$g$-wave altermagnetic order parameter in hematite

Altermagnets combine the vanishing net magnetization of antiferromagnets with momentum-dependent spin splitting. Magnon band splitting provides a direct probe of altermagnetic order and may enable chirality-selective magnon transport, yet the momentum-space symmetry of this splitting has not been determined quantitatively. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to map the momentum dependence of altermagnetic magnon splitting in hematite ($\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$). The splitting vanishes along nodal directions and reaches maxima off the nodes, revealing the $g$-wave symmetry of the altermagnetic order parameter. These results agree with linear spin-wave theory calculations based on the altermagnetic model, which further identify the nondegenerate branches as magnons of opposite chirality and trace the splitting to symmetry-inequivalent long-range exchange interactions. Our results provide the first quantitative determination of the momentum-space symmetry of altermagnetic chiral magnons. These findings, together with hematite's high magnetic ordering temperature and low magnon damping, establish it as a promising platform for low-dissipation, symmetry-selective magnonic applications.

AutoXRD: Autonomous LLM Agents and Comprehensive Evaluation for Powder Diffraction Analysis

Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) is central to materials characterization, yet reliable end-to-end automation remains challenging. An XRD agent must interpret diffraction evidence, operate refinement software, manage coupled parameters in a defensible order, and distinguish numerical improvement from physical validity. In this paper, we propose AutoXRD, an autonomous large language model (LLM) agent framework that organizes powder-XRD analysis as stepwise refinement, grounds actions in observed evidence, and applies deterministic crystallographic and physical checks before accepting results. We further introduce XRDBench with two complementary tracks. XRDBench-QA contains 100 bounded diagnostic tasks that isolate scientific reasoning and decision-making, whereas XRDBench-E2E contains 34 executable workflows that test whether agents can compose these capabilities into complete analyses requiring file inspection, crystallographic-software execution, iterative refinement, evidence preservation, and reporting. We evaluate ten recent LLMs across 1,340 model--task runs. Models average only 57.8 out of 100, falling from 61.9 on XRDBench-QA to 53.7 on XRDBench-E2E. They perform best on refinement-history assessment and result acceptance, but remain substantially weaker on refinement-action selection, phase quantification, indexing, and Rietveld refinement. GPT-5.6 Sol achieves the highest overall score of 81.1, GPT-5.6 Terra the highest XRDBench-E2E point estimate of 81.0, and GPT-5.6 Luna the best score--cost trade-off. Ablations show that all six AutoXRD components consistently improve performance, supporting the framework design. Finally, execution-trace analysis reveals recurring failures in coupled-parameter control, quantitative reasoning, evidence preservation, and workflow termination, motivating stronger scientific constraints, uncertainty-aware decisions, and more efficient planning.

Strain-tunable charge localization coupled to complex magnetic orders in EuAl$_4$

Charge localization is particularly interesting when coupled to antiferromagnetic spin structures. Coupled spin-charge orders are well established in elemental chromium and correlated oxide superconductors, yet the interplay between charge order and more complex magnetic textures -- such as skyrmion lattices and chiral spin structures -- remains largely unexplored. Here we report a comprehensive study of how charge localization couples to the unusually rich sequence of magnetic phases in EuAl$_4$. Using x-ray diffraction under applied magnetic field and uniaxial pressure, we demonstrate a direct coupling between the charge and spin order parameters. In the absence of external stimuli, charge localization is markedly enhanced upon entering the magnetically ordered phases. Strikingly, this effect is highly susceptible to strain: uniaxial pressure applied along the charge-order propagation direction further enhances localization, whereas pressure applied perpendicular to it weakens it. Application of magnetic field reveals both competitive and possible collaborative interactions between spin and charge ordering. This flexible coupling between spin and charge ordering opens a new route to designing symmetry-breaking states. Chiral charge order may for example be patterned from spin structures with that symmetry.

CARE-Edit: Condition-Aware Routing of Experts for Contextual Image Editing

Unified diffusion editors often rely on a fixed, shared backbone for diverse tasks, suffering from task interference and poor adaptation to heterogeneous demands (e.g., local vs global, semantic vs photometric). In particular, prevalent ControlNet and OmniControl variants combine multiple conditioning signals (e.g., text, mask, reference) via static concatenation or additive adapters which cannot dynamically prioritize or suppress conflicting modalities, thus resulting in artifacts like color bleeding across mask boundaries, identity or style drift, and unpredictable behavior under multi-condition inputs. To address this, we propose Condition-Aware Routing of Experts (CARE-Edit) that aligns model computation with specific editing competencies. At its core, a lightweight latent-attention router assigns encoded diffusion tokens to four specialized experts--Text, Mask, Reference, and Base--based on multi-modal conditions and diffusion timesteps: (i) a Mask Repaint module first refines coarse user-defined masks for precise spatial guidance; (ii) the router applies sparse top-K selection to dynamically allocate computation to the most relevant experts; (iii) a Latent Mixture module subsequently fuses expert outputs, coherently integrating semantic, spatial, and stylistic information to the base images. Experiments validate CARE-Edit's strong performance on contextual editing tasks, including erasure, replacement, text-driven edits, and style transfer. Empirical analysis further reveals task-specific behavior of specialized experts, showcasing the importance of dynamic, condition-aware processing to mitigate multi-condition conflicts.

Impact of Electron Correlations on Infinite-Layer Cuprates and Nickelates

Optimization of unconventional superconductivity involves a balance of interaction strengths. Precise determination of correlation strength across different material families is therefore important. Here, we present a combined X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of infinite-layer PrNiO$_2$ and SrCuO$_2$ that enables fair comparison of their interaction strengths. For both compounds, we study the orbital and magnetic excitations and extract their dispersions along high-symmetry directions. Using a single-band Hubbard model and including higher-order exchange interactions, we derive the correlation factor $U/t$ for both compounds. A key finding is that despite a smaller Coulomb repulsion $U$, PrNiO$_2$ exhibits a correlation strength that is 20% stronger than that of its isostructural cuprate counterpart SrCuO$_2$. This indicates that a moderation of the correlation strength may further optimize superconductivity in nickelates.

Persistent paramagnons in high-temperature infinite-layer nickelate superconductors

The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in hole-doped SmNiO$_2$, exhibiting the record-high transition temperature $T_c$ among infinite-layer (IL) nickelates, has opened a new avenue for exploring design principles of superconductivity. Experimentally determining the electronic structure and magnetic interactions in this new system is crucial to elucidating the mechanism behind the enhanced superconductivity. Here, we report a Ni $L$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of superconducting Sm-based IL nickelate thin films Sm$_{1-x-y-z}$Eu$_x$Ca$_y$Sr$_z$NiO$_2$ (SECS). Dispersive paramagnonic excitations are observed in both optimally and overdoped SECS samples, supporting a spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing scenario. However, despite the two-fold enhancement of $T_c$ in the Sm-based nickelates compared to their Pr-based counterparts, the effective exchange coupling strength is reduced by approximately $20\%$. This behavior contrasts with hole-doped cuprates, where magnetic interactions correlate positively with $T_c$, highlighting essential differences in their superconducting mechanisms.

Enhanced Superconductivity and Mixed-dimensional Behaviour in Infinite-layer Samarium Nickelate Thin Films

Rare-earth infinite-layer nickelates represent an emerging class of unconventional superconductors, with materials synthesis largely limited to early lanthanide compounds. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of phase-pure superconducting samarium-based infinite-layer nickelate thin films, including the first demonstration of Sm$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$, along with co-doped variants incorporating europium and calcium. These films, grown on LSAT (001) substrates, exhibit coherent lattice structures up to $\sim$ 9 nm thickness with minimal stacking faults. The co-doped compounds achieve a record-small $c$-axis parameter of 3.26 {\AA} and display remarkable superconducting transition temperatures up to 32.5 K. These results establish a clear correlation between decreasing $c$-axis parameter and increasing critical temperature across different rare-earth systems. In addition, angle-dependent magnetoresistance investigations reveal the existence of a hybrid mixture of 2D and 3D superconductivity in this novel system with enhanced coupling between the rare-earth 5d and Ni 3d orbitals, confirmed by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering experiments. As the concentration of Eu increases, the system exhibits a clear tendency towards 3D superconductivity. Furthermore, we observe distinctive negative magnetoresistance in the europium-containing samples. These findings advocate clear materials design principles for higher transition temperatures and exotic physics in infinite-layer nickelate superconductors through structural engineering of the rare-earth site.
