James-Stein Type Center Pixel Weights for Non-Local Means Image Denoising

Non-Local Means (NLM) and variants have been proven to be effective and robust in many image denoising tasks. In this letter, we study the parameter selection problem of center pixel weights (CPW) in NLM. Our key contributions are: 1) we give a novel formulation of the CPW problem from the statistical shrinkage perspective; 2) we introduce the James-Stein type CPWs for NLM; and 3) we propose a new adaptive CPW that is locally tuned for each image pixel. Our experimental results showed that compared to existing CPW solutions, the new proposed CPWs are more robust and effective under various noise levels. In particular, the NLM with the James-Stein type CPWs attain higher means with smaller variances in terms of the peak signal and noise ratio, implying they improve the NLM robustness and make it less sensitive to parameter selection.

Topological insulator Bi2Te3 films synthesized by metal organic chemical vapor deposition

Topological insulator (TI) materials such as Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 have attracted strong recent interests. Large scale, high quality TI thin films are important for developing TI-based device applications. In this work, structural and electronic properties of Bi2Te3 thin films deposited by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on GaAs (001) substrates were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and electronic transport measurements. The characteristic topological surface states (SS) with a single Dirac cone have been clearly revealed in the electronic band structure measured by ARPES, confirming the TI nature of the MOCVD Bi2Te3 films. Resistivity and Hall effect measurements have demonstrated relatively high bulk carrier mobility of ~350 cm^2/Vs at 300K and ~7,400 cm^2/Vs at 15 K. We have also measured the Seebeck coefficient of the films. Our demonstration of high quality topological insulator films grown by a simple and scalable method is of interests for both fundamental research and practical applications of thermoelectric and TI materials.

Coherent electrical rotations of valley states in Si quantum dots using the phase of the valley-orbit coupling

A gate electric field has a small but non-negligible effect on the phase of the valley-orbit coupling in Si quantum dots. Finite interdot tunneling between valley eigenstates in a double quantum dot is enabled by a small difference in the phase of the valley-orbit coupling between the two dots, and it in turn allows controllable rotations of two-dot valley eigenstates at a level anticrossing. We present a comprehensive analytical discussion of this process, with estimates for realistic structures.

Sudoku Associated Two Dimensional Bijections for Image Scrambling

Sudoku puzzles are now popular among people in many countries across the world with simple constraints that no repeated digits in each row, each column, or each block. In this paper, we demonstrate that the Sudoku configuration provides us a new alternative way of matrix element representation by using block-grid pair besides the conventional row-column pair. Moreover, we discover six more matrix element representations by using row-digit pair, digit-row pair, column-digit pair, digit-column pair, block-digit pair, and digit-block pair associated with a Sudoku matrix. These parametric Sudoku associated matrix element representations not only allow us to denote matrix elements in secret ways, but also provide us new parametric two-dimensional bijective mappings. We study these two-dimensional bijections in the problem of image scrambling and propose a simple but effective Sudoku Associated Image Scrambler only using Sudoku associated two dimensional bijections for image scrambling without bandwidth expansion. Our simulation results over a wide collection of image types and contents demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. Scrambler performance analysis with comparisons to peer algorithms under various investigation methods, including human visual inspections, gray degree of scrambling, autocorrelation coefficient of adjacent pixels, and key space and key sensitivities, suggest that the proposed method outperforms or at least reaches state-of-the-art. Similar scrambling ideas are also applicable to other digital data forms such as audio and video.

A resonant feature near the Perseus arm revealed by red clump stars

We investigate the extinction together with the radial velocity dispersion and distribution of red clump stars in the anti-center direction using spectra obtained with Hectospec on the MMT. We find that extinction peaks at Galactocentric radii of about 9.5 and 12.5 kpc, right in front of the locations of the Perseus and Outer arms and in line with the relative position of dust and stars in external spiral galaxies. The radial velocity dispersion peaks around 10kpc, which coincides with the location of the Perseus arm, yields an estimated arm-interarm density contrast of 1.3-1.5 and is in agreement with previous studies. Finally, we discover that the radial velocity distribution bifurcates around 10-11 kpc into two peaks at +27 km/s and -4 km/s. This seems to be naturally explained by the presence of the outer Lindblad resonance of the Galactic bar, but further observations will be needed to understand if the corotation resonance of the spirals arms also plays a role.

A New Family of Generalized 3D Cat Maps

Since the 1990s chaotic cat maps are widely used in data encryption, for their very complicated dynamics within a simple model and desired characteristics related to requirements of cryptography. The number of cat map parameters and the map period length after discretization are two major concerns in many applications for security reasons. In this paper, we propose a new family of 36 distinctive 3D cat maps with different spatial configurations taking existing 3D cat maps [1]-[4] as special cases. Our analysis and comparisons show that this new 3D cat maps family has more independent map parameters and much longer averaged period lengths than existing 3D cat maps. The presented cat map family can be extended to higher dimensional cases.

A Novel Latin Square Image Cipher

In this paper, we introduce a symmetric-key Latin square image cipher (LSIC) for grayscale and color images. Our contributions to the image encryption community include 1) we develop new Latin square image encryption primitives including Latin Square Whitening, Latin Square S-box and Latin Square P-box ; 2) we provide a new way of integrating probabilistic encryption in image encryption by embedding random noise in the least significant image bit-plane; and 3) we construct LSIC with these Latin square image encryption primitives all on one keyed Latin square in a new loom-like substitution-permutation network. Consequently, the proposed LSIC achieve many desired properties of a secure cipher including a large key space, high key sensitivities, uniformly distributed ciphertext, excellent confusion and diffusion properties, semantically secure, and robustness against channel noise. Theoretical analysis show that the LSIC has good resistance to many attack models including brute-force attacks, ciphertext-only attacks, known-plaintext attacks and chosen-plaintext attacks. Experimental analysis under extensive simulation results using the complete USC-SIPI Miscellaneous image dataset demonstrate that LSIC outperforms or reach state of the art suggested by many peer algorithms. All these analysis and results demonstrate that the LSIC is very suitable for digital image encryption. Finally, we open source the LSIC MATLAB code under webpage https://sites.google.com/site/tuftsyuewu/source-code.

Superconductivity at 33 K in potassium-doped 1,2:8,9-dibenzopentacene

We report the observation of superconductivity at 33 K in K-doped 1,2:8,9-dibenzopentacene (C30H18). This is higher than any Tc reported previously for an organic superconductor besides the alkali-metal doped C60. This finding provides an indication that superconductivity at much higher temperature may be possible in such system, if PAHs with longer benzene rings can be synthesized.

Correlation between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in Rb0.8Fe2Se2-xTex single crystals

We report the first experimental evidence for the intimate connection between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in Rb0.8Fe2Se2-xTex single crystal under negative chemical pressure by substituting Se with isovalent Te atoms. Electrical resistance measurements in the temperature range from 4 K to 550 K demonstrate that both superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and Neel temperature (TN) were suppressed continuously with the lattice expansion. When the Te concentration x in Rb0.8Fe2Se2-xTex approaches 0.3, the superconducting transition temperature Tc is completely suppressed and the sample behaves like a semiconductor, meanwhile the characteristic peak of antiferromagnetic transition on resistance curve disappears. Our observation suggests that the pressure-induced lattice expansion can be used to tune the correlativity of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism.

Automatic Determination of Stellar Atmospheric Parameters and Construction of Stellar Spectral Templates of the Guoshoujing Telescope (LAMOST)

A number of spectroscopic surveys have been carried out or are planned to study the origin of the Milky Way. Their exploitation requires reliable automated methods and softwares to measure the fundamental parameters of the stars. Adopting the ULySS package, we have tested the effect of different resolutions and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) on the measurement of the stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperature Teff, surface gravity log g, and metallicity [Fe/H]). We show that ULySS is reliable to determine these parameters with medium-resolution spectra (R~2000). Then, we applied the method to measure the parameters of 771 stars selected in the commissioning database of the Guoshoujing Telescope (GSJT). The results were compared with the SDSS/SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP), and we derived precisions of 167 K, 0.34 dex, and 0.16 dex for Teff, log g and [Fe/H] respectively. Furthermore, 120 of these stars are selected to construct the primary stellar spectra template library (Version 1.0) of GSJT, and will be deployed as basic ingredients for the GSJT automated parametrization pipeline.

Growth, Characterization and Fermi Surface of Heavy Fermion CeCoIn5 Superconductor

High quality single crystals of heavy Fermion CeCoIn5 superconductor have been grown by flux method with a typical size of (1~2)mm x (1~2)mm x ~0.1 mm. The single crystals are characterized by structural analysis from X-ray diffraction and Laue diffraction, as well as compositional analysis. Magnetic and electrical measurements on the single crystals show a sharp superconducting transition with a transition temperature at Tc(onset) ~ 2.3 K and a transition width of ~0.15 K. The resistivity of the CeCoIn5 crystal exhibits a hump at ~45 K which is typical of a heavy Fermion system. High resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of CeCoIn5 reveal clear Fermi surface sheets that are consistent with the band structure calculations when assuming itinerant Ce 4f electrons at low temperature. This work provides important information on the electronic structure of heavy Fermion CeCoIn5 superconductor. It also lays a foundation for further studies on the physical properties and superconducting mechanism of the heavy Fermion superconductors.

Shannon Entropy based Randomness Measurement and Test for Image Encryption

The quality of image encryption is commonly measured by the Shannon entropy over the ciphertext image. However, this measurement does not consider to the randomness of local image blocks and is inappropriate for scrambling based image encryption methods. In this paper, a new information entropy-based randomness measurement for image encryption is introduced which, for the first time, answers the question of whether a given ciphertext image is sufficiently random-like. It measures the randomness over the ciphertext in a fairer way by calculating the averaged entropy of a series of small image blocks within the entire test image. In order to fulfill both quantitative and qualitative measurement, the expectation and the variance of this averaged block entropy for a true-random image are strictly derived and corresponding numerical reference tables are also provided. Moreover, a hypothesis test at significance-level is given to help accept or reject the hypothesis that the test image is ideally encrypted/random-like. Simulation results show that the proposed test is able to give both effectively quantitative and qualitative results for image encryption. The same idea can also be applied to measure other digital data, like audio and video.

Coude-feed stellar spectral library - atmospheric parameters

Context: Empirical libraries of stellar spectra play an important role in different fields. For example, they are used as reference for the automatic determination of atmospheric parameters, or for building synthetic stellar populations to study galaxies. The CFLIB (Coude-feed library, Indo-US) database is at present one of the most complete libraries, in terms of its coverage of the atmospheric parameters space (Teff, log g and [Fe/H]) and wavelength coverage 3460 - 9464 A at a resolution of 1 A FWHM. Although the atmospheric parameters of most of the stars were determined from detailed analyses of high-resolution spectra, for nearly 300 of the 1273 stars of the library at least one of the three parameters is missing. For the others, the measurements, compiled from the literature, are inhomogeneous. Aims: In this paper, we re-determine the atmospheric parameters, directly using the CFLIB spectra, and compare them to the previous studies. Methods: We use the ULySS program to derive the atmospheric parameters, using the ELODIE library as a reference. Results: Based on comparisons with several previous studies we conclude that our determinations are unbiased. For the 958 F,G, and K type stars the precision on Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] is respectively 43 K, 0.13 dex and 0.05 dex. For the 53 M stars they are 82 K, 0.22 dex and 0.28 dex. And, for the 260 OBA type stars the relative precision on Teff is 5.1%, and on log g, and [Fe/H] the precision is respectively 0.19 dex and 0.16 dex. These parameters will be used to re-calibrate the CFLIB fluxes and to produce synthetic spectra of stellar populations.

ULySS: A Full Spectrum Fitting Package

Aims. We provide an easy-to-use full-spectrum fitting package and explore its applications to (i) the determination of the stellar atmospheric parameters and (ii) the study of the history of stellar populations. Methods. We developed ULySS, a package to fit spectroscopic observations against a linear combination of non-linear model components convolved with a parametric line-of-sight velocity distribution. The minimization can be either local or global, and determines all the parameters in a single fit. We use chi2 maps, convergence maps and Monte-Carlo simulations to study the degeneracies, local minima and to estimate the errors. Results. We show the importance of determining the shape of the continuum simultaneously to the other parameters by including a multiplicative polynomial in the model (without prior pseudo-continuum determination, or rectification of the spectrum). We also stress the benefice of using an accurate line-spread function, depending on the wavelength, so that the line-shape of the models properly match the observation. For simple models, i. e., to measure the atmospheric parameters or the age/metallicity of a single-age stellar population, there is often a unique minimum, or when local minima exist they can unambiguously be recognized. For more complex models, Monte-Carlo simulations are required to assess the validity of the solution. Conclusions. The ULySS package is public, simple to use and flexible. The full spectrum fitting makes optimal usage of the signal.

Scale-Free Thin Discs with an Isopedic Magnetic Field

Global stationary configurations of both aligned and logarithmic spiral MHD perturbations are constructed analytically within an axisymmetric background ofrazor-thin scale-free gas disc, which is embedded in an axisymmetric gravitational potential of a dark matter halo and involves an isopedic magnetic field almost vertically threaded through the disc plane. The scale-free index $β$ of the disc rotation speed $v_θ\propto R^{-β}$ falls in the rangeof $(-1/2 , 1/2)$ where $R$ is the cylindrical radius. With the holding-back of a deep background dark matter halo potential, the isopedic magnetic field may be strong enough to allow for the magnetic tension force overtaking the disc self-gravity, which can significantly influence global stationary MHD perturbation configurations and stability properties of the scale-free disc system. Only for stationary logarithmic spiral MHD perturbations with a perturbation scale-free index $β_1=1/4$ or for aligned stationary MHD perturbations, can the MHD disc maintain a constant radial flux of angularmomentum. The variable radial flux of angular momentum in the radial direction corresponds to a complex dispersion relation. The marginal instabilities foraxisymmetric MHD disturbances are also examined for a special case as an example. When the magnetic tension force overtakes the disc self-gravity, the scale-free disc can be completely stable against axisymmetric MHD disturbances of all wavelengths. We predict the possible existence of an isopedicallymagnetized gas disc system in rotation primarily confined by a massive dark matter halo potential.

One-Dimensional Hole Gas in Germanium/Silicon Nanowire Heterostructures

Two-dimensional electron and hole gas systems, enabled through band structure design and epitaxial growth on planar substrates, have served as key platforms for fundamental condensed matter research and high performance devices. The analogous development of one-dimensional (1D) electron or hole gas systems through controlled growth on 1D nanostructure substrates, which could open up opportunities beyond existing carbon nanotube and nanowire systems, has not been realized. Here we report the synthesis and transport studies of a 1D hole gas system based on a free-standing germanium/silicon (Ge/Si) core/shell nanowire heterostructure. Room temperature electrical transport measurements show clearly hole accumulation in undoped Ge/Si nanowire heterostructures, in contrast to control experiments on single component nanowires. Low-temperature studies show well controlled Coulomb blockade oscillations when the Si shell serves as a tunnel barrier to the hole gas in the Ge channel. Transparent contacts to the hole gas also have been reproducibly achieved by thermal annealing. In such devices, we observe conductance quantization at low temperatures, corresponding to ballistic transport through 1D subbands, where the measured subband energy spacings agree with calculations for a cylindrical confinement potential. In addition, we observe a 0.7 structure, which has been attributed to spontaneous spin polarization, suggesting the universality of this phenomenon in interacting 1D systems. Lastly, the conductance exhibits little temperature dependence, consistent with our calculation of reduced backscattering in this 1D system, and suggests that transport is ballistic even at room temperature.
