, and prompts are publicly released at https://github.com/Zaozzz/ECG-Expert-QA
