Notes on flat-space limit of AdS/CFT

Different frameworks exist to describe the flat-space limit of AdS/CFT, include momentum space, Mellin space, coordinate space, and partial-wave expansion. We explain the origin of momentum space as the smearing kernel in Poincare AdS, while the origin of latter three is the smearing kernel in global AdS. In Mellin space, we find a Mellin formula that unifies massless and massive flat-space limit, which can be transformed to coordinate space and partial-wave expansion. Furthermore, we also manage to transform momentum space to smearing kernel in global AdS, connecting all existed frameworks. Finally, we go beyond scalar and verify that $\langle VV\mathcal{O}\rangle$ maps to photon-photon-massive amplitudes.

Helicity basis for three-dimensional conformal field theory

Three-point correlators of spinning operators admit multiple tensor structures compatible with conformal symmetry. For conserved currents in three dimensions, we point out that helicity commutes with conformal transformations and we use this to construct three-point structures which diagonalize helicity. In this helicity basis, OPE data is found to be diagonal for mean-field correlators of conserved currents and stress tensor. Furthermore, we use Lorentzian inversion formula to obtain anomalous dimensions for conserved currents at bulk tree-level order in holographic theories, which we compare with corresponding flat-space gluon scattering amplitudes.

Heavy-light Bootstrap from Lorentzian Inversion Formula

We study heavy-light four-point function by employing Lorentzian inversion formula, where the conformal dimension of heavy operator is as large as central charge $C_T\rightarrow\infty$. We implement the Lorentzian inversion formula back and forth to reveal the universality of the lowest-twist multi-stress-tensor $T^k$ as well as large spin double-twist operators $[\mathcal{O}_H\mathcal{O}_L]_{n',J'}$. In this way, we also propose an algorithm to bootstrap the heavy-light four-point function by extracting relevant OPE coefficients and anomalous dimensions. By following the algorithm, we exhibit the explicit results in $d=4$ up to the triple-stress-tensor. Moreover, general dimensional heavy-light bootstrap up to the double-stress-tensor is also discussed, and we present an infinite series representation of the lowest-twist double-stress-tensor OPE coefficient. Exact expressions of lowest-twist double-stress-tensor OPE coefficients in $d=6,8,10$ are also obtained as further examples.

Quasi-topological Electromagnetism: Dark Energy, Dyonic Black Holes, Stable Photon Spheres and Hidden Electromagnetic Duality

We introduce the quasi-topological electromagnetism which is defined to be the squared norm of the topological 4-form $F\wedge F$. A salient property is that its energy-momentum tensor is of the isotropic perfect fluid with the pressure being precisely the opposite to its energy density. It can thus provide a model for dark energy. We study its application in both black hole physics and cosmology. The quasi-topological term has no effect on the purely electric or magnetic Reissner-Nordström black holes, the dyonic solution is however completely modified. We find that the dyonic black holes can have four real horizons. For suitable parameters, the black hole can admit as many as three photon spheres, with one being stable. Another intriguing property is that although the quasi-topological term breaks the electromagnetic duality, the symmetry emerges in the on-shell action in the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. In cosmology, we demonstrate that the quasi-topological term alone is equivalent to a cosmological constant, but the model provides a mechanism for the dark energy to couple with other types of matter. We present a concrete example of the quasi-topological electromagnetism coupled to a scalar field that admits the standard FLRW cosmological solutions.

Holographic OPE Coefficients from AdS Black Holes with Matters

We study the OPE coefficients $c_{Δ, J}$ for heavy-light scalar four-point functions, which can be obtained holographically from the two-point function of a light scalar of some non-integer conformal dimension $Δ_L$ in an AdS black hole. We verify that the OPE coefficient $c_{d,0}=0$ for pure gravity black holes, consistent with the tracelessness of the holographic energy-momentum tensor. We then study the OPE coefficients from black holes involving matter fields. We first consider general charged AdS black holes and we give some explicit low-lying examples of the OPE coefficients. We also obtain the recursion formula for the lowest-twist OPE coefficients with at most two current operators. For integer $Δ_L$, although the OPE coefficients are not fully determined, we set up a framework to read off the coefficients $γ_{Δ,J}$ of the $\log(z\bar{z})$ terms that are associated with the anomalous dimensions of the exchange operators and obtain a general formula for $γ_{Δ,J}$. We then consider charged AdS black holes in gauged supergravity STU models in $D=5$ and $D=7$, and their higher-dimensional generalizations. The scalar fields in the STU models are conformally massless, dual to light operators with $Δ_L=d-2$. We derive the linear perturbation of such a scalar in the STU charged AdS black holes and obtain the explicit OPE coefficient $c_{d-2,0}$. Finally, we analyse the asymptotic properties of scalar hairy AdS black holes and show how $c_{d,0}$ can be nonzero with exchanging scalar operators in these backgrounds.

Holographic Studies of The Generic Massless Cubic Gravities

We consider the generic massless cubic gravities coupled to a negative bare cosmological constant mainly in $D=5$ and $D=4$ dimensions, which are Einstein gravity extended with cubic curvature invariants where the linearized excited spectrum around the AdS background contains no massive modes. The generic massless cubic gravities are more general than Myers quasi-topological gravity in $D=5$ and Einsteinian cubic gravity in $D=4$. It turns out that the massless cubic gravities admit the black holes at least in a perturbative sense with the coupling constants of the cubic terms becoming infinitesimal. The first order approximate black hole solutions with arbitrary boundary topology $k$ are presented, and in addition, the second order approximate planar black holes are exhibited as well. We then establish the holographic dictionary for such theories by presenting $a$-charge, $C_T$-charge and energy flux parameters $t_2$ and $t_4$. By perturbatively discussing the holographic Rényi entropy, we find $a$, $C_T$ and $t_4$ can somehow determine the Rényi entropy with the limit $q\rightarrow 1$, $q\rightarrow 0$ and $q\rightarrow \infty$ up to the first order, where $q$ is the order of the Rényi entropy. For holographic hydrodynamics, we discuss the shear-viscosity-entropy-ratio and find that the patterns deviating from the KSS bound $1/(4π)$ can somehow be controlled by $((c-a)/c,t_4)$ up to the first order in $D=5$, and $((\mathcal{C}_T-\tilde{a})/\mathcal{C}_T,t_4)$ up to the second order in $D=4$, where $\mathcal{C}_T$ and $\tilde{a}$ differ from $C_T$-charge and $a$-charge by inessential overall constants.

Scale Invariance vs. Conformal Invariance: Holographic Two-Point Functions in Horndeski Gravity

We consider Einstein-Horndeski gravity with a negative bare constant as a holographic model to investigate whether a scale invariant quantum field theory can exist without the full conformal invariance. Einstein-Horndeski gravity can admit two different AdS vacua. One is conformal, and the holographic two-point functions of the boundary energy-momentum tensor are the same as the ones obtained in Einstein gravity. The other AdS vacuum, which arises at some critical point of the coupling constants, preserves the scale invariance but not the special conformal invariance due to the logarithmic radial dependence of the Horndeski scalar. In addition to the transverse and traceless graviton modes, the theory admits an additional trace/scalar mode in the scale invariant vacuum. We obtain the two-point functions of the corresponding boundary operators. We find that the trace/scalar mode gives rise to an non-vanishing two-point function, which distinguishes the scale invariant theory from the conformal theory. The two-point function vanishes in $d=2$, where the full conformal symmetry is restored. Our results indicate the strongly coupled scale invariant unitary quantum field theory may exist in $d\ge 3$ without the full conformal symmetry. The operator that is dual to the bulk trace/scalar mode however violates the dominant energy condition.

Universal Structure of Covariant Holographic Two-Point Functions In Massless Higher-Order Gravities

We consider massless higher-order gravities in general $D=d+1$ dimensions, which are Einstein gravity extended with higher-order curvature invariants in such a way that the linearized spectrum around the AdS vacua involves only the massless graviton. We derive the covariant holographic two-point functions and find that they have a universal structure. In particular, the theory-dependent overall coefficient factor $\mathcal{C}_T$ can be universally expressed by $(d-1) \mathcal{C}_T=\ell (\partial a/\partial\ell)$, where $a$ is the holographic $a$-charge and $\ell$ is the AdS radius. We verify this relation in quasi-topological Ricci polynomial, Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet, Einstein-Lovelock and Einstein cubic gravities. In $d=4$, we also find an intriguing relation between the holographic $c$ and $a$ charges, namely $c=\frac{1}{3}\ell (\partial a/\partial \ell)$, which also implies $\mathcal{C}_T=c$.

Exact Embeddings of JT Gravity in Strings and M-theory

We show that two-dimensional JT gravity, the holographic dual of the IR fixed point of the SYK model, can be obtained from the consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of a class of EMD theories in general $D$ dimensions. For $D=4$, $5$, the EMD theories can be themselves embedded in supergravities. These exact embeddings provide the holographic duals in the framework of strings and M-theory. We find that a class of JT gravity solutions can be lifted to become time-dependent charged extremal black holes. They can be further lifted, for example, to describe the D1/D5-branes where the worldsheet is the Milne universe, rather than the typical Minkowski spacetime.

Static Equilibria of Charged Particles Around Charged Black Holes: Chaos Bound and Its Violations

We study the static equilibrium of a charged massive particle around a charged black hole, balanced by the Lorentz force. For a given black hole, the equilibrium surface is determined by the charge/mass ratio of the particle. By investigating a large class of charged black holes, we find that the equilibria can be stable, marginal or unstable. We focus on the unstable equilibria which signal chaotic motions and we obtain the corresponding Lyapunov exponents $λ$. We find that although $λ$ approaches universally the horizon surface gravity $κ$ when the equilibria are close to the horizon, the proposed chaotic motion bound $λ<κ$ is satisfied only by some specific black holes including the RN and RN-AdS black holes. The bound can be violated by a large number of black holes including the RN-dS black holes or black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton, Einstein-Born-Infeld and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell gravities. We find that unstable equilibria can even exist in extremal black holes, implying that the ratio $λ/κ$ can be arbitrarily large for sufficiently small $κ$. Our investigation does suggest a universal bound for sufficiently large $κ$, namely $λ/κ<{\cal C}$ for some order-one constant ${\cal C}$.

An a-theorem for Horndeski Gravity at the Critical Point

We study holographic conformal anomalies and the corresponding $a$-theorem for Einstein gravity extended with Horndeski terms that involve up to and including linear curvature tensors. We focus on our discussion in $D=5$ bulk dimensions. For the generic Horndeski coupling, the $a$-charge is the same as that in Einstein gravity, but the inclusion of the Horndeski term violates the $a$-theorem. However, there exists a critical point of the Horndeski coupling, for which the theory admits nearly AdS spacetimes with non-vanishing Horndeski scalar. The full AdS isometry is broken down by the logarithmic scalar hair to the Poincaré group plus the scale invariance. We find that in this case the $a$-charge depends on the AdS radius $\ell$ and the integration constant $χ_s$ of the Horndeski scalar. In addition, we find that two new central charges emerge, that are absent in gravities with minimally-coupled matter. We call them $b$-charges. These $b$-charges also depend on $\ell$ and $χ_s$. We construct an $a$-function for fixed $\ell$ but with the running Horndeski scalar $χ$ replacing the constant $χ_s$, and establish the holographic $a$-theorem using the null energy condition in the bulk. Furthermore, we find that there exist analogous monotonous $b$-functions as well. We also obtain the $a$-charge and the $a$-theorem in general odd bulk dimensions.

Quasi-Topological Ricci Polynomial Gravities

Quasi-topological terms in gravity can be viewed as those that give no contribution to the equations of motion for a special subclass of metric ansätze. They therefore play no rôle in constructing these solutions, but can affect the general perturbations. We consider Einstein gravity extended with Ricci tensor polynomial invariants, which admits Einstein metrics with appropriate effective cosmological constants as its vacuum solutions. We construct three types of quasi-topological gravities. The first type is for the most general static metrics with spherical, toroidal or hyperbolic isometries. The second type is for the special static metrics where $g_{tt} g_{rr}$ is constant. The third type is the linearized quasi-topological gravities on the Einstein metrics. We construct and classify results that are either dependent on or independent of dimensions, up to the tenth order. We then consider a subset of these three types and obtain Lovelock-like quasi-topological gravities, that are independent of the dimensions. The linearized gravities on Einstein metrics on all dimensions are simply Einstein and hence ghost free. The theories become quasi-topological on static metrics in one specific dimension, but non-trivial in others. We also focus on the quasi-topological Ricci cubic invariant in four dimensions as a specific example to study its effect on holography, including shear viscosity, thermoelectric DC conductivities and butterfly velocity. In particular, we find that the holographic diffusivity bounds can be violated by the quasi-topological terms, which can induce an extra massive mode that yields a butterfly velocity unbound above.

Causality and a-theorem Constraints on Ricci Polynomial and Riemann Cubic Gravities

In this paper, we study Einstein gravity extended with Ricci polynomials and derive the constraints on the coupling constants from the considerations of being ghost free, exhibiting an $a$-theorem and maintaining causality. The salient feature is that Einstein metrics with appropriate effective cosmological constants continue to be solutions with the inclusion of such Ricci polynomials and the causality constraint is automatically satisfied. The ghost free and $a$-theorem conditions can only be both met starting at the quartic order. We also study these constraints on general Riemann cubic gravities.
