Tunable high-charge relativistic electron beams via direct laser acceleration in hohlraum-preheated foam targets

Direct laser acceleration (DLA) in near-critical-density (NCD) plasmas can efficiently generate high-charge relativistic electron beams, yet beam parameters depend critically on precise plasma state manipulation. Solid-ablation NCD plasmas evolve rapidly, posing severe controllability challenges. We produce NCD plasma via indirectly heating foam targets with ns laser driven hohlraum soft X-ray. Electrons are generated through irradiating the plasma with another picosecond laser. Tuning the laser pulse delay $\tau$ enables control of plasma profiles and beam parameters. Experiments show that when the foam is heated ($\tau$ = 6 ns, 9 ns), the beam exhibits $T \sim 13$ MeV effective temperature, $E_k \sim 80$ MeV cutoff energy, and hundreds of nC/sr charge for $E_k > 7.5$ MeV. These values are significantly higher than those from solid-foil ($T$ $\sim$ 2.7 MeV, $E_k$ $\sim$ 20 MeV, $Q$ $\sim$ 9 nC/sr) and cold-foam ($T$ $\sim$ 12 MeV, $E_k$ $\sim$ 50 MeV, $Q$ $\sim$ 5 nC/sr) interactions. At a longer delay of $\tau$ = 15 ns, the charge increases further while the temperature decreases, and at a shorter delay of $\tau$ = 3 ns, both temperature and charge are lower. 3D PIC simulations link these observations to the interplay between the microstructure of the cold foam and the evolving plasma density profile at different delay times, which together determine the beam charge, effective temperature, and divergence. The finding provides a routine to generate and tailor the relativistic electron beams, which is essential for designing laser-driven electron sources for high energy density physics and photonuclear reaction applications.

The Minkowski problem of $p$-affine dual curvature measures

For $p\in (-\infty,0)\cup(0,1)$ and a convex body $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with the origin in its interior, we construct the family of $p$-affine dual curvature measures $\mathcal{I}_p(K,\cdot)$ with respect to $K$. The affine-invariant measure $\widetilde{C}_{n-1}^{\mathrm{a}}(K, \cdot)$ given in the paper [9] is the limit case of $\mathcal{I}_p(K,\cdot)$ as $p\rightarrow 1^-$. The classical cone-volume measure is the limit case of the affine measures $2|p|\mathcal{I}_p(K,\cdot)/(n^2V(\mathrm{I}_pK))$ when $p\rightarrow 0$ and $V(K)=2$, where $\mathrm{I}_pK$ denotes the $L_p$ intersection body of $K$. The Minkowski problems for the $p$-affine dual curvature measures are proposed and studied. Specifically, we give a sufficient condition for the existence of a solution to the even Minkowski problem for $p$-affine dual curvature measure. Moreover, a necessary condition is given when $p\in (0,1)$. The smooth case of this Minkowski problem is equivalent to solving a new type of partial differential equations with respect to $p$-cosine transforms.

Supervisory Measurement-Guided Noise Covariance Estimation: Discussing Forward and Reverse Differentiation

Reliable state estimation depends on accurately modeled noise covariances, which are difficult to determine in practice. This paper formulates the noise covariance estimation as a bilevel optimization problem that factorizes the joint likelihood of primary and supervisory measurements to reconcile information exploitation with computational tractability. The factorization converts the nested Bayesian dependency into a Markov-chain structure, allowing efficient computation. At the lower level, a Kalman filter with state augmentation performs such computation. Meanwhile, closed-form forward and reverse differentiation provide efficient gradients for the upper-level updates, and we compare the two models' space and time complexities to inform their practical selection. The upper level subsequently refines the noise covariances to guide the lower-level estimation. Taken together, the proposed algorithms offer a systematic and computationally efficient approach to noise covariance estimation in linear Gaussian systems.

Bandwidth-Constrained Sensor Scheduling: A Trade-off between Fairness and Efficiency

We address fair sensor scheduling over bandwidth-constrained communication channels. While existing literature on fair scheduling overlooks overall system efficiency, we introduce a novel $q$-fairness framework to balance efficiency and fairness by adjusting the parameter $q$. Specifically, for two communication scenarios, we: (i) derive the optimal schedule under limited communication rates, and (ii) propose two suboptimal algorithms under limited simultaneous sensor transmissions and analyze their performance gaps relative to the optimal strategy. Simulations demonstrate that our algorithms effectively balance efficiency and fairness in both cases.

Express Diagnostic of Intense Laser-driven MeV Radiation Source using Copper Isotopes

We explored the generation and diagnosis of high-brightness MeV bremsstrahlung radiation caused by intense beam of relativistic electrons propagating in a tantalum converter. The intense electron beam was produced through direct laser acceleration mechanism in the interaction of relativistic high-power sub-ps laser pulse with near critical density plasma. We propose to detect the divergence angle and photon fluence of high-brightness and high-energy gamma radiation source based on the nuclear activation method. The radioactive 62^Cu was generated through photonuclear reactions 63^Cu(gamma,n) 62^Cu and the subsequent beta^+ decay of 62^Cu was measured to derive characteristics of the gamma radiation source. This method provides an express approach to diagnose the laser-driven MeV radiation source and a potential efficient way to produce 62^Cu isotopes.

Wormhole Solutions and Pre-inflationary Epoch in $F(R, T)$ Gravity with Axion Fields

This study investigates axion-dilaton wormhole solutions within the framework of $F(R,T)$ gravity to resolve the issue of insufficient inflationary e-folds in the no-boundary proposal. By examining both Giddings-Strominger and expanding wormhole solutions in asymptotically flat Euclidean spacetime, we demonstrate that the matter-geometry coupling induces complex dynamical oscillations in the scale factor and the dilaton field. These complex oscillatory modes significantly reduce the Euclidean action compared to standard general relativity, consequently enhancing the nucleation probability. Furthermore, we extend this theoretical setup to a ``wineglass'' half-wormhole model in Euclidean Anti-de Sitter (EAdS) spacetime. Our analysis yields a specific constraint on the coupling parameter. This constraint introduces an unstable maximum in the potential and simultaneously decreases the action. The presence of this unstable maximum fundamentally alters the probability distribution of initial states, rendering the evolution of universes from high-potential regions far more probable. Consequently, this approach significantly increases the likelihood of long-lasting inflation, providing a theoretical pathway to reconcile the no-boundary proposal with astronomical observations requiring sustained cosmic expansion.

The $L_p$ Minkowski problems on affine dual quermassintegrals

In this paper, {we extend the affine dual curvature measures to the $L_p$ setting and solve the existence part of the corresponding Minkowski problem for non-symmetric discrete measures when $p>1$ and for symmetric measures when $p\geq0$.} When $p=0$, the $L_0$ Minkowski problem is the affine dual Minkowski problem, which is introduced and solved by Cai-Leng-Wu-Xi in [6].

A Communication-Efficient and Differentially-Private Distributed Generalized Nash Equilibrium Seeking Algorithm for Aggregative Games

This paper studies the distributed generalized Nash equilibrium seeking problem for aggregative games with coupling constraints, where each player optimizes its strategy depending on its local cost function and the estimated strategy aggregation. The information transmission in distributed networks may go beyond bandwidth capacity and eventuate communication bottlenecks. Therefore, we propose a novel communication-efficient distributed generalized Nash equilibrium seeking algorithm, in which the communication efficiency is improved by event-triggered communication and information compression methods. The proposed algorithm saves the transmitted rounds and bits of communication simultaneously. Specifically, by developing precise step size conditions, the proposed algorithm ensures provable convergence, and is proven to achieve $(0,\delta)$-differential privacy with a stochastic quantization scheme. In the end, simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Enhanced {\alpha} particle generation via proton-boron fusion reactions in laser-modulated plasma

Aneutronic and nonradioactive properties make the proton-boron fusion a prospective candidate for fusion energy production through reactions following p+$^{11}$B$\rightarrow$3${\alpha}$ (p-$^{11}$B). However, it is difficult to achieve a thermal fusion ignition, since the low reaction cross-sections for center-of-mass energy below $\sim$100 keV. To realize fusion energy gain, it is essential to consider utilization of the maximum cross-section at the resonant peak of p-$^{11}$B fusion, and explore the nuclear reactions in plasma environment. In this work, p-$^{11}$B reactions triggered by interactions between energetic proton beams and laser-ablated boron plasma have been investigated. More than 200 times enhancement of ${\alpha}$ particle emission efficiency (number ratio of escaping ${\alpha}$ particles and boron nuclei) in plasma has been observed, compared with the cold boron. The proton beam transport path modulated by strong electro-magnetic fields in plasma could dominate the enhanced ${\alpha}$ particle generation, due to a longer collisional length. In addition, an ${\alpha}$ particle yield up to 1$\times$10$^{10}$ /sr has been measured via the pitcher-catcher scheme in plasma. This work could benefit understanding of the plasma effects on nuclear reaction dynamics, and also enable opportunities to explore physics in laser fusion associated with advanced fusion fuels.

An Efficient Distributed Nash Equilibrium Seeking with Compressed and Event-triggered Communication

Distributed Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking problems for networked games have been widely investigated in recent years. Despite the increasing attention, communication expenditure is becoming a major bottleneck for scaling up distributed approaches within limited communication bandwidth between agents. To reduce communication cost, an efficient distributed NE seeking (ETC-DNES) algorithm is proposed to obtain an NE for games over directed graphs, where the communication efficiency is improved by event-triggered exchanges of compressed information among neighbors. ETC-DNES saves communication costs in both transmitted bits and rounds of communication. Furthermore, our method only requires the row-stochastic property of the adjacency matrix, unlike previous approaches that hinged on doubly-stochastic communication matrices. We provide convergence guarantees for ETC-DNES on games with restricted strongly monotone mappings and testify its efficiency with no sacrifice on the accuracy. The algorithm and analysis are extended to a compressed algorithm with stochastic event-triggered mechanism (SETC-DNES). In SETC-DNES, we introduce a random variable in the triggering condition to further enhance algorithm efficiency. We demonstrate that SETC-DNES guarantees linear convergence to the NE while achieving even greater reductions in communication costs compared to ETC-DNES. Finally, numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Charge equilibration of Laser-accelerated Carbon Ions in Foam Target

The charge equilibration of laser-accelerated carbon ion beams in 2 mg/cm3 foam target was investigated experimentally. The ions were generated through target normal sheath acceleration mechanism in laser-foil interaction scheme. This allows to get the equilibrium charge state in wide energy range near Bragg peak within a single shot. By using foam, the charge equilibration measurement in density regime between gas and solid state was firstly reached out experimentally. It was found that the theoretical predictions with tabulated cross section data for gas target greatly underestimated the charge states. The experimental data are in close agreement with both semi-empirical formula as well as rate equation predictions based on ion-solid interactions. The important role of target density effects that increase the ionization probability and decrease the electron capture probability through frequent multi-collisions in foam are demonstrated. The double electron processes are shown to have little influence on the average charge states. The findings are essential for high energy density physics research where the foams are widely used, and have impacts on a broad range of applications in medical, biological and material fields. The method also provides a new approach to investigate the interaction mechanism of swift heavy ions in matter by taking advantage of the laser-accelerated short-pulse wide-energy range ions.

Linear Convergent Distributed Nash Equilibrium Seeking with Compression

Information compression techniques are majorly employed to address the concern of reducing communication cost over peer-to-peer links. In this paper, we investigate distributed Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking problems in a class of non-cooperative games over directed graphs with information compression. To improve communication efficiency, a compressed distributed NE seeking (C-DNES) algorithm is proposed to obtain a NE for games, where the differences between decision vectors and their estimates are compressed. The proposed algorithm is compatible with a general class of compression operators, including both unbiased and biased compressors. Moreover, our approach only requires the adjacency matrix of the directed graph to be row-stochastic, in contrast to past works that relied on balancedness or specific global network parameters. It is shown that C-DNES not only inherits the advantages of conventional distributed NE algorithms, achieving linear convergence rate for games with restricted strongly monotone mappings, but also saves communication costs in terms of transmitted bits. Finally, numerical simulations illustrate the advantages of C-DNES in saving communication cost by an order of magnitude under different compressors.

Target density effects on charge tansfer of laser-accelerated carbon ions in dense plasma

We report on charge state measurements of laser-accelerated carbon ions in the energy range of several MeV penetrating a dense partially ionized plasma. The plasma was generated by irradiation of a foam target with laser-induced hohlraum radiation in the soft X-ray regime. We used the tri-cellulose acetate (C$_{9}$H$_{16}$O$_{8}$) foam of 2 mg/cm$^{-3}$ density, and $1$-mm interaction length as target material. This kind of plasma is advantageous for high-precision measurements, due to good uniformity and long lifetime compared to the ion pulse length and the interaction duration. The plasma parameters were diagnosed to be T$_{e}$=17 eV and n$_{e}$=4 $\times$ 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. The average charge states passing through the plasma were observed to be higher than those predicted by the commonly-used semiempirical formula. Through solving the rate equations, we attribute the enhancement to the target density effects which will increase the ionization rates on one hand and reduce the electron capture rates on the other hand. In previsous measurement with partially ionized plasma from gas discharge and z-pinch to laser direct irradiation, no target density effects were ever demonstrated. For the first time, we were able to experimentally prove that target density effects start to play a significant role in plasma near the critical density of Nd-Glass laser radiation. The finding is important for heavy ion beam driven high energy density physics and fast ignitions.

Optimization of Timepix3-based conventional Compton camera using electron track algorithm

The hybrid pixel detector Timepix3 allows the measurement of the time and energy deposition of an event simultaneously in each 55 $μ$m pixel, which makes Timepix3 a promising approach for a compact Compton camera. However, the angular resolution of Compton camera based on this kind of detector with high pixel density is usually degraded in imaging of MeV gamma-ray sources, because the diffusion of energetic Compton electron or photoelectron could trigger many pixels and lead to an inaccurate measurement of interaction position. In this study, an electron track algorithm is used to reconstruct the electron track and determine the interaction point. An demonstrative experiment was carried out, showing that the effect of this algorithm was significant. The angular resolution measures of a single layer Compton camera based on Timepix3 was enhanced to 12 degrees (FWHM) in imaging of a Co-60 gamma source.

A Tensor-BTD-based Modulation for Massive Unsourced Random Access

In this letter, we propose a novel tensor-based modulation scheme for massive unsourced random access. The proposed modulation can be deemed as a summation of third-order tensors, of which the factors are representatives of subspaces. A constellation design based on high-dimensional Grassmann manifold is presented for information encoding. The uniqueness of tensor decomposition provides theoretical guarantee for active user separation. Simulation results show that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art tensor-based modulation.

Harmonic Retrieval with $L_1$-Tucker Tensor Decomposition

Harmonic retrieval (HR) has a wide range of applications in the scenes where signals are modelled as a summation of sinusoids. Past works have developed a number of approaches to recover the original signals. Most of them rely on classical singular value decomposition, which are vulnerable to unexpected outliers. In this paper, we present new decomposition algorithms of third-order complex-valued tensors with $L_1$-principle component analysis ($L_1$-PCA) of complex data and apply them to a novel random access HR model in presence of outliers. We also develop a novel subcarrier recovery method for the proposed model. Simulations are designed to compare our proposed method with some existing tensor-based algorithms for HR. The results demonstrate the outlier-insensitivity of the proposed method.

Diagnostics for ultrashort X-ray pulses using silicon trackers

The spectrum of laser-plasma generated X-rays is very important, it characterizes electron dynamics in plasma and is basic for applications. However, the accuracies and efficiencies of existing methods to diagnose the spectrum of laser-plasma based X-ray pulse are not very high, especially in the range of several hundred keV. In this study, a new method based on electron tracks detection to measure the spectrum of laser-plasma produced X-ray pulses is proposed and demonstrated. Laser-plasma generated X-rays are scattered in a multi-pixel silicon tracker. Energies and scattering directions of Compton electrons can be extracted from the response of the detector, and then the spectrum of X-rays can be reconstructed. Simulations indicate that the energy resolution of this method is approximately 20% for X-rays from 200 to 550 keV for a silicon-on-insulator pixel detector with 12 $\rm μ$m pixel pitch and 500 $\rm μ$m depletion region thickness. The results of a proof-of-principle experiment based on a Timepix3 detector are also shown.
