Body-mounted MR-conditional Robot for Minimally Invasive Liver Intervention

MR-guided microwave ablation (MWA) has proven effective in treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with small-sized tumors, but the state-of-the-art technique suffers from sub-optimal workflow due to speed and accuracy of needle placement. This paper presents a compact body-mounted MR-conditional robot that can operate in closed-bore MR scanners for accurate needle guidance. The robotic platform consists of two stacked Cartesian XY stages, each with two degrees of freedom, that facilitate needle guidance. The robot is actuated using 3D-printed pneumatic turbines with MR-conditional bevel gear transmission systems. Pneumatic valves and control mechatronics are located inside the MRI control room and are connected to the robot with pneumatic transmission lines and optical fibers. Free space experiments indicated robot-assisted needle insertion error of 2.6$\pm$1.3 mm at an insertion depth of 80 mm. The MR-guided phantom studies were conducted to verify the MR-conditionality and targeting performance of the robot. Future work will focus on the system optimization and validations in animal trials.

New constraints on Triton's atmosphere from the 6 October 2022 stellar occultation

The atmosphere of Triton was probed directly by observing a ground-based stellar occultation on 6 October 2022. This rare event yielded 23 positive light curves collected from 13 separate observation stations contributing to our campaign. The significance of this event lies in its potential to directly validate the modest pressure fluctuation on Triton, a phenomenon not definitively verified by previous observations, including only five stellar occultations, and the Voyager 2 radio occultation in 1989. Using an approach consistent with a comparable study, we precisely determined a surface pressure of $14.07_{-0.13}^{+0.21}~\mathrm{μbar}$ in 2022. This new pressure rules out any significant monotonic variation in pressure between 2017 and 2022 through direct observations, as it is in alignment with the 2017 value. Additionally, both the pressures in 2017 and 2022 align with the 1989 value. This provides further support for the conclusion drawn from the previous volatile transport model simulation, which is consistent with the observed alignment between the pressures in 1989 and 2017; that is to say, the pressure fluctuation is modest. Moreover, this conclusion suggests the existence of a northern polar cap extended down to at least $45^\circ$N$-60^\circ$N and the presence of nitrogen between $30^\circ$S and $0^\circ$.

TPLLM: A Traffic Prediction Framework Based on Pretrained Large Language Models

Traffic prediction constitutes a pivotal facet within the purview of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and the attainment of highly precise predictions holds profound significance for efficacious traffic management. The precision of prevailing deep learning-driven traffic prediction models typically sees an upward trend with a rise in the volume of training data. However, the procurement of comprehensive spatiotemporal datasets for traffic is often fraught with challenges, primarily stemming from the substantial costs associated with data collection and retention. Consequently, developing a model that can achieve accurate predictions and good generalization ability in areas with limited historical traffic data is a challenging problem. It is noteworthy that the rapidly advancing pretrained Large Language Models (LLMs) of recent years have demonstrated exceptional proficiency in cross-modality knowledge transfer and few-shot learning. Recognizing the sequential nature of traffic data, similar to language, we introduce TPLLM, a novel traffic prediction framework leveraging LLMs. In this framework, we construct a sequence embedding layer based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and a graph embedding layer based on Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) to extract sequence features and spatial features, respectively. These are subsequently integrated to form inputs that are suitable for LLMs. A Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning approach is applied to TPLLM, thereby facilitating efficient learning and minimizing computational demands. Experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate that TPLLM exhibits commendable performance in both full-sample and few-shot prediction scenarios, effectively supporting the development of ITS in regions with scarce historical traffic data.

Polarization-based cyclic weak value metrology for angular velocity measurement

Weak measurement has been proven to amplify the detection of changes in meters while discarding most photons due to the low probability of post-selection. Previous power-recycling schemes enable the failed post-selection photons to be repeatedly selected, thus overcoming the inefficient post-selection and increasing the precision of detection. In this study, we focus on the polarization-based weak value angular-velocity measurement and introduce three cyclic methods to enhance the accuracy of detecting time shift in a Gaussian beam: power recycling, signal recycling, and dual recycling schemes. By incorporating one or two partially transmitting mirrors into the system, both the power and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the detected light are substantially enhanced. Compared to non-polarization schemes, polarization-based approaches offer several advantages, including lower optical loss, unique cyclic directions, and a wider optimal region. These features effectively reduce crosstalk among different light paths and theoretically eliminate the walk-off effect, thus yielding improvements in both theoretical performance and application.

Real-Time Bidding Strategy of Energy Storage in an Energy Market with Carbon Emission Allocation Based on Aumann-Shapley Prices

Energy storage (ES) can help decarbonize power systems by transferring green renewable energy across time. How to unlock the potential of ES in cutting carbon emissions by appropriate market incentives has become a crucial, albeit challenging, problem. This paper fills the research gap by proposing a novel electricity market with carbon emission allocation and then investigating the real-time bidding strategy of ES in the proposed market. First, a carbon emission allocation mechanism based on Aumann-Shapley prices is developed and integrated into the electricity market clearing process to give combined electricity and emission prices. A parametric linear programming-based algorithm is proposed to calculate the carbon emission allocation more accurately and efficiently. Second, the real-time bidding strategy of ES in the proposed market is studied. To be specific, we derive the real-time optimal ES operation strategy as a function of the combined electricity and emission price using Lyapunov optimization. Based on this, the real-time bidding cost curve and bounds of ES in the proposed market can be deduced. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed method. Its advantages over the existing methods are also demonstrated by comparisons.

State-independent geometric quantum gates via nonadiabatic and noncyclic evolution

Geometric phases are robust to local noises and the nonadiabatic ones can reduce the evolution time, thus nonadiabatic geometric gates have strong robustness and can approach high fidelity. However, the advantage of geometric phase has not being fully explored in previous investigations. Here, we propose a scheme for universal quantum gates with pure nonadiabatic and noncyclic geometric phases from smooth evolution paths. In our scheme, only geometric phase can be accumulated in a fast way, and thus it not only fully utilizes the local noise resistant property of geometric phase but also reduces the difficulty in experimental realization. Numerical results show that the implemented geometric gates have stronger robustness than dynamical gates and the geometric scheme with cyclic path. Furthermore, we propose to construct universal quantum gate on superconducting circuits, with the fidelities of single-qubit gate and nontrivial two-qubit gate can achieve $99.97\%$ and $99.87\%$, respectively. Therefore, these high-fidelity quantum gates are promising for large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Hierarchical Game for Coupled Power System with Energy Sharing and Transportation System

The wide deployment of distributed renewable energy sources and electric vehicles can help mitigate climate crisis. This necessitates new business models in the power sector to hedge against uncertainties while imposing a strong coupling between the connected power and transportation networks. To address these challenges, this paper first proposes an energy sharing mechanism considering AC power network constraints to encourage local energy exchange in the power system. Under the proposed mechanism, all prosumers play a generalized Nash game. We prove that the energy sharing equilibrium exists and is socially optimal. Furthermore, a hierarchical game is built to characterize the interactions both inside and between the power and transportation systems. Externally, the two systems are engaged in a generalized Nash game because traffic flows serve as electric demands by charging behaviors, and each driver pays the energy sharing price for charging. The hierarchical game is then converted into a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) with the help of optimality conditions and linearization techniques. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical results and show the mutual impact between the two systems.

Field-induced phase transitions and quantum criticality in a honeycomb antiferromagnet Na3Co2SbO6

We performed 23Na NMR measurements on a single-domain crystal of the Kitaev material Na3Co2SbO6, with magnetic field applied along the crystalline a axis. A positive Curie-Weiss constant is obtained from the NMR Knight shift, which suggests the existence of ferromagnetic exchange couplings. The antiferromagnetic ordering is found to be suppressed at a field of 1.9 T. Inside the ordered phase, our data reveal two additional phase transitions. At 1.9 T, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/23T1 establishes a quantum critical behavior at high temperatures. However, at low temperatures, a gapped behavior is observed at the critical field, which suggests a weakly first-order transition instead and a possible field-induced quantum spin liquid. Our results reveal complex microscopic interactions in the system, which may help to search for possible quantum spin liquids.

Distributed Stackelberg Equilibrium Seeking for Networked Multi-Leader Multi-Follower Games with A Clustered Information Structure

The Stackelberg game depicts a leader-follower relationship wherein decisions are made sequentially, and the Stackelberg equilibrium represents an expected optimal solution when the leader can anticipate the rational response of the follower. Motivated by control of network systems with two levels of decision-making hierarchy, such as the management of energy networks and power coordination at cellular networks, a networked multi-leaders and multi-followers Stackelberg game is proposed. Due to the constraint of limited information interaction among players, a clustered information structure is assumed that each leader can only communicate with a portion of overall followers, namely its subordinated followers, and also only with its local neighboring leaders. In this case, the leaders cannot fully anticipate the collective rational response of all followers with its local information. To address Stackelberg equilibrium seeking under this partial information structure, we propose a distributed seeking algorithm based on implicit gradient estimation and network consensus mechanisms. We rigorously prove the convergence of the algorithm for both diminishing and constant step sizes under strict and strong monotonicity conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the model and the algorithm can also incorporate linear equality and inequality constraints into the followers' optimization problems, with the approach of the interior point barrier function. Finally, we present numerical simulations in applications to corroborate our claims on the proposed framework.

Economic Forces in Stock Returns

When analyzing the components influencing the stock prices, it is commonly believed that economic activities play an important role. More specifically, asset prices are more sensitive to the systematic economic news that impose a pervasive effect on the whole market. Moreover, the investors will not be rewarded for bearing idiosyncratic risks as such risks are diversifiable. In the paper Economic Forces and the Stock Market 1986, the authors introduced an attribution model to identify the specific systematic economic forces influencing the market. They first defined and examined five classic factors from previous research papers: Industrial Production, Unanticipated Inflation, Change in Expected Inflation, Risk Premia, and The Term Structure. By adding in new factors, the Market Indices, Consumptions and Oil Prices, one by one, they examined the significant contribution of each factor to the stock return. The paper concluded that the stock returns are exposed to the systematic economic news, and they are priced with respect to their risk exposure. Also, the significant factors can be identified by simply adopting their model. Driven by such motivation, we conduct an attribution analysis based on the general framework of their model to further prove the importance of the economic factors and identify the specific identity of significant factors.

CRISIS ALERT:Forecasting Stock Market Crisis Events Using Machine Learning Methods

Historically, the economic recession often came abruptly and disastrously. For instance, during the 2008 financial crisis, the SP 500 fell 46 percent from October 2007 to March 2009. If we could detect the signals of the crisis earlier, we could have taken preventive measures. Therefore, driven by such motivation, we use advanced machine learning techniques, including Random Forest and Extreme Gradient Boosting, to predict any potential market crashes mainly in the US market. Also, we would like to compare the performance of these methods and examine which model is better for forecasting US stock market crashes. We apply our models on the daily financial market data, which tend to be more responsive with higher reporting frequencies. We consider 75 explanatory variables, including general US stock market indexes, SP 500 sector indexes, as well as market indicators that can be used for the purpose of crisis prediction. Finally, we conclude, with selected classification metrics, that the Extreme Gradient Boosting method performs the best in predicting US stock market crisis events.

Applications of Large Scale Foundation Models for Autonomous Driving

Since DARPA Grand Challenges (rural) in 2004/05 and Urban Challenges in 2007, autonomous driving has been the most active field of AI applications. Recently powered by large language models (LLMs), chat systems, such as chatGPT and PaLM, emerge and rapidly become a promising direction to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI) in natural language processing (NLP). There comes a natural thinking that we could employ these abilities to reformulate autonomous driving. By combining LLM with foundation models, it is possible to utilize the human knowledge, commonsense and reasoning to rebuild autonomous driving systems from the current long-tailed AI dilemma. In this paper, we investigate the techniques of foundation models and LLMs applied for autonomous driving, categorized as simulation, world model, data annotation and planning or E2E solutions etc.

MR-conditional Robotic Actuation of Concentric Tendon-Driven Cardiac Catheters

Atrial fibrillation (AF) and ventricular tachycardia (VT) are two of the sustained arrhythmias that significantly affect the quality of life of patients. Treatment of AF and VT often requires radiofrequency ablation of heart tissues using an ablation catheter. Recent progress in ablation therapy leverages magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for higher contrast visual feedback, and additionally utilizes a guiding sheath with an actively deflectable tip to improve the dexterity of the catheter inside the heart. This paper presents the design and validation of an MR-conditional robotic module for automated actuation of both the ablation catheter and the sheath. The robotic module features a compact design for improved accessibility inside the MR scanner bore and is driven by piezoelectric motors to ensure MR-conditionality. The combined catheter-sheath mechanism is essentially a concentric tendon-driven continuum robot and its kinematics is modeled by the constant curvature model for closed-loop position control. Path following experiments were conducted to validate the actuation module and control scheme, achieving < 2 mm average tip position error.

Reconciling results of 2019 and 2020 stellar occultations on Pluto's atmosphere. New constraints from both the 5 September 2019 event and consistency analysis

A stellar occultation by Pluto on 5 September 2019 yielded positive detections at two separate stations. Using an approach consistent with comparable studies, we derived a surface pressure of $11.478 \pm 0.55~\mathrm{μbar}$ for Pluto's atmosphere from the observations of this event. In addition, to avoid potential method inconsistancies highlighted by Sicardy et al. when comparing with historical pressure measurements, we reanalyzed the data by 15 August 2018 and 17 July 2019 events, respectively. All the new measurements provide a bridge between the two different perspectives on the pressure variation since 2015: a rapid pressure drop from previous studies of the 15 August 2018 and 17 July 2019 events and a plateau phase from that of the 6 June 2020 event. The pressure measurement from the 5 September 2019 event aligns with those from 2016, 2018, and 2020, supporting the latter perspective. While the measurements from the 4 June 2011 and 17 July 2019 events suggest probable V-shaped pressure variations unaccounted for by the volatile transport model (VTM) from Meza et al., the VTM remains applicable on average. And, the validity of the V-shaped variations is debatable due to the stellar faintness of the 4 June 2011 event and the grazing single-chord geometry of the 17 July 2019 event. To reveal and understand all significant pressure variations of Pluto's atmosphere, it is essential to provide constraints on both short-term and long-term evolutions of the interacting atmosphere and surface by continuous pressure monitoring through occultation observations, whenever possible, complemented by frequent spectroscopy and photometry of the surface.

A Multi-timescale and Chance-Constrained Energy Dispatching Strategy of Integrated Heat-Power Community with Shared Hybrid Energy Storage

The community in the future may develop into an integrated heat-power system, which includes a high proportion of renewable energy, power generator units, heat generator units, and shared hybrid energy storage. In the integrated heat-power system with coupling heat-power generators and demands, the key challenges lie in the interaction between heat and power, the inherent uncertainty of renewable energy and consumers' demands, and the multi-timescale scheduling of heat and power. In this paper, we propose a game theoretic model of the integrated heat-power system. For the welfare-maximizing community operator, its energy dispatch strategy is under chance constraints, where the day-ahead scheduling determines the scheduled energy dispatching strategies, and the real-time dispatch considers the adjustment of generators. For utility-maximizing consumers, their demands are sensitive to the preference parameters. Taking into account the uncertainty in both renewable energy and consumer demand, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the Stackelberg game equilibrium and develop a fixed point algorithm to find the market equilibrium between the community operator and community consumers. Numerical simulations on integrated heat-power system validate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-timescale integrated heat and power model.

Real-time Feedback Based Online Aggregate EV Power Flexibility Characterization

As an essential measure to combat global warming, electric vehicles (EVs) have witnessed rapid growth. Flexible EVs can enhance power systems' ability to handle renewable generation uncertainties. How EV flexibility can be utilized in power grid operation has captured great attention. However, the direct control of individual EVs is challenging due to their small capacity and large number. Hence, it is the aggregator that interacts with the grid on behalf of the EVs by characterizing their aggregate flexibility. In this paper, we focus on the aggregate EV power flexibility characterization problem. First, an offline model is built to obtain the lower and upper bounds of the aggregate EV power flexibility region. It ensures that any trajectory within the region is feasible. Then, considering that parameters such as real-time electricity prices and EV arrival/departure times are not known in advance, an online algorithm is developed based on Lyapunov optimization techniques. We provide a theoretical bound for the maximum charging delay under the proposed online algorithm. Furthermore, real-time feedback is designed and integrated into the proposed online algorithm to better unlock EV power flexibility. Comprehensive performance comparisons are carried out to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method.

Pushing thermal conductivity to its lower limit in crystals with simple structures

Materials with low thermal conductivity usually have complex crystal structures. Herein we experimentally find that a simple crystal structure material AgTlI2 (I4/mcm) owns an extremely low thermal conductivity of 0.25 W/mK at room temperature. To understand this anomaly, we perform in-depth theoretical studies based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and anharmonic lattice dynamics. We find that the unique atomic arrangement and weak chemical bonding provide a permissive environment for strong oscillations of Ag atoms, leading to a considerable rattling behavior and giant lattice anharmonicity. This feature is also verified by the experimental probability density function refinement of single-crystal diffraction. The particularly strong anharmonicity breaks down the conventional phonon gas model, giving rise to non-negligible wavelike phonon behaviors in AgTlI2 at 300 K. Intriguingly, unlike many strongly anharmonic materials where a small propagative thermal conductivity is often accompanied by a large diffusive thermal conductivity, we find an unusual coexistence of ultralow propagative and diffusive thermal conductivities in AgTlI2 based on the thermal transport unified theory. This study underscores the potential of simple crystal structures in achieving low thermal conductivity and encourages further experimental research to enrich the family of materials with ultralow thermal conductivity.

Neural Image Compression Using Masked Sparse Visual Representation

We study neural image compression based on the Sparse Visual Representation (SVR), where images are embedded into a discrete latent space spanned by learned visual codebooks. By sharing codebooks with the decoder, the encoder transfers integer codeword indices that are efficient and cross-platform robust, and the decoder retrieves the embedded latent feature using the indices for reconstruction. Previous SVR-based compression lacks effective mechanism for rate-distortion tradeoffs, where one can only pursue either high reconstruction quality or low transmission bitrate. We propose a Masked Adaptive Codebook learning (M-AdaCode) method that applies masks to the latent feature subspace to balance bitrate and reconstruction quality. A set of semantic-class-dependent basis codebooks are learned, which are weighted combined to generate a rich latent feature for high-quality reconstruction. The combining weights are adaptively derived from each input image, providing fidelity information with additional transmission costs. By masking out unimportant weights in the encoder and recovering them in the decoder, we can trade off reconstruction quality for transmission bits, and the masking rate controls the balance between bitrate and distortion. Experiments over the standard JPEG-AI dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our M-AdaCode approach.
