Modelling planar kirigami metamaterials as generalized elastic continua

Kirigami metamaterials dramatically change their shape through a coordinated motion of nearly rigid panels and flexible slits. Here, we study a model system for mechanism-based planar kirigami featuring periodic patterns of quadrilateral panels and rhombi slits, with the goal of predicting their engineering scale response to a broad range of loads. We develop a generalized continuum model based on the kirigami's effective (cell-averaged) nonlinear deformation, along with its slit actuation and gradients thereof. The model accounts for three sources of elasticity: a strong preference for the effective fields to match those of a local mechanism, inter-panel stresses arising from gradients in slit actuation, and distributed hinge bending. We provide a finite-element formulation of this model and implement it using the commercial software Abaqus. Simulations of the model agree quantitatively with experiments across designs and loading conditions.

Gate-tunable Lifshitz transition of Fermi arcs and its nonlocal transport signatures

One hallmark of the Weyl semimetal is the emergence of Fermi arcs (FAs) in the surface Brillouin zone that connect the projected Weyl nodes of opposite chirality. The unclosed FAs can give rise to various exotic effects that have attracted tremendous research interest. The configurations of the FAs are usually thought to be determined fully by the band topology of the bulk states, which seems impossible to manipulate. Here, we show that the FAs can be simply modified by a surface gate voltage. Because the penetration length of the surface states depends on the in-plane momentum, a surface gate voltage induces an effective energy dispersion. As a result, a continuous deformation of the surface band can be implemented by tuning the surface gate voltage. In particular, as the saddle point of the surface band meets the Fermi energy, the topological Lifshitz transition takes place for the FAs, during which the Weyl nodes switch their partners connected by the FAs. Accordingly, the magnetic Weyl orbits composed of the FAs on opposite surfaces and chiral Landau bands inside the bulk change its configurations. We show that such an effect can be probed by the nonlocal transport measurements in a magnetic field, in which the switch on and off of the nonlocal conductance by the surface gate voltage signals the Lifshitz transition. Our work opens a new route for manipulating the FAs by surface gates and exploring novel transport phenomena associated with the topological Lifshitz transition.

The clamped intensity of femtosecond laser pulses varying with gas pressure in the presence of external focusing

We perform a theoretical investigation of the clamped laser intensity inside the filament plasma as a function of gas pressure with external focusing. Unlike the clamped intensity under the selffocusing condition, which is independent on the gas pressure, the clamped intensity with external focusing decreases with the gas pressure. Our findings can explain the changes of the signals of femtosecond-laser-induced 391-nm forward emission and fluorescence with the nitrogen gas pressure.

Continuum field theory for the deformations of planar kirigami

Mechanical metamaterials exhibit exotic properties at the system level, that emerge from the interactions of many nearly rigid building blocks. Determining these emergent properties theoretically has remained an open challenge outside of a few select examples. Here, for a large class of periodic and planar kirigami, we provide a coarse-graining rule linking the design of the panels and slits to the kirigami's macroscale deformations. The procedure gives a system of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) expressing geometric compatibility of angle functions related to the motion of individual slits. Leveraging known solutions of the PDE, we present excellent agreement between simulations and experiments across kirigami designs. The results reveal a surprising nonlinear wave-type response persisting even at large boundary loads, the existence of which is determined completely by the Poisson's ratio of the unit cell.

Conductance oscillation in surface junctions of Weyl semimetals

Fermi arc surface states, the manifestation of the bulk-edge correspondence in Weyl semimetals, have attracted much research interest. In contrast to the conventional Fermi loop, the disconnected Fermi arcs provide an exotic 2D system for exploration of novel physical effects on the surface of Weyl semimetals. Here, we propose that visible conductance oscillation can be achieved in the planar junctions fabricated on the surface of Weyl semimetal with a pair of Fermi arcs. It is shown that Fabry-Pérot-type interference inside the 2D junction can generate conductance oscillation with its visibility strongly relying on the shape of the Fermi arcs and their orientation relative to the strip electrodes, the latter clearly revealing the anisotropy of the Fermi arcs. Moreover, we show that the visibility of the oscillating pattern can be significantly enhanced by a magnetic field perpendicular to the surface taking advantage of the bulk-surface connected Weyl orbits. Our work offers an effective way for the identification of Fermi arc surface states through transport measurement and predicts the surface of Weyl semimetal as a novel platform for the implementation of 2D conductance oscillation.

Andreev Reflection in Fermi Arc Surface States of Weyl Semimetals

Fermi arc surface states are the hallmark of Weyl semimetals, whose identification is usually challenged by their coexistence with gapless bulk states. Surface transport measurements by fabricating setups on the sample boundary provide a natural solution to this problem. Here, we study the Andreev reflection (AR) in a planar normal metal-superconductor junction on the Weyl semimetal surface with a pair of Fermi arcs. For a conserved transverse momentum, the occurrence of normal reflection depends on the relative orientation between the Fermi arcs and the normal of the junction, which is a direct result of the disconnected Fermi arcs. Consequently, a crossover from the suppressed to perfect AR occurs with varying the orientation of the planar junction, giving rise to a change from double-peak to plateau structure in conductance spectra. Moreover, such a crossover can be facilitated by imposing a magnetic field, making electrons slide along the Fermi arcs so as to switch between two regimes of the AR. Our results provide a decisive signature for the detection of Fermi arcs and open the possibilities of exploring novel phenomenology through their interplay with superconductivity.

A Split-face Study of Novel Robotic Prototype vs Human Operator in Skin Rejuvenation Using Q-switched Nd:Yag Laser: Accuracy, Efficacy and Safety

Background: Robotic technologies involved in skin laser are emerging. Objective: To compare the accuracy, efficacy and safety of novel robotic prototype with human operator in laser operation performance for skin photo-rejuvenation. Methods: Seventeen subjects were enrolled in a prospective, comparative split-face trial. Q-switch 1064nm laser conducted by the robotic prototype was provided on the right side of the face and that by the professional practitioner on the left. Each subject underwent a single time, one-pass, non-overlapped treatment on an equal size area of the forehead and cheek. Objective assessments included: treatment duration, laser irradiation shots, laser coverage percentage, VISIA parameters, skin temperature and the VAS pain scale. Results: Average time taken by robotic manipulator was longer than human operator; the average number of irradiation shots of both sides had no significant differences. Laser coverage rate of robotic manipulator (60.2 +-15.1%) was greater than that of human operator (43.6 +-12.9%). The VISIA parameters showed no significant differences between robotic manipulator and human operator. No short or long-term side effects were observed with maximum VAS score of 1 point. Limitations: Only one section of laser treatment was performed. Conclusion: Laser operation by novel robotic prototype is more reliable, stable and accurate than human operation.

Phonon heat conduction in Al1-xScxN thin films

Aluminum scandium nitride alloy (Al1-xScxN) is regarded as a promising material for high-performance acoustic devices used in wireless communication systems. Phonon scattering and heat conduction processes govern the energy dissipation in acoustic resonators, ultimately determining their performance quality. This work reports, for the first time, on phonon scattering processes and thermal conductivity in Al1-xScxN alloys with the Sc content (x) up to 0.26. The thermal conductivity measured presents a descending trend with increasing x. Temperature-dependent measurements show an increase in thermal conductivity as the temperature increases at temperatures below 200K, followed by a plateau at higher temperatures (T> 200K). Application of a virtual crystal phonon conduction model allows us to elucidate the effects of boundary and alloy scattering on the observed thermal conductivity behaviors. We further demonstrate that the alloy scattering is caused mainly by strain-field difference, and less by the atomic mass difference between ScN and AlN, which is in contrast to the well-studied Al1-xGaxN and SixGe1-x alloy systems where atomic mass difference dominates the alloy scattering. This work studies and provides the quantitative knowledge for phonon scattering and the thermal conductivity in Al1-xScxN, paving the way for future investigation of materials and design of acoustic devices.

Barter Exchange via Friends' Friends

Barter exchange studies the setting where each agent owns a good, and they can exchange with each other if that gives them more preferred goods. This exchange will give better outcomes if there are more participants. The challenge here is how to get more participants and our goal is to incentivize the existing participants to invite new participants. However, new participants might be competitors for the existing participants. Therefore, we design an exchange mechanism based on the classical Top Trading Cycle (TTC) algorithm to solve their conflicts. Our mechanism is truthful in terms of revealing their preferences and also guarantees that inviting all their neighbors is a dominant strategy for all participants. The mechanism can be applied in settings where more participants are preferred but no extra budget to reach new participants.

Ultrafast ratchet dynamics of skyrmion by defect engineering under gigahertz magnetic fields

The novel ratchet motion of magnetic skyrmions driven by microwave magnetic fields, with the motion direction and speed tunable by field parameters, provides a promising route to drive magnetic skyrmions in materials with poor conductivity. However, as an indirect motion, skyrmion ratchet motion speed is generally low in comparison with the direct motions driven by current. Toward practical applications, it is important to ask if there are mechanisms to realize ultrafast ratchet motion of magnetic skyrmions and how such novel motion can be integrated into racetrack-type skyrmion devices. In this work, we explore the effects of defects and edges on the ratchet motion of magnetic skyrmions under time-varying magnetic fields in GHz. We demonstrate that the ratchet motion of skyrmion is not only guided along the defect tracks or edges, but also with a remarkable speed-up (with a factor over ten) compared with that in the bulk region. The skyrmion ratchet motion speed reaches 100 m/s along a straight defect track/edge and 10^9 rad/s along a circular edge under a field of ~50 mT, comparable to those direct motions driven by currents. Moreover, the skyrmion ratchet motion along the defect track/edge can be facilely controlled by the field and defect parameters. Analysis based on time-averaged Thiele equation of skyrmion verifies that such a speed-up effect is due to the increased time-averaged driving force perpendicular to the skyrmion motion when it approaches the defect track or edge, analogous to that discovered in direct motions driven by currents.

Reinforcement Learning and Video Games

Reinforcement learning has exceeded human-level performance in game playing AI with deep learning methods according to the experiments from DeepMind on Go and Atari games. Deep learning solves high dimension input problems which stop the development of reinforcement for many years. This study uses both two techniques to create several agents with different algorithms that successfully learn to play T-rex Runner. Deep Q network algorithm and three types of improvements are implemented to train the agent. The results from some of them are far from satisfactory but others are better than human experts. Batch normalization is a method to solve internal covariate shift problems in deep neural network. The positive influence of this on reinforcement learning has also been proved in this study.

Intention Oriented Image Captions with Guiding Objects

Although existing image caption models can produce promising results using recurrent neural networks (RNNs), it is difficult to guarantee that an object we care about is contained in generated descriptions, for example in the case that the object is inconspicuous in the image. Problems become even harder when these objects did not appear in training stage. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for generating image captions with guiding objects (CGO). The CGO constrains the model to involve a human-concerned object when the object is in the image. CGO ensures that the object is in the generated description while maintaining fluency. Instead of generating the sequence from left to right, we start the description with a selected object and generate other parts of the sequence based on this object. To achieve this, we design a novel framework combining two LSTMs in opposite directions. We demonstrate the characteristics of our method on MSCOCO where we generate descriptions for each detected object in the images. With CGO, we can extend the ability of description to the objects being neglected in image caption labels and provide a set of more comprehensive and diverse descriptions for an image. CGO shows advantages when applied to the task of describing novel objects. We show experimental results on both MSCOCO and ImageNet datasets. Evaluations show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art models in the task with average F1 75.8, leading to better descriptions in terms of both content accuracy and fluency.

A modified formula for non-Arrhenius diffusion of helium in metals

Helium diffusion in metals is the basic requirement of nucleation and growth of bubble, which gives rise to adverse degradation effects on mechanical properties of structural materials in reactors under irradiation. Lattice based Kinetic Monte Carlo approach is widely adopted to study the evolution of helium-vacancy clustering. However, the imple-mentation of Arrhenius law to prediction the event rate of single interstitial helium solute diffusion in metal is not always appropriate due to low-energy barrier. Based on a stochastic model, a modified formula is derived from the Brownian motion upon a cosine-type potential. Using the parameters obtained from molecular dynamics simulation for the diffusivity of single helium solute in BCC W, the prediction of our model is consistent with the results from dynamical simulation and previous model. This work would help to develop a more accurate KMC scheme for the growth of helium-vacancy clusters, as well as other low-energy reactions in materials science.

A practical coarse-grained formula for classical mobility of interstitial helium diffusion in BCC W and Fe

Helium diffusion in metals is the basic requirement of nucleation and growth of bubble, which gives rise to adverse degradation effects on mechanical properties of structural materials in reactors under irradiation. Multi-scale modeling scheme has been developed to study effects of helium on the long-term microstructural evolution. However, the implementation of Arrhenius law based on the quasi-equilibrium reaction process is not appropriate to predict the migration behavior of helium in metals due to low-energy barrier. A coarse-grained formula is required to incorporate the non-equilibrium nature, e.g., the dissipative friction coefficient $γ$. In this paper, we derive an analytical expression for $γ$ based on a coarse-grained model of Brownian motion upon a periodic potential, in terms of dissipative feature of the thermal excitations in the many-body dynamical system by constructing an adiabatic relaxation process, which is then confirmed by a numerical example of vacancy migration in BCC W. Then the many-body dynamics simulations are performed for helium migration in BCC W and Fe, where the classical mobility are obtained and in good agreement with the data from experiments and other calculations. Finally, we propose a coarse-grained formula for the helium migration in BCC W and Fe, i.e., Eq.(47) in the context, using the calculated parameters from the adiabatic relaxation simulations. This work would help to develop a new multi-scale modeling scheme for effects of helium in metals, as well as the atomistic reactions with low-energy pathways in materials science.

Skyrmion ratchet effect driven by a biharmonic force

Based on micromagnetic simulation and analysis of Thiele's equation, in this work we demonstrate that ratchet motion of skyrmion can be induced by a biharmonic in-plane magnetic field hx(t) = h1sin(mwt) + h2sin(nwt + phi), provided that integers m and n are coprime and that m + n is odd. Remarkably, the speed and direction of the ratchet motion can be readily adjusted by the field amplitude, frequency and phase, with the maximum speed being over 5 m/s and the direction rotatable over 360 degree. The origin of the skyrmion ratchet motion is analyzed by tracing the excitation spectra of the dissipation parameter D and the skyrmion position R, and it shows that the dissipative force plays a key role in the appearance of ratchet motion. Such a ratchet motion of skyrmion is distinguished from those caused by single-frequency ac drives reported in the literature, and from that driven by pulsed magnetic fields as also predicted in this work. Our results show that skyrmion ratchet effect under biharmonic forces shares some common features of those found in many soliton systems, and the facile controllability of both the skyrmion speed and direction should be useful in practice.

Harnessing Geometric Frustration to Form Band Gaps in Acoustic Channel Lattices

We demonstrate both numerically and experimentally that geometric frustration in two-dimensional periodic acoustic networks consisting of arrays of narrow air channels can be harnessed to form band gaps (ranges of frequency in which the waves cannot propagate in any direction through the system). While resonant standing wave modes and interferences are ubiquitous in all the analyzed network geometries, we show that they give rise to band gaps only in the geometrically frustrated ones (i.e. those comprising of triangles and pentagons). Our results not only reveal a new mechanism based on geometric frustration to suppress the propagation of pressure waves in specific frequency ranges, but also opens avenues for the design of a new generation of smart systems that control and manipulate sound and vibrations.

Transitionless-based shortcuts for rapidly generating two-atom 3D entanglement

An experimentally feasible scheme is proposed for rapidly generating two-atom three-dimensional (3D) entanglement with one step. As one technique of shortcuts to adiabaticity, transitionless quantum driving is applied to speed up the adiabatic generation of two-atom 3D entanglement. Apart from the rapid rate, the scheme has much higher experimental feasibility than the recent research (Quant. Inf. Process. DOI: 10.1007/s11128-016-1453-2, 2016). Besides, numerical simulations indicate the scheme has strong robustness against parameter deviations and decoherence.
