Inverting cosmic ray propagation by Convolutional Neural Networks

We propose a machine learning method to investigate the propagation of cosmic rays based on the precisely measured spectra of the primary and secondary cosmic ray nuclei of Li, Be, B, C, and O from AMS-02, ACE, and Voyager-1. We train two convolutional neural networks. One network learns how to infer propagation and source parameters from the energy spectra of cosmic rays, and the other network, which is similar to the former, has the flexibility to learn from the data with added artificial fluctuations. Together with the simulated data generated by GALPROP, we find that both networks can properly invert the propagation process and infer the propagation and source parameters reasonably well. This approach can be much more efficient than the traditional Markov chain Monte Carlo fitting method for deriving the propagation parameters if users choose to update confidence intervals with new experimental data. Both of the trained networks are available at (https://github.com/alan200276/CR_ML).

Shedding light on dark matter with recent muon $(g-2)$ and Higgs exotic decay measurements

Recently, we have witnessed two hints of physics beyond the standard model: A 3.3$σ$ local excess ($M_{A_0} = 52$ GeV) in the search for $H_0\to A_0 A_0\to b\bar{b}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ and a 4.2$σ$ deviation from the SM prediction in the $(g-2)_μ$ measurement. The first excess was found by the ATLAS Collaboration using 139 fb$^{-1}$ data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The second deviation is a combination of the results from the Brookhaven E821 and the recently reported Fermilab E989 experiment. We attempt to explain these deviations in terms of a renormalizable simplified dark matter model. Inspired by the null signal result from dark matter (DM) direct detection, we interpret the possible new particle, $A_0$, as a pseudoscalar mediator connecting DM and the standard model. On the other hand, a new vector-like muon lepton can explain these two excesses at the same time while contributiong to the DM phenomenology.

Sensitivity of SKA to dark matter induced radio emission

Conventionally, one can constrain the dark matter (DM) interaction with DM mass heavier than GeV by searching for DM induced synchrotron emission in the radio frequency band. However, an MeV DM can also generate detectable radio emission if electrons and positrons produced by DM annihilation or decay undergoes inverse Compton scattering (ICS) with the cosmic microwave background. The upcoming radio telescope Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is designed to operate with extremely high sensitivity. We investigate the capability of the SKA to detect DM particles in a board mass range from MeV to TeV, for both annihilation and decay scenarios. In this paper, we consider the sensitivities of the future SKA first and second phase (SKA1 and SKA2). As a comprehensive study, we systematically study the impacts on the DM-induced signal computation from the magnetic field strengths and particle diffusion coefficients. We compare the detection potential of four very different sources: two dwarf spheroidal galaxies (Draco and Segue 1), one radio-poor cluster (A2199), and one DM-rich ultra-diffuse galaxy (Dragonfly 44). We project the SKA1 and SKA2 sensitivities with the exposure of 100 hours on the annihilation cross section and decay time for DM mass from MeV to TeV by considering two different leptonic final states $e^+ e^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$.

A common origin of muon g-2 anomaly, Galaxy Center GeV excess and AMS-02 anti-proton excess in the NMSSM

The supersymmetric model is one of the most attractive extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. In light of the most recently reported anomaly of the muon g-2 measurement by the FermiLab E989 experiment, and the excesses of gamma rays at the Galactic center observed by Fermi-LAT space telescope, as well as the antiproton excess observed by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, we propose to account for all these anomalies or excesses in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Considering various experimental constraints including the Higgs mass, B-physics, collider data, dark matter relic density and direct detections, we find that a $\sim 60$ GeV bino-like neutralino is able to successfully explain all these observations. Our scenario can be sensitively probed by future direct detection experiments.

A convolutional-neural-network estimator of CMB constraints on dark matter energy injection

We show that the impact of energy injection by dark matter annihilation on the cosmic microwave background power spectra can be apprehended via a residual likelihood map. By resorting to convolutional neural networks that can fully discover the underlying pattern of the map, we propose a novel way of constraining dark matter annihilation based on the Planck 2018 data. We demonstrate that the trained neural network can efficiently predict the likelihood and accurately place bounds on the annihilation cross-section in a $\textit{model-independent}$ fashion. The machinery will be made public in the near future.

Self-interacting Dark Matter with Scalar Dilepton Mediator

The cold dark matter (CDM) candidate with weakly interacting massive particles can successfully explain the observed dark matter relic density in cosmic scale and the large-scale structure of the Universe. However, a number of observations at the satellite galaxy scale seem to be inconsistent with CDM simulation. This is known as the small-scale problem of CDM. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) with a light mediator offers a reasonable explanation for the small-scale problem. We adopt a simple model with SIDM and focus on the effects of Sommerfeld enhancement. In this model, the dark matter candidate is a leptonic scalar particle with a light mediator. We have found several regions of the parameter space with proper masses and coupling strength generating a relic density that is consistent with the observed CDM relic density. Furthermore, this model satisfies the constraints of recent direct searches and indirect detection for dark matter as well as the effective number of neutrinos and the observed small-scale structure of the Universe. In addition, this model with the favored parameters can resolve the discrepancies between astrophysical observations and $N$-body simulations.

Elastic and Inelastic Scattering of Cosmic-Rays on Sub-GeV Dark Matter

We revisit the signatures from collisions of cosmic-rays on sub-GeV dark matter (DM) in the Milky Way. In addition to the upscattered DM component that can be probed by existing DM and neutrino experiments widely discussed, we examine the associated signals in $γ$-rays and neutrinos that span a wide energy range due to the inelastic scatterings. Assuming a simple vector portal DM model for illustration, we compute both the upscattered DM flux by cosmic-ray protons, and the resulting emission of secondary $γ$-rays and high-energy neutrinos from proton excitation, hadronization, and the subsequent meson decay. We derive limits on coupling constants in the vector portal model using data from the $γ$-ray and high-energy neutrino telescopes including Fermi, H.E.S.S. and IceCube. These limits are compared to those obtained by considering the upscattered DM signals at the low-energy DM/neutrino detectors XENON1T/MiniBooNE and the IceCube. For this particular model, the limits are set predominantly by non-detection of the upscattered DM events in XENON1T, for most of the DM mass range due to the large scattering cross section at low energies. Nevertheless, our study demonstrates that the $γ$-ray and neutrino signals, traditionally considered as indirect probes for DM annihilation and decay, can also be directly used to constrain the DM--nucleon interaction in complementary to the direct search experiments.

Probing Cosmic-Ray Accelerated Light Dark Matter with IceCube

The direct detection of particle dark matter through its scattering with nucleons is of fundamental importance to understand the nature of DM. In this work, we propose that the high-energy neutrino detectors like IceCube can be used to uniquely probe the DM-nucleon cross-section for high-energy DM of $\sim$ PeV, up-scattered by the high-energy cosmic rays. We derive for the first time strong constraints on the DM-nucleon cross-section down to $\sim 10^{-32}$ cm$^2$ at this energy scale for sub-GeV DM candidates. Such independent probe at energy scale far exceeding other existing direct detection experiments can therefore provide useful insights complementary to other searches.

Confronting dark matter co-annihilation of Inert two Higgs Doublet Model with a compressed mass spectrum

We perform a comprehensive analysis for the light scalar dark matter (DM)in the Inert two Higgs doublet model (i2HDM) with compressed mass spectra, small mass splittings among three $\mathbb{Z}_2$ odd particles---scalar $S$, pseudo-scalar $A$, and charged Higgs $H^\pm$. In such a case, the co-annihilation processes play a significant role to reduce DM relic density. As long as a co-annihilation governs the total interaction rate in the early universe, a small annihilation rate is expected to reach a correct DM relic density and its coupling $λ_S$ between DM pair and Higgs boson shall be tiny. Consequently, a negligible DM-nucleon elastic scattering cross section is predicted at the tree-level. In this work, we include the one-loop quantum corrections of the DM-nucleon elastic scattering cross section. We found that the quartic self-coupling $λ_2$ between $\mathbb{Z}_2$ odd particles indeed contributes to the one-loop quantum correction and behaves non-trivially for the co-annihilation scenario. Interestingly, the parameter space, which is allowed by the current constraints considered in this study, can predict the DM mass and annihilation cross section at the present compatible with the AMS-02 antiproton excess. The parameter space can be further probed at the future high luminosity LHC.

Complex Scalar Dark Matter in G2HDM

The complex scalar dark matter (DM) candidate in the gauged two Higgs doublet model (G2HDM), stabilized by a peculiar hidden parity ($h$-parity), is studied in detail. We explore the parameter space for the DM candidate by taking into account the most recent DM constraints from various experiments, in particular, the PLANCK relic density measurement and the current DM direct detection limit from XENON1T. We separate our analysis in three possible compositions for the mixing of the complex scalar. We first constrain our parameter space with the vacuum stability and perturbative unitarity conditions for the scalar potential, LHC Higgs measurements, plus Drell-Yan and electroweak precision test constraints on the gauge sector. We find that DM dominated by composition of the inert doublet scalar is completely excluded by further combining the previous constraints with both the latest results from PLANCK and XENON1T. We also demonstrate that the remaining parameter space with two other DM compositions can be further tested by indirect detection like the future CTA gamma-ray telescope.

Light Fermionic WIMP Dark Matter with Light Scalar Mediator

A light fermionic weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter is investigated by studying its minimal renormalizable model, where it requires a scalar mediator to have an interaction between the WIMP and standard model particles. We perform a comprehensive likelihood analysis of the model involving the latest but robust constraints and those will be obtained in the near future. In addition, we pay particular attention to properly take the kinematically equilibrium condition into account. It is shown that near-future experiments and observations such as low-mass direct dark matter detections, flavor experiments and CMB observations play important roles to test the model. Still, a wide parameter region will remain even if no WIMP and mediator signals are detected there. We also show that precise Higgs boson measurements at future lepton colliders will significantly test this remaining region.

Consistency of Gauged Two Higgs Doublet Model: Gauge Sector

We study the constraints on the new parameters in the gauge sector of gauged two Higgs doublet model using the electroweak precision test data collected from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP) at and off the Z-pole as well as the current Drell-Yan and high-mass dilepton resonance data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Impacts on the new parameters by the projected sensitivities of various electroweak observables at the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) proposed to be built in China are also discussed. We also clarify why the Stüeckelberg mass $M_Y$ for the hypercharge $U(1)_Y$ is set to be zero in the model by showing that it would otherwise lead to the violation of the standard charge assignments for the elementary quarks and leptons.

Consistency of a gauged two-Higgs-doublet model: Scalar sector

We study the theoretical and phenomenological constraints imposed on the scalar sector of the gauged two Higgs doublet model proposed recently as a variant of the popular inert Higgs doublet model of dark matter. The requirements of tree-level vacuum stability and perturbative unitarity in the scalar sector are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, taking into account the constraints from the 125 GeV Higgs boson measurements at the Large Hadron Collider, we map out the allowed ranges for the fundamental parameters of the scalar potential in the model.

The impact of EDGES 21-cm data on dark matter interactions

The recently announced results on the 21-cm absorption spectrum by the EDGES experiment can place very stringent limits on dark matter annihilation cross-sections. We properly take into account the heating energy released from dark matter annihilation from the radiation epoch to the 21-cm observation redshifts in the radiative transfer to compute the evolution of the gas temperature. Our results show that the global 21-cm absorption profile is a powerful cosmological probe of the dark matter interactions. For dark matter annihilating into electron-positron pairs, the EDGES results give a more stringent upper limit than the PLANCK result on the annihilation cross section at the lower dark matter mass region.

Sneutrino Dark Matter via pseudoscalar X-funnel meets Inverse Seesaw

In this paper we study sneutrino dark matter in a recently proposed supersymmetric electroweak-scale inverse seesaw model, in which the majority of the sneutrino dark matter particle is a mixture of the right-handed sneutrino $\tilde{N}^c$ and the singlet field $\tilde{S}$. The scalar field $X$ responsible for the generation of neutrino masses can simultaneously play a crucial role for sneutrino annihilation in the early Universe via the pseudoscalar mediator $A_X$ into neutrinos. We focus here on the dominant annihilation channels and provide all the formulas together with analytic estimates in order to identify the relevant parameters. Furthermore, we show that the direct detection scattering cross section is many orders of magnitude below the current limits, and estimate the indirect detection annihilation rate, which is only a few orders of magnitude below the current limits.

The Importance of Quantum Pressure of Fuzzy Dark Matter on Lyman-Alpha Forest

With recent Lyman-alpha forest data from BOSS and XQ-100, some studies suggested that the lower mass limit on the fuzzy dark matter (FDM) particles is lifted up to $10^{-21}\,\mathrm{eV}$. However, such a limit was obtained by $Λ$CDM simulations with the FDM initial condition and the quantum pressure (QP) was not taken into account which could have generated non-trivial effects in large scales structures. We investigate the QP effects in cosmological simulations systematically, and find that the QP leads to further suppression of the matter power spectrum at small scales, as well as the halo mass function in the low mass end. We estimate the suppressing effect of QP in the 1D flux power spectrum of Lyman-alpha forest and compare it with data from BOSS and XQ-100. The rough uncertainties of thermal gas properties in the flux power spectrum model calculation were discussed. We conclude that more systematic studies, especially with QP taken into account, are necessary to constrain FDM particle mass using Lyman-alpha forest.

Signals of New Gauge Bosons in Gauged Two Higgs Doublet Model

Recently a gauged two Higgs doublet model, in which the two Higgs doublets are embedded into the fundamental representation of an extra local $SU(2)_H$ group, is constructed. Both the new gauge bosons $Z^\prime$ and $W^{\prime (p,m)}$ are electrically neutral. While $Z^\prime$ can be singly produced at colliders, $W^{\prime (p,m)}$, which is heavier, must be pair produced. We explore the constraints of $Z^\prime$ using the current Drell-Yan type data from the Large Hadron Collider. Anticipating optimistically that $Z^\prime$ can be discovered via the clean Drell-Yan type signals at high luminosity upgrade of the collider, we explore the detectability of extra heavy fermions in the model via the two leptons/jets plus missing transverse energy signals from the exotic decay modes of $Z^\prime$. For the $W^{\prime (p,m)}$ pair production in a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider, we demonstrate certain kinematical distributions for the two/four leptons plus missing energy signals have distinguishable features from the Standard Model background. In addition, comparisons of these kinematical distributions between the gauged two Higgs doublet model and the littlest Higgs model with T-parity, the latter of which can give rise to the same signals with competitive if not larger cross sections, are also presented.
