A large family of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ and their associated MRD codes

The concept of linear set in projective spaces over finite fields was introduced by Lunardon in 1999 and it plays central roles in the study of blocking sets, semifields, rank-distance codes and etc. A linear set with the largest possible cardinality and rank is called maximum scattered. Despite two decades of study, there are only a limited number of maximum scattered linear sets of a line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$. In this paper, we provide a large family of new maximum scattered linear sets over $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ for any even $n\geq 6$ and odd $q$. In particular, the relevant family contains at least \[ \begin{cases} \left\lfloor\frac{q^t+1}{8rt}\right\rfloor,& \text{ if }t\not\equiv 2\pmod{4};\\[8pt] \left\lfloor\frac{q^t+1}{4rt(q^2+1)}\right\rfloor,& \text{ if }t\equiv 2\pmod{4}, \end{cases} \] inequivalent members for given $q=p^r$ and $n=2t>8$, where $p=\mathrm{char}(\mathbb{F}_q)$. This is a great improvement of previous results: for given $q$ and $n>8$, the number of inequivalent maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ in all classes known so far, is smaller than $q^2$. Moreover, we show that there are a large number of new maximum rank-distance codes arising from the constructed linear sets.

Deformation-Aware Robotic 3D Ultrasound

Tissue deformation in ultrasound (US) imaging leads to geometrical errors when measuring tissues due to the pressure exerted by probes. Such deformation has an even larger effect on 3D US volumes as the correct compounding is limited by the inconsistent location and geometry. This work proposes a patient-specified stiffness-based method to correct the tissue deformations in robotic 3D US acquisitions. To obtain the patient-specified model, robotic palpation is performed at sampling positions on the tissue. The contact force, US images and the probe poses of the palpation procedure are recorded. The contact force and the probe poses are used to estimate the nonlinear tissue stiffness. The images are fed to an optical flow algorithm to compute the pixel displacement. Then the pixel-wise tissue deformation under different forces is characterized by a coupled quadratic regression. To correct the deformation at unseen positions on the trajectory for building 3D volumes, an interpolation is performed based on the stiffness values computed at the sampling positions. With the stiffness and recorded force, the tissue displacement could be corrected. The method was validated on two blood vessel phantoms with different stiffness. The results demonstrate that the method can effectively correct the force-induced deformation and finally generate 3D tissue geometries

Impact of Local Energy Markets on the Distribution Systems: A Comprehensive Review

In recent years extensive research has been conducted on the development of different models that enable energy trading between prosumers and consumers due to expected high integration of distributed energy resources. Some of the most researched mechanisms include Peer-to-Peer energy trading, Community Self-Consumption and Transactive Energy Models. Here, we present an exhaustive review of existing research around Local Energy Market integration into distribution systems, in particular benefits and challenges that the power grid can expect from integrating these models. We also present a detailed overview of methods that are used to integrate physical network constraints into the market mechanisms, their advantages, drawbacks, and scaling potential. We find that financial energy transactions do not directly reflect the physical energy flows imposed by the constraints of the installed electrical infrastructure. Therefore, ensuring the stable and reliable delivery of electricity, it is vital to understand the impact of these transactions on the grid infrastructure, e.g., impacts on the control, operation, and planning of electricity distribution systems.

Dense Label Encoding for Boundary Discontinuity Free Rotation Detection

Rotation detection serves as a fundamental building block in many visual applications involving aerial image, scene text, and face etc. Differing from the dominant regression-based approaches for orientation estimation, this paper explores a relatively less-studied methodology based on classification. The hope is to inherently dismiss the boundary discontinuity issue as encountered by the regression-based detectors. We propose new techniques to push its frontier in two aspects: i) new encoding mechanism: the design of two Densely Coded Labels (DCL) for angle classification, to replace the Sparsely Coded Label (SCL) in existing classification-based detectors, leading to three times training speed increase as empirically observed across benchmarks, further with notable improvement in detection accuracy; ii) loss re-weighting: we propose Angle Distance and Aspect Ratio Sensitive Weighting (ADARSW), which improves the detection accuracy especially for square-like objects, by making DCL-based detectors sensitive to angular distance and object's aspect ratio. Extensive experiments and visual analysis on large-scale public datasets for aerial images i.e. DOTA, UCAS-AOD, HRSC2016, as well as scene text dataset ICDAR2015 and MLT, show the effectiveness of our approach. The source code is available at https://github.com/Thinklab-SJTU/DCL_RetinaNet_Tensorflow and is also integrated in our open source rotation detection benchmark: https://github.com/yangxue0827/RotationDetection.

Two new infinite classes of APN functions

In this paper, we present two new infinite classes of APN functions over $\gf_{2^{2m}}$ and $\gf_{2^{3m}}$, respectively. The first one is with bivariate form and obtained by adding special terms, $\sum(a_ix^{2^i}y^{2^i},b_ix^{2^i}y^{2^i})$, to a known class of APN functions by {G{ö}lo{ǧ}lu} over $\gf_{2^m}^2$. The second one is of the form $L(z)^{2^m+1}+vz^{2^m+1}$ over $\gf_{2^{3m}}$, which is a generalization of one family of APN functions by Bracken et al. [Cryptogr. Commun. 3 (1): 43-53, 2011]. The calculation of the CCZ-invariants $Γ$-ranks of our APN classes over $\gf_{2^8}$ or $\gf_{2^9}$ indicates that they are CCZ-inequivalent to all known infinite families of APN functions. Moreover, by using the code isomorphism, we see that our first APN family covers an APN function over $\gf_{2^8}$ obtained through the switching method by Edel and Pott in [Adv. Math. Commun. 3 (1): 59-81, 2009].

AIPerf: Automated machine learning as an AI-HPC benchmark

The plethora of complex artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and available high performance computing (HPC) power stimulates the expeditious development of AI components with heterogeneous designs. Consequently, the need for cross-stack performance benchmarking of AI-HPC systems emerges rapidly. The de facto HPC benchmark LINPACK can not reflect AI computing power and I/O performance without representative workload. The current popular AI benchmarks like MLPerf have fixed problem size therefore limited scalability. To address these issues, we propose an end-to-end benchmark suite utilizing automated machine learning (AutoML), which not only represents real AI scenarios, but also is auto-adaptively scalable to various scales of machines. We implement the algorithms in a highly parallel and flexible way to ensure the efficiency and optimization potential on diverse systems with customizable configurations. We utilize operations per second (OPS), which is measured in an analytical and systematic approach, as the major metric to quantify the AI performance. We perform evaluations on various systems to ensure the benchmark's stability and scalability, from 4 nodes with 32 NVIDIA Tesla T4 (56.1 Tera-OPS measured), up to 512 nodes with 4096 Huawei Ascend 910 (194.53 Peta-OPS measured), and the results show near-linear weak scalability. With flexible workload and single metric, our benchmark can scale and rank AI-HPC easily.

Remarks on Viscosity Super-Solutions of Quasi-Variational Inequalities

For Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations, with the standard definitions of viscosity super-solution and sub-solution, it is known that there is a comparison between any (viscosity) super-solutions and sub-solutions. This should be the same for HJB type quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs) arising from optimal impulse control problems. However, according to a natural adoption of the definition found in Barles 1985, Barles 1985b, the uniqueness of the viscosity solution could be guaranteed, but the comparison between viscosity super- and sub-solutions could not be guaranteed. This paper introduces a modification of the definition for the viscosity super-solution of HJB type QVIs so that the desired comparison theorem will hold.

Beyond intensity modulation: new approaches to pump-probe microscopy

Pump-probe microscopy is an emerging nonlinear imaging technique based on high repetition rate lasers and fast intensity modulation. Here we present new methods for pump-probe microscopy that keep the beam intensity constant and instead modulate the inter-pulse time delay, the relative polarization, or the pulse length. These techniques can improve image quality for samples that have poor heat dissipation or long-lived radiative states, and can selectively address nonlinear interactions in the sample. We experimentally demonstrate this approach and point out the advantages over conventional intensity modulation.

The number of almost perfect nonlinear functions grows exponentially

Almost perfect nonlinear (APN) functions play an important role in the design of block ciphers as they offer the strongest resistance against differential cryptanalysis. Despite more than 25 years of research, only a limited number of APN functions are known. In this paper, we show that a recent construction by Taniguchi provides at least $\frac{φ(m)}{2}\left\lceil \frac{2^m+1}{3m} \right\rceil$ inequivalent APN functions on the finite field with ${2^{2m}}$ elements, where $φ$ denotes Euler's totient function. This is a great improvement of previous results: for even $m$, the best known lower bound has been $\frac{φ(m)}{2}\left(\lfloor \frac{m}{4}\rfloor +1\right)$, for odd $m$, there has been no such lower bound at all. Moreover, we determine the automorphism group of Taniguchi's APN functions.

Continuity of the Value Function for Deterministic Optimal Impulse Control with Terminal State Constraint

Deterministic optimal impulse control problem with terminal state constraint is considered. Due to the appearance of the terminal state constraint, the value function might be discontinuous in general. The main contribution of this paper is the introduction of an intrinsic condition under which the value function is continuous. Then by a Bellman dynamic programming method, the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman type quasi-variational inequality (QVI, for short) is derived for which the value function is a viscosity solution. The issue of whether the value function is characterized as the unique viscosity solution to this QVI is carefully addressed and the answer is left open challengingly.

Decentralized Ride-Sharing and Vehicle-Pooling Based on Fair Cost-Sharing Mechanisms

Ride-sharing or vehicle-pooling allows commuters to team up spontaneously for transportation cost sharing. This has become a popular trend in the emerging paradigm of sharing economy. One crucial component to support effective ride-sharing is the matching mechanism that pairs up suitable commuters. Traditionally, matching has been performed in a centralized manner, whereby an operator arranges ride-sharing according to a global objective (e.g., total cost of all commuters). However, ride-sharing is a decentralized decision-making paradigm, where commuters are self-interested and only motivated to team up based on individual payments. Particularly, it is not clear how transportation cost should be shared fairly between commuters, and what ramifications of cost-sharing are on decentralized ride-sharing. This paper sheds light on the principles of decentralized ride-sharing and vehicle-pooling mechanisms based on stable matching, such that no one would be better off to deviate from a stable matching outcome. We study various fair cost-sharing mechanisms and the induced stable matching outcomes. We compare the stable matching outcomes with a social optimal outcome (that minimizes total cost) by theoretical bounds of social optimality ratios, and show that several fair cost-sharing mechanisms can achieve high social optimality. We also corroborate our results with an empirical study of taxi sharing under fair cost-sharing mechanisms by a data analysis on New York City taxi trip dataset, and provide useful insights on effective decentralized mechanisms for practical ride-sharing and vehicle-pooling.

MRD codes with maximum idealizers

Left and right idealizers are important invariants of linear rank-distance codes. In the case of maximum rank-distance (MRD for short) codes in $\mathbb{F}_q^{n\times n}$ the idealizers have been proved to be isomorphic to finite fields of size at most $q^n$. Up to now, the only known MRD codes with maximum left and right idealizers are generalized Gabidulin codes, which were first constructed in 1978 by Delsarte and later generalized by Kshevetskiy and Gabidulin in 2005. In this paper we classify MRD codes in $\mathbb{F}_q^{n\times n}$ for $n\leq 9$ with maximum left and right idealizers and connect them to Moore-type matrices. Apart from generalized Gabidulin codes, it turns out that there is a further family of rank-distance codes providing MRD ones with maximum idealizers for $n=7$, $q$ odd and for $n=8$, $q\equiv 1 \pmod 3$. These codes are not equivalent to any previously known MRD code. Moreover, we show that this family of rank-distance codes does not provide any further examples for $n\geq 9$.

A symmetric function generalization of the Zeilberger--Bressoud $q$-Dyson theorem

In 2000, Kadell gave an orthogonality conjecture for a symmetric function generalization of the Zeilberger--Bressoud $q$-Dyson theorem or the $q$-Dyson constant term identity. This conjecture was proved by Károlyi, Lascoux and Warnaar in 2015. In this paper, by slightly changing the variables of Kadell's conjecture, we obtain another symmetric function generalization of the $q$-Dyson constant term identity. This new generalized constant term admits a simple product-form expression.

Stock Index Prediction with Multi-task Learning and Word Polarity Over Time

Sentiment-based stock prediction systems aim to explore sentiment or event signals from online corpora and attempt to relate the signals to stock price variations. Both the feature-based and neural-networks-based approaches have delivered promising results. However, the frequently minor fluctuations of the stock prices restrict learning the sentiment of text from price patterns, and learning market sentiment from text can be biased if the text is irrelevant to the underlying market. In addition, when using discrete word features, the polarity of a certain term can change over time according to different events. To address these issues, we propose a two-stage system that consists of a sentiment extractor to extract the opinion on the market trend and a summarizer that predicts the direction of the index movement of following week given the opinions of the news over the current week. We adopt BERT with multitask learning which additionally predicts the worthiness of the news and propose a metric called Polarity-Over-Time to extract the word polarity among different event periods. A Weekly-Monday prediction framework and a new dataset, the 10-year Reuters financial news dataset, are also proposed.

Asymptotics of Moore exponent sets

Let $n$ be a positive integer and $I$ a $k$-subset of integers in $[0,n-1]$. Given a $k$-tuple $A=(α_0, \cdots, α_{k-1})\in \mathbb{F}^k_{q^n}$, let $M_{A,I}$ denote the matrix $(α_i^{q^j})$ with $0\leq i\leq k-1$ and $j\in I$. When $I=\{0,1,\cdots, k-1\}$, $M_{A,I}$ is called a Moore matrix which was introduced by E. H. Moore in 1896. It is well known that the determinant of a Moore matrix equals $0$ if and only if $α_0,\cdots, α_{k-1}$ are $\mathbb{F}_q$-linearly dependent. We call $I$ that satisfies this property a Moore exponent set. In fact, Moore exponent sets are equivalent to maximum rank-distance (MRD) code with maximum left and right idealisers over finite fields. It is already known that $I=\{0,\cdots, k-1\}$ is not the unique Moore exponent set, for instance, (generalized) Delsarte-Gabidulin codes and the MRD codes recently discovered by Csajbók, Marino, Polverino and the second author both give rise to new Moore exponent sets. By using algebraic geometry approach, we obtain an asymptotic classification result: for $q>5$, if $I$ is not an arithmetic progression, then there exist an integer $N$ depending on $I$ such that $I$ is not a Moore exponent set provided that $n>N$.

Using Machine Learning to Forecast Future Earnings

In this essay, we have comprehensively evaluated the feasibility and suitability of adopting the Machine Learning Models on the forecast of corporation fundamentals (i.e. the earnings), where the prediction results of our method have been thoroughly compared with both analysts' consensus estimation and traditional statistical models. As a result, our model has already been proved to be capable of serving as a favorable auxiliary tool for analysts to conduct better predictions on company fundamentals. Compared with previous traditional statistical models being widely adopted in the industry like Logistic Regression, our method has already achieved satisfactory advancement on both the prediction accuracy and speed. Meanwhile, we are also confident enough that there are still vast potentialities for this model to evolve, where we do hope that in the near future, the machine learning model could generate even better performances compared with professional analysts.

Satirical News Detection with Semantic Feature Extraction and Game-theoretic Rough Sets

Satirical news detection is an important yet challenging task to prevent spread of misinformation. Many feature based and end-to-end neural nets based satirical news detection systems have been proposed and delivered promising results. Existing approaches explore comprehensive word features from satirical news articles, but lack semantic metrics using word vectors for tweet form satirical news. Moreover, the vagueness of satire and news parody determines that a news tweet can hardly be classified with a binary decision, that is, satirical or legitimate. To address these issues, we collect satirical and legitimate news tweets, and propose a semantic feature based approach. Features are extracted by exploring inconsistencies in phrases, entities, and between main and relative clauses. We apply game-theoretic rough set model to detect satirical news, in which probabilistic thresholds are derived by game equilibrium and repetition learning mechanism. Experimental results on the collected dataset show the robustness and improvement of the proposed approach compared with Pawlak rough set model and SVM.
