Estimating the black hole spin for the X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070

MAXI J1820+070 is a newly-discovered black hole X-ray binary, whose dynamical parameters, namely the black hole mass, the inclination angle and the source distance, have been estimated recently. \emph{Insight}-HXMT have observed its entire outburst from March 14th, 2018. In this work, we attempted to estimate the spin parameter~$a_*$, using the continuum-fitting method and applying a fully-relativistic thin disk model to the soft-state spectra obtained by \emph{Insight}-HXMT. It is well know that $a_*$ is strongly dependent on three dynamical parameters in this method, and we have examined two sets of parameters. Adopting our preferred parameters: $M$ = $8.48^{+0.79}_{-0.72}~M_\odot$, $i=63^\circ\pm3^\circ$ and $D=2.96\pm0.33$ kpc, we found a slowly-spinning black hole of $a_*=0.14 \pm 0.09$ ($1σ$), which give a prograde spin parameter as majority of other systems show. While it is also possible for the black hole to have a retrograde spin (less than 0) if different dynamical parameters are taken.

Constraints on neutrino millicharge and charge radius from neutrino-atom scattering

We consider possible effects of neutrino electric charge (millicharge) and charge radius on the neutrino-atom interaction processes such as (i) atomic ionization by neutrino impact and (ii) coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The bounds on the neutrino millicharge and charge radius that follow from, respectively, the GEMMA and COHERENT experiments are presented and discussed.

Constraining the stochastic gravitational wave from string cosmology with current and future high frequency detectors

Pre-Big-Bang models in string cosmology predict a relic background of gravitational wave radiation in the early universe. The spectrum of this background shows that the energy density rises rapidly with frequency, which is an interesting target for high-frequency (i.e., kilohertz) detectors. In this paper, we discussed the constraining power of multiple configurations of current and future gravitational wave detector (GWD) networks to the stochastic background predicted in string cosmology. The constraining power is jointly determined by the overlap reduction function and the sensitivity curves of multiple detectors. And we further elaborated on the possible contribution of a future Chinese detector and a kilohertz detector to the constraining power of detector network for stochastic background in string cosmology. Our results show that the detectability of the GWD network for the string cosmology gravitational wave background will improve considerably with the joining of a Chinese detector. This is because a Chinese detector (e.g. located at Wuhan ) together with KAGRA, has a better overlap reduction function than the laser interferometer gravitational wave observatory detector pair, and therefore lead to more stringent limits for stochastic background detection. And with ideal overlap reduction function, namely, colocated detectors, a kilohertz sensitivity curve has better performance than previous detectors for stochastic background detection. Finally, the results are compared with the limitations given by the observational constraint of the Big Bang nucleosynthesis bound.

Constraining cosmological parameters in FLRW metric with lensed GW+EM signals

We proposed a model-independent method to constrain the cosmological parameters using the Distance Sum Rule of the FLRW metric by combining the time delay distances and the comoving distances through a multi-messenger approach. The time delay distances are measured from lensed gravitational wave~(GW) signals together with their corresponding electromagnetic wave~(EM) counterpart, while the comoving distances are obtained from a parametrized fitting approach with independent supernova observations. With a series of simulations based on Einstein Telescope, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and The Dark Energy Survey, we find that only 10 lensed GW+EM systems can achieve the constraining power comparable to and even stronger than 300 lensed quasar systems due to more precise time delay from lensed GW signals. Specifically, the cosmological parameters can be constrained to ~$k=0.01_{-0.05}^{+0.05}$ and ~$H_0=69.7_{-0.35}^{+0.35}$ (1$σ$). Our results show that more precise time delay measurements could provide more stringent cosmological parameter values, and lensed GW+EM systems therefore can be applied as a powerful tool in the future precision cosmology.

Deep learning based automatic segmentation of lumbosacral nerves on non-contrast CT for radiographic evaluation: a pilot study

Background and objective: Combined evaluation of lumbosacral structures (e.g. nerves, bone) on multimodal radiographic images is routinely conducted prior to spinal surgery and interventional procedures. Generally, magnetic resonance imaging is conducted to differentiate nerves, while computed tomography (CT) is used to observe bony structures. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of automatically segmenting lumbosacral structures (e.g. nerves & bone) on non-contrast CT with deep learning. Methods: a total of 50 cases with spinal CT were manually labeled for lumbosacral nerves and bone with Slicer 4.8. The ratio of training: validation: testing is 32:8:10. A 3D-Unet is adopted to build the model SPINECT for automatically segmenting lumbosacral structures. Pixel accuracy, IoU, and Dice score are used to assess the segmentation performance of lumbosacral structures. Results: the testing results reveals successful segmentation of lumbosacral bone and nerve on CT. The average pixel accuracy is 0.940 for bone and 0.918 for nerve. The average IoU is 0.897 for bone and 0.827 for nerve. The dice score is 0.945 for bone and 0.905 for nerve. Conclusions: this pilot study indicated that automatic segmenting lumbosacral structures (nerves and bone) on non-contrast CT is feasible and may have utility for planning and navigating spinal interventions and surgery.

Superconductivity Induced by High Pressure in Weyl Semimetal TaP

Weyl semimetal defines a material with three dimensional Dirac cones which appear in pair due to the breaking of spatial inversion or time reversal symmetry. Superconductivity is the state of quantum condensation of paired electrons. Turning a Weyl semimetal into superconducting state is very important in having some unprecedented discoveries. In this work, by doing resistive measurements on a recently recognized Weyl semimetal TaP under pressure up to about 100 GPa, we observe superconductivity at about 70 GPa. The superconductivity retains when the pressure is released. The systematic evolutions of resistivity and magnetoresistance with pressure are well interpreted by the relative shift between the chemical potential and paired Weyl points. Calculations based on the density functional theory also illustrate the structure transition at about 70GPa, the phase at higher pressure may host superconductivity. Our discovery of superconductivity in TaP by pressure will stimulate further study on superconductivity in Weyl semimetals.

Pressure induced superconductivity in Bi single crystals

Measurements on resistivity and magnetic susceptibility have been carried out for Bi single crystals under pressures up to 10.5GPa. The temperature dependent resistivity shows a semimetallic behavior at ambient and low pressures (below about 1.6GPa). This is followed by an upturn of resistivity in low temperature region when the pressure is increased, which is explained as a semiconductor behavior. This feature gradually gets enhanced up to a pressure of about 2.52GPa. Then a non-monotonic temperature dependent resistivity appears upon further increasing pressure, which is accompanied by a strong suppression to the low temperature resistivity upturn. Simultaneously, a superconducting transition occurs at about 3.92K under a pressure of about 2.63GPa. With further increasing pressure, a second superconducting transition emerges at about 7K under about 2.8GPa. For these two superconducting states, the superconductivity induced magnetic screening volumes are quite large. As the pressure further increased to 8.1GPa, we observe the third superconducting transition at about 8.2K. The resistivity measurements under magnetic field allow us to determine the upper critical fields $μ_0 H_{c2}$ of the superconducting phases. The upper critical field for the phase with $T_c=3.92$K is extremely low. Based on the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) theory, the estimated value of $μ_0 H_{c2}$ for this phase is about 0.103T. While the upper critical field for the phase with $T_c$=7K is very high with a value of about 4.56T. Finally, we present a pressure dependent phase diagram of Bi single crystals. Our results reveal the interesting and rich physics in bismuth single crystals under high pressure.

Superconductivity with two-fold symmetry in topological superconductor SrxBi2Se3

Topological superconductivity is the quantum condensate of paired electrons with an odd parity of the pairing function. One of the candidates is the triplet pairing superconductor derived from topological insulator Bi2Se3 by chemical doping. Theoretically it was predicted that a two-fold superconducting order parameter may exist in this kind of bulk topological superconductor. Earlier experiments by nuclear magnetic resonance and angle-resolved magnetocaloric measurements seem to support this picture. By using a Corbino-shape like electrode configuration, we measure the c-axis resistivity without the influence of the vortex motion and find clear evidence of two-fold superconductivity in the recently discovered topological superconductor SrxBi2Se3. The Laue diffraction measurements on these samples show that the maximum gap direction is either parallel or perpendicular to the main crystallographic axis.

Multi-band superconductivity and large anisotropy in FeS crystals

By using a hydrothermal method, we have successfully grown crystals of the newly discovered superconductor FeS, which has an isostructure of the iron based superconductor FeSe. The superconductivity appears at about 4.5K, as revealed by both resistive and magnetization measurements. It is found that the upper critical field is relatively low, with however an rather large anisotropy $Γ=[(dH_{c2}^{ab}/dT)/(dH_{c2}^{c}/dT)]_{T_c}\approx5.8$. A huge magnetoresistivity (290$\%$ at 9T and 10K, ${H}$ $\parallel$ c-axis) together with a non-linear behavior of Hall resistivity vs. external field are observed. A two-band model is applied to fit the magnetoresistance and non-linear transverse resistivity, yielding the basic parameters of the electron and hole bands.

Nodal Superconducting Gap in $β$-FeS

Low temperature specific heat has been measured in superconductor $β$-FeS with T$_c$ = 4.55 K. It is found that the low temperature electronic specific heat C$_e$/T can be fitted to a linear relation in the low temperature region, but fails to be described by an exponential relation as expected by an s-wave gap. We try fittings to the data with different gap structures and find that a model with one or two nodal gaps can fit the data. Under a magnetic field, the field induced specific heat $Δγ$=[C$_e$(H)-C$_e$(0)]/T shows the Volovik relation $Δγ_e(H)\propto \sqrt{H}$, suggesting the presence of nodal gap(s) in this material.

Neutrino Physics with JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\barν$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest to understanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the building blocks of our Universe.

Anisotropic Superconducting Gap and Elongated Vortices with Caroli-De-Gennes-Matricon States in the New Superconductor Ta4Pd3Te16

The superconducting state is formed by the condensation of a large number of Cooper pairs. The normal state electronic properties can give significant influence on the superconducting state. For usual type-II superconductors, the vortices are cylinder like with a round cross-section. For many two dimensional superconductors, such as Cuprates, 2H-NbSe$_2$ etc., albeit the in-plane anisotropy, the vortices generally have a round shape. In this paper we report results based on the scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements on a newly discovered superconductor Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$. The chain like conducting channels of PdTe$_2$ in Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ make a significant anisotropy of the in-plane Fermi velocity. We suggest at least one anisotropic superconducting gap with gap minima or possible node exists in this multiband system. In addition, elongated vortices are observed with an anisotropy of $ξ_{\parallel b}/ξ_{\perp b}\approx 2.5$. Clear Caroli-de-Gennes-Matricon states are also observed within the vortex cores. Our results will initiate the study on the elongated vortices and superconducting mechanism in the new superconductor Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$.

Pressure Tuned Enhancement of Superconductivity and Change of Ground State Properties in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 Single Crystals

By using a hydrostatic pressure, we have successfully tuned the ground state and superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 single crystals. It is found that, with the increase of pressure, the original superconducting phase with Tc about 3.5 K can be tuned to a state with lower Tc, and then a new superconducting phase with Tc about 6.5 K emerges. Accompanied by this crossover, the ground state is switched from a semiconducting state to a metallic one. Accordingly, the normal state resistivity also shows a nonmonotonic change with the external pressure. Furthermore, by applying a magnetic field, the new superconducting state under pressure with Tc about 6.5 K is suppressed, and the normal state reveals a weak semiconducting feature again. These results illustrate a non-trivial relationship between the normal state property and superconductivity in this newly discovered superconducting system.
