$\textit{LinkPrompt}$: Natural and Universal Adversarial Attacks on Prompt-based Language Models

Prompt-based learning is a new language model training paradigm that adapts the Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) to downstream tasks, which revitalizes the performance benchmarks across various natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Instead of using a fixed prompt template to fine-tune the model, some research demonstrates the effectiveness of searching for the prompt via optimization. Such prompt optimization process of prompt-based learning on PLMs also gives insight into generating adversarial prompts to mislead the model, raising concerns about the adversarial vulnerability of this paradigm. Recent studies have shown that universal adversarial triggers (UATs) can be generated to alter not only the predictions of the target PLMs but also the prediction of corresponding Prompt-based Fine-tuning Models (PFMs) under the prompt-based learning paradigm. However, UATs found in previous works are often unreadable tokens or characters and can be easily distinguished from natural texts with adaptive defenses. In this work, we consider the naturalness of the UATs and develop $\textit{LinkPrompt}$, an adversarial attack algorithm to generate UATs by a gradient-based beam search algorithm that not only effectively attacks the target PLMs and PFMs but also maintains the naturalness among the trigger tokens. Extensive results demonstrate the effectiveness of $\textit{LinkPrompt}$, as well as the transferability of UATs generated by $\textit{LinkPrompt}$ to open-sourced Large Language Model (LLM) Llama2 and API-accessed LLM GPT-3.5-turbo. HAKE: A Knowledge Engine Foundation for Human Activity Understanding

Human activity understanding is of widespread interest in artificial intelligence and spans diverse applications like health care and behavior analysis. Although there have been advances in deep learning, it remains challenging. The object recognition-like solutions usually try to map pixels to semantics directly, but activity patterns are much different from object patterns, thus hindering success. In this work, we propose a novel paradigm to reformulate this task in two stages: first mapping pixels to an intermediate space spanned by atomic activity primitives, then programming detected primitives with interpretable logic rules to infer semantics. To afford a representative primitive space, we build a knowledge base including 26+ M primitive labels and logic rules from human priors or automatic discovering. Our framework, the Human Activity Knowledge Engine (HAKE), exhibits superior generalization ability and performance upon canonical methods on challenging benchmarks. Code and data are available at http://hake-mvig.cn/.

EgoPCA: A New Framework for Egocentric Hand-Object Interaction Understanding

With the surge in attention to Egocentric Hand-Object Interaction (Ego-HOI), large-scale datasets such as Ego4D and EPIC-KITCHENS have been proposed. However, most current research is built on resources derived from third-person video action recognition. This inherent domain gap between first- and third-person action videos, which have not been adequately addressed before, makes current Ego-HOI suboptimal. This paper rethinks and proposes a new framework as an infrastructure to advance Ego-HOI recognition by Probing, Curation and Adaption (EgoPCA). We contribute comprehensive pre-train sets, balanced test sets and a new baseline, which are complete with a training-finetuning strategy. With our new framework, we not only achieve state-of-the-art performance on Ego-HOI benchmarks but also build several new and effective mechanisms and settings to advance further research. We believe our data and the findings will pave a new way for Ego-HOI understanding. Code and data are available at https://mvig-rhos.com/ego_pca

Beyond Object Recognition: A New Benchmark towards Object Concept Learning

Understanding objects is a central building block of artificial intelligence, especially for embodied AI. Even though object recognition excels with deep learning, current machines still struggle to learn higher-level knowledge, e.g., what attributes an object has, and what can we do with an object. In this work, we propose a challenging Object Concept Learning (OCL) task to push the envelope of object understanding. It requires machines to reason out object affordances and simultaneously give the reason: what attributes make an object possesses these affordances. To support OCL, we build a densely annotated knowledge base including extensive labels for three levels of object concept (category, attribute, affordance), and the causal relations of three levels. By analyzing the causal structure of OCL, we present a baseline, Object Concept Reasoning Network (OCRN). It leverages causal intervention and concept instantiation to infer the three levels following their causal relations. In experiments, OCRN effectively infers the object knowledge while following the causalities well. Our data and code are available at https://mvig-rhos.com/ocl.

Towards Generic and Controllable Attacks Against Object Detection

Existing adversarial attacks against Object Detectors (ODs) suffer from two inherent limitations. Firstly, ODs have complicated meta-structure designs, hence most advanced attacks for ODs concentrate on attacking specific detector-intrinsic structures, which makes it hard for them to work on other detectors and motivates us to design a generic attack against ODs. Secondly, most works against ODs make Adversarial Examples (AEs) by generalizing image-level attacks from classification to detection, which brings redundant computations and perturbations in semantically meaningless areas (e.g., backgrounds) and leads to an emergency for seeking controllable attacks for ODs. To this end, we propose a generic white-box attack, LGP (local perturbations with adaptively global attacks), to blind mainstream object detectors with controllable perturbations. For a detector-agnostic attack, LGP tracks high-quality proposals and optimizes three heterogeneous losses simultaneously. In this way, we can fool the crucial components of ODs with a part of their outputs without the limitations of specific structures. Regarding controllability, we establish an object-wise constraint that exploits foreground-background separation adaptively to induce the attachment of perturbations to foregrounds. Experimentally, the proposed LGP successfully attacked sixteen state-of-the-art object detectors on MS-COCO and DOTA datasets, with promising imperceptibility and transferability obtained. Prospects of $CP$ violation in $Λ$ decay with polarized electron beam at STCF

Based on $1.89 \times 10^8$ $J/ψ\rightarrow Λ\barΛ$ Monte Carlo (MC) events produced from a longitudinally-polarized electron beam, the sensitivity of $CP$ violation of $Λ$ decay is studied with fast simulation software. In addition, the $J/ψ\rightarrow Λ\barΛ$ decay can also be used as a process to optimize the detector response using the interface provided by the fast simulation software. In the future, STCF is expected to obtain 3.4 trillion $J/ψ$ events, and the statistical sensitivity of $CP$ violation of $Λ$ decay via $J/ψ\rightarrow Λ\barΛ$ process is expected to reach $\mathcal O$~$(10^{-5})$ when the electron beam polarization is 80\%.

Multi-channel Integrated Recommendation with Exposure Constraints

Integrated recommendation, which aims at jointly recommending heterogeneous items from different channels in a main feed, has been widely applied to various online platforms. Though attractive, integrated recommendation requires the ranking methods to migrate from conventional user-item models to the new user-channel-item paradigm in order to better capture users' preferences on both item and channel levels. Moreover, practical feed recommendation systems usually impose exposure constraints on different channels to ensure user experience. This leads to greater difficulty in the joint ranking of heterogeneous items. In this paper, we investigate the integrated recommendation task with exposure constraints in practical recommender systems. Our contribution is forth-fold. First, we formulate this task as a binary online linear programming problem and propose a two-layer framework named Multi-channel Integrated Recommendation with Exposure Constraints (MIREC) to obtain the optimal solution. Second, we propose an efficient online allocation algorithm to determine the optimal exposure assignment of different channels from a global view of all user requests over the entire time horizon. We prove that this algorithm reaches the optimal point under a regret bound of $ \mathcal{O}(\sqrt{T}) $ with linear complexity. Third, we propose a series of collaborative models to determine the optimal layout of heterogeneous items at each user request. The joint modeling of user interests, cross-channel correlation, and page context in our models aligns more with the browsing nature of feed products than existing models. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on both offline datasets and online A/B tests to verify the effectiveness of MIREC. The proposed framework has now been implemented on the homepage of Taobao to serve the main traffic.

Multi-factor Sequential Re-ranking with Perception-Aware Diversification

Feed recommendation systems, which recommend a sequence of items for users to browse and interact with, have gained significant popularity in practical applications. In feed products, users tend to browse a large number of items in succession, so the previously viewed items have a significant impact on users' behavior towards the following items. Therefore, traditional methods that mainly focus on improving the accuracy of recommended items are suboptimal for feed recommendations because they may recommend highly similar items. For feed recommendation, it is crucial to consider both the accuracy and diversity of the recommended item sequences in order to satisfy users' evolving interest when consecutively viewing items. To this end, this work proposes a general re-ranking framework named Multi-factor Sequential Re-ranking with Perception-Aware Diversification (MPAD) to jointly optimize accuracy and diversity for feed recommendation in a sequential manner. Specifically, MPAD first extracts users' different scales of interests from their behavior sequences through graph clustering-based aggregations. Then, MPAD proposes two sub-models to respectively evaluate the accuracy and diversity of a given item by capturing users' evolving interest due to the ever-changing context and users' personal perception of diversity from an item sequence perspective. This is consistent with the browsing nature of the feed scenario. Finally, MPAD generates the return list by sequentially selecting optimal items from the candidate set to maximize the joint benefits of accuracy and diversity of the entire list. MPAD has been implemented in Taobao's homepage feed to serve the main traffic and provide services to recommend billions of items to hundreds of millions of users every day.

Light nuclei production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3$ GeV from coalescence model

The nucleon coalescence model is one of the most popular theoretical models for light nuclei production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The production of light nuclei $d$, $t$, $^{3}$He, and $^{4}$He is studied using the transport model JAM with a simplified afterburner coalescence at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3$ GeV Au+Au collisions. We scan the cut-off of phenomenological coalescence parameters, the relative spatial distance $ΔR$ and momentum difference $ΔP$, for formation of light nuclei by nucleon coalescence to reproduce the light nuclei $p_{\rm T}$ spectra measured by STAR experiment. The results indicate a potential connection between the coalescence parameters and the binding energy as well as the diameter of these light nuclei.

Feature Extraction Matters More: Universal Deepfake Disruption through Attacking Ensemble Feature Extractors

Adversarial example is a rising way of protecting facial privacy security from deepfake modification. To prevent massive facial images from being illegally modified by various deepfake models, it is essential to design a universal deepfake disruptor. However, existing works treat deepfake disruption as an End-to-End process, ignoring the functional difference between feature extraction and image reconstruction, which makes it difficult to generate a cross-model universal disruptor. In this work, we propose a novel Feature-Output ensemble UNiversal Disruptor (FOUND) against deepfake networks, which explores a new opinion that considers attacking feature extractors as the more critical and general task in deepfake disruption. We conduct an effective two-stage disruption process. We first disrupt multi-model feature extractors through multi-feature aggregation and individual-feature maintenance, and then develop a gradient-ensemble algorithm to enhance the disruption effect by simplifying the complex optimization problem of disrupting multiple End-to-End models. Extensive experiments demonstrate that FOUND can significantly boost the disruption effect against ensemble deepfake benchmark models. Besides, our method can fast obtain a cross-attribute, cross-image, and cross-model universal deepfake disruptor with only a few training images, surpassing state-of-the-art universal disruptors in both success rate and efficiency.

Miniature Magnetic Nano islands in a Morphotropic Cobaltite Matrix

High-density magnetic memories are key components in spintronics, quantum computing, and energy-efficient electronics. Reduced dimensionality and magnetic domain stability at the nanoscale are essential for the miniaturization of magnetic storage units. Yet, inducing magnetic order, and selectively tuning spin-orbital coupling at specific locations have remained challenging. Here we demonstrate the construction of switchable magnetic nano-islands in a nonmagnetic matrix based on cobaltite homo-structures. The magnetic and electronic states are laterally modified by epitaxial strain, which is regionally controlled by freestanding membranes. Atomically sharp grain boundaries isolate the crosstalk between magnetically distinct regions. The minimal size of magnetic nano-islands reaches 35 nm in diameter, enabling an areal density of 400 Gbit per inch square. Besides providing an ideal platform for precisely controlled read and write schemes, this methodology can enable scalable and patterned memories on silicon and flexible substrates for various applications.

Sensitivity of $CP$ Violation of $Λ$ decay in $J/ψ\to Λ\barΛ$ at STCF

The process of $J/ψ\to Λ\barΛ$ is studied using $1.0\times10^{12}$ $J/ψ$ Monte Carlo (MC) events at $\sqrt{s}$=3.097 GeV with a fast simulation software at future Super Tau Charm Facility (STCF). The statistical sensitivity for $CP$ violation is determined to be the order of $\mathcal{O} (10^{-4})$ by measuring the asymmetric parameters of the $Λ$ decay. Furthermore, the decay of $J/ψ\to Λ\barΛ$ also serves as a benchmark process to optimize the detector responses using the interface provided by the fast simulation software.

Constructing Balance from Imbalance for Long-tailed Image Recognition

Long-tailed image recognition presents massive challenges to deep learning systems since the imbalance between majority (head) classes and minority (tail) classes severely skews the data-driven deep neural networks. Previous methods tackle with data imbalance from the viewpoints of data distribution, feature space, and model design, etc. In this work, instead of directly learning a recognition model, we suggest confronting the bottleneck of head-to-tail bias before classifier learning, from the previously omitted perspective of balancing label space. To alleviate the head-to-tail bias, we propose a concise paradigm by progressively adjusting label space and dividing the head classes and tail classes, dynamically constructing balance from imbalance to facilitate the classification. With flexible data filtering and label space mapping, we can easily embed our approach to most classification models, especially the decoupled training methods. Besides, we find the separability of head-tail classes varies among different features with different inductive biases. Hence, our proposed model also provides a feature evaluation method and paves the way for long-tailed feature learning. Extensive experiments show that our method can boost the performance of state-of-the-arts of different types on widely-used benchmarks. Code is available at https://github.com/silicx/DLSA.

Efficient Long Sequential User Data Modeling for Click-Through Rate Prediction

Recent studies on Click-Through Rate (CTR) prediction has reached new levels by modeling longer user behavior sequences. Among others, the two-stage methods stand out as the state-of-the-art (SOTA) solution for industrial applications. The two-stage methods first train a retrieval model to truncate the long behavior sequence beforehand and then use the truncated sequences to train a CTR model. However, the retrieval model and the CTR model are trained separately. So the retrieved subsequences in the CTR model is inaccurate, which degrades the final performance. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end paradigm to model long behavior sequences, which is able to achieve superior performance along with remarkable cost-efficiency compared to existing models. Our contribution is three-fold: First, we propose a hashing-based efficient target attention (TA) network named ETA-Net to enable end-to-end user behavior retrieval based on low-cost bit-wise operations. The proposed ETA-Net can reduce the complexity of standard TA by orders of magnitude for sequential data modeling. Second, we propose a general system architecture as one viable solution to deploy ETA-Net on industrial systems. Particularly, ETA-Net has been deployed on the recommender system of Taobao, and brought 1.8% lift on CTR and 3.1% lift on Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) compared to the SOTA two-stage methods. Third, we conduct extensive experiments on both offline datasets and online A/B test. The results verify that the proposed model outperforms existing CTR models considerably, in terms of both CTR prediction performance and online cost-efficiency. ETA-Net now serves the main traffic of Taobao, delivering services to hundreds of millions of users towards billions of items every day.

GPatch: Patching Graph Neural Networks for Cold-Start Recommendations

Cold start is an essential and persistent problem in recommender systems. State-of-the-art solutions rely on training hybrid models for both cold-start and existing users/items, based on the auxiliary information. Such a hybrid model would compromise the performance of existing users/items, which might make these solutions not applicable in real-worlds recommender systems where the experience of existing users/items must be guaranteed. Meanwhile, graph neural networks (GNNs) have been demonstrated to perform effectively warm (non-cold-start) recommendations. However, they have never been applied to handle the cold-start problem in a user-item bipartite graph. This is a challenging but rewarding task since cold-start users/items do not have links. Besides, it is nontrivial to design an appropriate GNN to conduct cold-start recommendations while maintaining the performance for existing users/items. To bridge the gap, we propose a tailored GNN-based framework (GPatch) that contains two separate but correlated components. First, an efficient GNN architecture -- GWarmer, is designed to model the warm users/items. Second, we construct correlated Patching Networks to simulate and patch GWarmer by conducting cold-start recommendations. Experiments on benchmark and large-scale commercial datasets demonstrate that GPatch is significantly superior in providing recommendations for both existing and cold-start users/items.

Flattened Graph Convolutional Networks For Recommendation

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) and their variants have achieved significant performances on various recommendation tasks. However, many existing GCN models tend to perform recursive aggregations among all related nodes, which can arise severe computational burden to hinder their application to large-scale recommendation tasks. To this end, this paper proposes the flattened GCN~(FlatGCN) model, which is able to achieve superior performance with remarkably less complexity compared with existing models. Our main contribution is three-fold. First, we propose a simplified but powerful GCN architecture which aggregates the neighborhood information using one flattened GCN layer, instead of recursively. The aggregation step in FlatGCN is parameter-free such that it can be pre-computed with parallel computation to save memory and computational cost. Second, we propose an informative neighbor-infomax sampling method to select the most valuable neighbors by measuring the correlation among neighboring nodes based on a principled metric. Third, we propose a layer ensemble technique which improves the expressiveness of the learned representations by assembling the layer-wise neighborhood representations at the final layer. Extensive experiments on three datasets verify that our proposed model outperforms existing GCN models considerably and yields up to a few orders of magnitude speedup in training efficiency.

Model Order Estimation in the Presence of multipath Interference using Residual Convolutional Neural Networks

Model order estimation (MOE) is often a pre-requisite for Direction of Arrival (DoA) estimation. Due to limits imposed by array geometry, it is typically not possible to estimate spatial parameters for an arbitrary number of sources; an estimate of the signal model is usually required. MOE is the process of selecting the most likely signal model from several candidates. While classic methods fail at MOE in the presence of coherent multipath interference, data-driven supervised learning models can solve this problem. Instead of the classic MLP (Multiple Layer Perceptions) or CNN (Convolutional Neural Networks) architectures, we propose the application of Residual Convolutional Neural Networks (RCNN), with grouped symmetric kernel filters to deliver state-of-art estimation accuracy of up to 95.2\% in the presence of coherent multipath, and a weighted loss function to eliminate underestimation error of the model order. We show the benefit of the approach by demonstrating its impact on an overall signal processing flow that determines the number of total signals received by the array, the number of independent sources, and the association of each of the paths with those sources . Moreover, we show that the proposed estimator provides accurate performance over a variety of array types, can identify the overloaded scenario, and ultimately provides strong DoA estimation and signal association performance.
