$\mathbb{Z}_2$-projective translational symmetry protected topological phases

Symmetry is fundamental to topological phases. In the presence of a gauge field, spatial symmetries will be projectively represented, which may alter their algebraic structure and generate novel topological phases. We show that the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ projectively represented translational symmetry operators adopt a distinct commutation relation, and become momentum dependent analogous to twofold nonsymmorphic symmetries. Combined with other internal or external symmetries, they give rise to many exotic band topology, such as the degeneracy over the whole boundary of the Brillouin zone, the single fourfold Dirac point pinned at the Brillouin zone corner, and the Kramers degeneracy at every momentum point. Intriguingly, the Dirac point criticality can be lifted by breaking one primitive translation, resulting in a topological insulator phase, where the edge bands have a Möbius twist. Our work opens a new arena of research for exploring topological phases protected by projectively represented space groups.

Ideal Unconventional Weyl Point in a Chiral Photonic Metamaterial

Unconventional Weyl points (WPs), carrying topological charge 2 or higher, possess interesting properties different from ordinary charge-1 WPs, including multiple Fermi arcs that stretch over a large portion of the Brillouin zone. Thus far, such WPs have been observed in chiral materials and acoustic metamaterials, but there has been no clean demonstration in photonics in which the unconventional photonic WPs are separated from trivial bands. We experimentally realize an ideal symmetry-protected photonic charge-2 WP in a three-dimensional topological chiral microwave metamaterial. We use field mapping to directly observe the projected bulk dispersion, as well as the two long surface arcs that form a noncontractible loop wrapping around the surface Brillouin zone. The surface states span a record-wide frequency window of around 22.7% relative bandwidth. We demonstrate that the surface states exhibit a novel topological self-collimation property and are robust against disorder. This work provides an ideal photonic platform for exploring fundamental physics and applications of unconventional WPs.

Angular momentum Josephson effect between two isolated condensates

We demonstrate that the two degenerate energy levels in spin-orbit coupled trapped Bose gases, coupled by a quenched Zeeman field, can be used for angular momentum Josephson effect. In a static quenched field, we can realize a Josephson oscillation with period ranging from millisecond to hundreds of milliseconds. Moreover, by a driven Zeeman field, we realize a new Josephson oscillation, in which the population imbalance may have the same expression as the current in the directed current (dc) Josephson effect. When the dynamics of condensate can not follow up the modulation frequency, it the self-trapping regime. This new dynamics is understood from the time dependent evolution of the constant-energy trajectory in phase space. This model has several salient advantages as compared with the previous ones. The condensates are isolated from their excitations by a finite gap, thus can greatly suppress the damping effect induced by thermal atoms and Bogoliubov excitations. The oscillation period can be tuned by several order of magnitudes without influencing other parameters. In experiments, the dynamics can be mapped out from spin and momentum spaces, thus is not limited by the spatial resolution in imaging. This system can serve as a promising platform for exploring of matter wave interferometry.

Bose-Einstein condensate in Bloch bands with off-diagonal periodic potential

We report the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the Bloch bands with off-diagonal periodic potential (ODPP), which simultaneously plays the role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman field. This model can be realized using two independent Raman couplings in the same three level system, in which the time-reversal symmetry ensures the energy degeneracy between the two states with opposite momenta. We find that these two Raman couplings can be used to tune the spin polarization in momentum space, thus greatly modifies the effective scatterings over the Bloch bands. We observe a transition from the Bloch plane wave phase with condensate at one wave vector to the Bloch stripe phase with condensates at the two Bloch states with opposite wave vectors. These two phases will exhibit totally different spin textures and density modulations in real space, which are totally different from that in free space. In momentum space multiple peaks differ by some reciprocal lattice vectors can be observed, reflecting the periodic structure of the ODPP. A three-band effective model is proposed to understand these observations. This system can provide a new platform in investigating of various physics, such as collective excitations, polaron and topological superlfuids, over the Bloch bands.

Anomalous isothermal compressibility in spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gases

The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in degenerate Fermi gases can fundamentally change the fate of $s$-wave superfluids with strong Zeeman field and give rise to topological superfluids and associated Majorana zero modes. It also dramatically changes the thermodynamic properties of the superfluids. Here we report the anomalous isothermal compressibility $κ_T$ in this superfluids with both SOC and Zeeman field. We formulate this quantity from the Gibbs-Duhem equation and show that the contribution of $κ_T$ comes from the explicit contribution of chemical potential and implicit contribution of order parameter. In the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limit, this compressibility is determined by the density of state near the Fermi surface; while in the Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) regime it is determined by the scattering length. Between these two limits, we find that the anomalous peaks can only be found in the gapless Weyl phase regime. This anomalous behavior can be regarded as a remanent effect of phase separation. The similar physics can also be found in the lattice model away from half filling. These predictions can be measured from the anomalous response of sound velocity and fluctuation of carrier density.

Emergent Haldane phase in an alternating bond $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain

The Haldane phase represents one of the most important symmetry protected states in modern physics. This state can be realized using spin-1 and spin-${1\over 2}$ Heisenberg models and bosonic particles. Here we explore the emergent Haldane phase in an alternating bond $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain, which is different from the previous proposals from fundamental statistics and symmetries. We show that this emergent phase can also be characterized by a modified long-range string order, as well as four-fold degeneracy in the ground state energies and entanglement spectra. This phase is protected by both the charge conjugate and parity symmetry, and the edge modes are shown to satisfy parafermionic statistics, in which braiding of the two edge modes yields a ${2π\over 3}$ phase. This model also supports rich phases, including topological ferromagnetic parafermion (FP) phase, trivial paramagnetic parafermion phase, classical dimer phase and gapless phase. The boundaries of the FP phase are shown to be gapless and critical with central charge $c = 4/5$. Even in the topological FP phase, it is also characterized by the long-range string order, thus we observe a drop of string order across the phase boundary between the FP phase and Haldane phase. These phenomena are quite general and this work opens a new way for finding exotic topological phases in $\mathbb{Z}_k$ parafermion models.

Topological phase, supercritical point and emergent phenomena in extended $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain

Topological orders and associated topological protected excitations satisfying non-Abelian statistics have been widely explored in various platforms. The $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions are regarded as the most natural generation of the Majorana fermions to realize these topological orders. Here we investigate the topological phase and emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin phases in an extended parafermion chain. This model exhibits rich variety of phases, including not only topological ferromagnetic phase, which supports non-Abelian anyon excitation, but also spin-fluid, dimer and chiral phases from the emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin model. We generalize the measurement tools in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin models to fully characterize these phases in the extended parafermion model and map out the corresponding phase diagram. Surprisingly, we find that all the phase boundaries finally merge to a single supercritical point. In regarding of the rather generality of emergent phenomena in parafermion models, this approach opens a wide range of intriguing applications in investigating the exotic phases in other parafermion models.

Gapped topological Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluids with artificial gauge potential and weak interaction

The topological superfluids with Majorana zero modes have not yet been realized in ultracold atoms with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Here we show that these phases can be realized with an artificial gauge potential, which can be regarded as a site-dependent rotating Zeeman field. This potential breaks the inversion symmetry and plays the same role as Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In the inverted bands, this model can open a proper parameter regime for topological superfluids. Strikingly, we find that the interaction near the Fermi surface is dominated by the dispersion scattering in the same band, thus can realize topological phase with much weaker attractive interaction, as compared with the model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We find a large regime for the gapped topological Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluids and unveil the phase diagram with mean-field theory, which should be credible in the weak interaction regime. In regarding the negligible heating effect in realizing this potential in alkaline and rare-earth atoms, our model has the potential to be the first system to realize the long-sought topological FFLO phase and the associated Majorana zero modes.
