Local and global conformal invariants of submanifolds

We develop methods for constructing and computing conformal invariants of submanifolds, with a particular emphasis on conformal submanifold scalars and conformally invariant integrals of natural submanifold scalars. These methods include a direct construction of the extrinsic ambient space, a construction of global invariants of conformally compact minimal submanifolds of conformally compact Einstein manifolds via renormalized extrinsic curvature integrals, and the introduction of a large class of conformal submanifold scalars that are easily computed at minimal submanifolds of Einstein manifolds. As an application, we derive an explicit Gauss--Bonnet--Chern-type formula relating the renormalized area of a conformally compact $k$-dimensional minimal submanifold of a conformally compact Einstein manifold to its Euler characteristic and the integral of a conformal submanifold scalar of weight $-k$. As another application, we prove a rigidity result for conformally compact minimal submanifolds of conformally compact hyperbolic manifolds.

Computing renormalized curvature integrals on Poincar\'e-Einstein manifolds

We describe a general procedure for computing renormalized curvature integrals on Poincar\'e-Einstein manifolds. In particular, we explain the connection between the Gauss-Bonnet-type formulas of Albin and Chang-Qing-Yang for the renormalized volume, and explicitly identify a scalar conformal invariant in the latter formula. Our approach constructs scalar conformal invariants of weight $-n$ on $n$-manifolds, $n \geq 8$, that are natural divergences; these imply that the scalar invariant in the Chang-Qing-Yang formula is not unique in dimension $n \geq 8$. Our procedure also produces explicit conformally invariant Gauss--Bonnet-type formulas for compact Einstein manifolds.

Curved versions of the Ovsienko-Redou operators

We give a complete classification of tangential bidifferential operators of total order at most $n$ which are expressed purely in terms of the Laplacian on the ambient space of an $n$-dimensional manifold. This gives a curved analogue of the classification, due to Ovsienko--Redou and Clerc, of conformally invariant bidifferential operators on the sphere. As an application, we construct a large class of formally self-adjoint conformally invariant differential operators.

Some constructions of formally self-adjoint conformally covariant polydifferential operators

We introduce the notion of formally self-adjoint conformally covariant polydifferential operators and give some constructions of families of such operators. In one direction, we show that any homogeneous conformally variational scalar Riemannian invariant (CVI) induces one of these operators. In another direction, we use the ambient metric to give alternative constructions of certain operators produced this way, one of which is a formally self-adjoint, fourth-order, conformally covariant tridifferential operator which should be regarded as the simplest fully nonlinear analogue of the Paneitz operator.

Deformations of Q-curvature II

This is the second article of a sequence of research on deformations of Q-curvature. In the previous one, we studied local stability and rigidity phenomena of Q-curvature. In this article, we mainly investigate the volume comparison with respect to Q-curvature. In particular, we show that volume comparison theorem holds for metrics close to strictly stable positive Einstein metrics. This result shows that Q-curvature can still control the volume of manifolds under certain conditions, which provides a fundamental geometric characterization of Q-curvature. Applying the same technique, we derive the local rigidity of strictly stable Ricci-flat manifolds with respect to Q-curvature, which shows the non-existence of metrics with positive Q-curvature near the reference metric.

Conformally variational Riemannian invariants

Conformally variational Riemannian invariants (CVIs), such as the scalar curvature, are homogeneous scalar invariants which arise as the gradient of a Riemannian functional. We establish a wide range of stability and rigidity results involving CVIs, generalizing many such results for the scalar curvature.

A symmetric 2-tensor canonically associated to Q-curvature and its applications

In this article, we define a symmetric 2-tensor canonically associated to Q-curvature called J-tensor on any Riemannian manifold with dimension at least three. The relation between J-tensor and Q-curvature is precisely like Ricci tensor and scalar curvature. Thus it can be interpreted as a higher-order analogue of Ricci tensor. This tensor can also be used to understand Chang-Gursky-Yang's theorem on 4-dimensional Q-singular metrics. Moreover, we show an Almost-Schur Lemma holds for Q-curvature, which gives an estimate of Q-curvature on closed manifolds.

Deformations of Q-curvature I

In this article, we investigate deformation problems of $Q$-curvature on closed Riemannian manifolds. One of the most crucial notions we use is the $Q$-singular space, which was introduced by Chang-Gursky-Yang during 1990's. Inspired by the early work of Fischer-Marsden, we derived several results about geometry related to $Q$-curvature. It includes classifications for nonnegative Einstein $Q$-singular spaces, linearized stability of non-$Q$-singular spaces and a local rigidity result for flat manifolds with nonnegative $Q$-curvature. As for global results, we showed that any smooth function can be realized as a $Q$-curvature on generic $Q$-flat manifolds, while on the contrary a locally conformally flat metric on $n$-tori with nonnegative $Q$-curvature has to be flat. In particular, there is no metric with nonnegative $Q$-curvature on $4$-tori unless it is flat.

Connected sum construction of constant Q-curvature manifolds in higher dimensions

For a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g_2)$ with constant $Q$-curvature of dimension $n\geq 6$ satisfying nondegeneracy condition, we show that one can construct many examples of constant $Q$-curvature manifolds by gluing construction. We provide a general procedure of gluing together $(M,g_2)$ with any compact manifold $(N, g_1)$ satisfying a geometric assumption. In particular, we can prove that there exists a metric with constant $Q$-curvature on the connected sum $N #M$.
