Topology optimization of anisotropic elastic metamaterial with broadband double-negative index

Aiming at the promising superlensing for the medical ultrasonic and detection, the double-negative metamaterials which possess the negative mass density and elastic modulus simultaneously can be acted as the ideal superlens for breaking the diffraction limit. In this paper, we use topology optimization to design the two-dimensional single-phase anisotropic elastic metamaterials with broadband double-negative indices and numerically demonstrate the superlensing at the deep-subwavelength scale. We also discuss the impact of several parameters adopted in the objective function and constraints on the optimized results. Unlike all previous reported mechanisms, our optimized structures exhibit the new quadrupolar or multipolar resonances for the negative mass density, negative longitudinal and shear moduli. In addition, we observe the negative refraction of transverse waves in a single-phase material. Most structures can serve as the anisotropic zero-index metamaterials for the longitudinal or transverse wave at a certain frequency. The cloaking effect is demonstrated for both the longitudinal and transverse waves. Moreover, with the particular constraints in optimization, we design a super-anisotropic metamaterial exhibiting the double-negative and hyperbolic dispersions along two principal directions, respectively. Our optimization work provides a robust computational approach to negative index engineering in elastic metamaterials and guides design of other kinds of metamaterials, including the electromagnetic and acoustic metamaterials. The unusual properties of our optimized structures are likely to inspire new ideas and novel applications including the low-frequency vibration attenuation, flat lens and ultrasonography for elastic waves in the future.

Inverse design of high-Q wave filters in two-dimensional phononic crystals by topology optimization

Topology optimization of a waveguide-cavity structure in phononic crystals for designing narrow band filters under the given operating frequencies is presented in this paper. We show that it is possible to obtain an ultra-high-Q filter by only optimizing the cavity topology without introducing any other coupling medium. The optimized cavity with highly symmetric resonance can be utilized as the multi-channel filter, raising filter and T-splitter. In addition, most optimized high-Q filters have the Fano resonances near the resonant frequencies. Furthermore, our filter optimization based on the waveguide and cavity, and our simple illustration of a computational approach to wave control in phononic crystals can be extended and applied to design other acoustic devices or even opto-mechanical devices.

Reducing symmetry in topology optimization of two-dimensional porous phononic crystals

In this paper we present a comprehensive study on the multi-objective optimization of two-dimensional porous phononic crystals (PnCs) in both square and triangular lattices with the reduced topology symmetry of the unit-cell. The fast non-dominated sorting-based genetic algorithm II is used to perform the optimization, and the Pareto-optimal solutions are obtained. The results demonstrate that the symmetry reduction significantly influences the optimized structures. The physical mechanism of the optimized structures is analyzed. Topology optimization combined with the symmetry reduction can discover new structures and offer new degrees of freedom to design PnC-based devices. Especially, the rotationally symmetrical structures presented here can be utilized to explore and design new chiral metamaterials.

Bandgaps and directional propagation of elastic waves in two-dimensional square zigzag lattice structures

In this paper we propose some kinds of two-dimensional square zigzag lattice structures and study their bandgaps and directional propagation of elastic waves. The band structures and the transmission spectra of the systems are calculated by using the finite element method. The effects of the geometry parameters of the 2d-zigzag lattices on the bandgaps are investigated and discussed. The mechanism of the bandgap generation is analyzed by studying the vibration modes at the bandgap edges. Multiple wide complete bandgaps are found in a wide porosity range owing to the separation of the degeneracy by introducing bending arms. The bandgaps are sensitive to the geometry parameters of the systems. The deformed displacement fields of the transient response of finite structures subjected to harmonic loads are presented to show the directional wave propagation. The research work in this paper is relevant to the practical design of cellular structures with enhanced vibro-acoustics performance.

Topology optimization of simultaneous photonic and phononic bandgaps and highly effective phoxonic cavity

By using the non-dominated sorting-based genetic algorithm II, we study the topology optimization of the two-dimensional phoxonic crystals (PxCs) with simultaneously maximal and complete photonic and phononic bandgaps. Our results show that the optimized structures are composed of the solid lumps with narrow connections, and their Pareto-optimal solution set can keep a balance between photonic and phononic bandgap widths. Moreover, we investigate the localized states of PxCs based on the optimized structure and obtain structures with more effectively multimodal photon and phonon localization. The presented structures with highly focused energy are good choices for the PxC sensors. For practical application, we design a simple structure with smooth edges based on the optimized structure. It is shown that the designed simple structure has the similar properties with the optimized structure, i.e. simultaneous wide phononic and photonic bandgaps and a highly effective phononic/photonic cavity, see Figures 8(b) and 8(c).

Size effect on deformation twinning at the nanoscale in hcp metals

Deformation twinning is generally considered to be the primary mechanism for hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metals due to their limited slip systems. Recent microcompression experiments on hcp metals point to intriguing strong size effects on twinning mechanisms, indicating that pyramidal slips dominate compression. In this work we analyze size effects on twinning due to lattice-rotation strain in hcp single crystals. A criterion for deformation twinning is derived at the nanoscale and tested by molecular dynamics simulations of magnesium and titanium single crystals. The results show pyramidal slip dominates the compression deformation at the nanoscale, consistent with experimental observations as well as our analysis. Our finding clarifies the nature of size effects in deformation twinning, while also providing an explanation for the so-called strength differential (SD) effect.

Two-dimensional ternary locally resonant phononic crystals with a comblike coating

Two-dimensional ternary locally resonant phononic crystals used to consist of cylindrical scatterers with uniform coatings in their exterior. An alternative coating scheme with a comblike profile is proposed and investigated in this letter. The band structures are calculated by using the finite element method. It is found that a complete bandgap at a significantly low frequency can be induced. The mechanism for such a change is suggested by using an equivalent spring-mass model based on analyzing the eigen modes at the bandgap edges. Consistent results are obtained from the numerical results and the analysis of the spring-mass model.
