The Naked-eye Optical Transient OT 120926

A previously unknown optical transient (OT 120926) has been observed in the constellation Bootes. The transient flared to magnitude 4.7, which is comparable to the visual magnitudes of the nearby stars $π$ Boo and $ο$ Boo. Database searches do not yield an unambiguous identification of a quiescent counterpart of this transient but do identify several candidates. However, none of the candidate stellar counterparts have shown any credible evidence of previous variability in the All-Sky Automated Survey or the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey. A flare on the nearby high proper motion, probable M dwarf star LP 440-48 could have produced OT 120926, but the amplitude of the flare would be an unprecedented 11.3 magnitudes. The current record amplitude for such flares on M dwarfs is 9.5 magnitudes.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Cosmological parameters from three seasons of data

We present constraints on cosmological and astrophysical parameters from high-resolution microwave background maps at 148 GHz and 218 GHz made by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) in three seasons of observations from 2008 to 2010. A model of primary cosmological and secondary foreground parameters is fit to the map power spectra and lensing deflection power spectrum, including contributions from both the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect and the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect, Poisson and correlated anisotropy from unresolved infrared sources, radio sources, and the correlation between the tSZ effect and infrared sources. The power ell^2 C_ell/2pi of the thermal SZ power spectrum at 148 GHz is measured to be 3.4 +\- 1.4 muK^2 at ell=3000, while the corresponding amplitude of the kinematic SZ power spectrum has a 95% confidence level upper limit of 8.6 muK^2. Combining ACT power spectra with the WMAP 7-year temperature and polarization power spectra, we find excellent consistency with the LCDM model. We constrain the number of effective relativistic degrees of freedom in the early universe to be Neff=2.79 +\- 0.56, in agreement with the canonical value of Neff=3.046 for three massless neutrinos. We constrain the sum of the neutrino masses to be Sigma m_nu < 0.39 eV at 95% confidence when combining ACT and WMAP 7-year data with BAO and Hubble constant measurements. We constrain the amount of primordial helium to be Yp = 0.225 +\- 0.034, and measure no variation in the fine structure constant alpha since recombination, with alpha/alpha0 = 1.004 +/- 0.005. We also find no evidence for any running of the scalar spectral index, dns/dlnk = -0.004 +\- 0.012.

A Low-Fluorine Solution with the F/Ba Mole Ratio of 2 for the Fabrication of YBCO Films

In the reported low-fluorine MOD-YBCO studies, the lowest F/Ba mole ratio of the precursor solution was 4.5. However, further lowering the F/Ba ratio is important according to the researches of YBCO thick film. On the other hand, the F/Ba ratio is necessary to be at least 2 for the full conversion of the Ba precursor to BaF_2 to avoid the formation of BaCO_3, which is detrimental to the superconducting performance. In this study, a novel solution with the F/Ba mole ratio of 2 was developed, in which the fluorine content was only about 10.3% of that used in the conventional TFA-MOD method. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transformed-infrared spectra(ATR-FT-IR) revealed that BaCO_3 was remarkably suppressed in the as-pyrolyzed film and eliminated at 700 Celsius degree. Thus YBCO films with a critical current density (J_c) over 5 MA cm^{-2} (77 K, 0 T, 200 nm thickness) could be obtained on LAO single crystal substrates. In-situ FT-IR spectra showed that no obvious fluorinated gaseous by-products were detected in the pyrolysis step, which indicated that all of the F atoms might remain in the film as fluorides. X-ray diffraction (XRD) θ/2θ-scan showed that BaF_2, but neither YF_3 nor CuF_2, was detected in the films quenched at 400 - 800 Celsius degree. The formation priority of BaF_2 over YF_3 and CuF_2 was interpreted by the chemical equilibrium of the potential reactions. Our study could enlarge the synthesis window of the precursor solution for MOD-YBCO fabrication and open a gate to study the fluorine content in the precursor solution continuously and systematically.

Induced Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Supersymmetric Naturalness

In this paper we study a new class of supersymmetric models that can explain a 125 GeV Higgs without fine-tuning. These models contain additional `auxiliary Higgs' fields with large tree-level quartic interaction terms but no Yukawa couplings. These have electroweak-breaking vacuum expectation values, and contribute to the VEVs of the MSSM Higgs fields either through an induced quartic or through an induced tadpole. The quartic interactions for the auxiliary Higgs fields can arise from either D-terms or F-terms. The tadpole mechanism has been previously studied in strongly-coupled models with large D-terms, referred to as `superconformal technicolor.' The perturbative models studied here preserve gauge coupling unification in the simplest possible way, namely that all new fields are in complete SU(5) multiplets. The models are consistent with the observed properties of the 125 GeV Higgs-like boson as well as precision electroweak constraints, and predict a rich phenomenology of new Higgs states at the weak scale. The tuning is less than 10% in almost all of the phenomenologically allowed parameter space. If electroweak symmetry is broken by an induced tadpole, the cubic and quartic Higgs self-couplings are significantly smaller than in the standard model.

A 2.0 Gb/s Throughput Decoder for QC-LDPC Convolutional Codes

This paper propose a decoder architecture for low-density parity-check convolutional code (LDPCCC). Specifically, the LDPCCC is derived from a quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC block code. By making use of the quasi-cyclic structure, the proposed LDPCCC decoder adopts a dynamic message storage in the memory and uses a simple address controller. The decoder efficiently combines the memories in the pipelining processors into a large memory block so as to take advantage of the data-width of the embedded memory in a modern field-programmable gate array (FPGA). A rate-5/6 QC-LDPCCC has been implemented on an Altera Stratix FPGA. It achieves up to 2.0 Gb/s throughput with a clock frequency of 100 MHz. Moreover, the decoder displays an excellent error performance of lower than $10^{-13}$ at a bit-energy-to-noise-power-spectral-density ratio ($E_b/N_0$) of 3.55 dB.

A Complete Model of Low-Scale Gauge Mediation

Recent signs of a Standard Model-like Higgs at 125 GeV point towards large A-terms in the MSSM. This presents special challenges for gauge mediation, which by itself predicts vanishing A-terms at the messenger scale. In this paper, we review the general problems that arise when extending gauge mediation to achieve large A-terms, and the mechanisms that exist to overcome them. Using these mechanisms, we construct weakly-coupled models of low-scale gauge mediation with extended Higgs-messenger couplings that generate large A-terms at the messenger scale and viable mu/B_mu-terms. Our models are simple, economical, and complete realizations of supersymmetry at the weak scale.

Dichromatic Dark Matter

Both the robust INTEGRAL 511 keV gamma-ray line and the recent tentative hint of the 135 GeV gamma-ray line from Fermi-LAT have similar signal morphologies, and may be produced from the same dark matter annihilation. Motivated by this observation, we construct a dark matter model to explain both signals and to accommodate the two required annihilation cross sections that are different by more than six orders of magnitude. In our model, to generate the low-energy positrons for INTEGRAL, dark matter particles annihilate into a complex scalar that couples to photon via a charge-radius operator. The complex scalar contains an excited state decaying into the ground state plus an off-shell photon to generate a pair of positron and electron. Two charged particles with non-degenerate masses are necessary for generating this charge-radius operator. One charged particle is predicted to be long-lived and have a mass around 3.8 TeV to explain the dark matter thermal relic abundance from its late decay. The other charged particle is predicted to have a mass below 1 TeV given the ratio of the two signal cross sections. The 14 TeV LHC will concretely test the main parameter space of this lighter charged particle.

Signature splitting inversion and backbending in 80Rb

High spin states of 80Rb are studied via the fusion-evaporation reactions 65Cu+19F, 66Zn+18O and 68Zn+16O with the beam energies of 75 MeV, 76 MeV and 80 MeV, respectively. Twenty-three new states with twenty-eight new γtransitions were added to the previously proposed level scheme, where the second negative-parity band is significantly pushed up to spins of 22^{-} and 15^{-} and two new sidebands are built on the known first negative-parity band. Two successive band crossings with frequencies 0.51 MeV and 0.61 MeV in the α=0 branch as well as another one in the α=1 branch of the second negative-parity band are observed for the first time. Signature inversions occur in the positive- and first negative-parity bands at the spins of 11\hbar and 15\hbar, respectively. The signature splitting is seen obviously in the second negative-parity band, but the signature inversion is not observed. It is also found that the structure of the two negative-parity bands is similar to that of its isotone ^{82}Y. Signature inversion in the positive-parity yrast band with configuration πg_{9/2} \otimes νg_{9/2} in this nucleus is discussed using the projected shell model (PSM).

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Data Characterization and Map Making

We present a description of the data reduction and mapmaking pipeline used for the 2008 observing season of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). The data presented here at 148 GHz represent 12% of the 90 TB collected by ACT from 2007 to 2010. In 2008 we observed for 136 days, producing a total of 1423 hours of data (11 TB for the 148 GHz band only), with a daily average of 10.5 hours of observation. From these, 1085 hours were devoted to a 850 deg^2 stripe (11.2 hours by 9.1 deg) centered on a declination of -52.7 deg, while 175 hours were devoted to a 280 deg^2 stripe (4.5 hours by 4.8 deg) centered at the celestial equator. We discuss sources of statistical and systematic noise, calibration, telescope pointing, and data selection. Out of 1260 survey hours and 1024 detectors per array, 816 hours and 593 effective detectors remain after data selection for this frequency band, yielding a 38% survey efficiency. The total sensitivity in 2008, determined from the noise level between 5 Hz and 20 Hz in the time-ordered data stream (TOD), is 32 micro-Kelvin sqrt{s} in CMB units. Atmospheric brightness fluctuations constitute the main contaminant in the data and dominate the detector noise covariance at low frequencies in the TOD. The maps were made by solving the least-squares problem using the Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient method, incorporating the details of the detector and noise correlations. Cross-correlation with WMAP sky maps, as well as analysis from simulations, reveal that our maps are unbiased at multipoles ell > 300. This paper accompanies the public release of the 148 GHz southern stripe maps from 2008. The techniques described here will be applied to future maps and data releases.

Implementation Of Decoders for LDPC Block Codes and LDPC Convolutional Codes Based on GPUs

With the use of belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes can achieve near-Shannon limit performance. In order to evaluate the error performance of LDPC codes, simulators running on CPUs are commonly used. However, the time taken to evaluate LDPC codes with very good error performance is excessive. In this paper, efficient LDPC block-code decoders/simulators which run on graphics processing units (GPUs) are proposed. We also implement the decoder for the LDPC convolutional code (LDPCCC). The LDPCCC is derived from a pre-designed quasi-cyclic LDPC block code with good error performance. Compared to the decoder based on the randomly constructed LDPCCC code, the complexity of the proposed LDPCCC decoder is reduced due to the periodicity of the derived LDPCCC and the properties of the quasi-cyclic structure. In our proposed decoder architecture, $Γ$ (a multiple of a warp) codewords are decoded together and hence the messages of $Γ$ codewords are also processed together. Since all the $Γ$ codewords share the same Tanner graph, messages of the $Γ$ distinct codewords corresponding to the same edge can be grouped into one package and stored linearly. By optimizing the data structures of the messages used in the decoding process, both the read and write processes can be performed in a highly parallel manner by the GPUs. In addition, a thread hierarchy minimizing the divergence of the threads is deployed, and it can maximize the efficiency of the parallel execution. With the use of a large number of cores in the GPU to perform the simple computations simultaneously, our GPU-based LDPC decoder can obtain hundreds of times speedup compared with a serial CPU-based simulator and over 40 times speedup compared with an 8-thread CPU-based simulator.

On PMU Location Selection for Line Outage Detection in Wide-area Transmission Networks

The optimal PMU locations to collect voltage phase angle measurements for detecting line outages in wide-area transmission networks are investigated. The problem is established as one of maximizing the minimum distance among the voltage phase angle signatures of the outages, which can be equivalently formulated as an integer programming problem. Based on a greedy heuristic and a linear programming relaxation, a branch and bound algorithm is proposed to find the globally optimal PMU locations. Using this algorithm, the optimal tradeoff between the number of PMUs and the outage detection performance is characterized for IEEE 14, 24 and 30 bus systems. The algorithm is shown to find the globally optimal PMU locations in a small number of iterations. It is observed that it is sufficient to have roughly one third of the buses providing PMU measurements in order to achieve the same outage detection performance as with all the buses providing PMU measurements.

Magnetoresistance measurements of Graphene at the Charge Neutrality Point

We report on transport measurements of the insulating state that forms at the charge neutrality point of graphene in a magnetic field. Using both conventional two-terminal measurements, sensitive to bulk and edge conductance, and Corbino measurements, sensitive only to the bulk conductance, we observed a vanishing conductance with increasing magnetic fields. By examining the resistance changes of this insulating state with varying perpendicular and in-plane fields, we probe the spin-active components of the excitations in total fields of up to 45 Tesla. Our results indicate that ν=0 quantum Hall state in single layer graphene is not spin polarized.

Capacity Factors of a Point-to-point Network

In this paper, we investigate some properties on capacity factors, which were proposed to investigate the link failure problem from network coding. A capacity factor (CF) of a network is an edge set, deleting which will cause the maximum flow to decrease while deleting any proper subset will not. Generally, a $k$-CF is a minimal (not minimum) edge set which will cause the network maximum flow decrease by $k$. Under point to point acyclic scenario, we characterize all the edges which are contained in some CF, and propose an efficient algorithm to classify. And we show that all edges on some $s$-$t$ path in an acyclic point-to-point acyclic network are contained in some 2-CF. We also study some other properties of CF of point to point network, and a simple relationship with CF in multicast network. On the other hand, some computational hardness results relating to capacity factors are obtained. We prove that deciding whether there is a capacity factor of a cyclic network with size not less a given number is NP-complete, and the time complexity of calculating the capacity rank is lowered bounded by solving the maximal flow. Besides that, we propose the analogous definition of CF on vertices and show it captures edge capacity factors as a special case.

Diagnosing the top-quark angular asymmetry using LHC intrinsic charge asymmetries

Flavor-violating interactions involving new heavy particles are among proposed explanations for the $t\bar t$ forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron. Many of these models generate a $t\bar t$-plus-jet signal at the LHC. In this paper we identify several new charge asymmetric variables in $t\bar tj$ events that can contribute to the discovery of such models at the LHC. We propose a data-driven method for the background, largely eliminating the need for a Monte Carlo prediction of $t\bar t$-plus-jets, and thus reducing systematic errors. With a fast detector simulation, we estimate the statistical sensitivity of our variables for one of these models, finding that charge-asymmetric variables could materially assist in the exclusion of the Standard Model across much of the mass and coupling range, given 5 inverse fb of data. Should any signal appear, our variables will be useful in distinguishing classes of models from one another.

Recovering Particle Masses from Missing Energy Signatures with Displaced Tracks

If physics beyond the Standard Model contains metastable new particle states, its signatures may manifest themselves at the LHC through the presence of displaced vertices or displaced tracks. Such signatures are common in low-scale supersymmetry breaking scenarios as well as a host of other well-studied new physics models. Here we analyze the kinematics of dual cascade decays with missing energy resulting from a stable non-interacting new particle state at the bottom of the decay chain. We find that if the final step of the decay chain involves a metastable particle, the resulting presence of displaced tracks provides strong constraints with which to solve for the unknown kinematic quantities lost through missing energy. In addition we develop techniques with which to recover all kinematic unknowns, even in situations where the unknown quantities outnumber the constraints. These techniques can all be performed using a very small number of events and can thus be applied to very early discovery level searches at the LHC.

Simplified Models for LHC New Physics Searches

This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.

On the Sum-Capacity with Successive Decoding in Interference Channels

In this paper, we investigate the sum-capacity of the two-user Gaussian interference channel with Gaussian superposition coding and successive decoding. We first examine an approximate deterministic formulation of the problem, and introduce the complementarity conditions that capture the use of Gaussian coding and successive decoding. In the deterministic channel problem, we find the constrained sum-capacity and its achievable schemes with the minimum number of messages, first in symmetric channels, and then in general asymmetric channels. We show that the constrained sum-capacity oscillates as a function of the cross link gain parameters between the information theoretic sum-capacity and the sum-capacity with interference treated as noise. Furthermore, we show that if the number of messages of either of the two users is fewer than the minimum number required to achieve the constrained sum-capacity, the maximum achievable sum-rate drops to that with interference treated as noise. We provide two algorithms (a simple one and a finer one) to translate the optimal schemes in the deterministic channel model to the Gaussian channel model. We also derive two upper bounds on the sum-capacity of the Gaussian Han-Kobayashi schemes, which automatically upper bound the sum-capacity using successive decoding of Gaussian codewords. Numerical evaluations show that, similar to the deterministic channel results, the constrained sum-capacity in the Gaussian channels oscillates between the sum-capacity with Han-Kobayashi schemes and that with single message schemes.

Optimal Spectrum Management in Multiuser Interference Channels

In this paper, we study the non-convex problem of continuous frequency optimal spectrum management in multiuser frequency selective interference channels. Firstly, a simple pairwise channel condition for FDMA schemes to achieve all Pareto optimal points of the rate region is derived. It enables fully distributed global optimal decision making on whether any two users should use orthogonal channels. Next, we present in detail an analytical solution to finding the global optimum of sum-rate maximization in two-user symmetric flat channels. Generalizing this solution to frequency selective channels, a convex optimization is established that solves the global optimum. Finally, we show that our method generalizes to K-user (K>=2) weighted sum-rate maximization in asymmetric frequency selective channels, and transform this classic non-convex optimization in the primal domain to an equivalent convex optimization. The complexity is shown to be separable in its dependence on the channel parameters and the power constraints.
