Full-channel wavefront manipulation of surface waves with chirality-assisted geometric-phase metasurface

Owing to their localized field enhancement and subwavelength resolution, surface waves (SWs) offer broad application potential in communications, sensing, and photonics via on-chip wavefront manipulation. This makes multi-channel SW wavefront manipulation highly desirable. However, conventional metasurfaces for SW wavefront shaping, relying on geometric and propagation phase mechanisms, typically exhibit similar functionalities for co- or cross-polarized output channels under different circularly polarized (CP) incidences, thereby limiting the development of high-capacity on-chip integrated devices. Here, by introducing the chirality-assisted phase as an additional phase control mechanism, we effectively decouple both co- and cross-polarized output channels, enabling independent SW wavefront shaping in four distinct channels. We numerically and experimentally demonstrate two metasurfaces in the microwave range: a four-channel SW meta-deflector and a four-channel SW metadevice that simultaneously produces a focused SW beam, a SW Bessel beam, and two deflected SW beams in different directions. Therefore, chirality-assisted geometric-phase metasurfaces provide a versatile platform for multi-channel SW wavefront engineering, offering significant potential for high-capacity on-chip communication and integrated photonic systems.

Exploiting hidden singularity on the surface of the Poincaré sphere

The classical Pancharatnam-Berry phase, a variant of the geometric phase, arises purely from the modulation of the polarization state of a light beam. Due to its dependence on polarization changes, it cannot be effectively utilized for wavefront shaping in systems that require maintaining a constant (co-polarized) polarization state. Here, we present a novel topologically protected phase modulation mechanism capable of achieving anti-symmetric full 2π phase shifts with near-unity efficiency for two orthogonal co-polarized channels. Compatible with -- but distinct from- - the dynamic phase, this approach exploits phase circulation around a hidden singularity on the surface of the Poincaré sphere. We validate this concept in the microwave regime through the implementation of multi-layer metasurfaces. This new phase modulation mechanism expands the design toolbox of flat optics for light modulation beyond conventional techniques.

RIS-Based On-the-Air Semantic Communications -- a Diffractional Deep Neural Network Approach

Semantic communication has gained significant attention recently due to its advantages in achieving higher transmission efficiency by focusing on semantic information instead of bit-level information. However, current AI-based semantic communication methods require digital hardware for implementation. With the rapid advancement on reconfigurable intelligence surfaces (RISs), a new approach called on-the-air diffractional deep neural networks (D$^2$NN) can be utilized to enable semantic communications on the wave domain. This paper proposes a new paradigm of RIS-based on-the-air semantic communications, where the computational process occurs inherently as wireless signals pass through RISs. We present the system model and discuss the data and control flows of this scheme, followed by a performance analysis using image transmission as an example. In comparison to traditional hardware-based approaches, RIS-based semantic communications offer appealing features, such as light-speed computation, low computational power requirements, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
