Applying Stochastic Network Calculus to 802.11 Backlog and Delay Analysis

Stochastic network calculus provides an elegant way to characterize traffic and service processes. However, little effort has been made on applying it to multi-access communication systems such as 802.11. In this paper, we take the first step to apply it to the backlog and delay analysis of an 802.11 wireless local network. In particular, we address the following questions: In applying stochastic network calculus, under what situations can we derive stable backlog and delay bounds? How to derive the backlog and delay bounds of an 802.11 wireless node? And how tight are these bounds when compared with simulations? To answer these questions, we first derive the general stability condition of a wireless node (not restricted to 802.11). From this, we give the specific stability condition of an 802.11 wireless node. Then we derive the backlog and delay bounds of an 802.11 node based on an existing model of 802.11. We observe that the derived bounds are loose when compared with ns-2 simulations, indicating that improvements are needed in the current version of stochastic network calculus.

The diffuse GeV-TeV $γ$-ray emission of the Cygnus region

Recently the Milagro experiment observed diffuse multi-TeV gamma-ray emission in the Cygnus region, which is significantly stronger than what predicted by the Galactic cosmic ray model. However, the sub-GeV observation by EGRET shows no excess to the prediction based on the same model. This TeV excess implies possible high energy cosmic rays populated in the region with harder spectrum than that observed on the Earth. In the work we studied this theoretical speculation in detail. We find that, a diffuse proton source with power index $α_p\lesssim 2.3$, or a diffuse electron source with power index $α_e\lesssim2.6$ can reproduce the Milagro's observation without conflicting with the EGRET data. Further detections on neutrinos, a diagnostic of the hadronic model, and hard X-ray synchrontron radiation, a diagnostic of the lepton model, help to break this degeneracy. In combination with the gamma ray observations to several hundred GeV by Fermi, we will be able to understand the diffuse emission mechanisms in the Cygnus region better.

Understanding the Paradoxical Effects of Power Control on the Capacity of Wireless Networks

Recent works show conflicting results: network capacity may increase or decrease with higher transmission power under different scenarios. In this work, we want to understand this paradox. Specifically, we address the following questions: (1)Theoretically, should we increase or decrease transmission power to maximize network capacity? (2) Theoretically, how much network capacity gain can we achieve by power control? (3) Under realistic situations, how do power control, link scheduling and routing interact with each other? Under which scenarios can we expect a large capacity gain by using higher transmission power? To answer these questions, firstly, we prove that the optimal network capacity is a non-decreasing function of transmission power. Secondly, we prove that the optimal network capacity can be increased unlimitedly by higher transmission power in some network configurations. However, when nodes are distributed uniformly, the gain of optimal network capacity by higher transmission power is upper-bounded by a positive constant. Thirdly, we discuss why network capacity in practice may increase or decrease with higher transmission power under different scenarios using carrier sensing and the minimum hop-count routing. Extensive simulations are carried out to verify our analysis.

Doping dependence of the upper critical field in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 from specific heat

The low-temperature specific heat of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) single crystals in magnetic field H up to 12 T has been examined over a wide range of doping (0.063=< p =<0.238). From this we have mapped the upper critical field H_{c2} of LSCO across the entire superconducting diagram. It is found that the H_{c2} shows a doping dependence similar to that of the critical temperature T_c. We have discussed the implications of the result and proposed that there may be an effective superconducting energy scale responsible for the H_{c2} behavior in the underdoped region.

Nodeless Superconductivity in the Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor $Mg_{10}Ir_{19}B_{16}$

We measured the resistivity, diamagnetization and low temperature specific heat of the newly discovered noncentrosymmetric superconductor $Mg_{10}Ir_{19}B_{16}$. It is found that the superconducting gap has an s-wave symmetry with a value of about $Δ_0 \approx$ 0.6 meV, and the ratio $Δ_0/k_BT_c\approx1.86$ indicates a weak coupling for the superconductivity. The correlations among the normal state Sommerfeld constant $γ_n$, the slope $-dμ_0H_{c2}(T)/dT$ near Tc and the condensation energy Ec are all consistent with the weak coupling picture. The separated phonon contribution from the specific heat shows that the conduction electrons of the $Ir$ atoms interact most strongly with the vibrations of themselves, instead of with that of the light element boron.

Reversible magnetization and critical fluctuations in systematically doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals

The temperature and field dependence of reversible magnetization have been measured on a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystal at six different doping concentrations. It is found that the data above 2 T can be described by the scaling law based on the GL-LLL (lowest Landau level approach based on Ginzburg-Landau theory) critical fluctuation theory yielding the values of the slope of upper critical field $-\mathrm{d}H_{\mathrm{c2}}(T)/\mathrm{d}T$ near $T_\mathrm{c}$. This set of values is self-consistent with that obtained in doing the universal scaling for the six samples. Based on a simple Ginzburg-Landau approach, we determined the doping dependence of the coherence length $ξ$ which behaves in a similar way as that determined from $ξ= \hbar v_\mathrm{F}/E_\mathrm{sc}$ with $E_\mathrm{sc}$ the superconducting energy scale. Our results may suggest a growing coherence length towards more underdoping.

Pseudogap, Superconducting Energy Scale, and Fermi Arcs in Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in zero temperature limit, we determined the nodal slope $v_Δ$ of the quasiparticle gap. It is found that $v_Δ$ has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ or value $Δ_p$. Meanwhile the virtual maximum gap at ($π,0$) derived from $v_Δ$ is found to follow the simple relation $Δ_q=0.46k_BT^*$ upon changing the doping concentration. This strongly suggests a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is further found that the superconducting transition temperature is determined by both the residual density of states of the pseudogap phase and the nodal gap slope in the zero temperature limit, namely, $T_c \approx βv_Δγ_n(0)$, where $γ_n(0)$ is the extracted zero temperature value of the normal state specific heat coefficient which is proportional to the size of the residual Fermi arc $k_{arc}$. This manifests that the superconductivity may be formed by forming a new gap on the Fermi arcs near nodes below $T_c$. These observations mimic the key predictions of the SU(2) slave boson theory based on the general resonating-valence-bond (RVB) picture.

Pseudogap, Superconducting Gap, and Fermi Arcs in Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in zero temperature limit, we find that the nodal slope $v_Δ$ of the superconducting gap has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ or value $Δ_p$. Meanwhile the maximum quasiparticle gap derived from $v_Δ$ is quite close to $T^*$. Both indicate a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is also found that $T_c \approx βv_Δγ_n(0)$, where $γ_n(0)$ is the extracted zero temperature value of the normal state specific heat coefficient which is proportional to the size of the residual Fermi arc $k_{arc}$. These observations mimic the key predictions of the SU(2) slave boson theory based on the general resonating-valence-bond (RVB) picture.
