A first-principles approach to nonlinear lattice dynamics: Anomalous spectra in PbTe

Here we introduce a new approach to compute the finite temperature lattice dynamics from first-principles via the newly developed slave mode expansion. We study PbTe where inelastic neutron scattering (INS) reveals strong signatures of nonlinearity as evidenced by anomalous features which emerge in the phonon spectra at finite temperature. Using our slave mode expansion in the classical limit, we compute the vibrational spectra and show remarkable agreement with temperature dependent INS measurements. Furthermore, we resolve experimental controversy by showing that there are no appreciable local nor global spontaneously broken symmetries at finite temperature and that the anomalous spectral features simply arise from two anharmonic interactions. Our approach should be broadly applicable across the periodic table.

Resonance and Double Negative Behavior in Metamaterials

A generic class of metamaterials is introduced and is shown to exhibit frequency dependent double negative effective properties. We develop a rigorous method for calculating the frequency intervals where either double negative or double positive effective properties appear and show how these intervals imply the existence of propagating Bloch waves inside sub-wavelength structures. The branches of the dispersion relation associated with Bloch modes are shown to be explicitly determined by the Dirichlet spectrum of the high dielectric phase and the generalized electrostatic spectra of the complement.

The Complexity of Planning Revisited - A Parameterized Analysis

The early classifications of the computational complexity of planning under various restrictions in STRIPS (Bylander) and SAS+ (Baeckstroem and Nebel) have influenced following research in planning in many ways. We go back and reanalyse their subclasses, but this time using the more modern tool of parameterized complexity analysis. This provides new results that together with the old results give a more detailed picture of the complexity landscape. We demonstrate separation results not possible with standard complexity theory, which contributes to explaining why certain cases of planning have seemed simpler in practice than theory has predicted. In particular, we show that certain restrictions of practical interest are tractable in the parameterized sense of the term, and that a simple heuristic is sufficient to make a well-known partial-order planner exploit this fact.

Double Negative Dispersion Relations from Coated Plasmonic Rods

A metamaterial with frequency dependent double negative effective properties is constructed from a sub-wavelength periodic array of coated rods. Explicit power series are developed for the dispersion relation and associated Bloch wave solutions. The expansion parameter is the ratio of the length scale of the periodic lattice to the wavelength. Direct numerical simulations for finite size period cells show that the leading order term in the power series for the dispersion relation is a good predictor of the dispersive behavior of the metamaterial.

Tunable Double Negative Band Structure from Non-Magnetic Coated Rods

A system of periodic poly-disperse coated nano-rods is considered. Both the coated nano-rods and host material are non-magnetic. The exterior nano-coating has a frequency dependent dielectric constant and the rod has a high dielectric constant. A negative effective magnetic permeability is generated near the Mie resonances of the rods while the coating generates a negative permittivity through a field resonance controlled by the plasma frequency of the coating and the geometry of the crystal. The explicit band structure for the system is calculated in the sub-wavelength limit. Tunable pass bands exhibiting negative group velocity are generated and correspond to simultaneously negative effective dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. These can be explicitly controlled by adjusting the distance between rods, the coating thickness, and rod diameters.

Optimal lower bounds on the local stress inside random thermoelastic composites

A methodology is presented for bounding all higher moments of the local hydrostatic stress field inside random two phase linear thermoelastic media undergoing macroscopic thermomechanical loading. The method also provides a lower bound on the maximum local stress. Explicit formulas for the optimal lower bounds are found that are expressed in terms of the applied macro- scopic thermal and mechanical loading, coefficients of thermal expansion, elastic properties, and volume fractions. These bounds provide a means to measure load transfer across length scales relating the excursions of the local fields to the applied loads and the thermal stresses inside each phase. These bounds are shown to be the best possible in that they are attained by the Hashin-Shtrikman coated sphere assemblage.

Towards an explanatory and computational theory of scientific discovery

We propose an explanatory and computational theory of transformative discoveries in science. The theory is derived from a recurring theme found in a diverse range of scientific change, scientific discovery, and knowledge diffusion theories in philosophy of science, sociology of science, social network analysis, and information science. The theory extends the concept of structural holes from social networks to a broader range of associative networks found in science studies, especially including networks that reflect underlying intellectual structures such as co-citation networks and collaboration networks. The central premise is that connecting otherwise disparate patches of knowledge is a valuable mechanism of creative thinking in general and transformative scientific discovery in particular.
